furnapsIts just weird because the one tutorial I read the guy says this: Now you've compiled the drive, it needs to be moved over to the drivers directory. Select the version number appropriate for your kernel. I used version 3.7, and therefore directory 3.7. Despite running version 3.11.0-15-generic of the kernel.01:19

kostkoncyford, so you are being asked to reboot. most likely because you have installed a kernel update. after that?02:00
cyfordred ubuntu button  at the top right turns red about every week..  pc   brings down almost to a halt..   ..  i have an i7  12gb  mem,     i was working  on firefox,   bask scripting on terminal to my  centos server...  i can take screen shot if that would help  but need to reboot before i can show anyone\02:00
cyfordok02:01
cyford  i said this is happing every week02:01
rwwred ubuntu button = it's waiting for a reboot due to updates. security updates come out every so often. every week is not unusual.02:01
cyford i was asked to do that last week too02:01
rwwit would not cause "pc brings down almost to a halt" though, so if that is also happening then that's a separate issue02:01
DarwinSurvivorrww: if the video card driver is being updated, i've seen that cause performance issues on my systems (typically fixed by logging out/in)02:02

cyfordCeninant,03:21
DarwinSurvivorcyford: that script does a fair bit of package maintenance (including stuff like glibc which is particularly finicky). I'm am almost positive that's what caused your problem03:22
DarwinSurvivorcyford: when you replace glibc it can cause all sorts of library mismatches which would DEFINITELY affect performance (and stability)03:22

GenitrustESPECIALLY since last night i connected fine06:10
Genitrusteither way, i'm being adamant about this: the problem is DEBIAN damn it06:10
ryshXtremeasure: I think the steps shown in that support article will be done automatically by the installer when choosing the rescue option ... and the user get dropped in a chrooted environment06:10

ZyquilHi, I was wondering if it was possible to install Ubuntu 13.1 over an installation of Microsoft ME? Like totally overwrite it? The desktop's quite old. Like a decade old or so10:47
TJ-Monkey_b: OK, try using parted's "move" instead of "resize"10:47
Touhou11Zyquil: Yes, this would be trivial10:47
Monkey_bok, same command use move instead of resize?10:47
Monkey_bparted /dev/xvdf unit s move 1 2048s 125829119s10:48

TJ-Monkey_b: Yes, but I think it'll refuse since "move" wants to only use free-space10:48

Touhou11Zyquil: I do not understand your question10:49
Monkey_bTJ-: this implies data loss correct?10:49
Monkey_bok i know what i'll do10:49
Monkey_bcreate a brand new volune, attach it, copy everything over, nuke the old10:49

radioiaanegis it possible, using 2 separate audio devices, to simultaneously run  a Digital Audio Workstation (ex. linux multimedia studio) trough jack and the default system audio device  (ex.brower or music player) using pulse audio?10:50
TJ-Monkey_b: This is all tools trying too hard to protect you! You're only wanting to change a single 48-bit value!10:50
Touhou11Zyquil: Yes, it's possible to replace Windows ME with Ubuntu. Ubuntu asks you during the install process how you wish to format the disk, and whether you wish to entirely replace any existing Operating Systems10:51
hugaraxiaThe Ubuntu 13.10 liveCD is crashing for me when attempting to start the installer or live-mode. The last thing it mentions, every time, is nouveau. Is there any way to prevent nouveau from being loaded (or something similar?)10:51
TJ-Monkey_b: I'm thinking this might do it, something like "parted /dev/xvdf unit s rm 1 mkpart primary 2048s 125829119s"10:51
ZyquilI see, thanks. Only installed linux before as a dualboot option which is why I was asking.10:52
TJ-Monkey_b: No, hang on, we need something extra there10:52
Monkey_bTJ-: ok well i started restarting the VM with a new volume already lol10:52
Monkey_bwe can give it a shot when it comes back up10:52

organicanarchyjust wondering if a VM or a Wubi install is better11:19
organicanarchyTouhou11: any suggestions on Wubi or VM>?11:26
Touhou11organicanarchy: Wubi (I thought this no longer exists though). It can be difficult to get hardware acceleration for graphics through VMs, though VMWare has the best support for this imo11:27
organicanarchyTouhou11: Wubi still works for 12.04 LTS11:28
k1l_organicanarchy: dont use wubi11:29

organicanarchyi have a 40gig HD thats not plugged in on my machine, is there a way to install Ubuntu without installing grub?11:32
organicanarchyI had a dual boot at one point, and grub was on my system, it was a real hassle to get windows to work again after getting rid of Ubuntu11:32
Guest54988how can i backup installed software in ubuntu?11:33
k1l_organicanarchy: there is no hassle. just run the windows cd and let is "fix" the mbr and install the windows bootload again.11:34
k1l_organicanarchy: so not installing grub is way more hassle than running that windows cd after a ubuntu remove11:35
TJ-organicanarchy: The best way with 2 physical drives is to simply change the BIOS boot-device at start-up, then you don't have to have GRUB replace the Windows boot-loader on HDD1, since BIOS will boot from HDD2 for Linux and HDD1 for Windows.11:35
organicanarchyk1l_ thx for the info, im off to make a live USB11:35

TJ-organicanarchy: Install GRUB to the same device as you install Linux. You might have to check the advanced boot-loader settings in the installer, there is a Button that leads to the options for that11:37

itsthatguyHey. I've been searching for a solution for this off and on for weeks. I think I've hit my limit of "DIY"... when I use vnc to connect to my ubuntu machine, the local machine (which is attached to a monitor) does not show the actual mouse cursor. The remote shows it fine. I'm using vino-server. Does anyone have any ideas on this?19:05
itsthatguyI would love to be able to see the mouse cursor, I use the vnc for a trackpad on a touch-screen device, but don't project the screen.19:06
dw1craigbass1976: you can also import PDF to layers in GIMP, and use this .mng trick to get a multi-page PDF out of the deal. http://registry.gimp.org/node/2540019:06
dw1craigbass1976: but in my exp GIMP messes up the quality19:06
craigbass1976dw1, I'm hoping apt and flpsed works; I've done the GIMP route, but this is for a girl who would probably not do well with it.19:09

Wayward_VagabondSo, my graphics are currently messed up after a program crashed while starting and I've no idea how to fix them19:13
itsthatguytrism: I'm asking the opposite. my vnc client doesn't display the remote screen, it only provides and interface for a keyboard and mouse (on ipad). The ubuntu box is hooked up to a projector. I would like to control the ubuntu box from an ipad. the mouse cursor doesn't display on the projector screen, that is projecting the desktop of the actual ubuntu display.19:13

guntbertShutterstrom: whats your real question/problem?20:20
gabmusso, my story is that i started video editing for youtube using premiere pro on os x. eventually i moved away from it since i understood it is as bad as windows, then i switched to gnu/linux. still i cannot find anything decent. i even have windows installed in a separated hdd because of muh games, but i cant get to use it since... well, its a bad os. any suggestions for a good video editor?20:20
[Gentoo]Shutterstrom: no but what is wrong20:20
joh_878gabmus  didnt using wubbi20:20
stevejonesi have a laptop with an nvidia quadros K3100M gpu20:20
[Gentoo]i would just use rate limiting with firewall, or keys20:20
gabmusjoh_878: how are you trying to install it "inside windows" then?20:21
bekksjoh_878: you did. Trying to install inside Windows actually is "using wubi".20:21
stevejonesthe nouveau drivers work fine... but they dont support cuda or opengl20:21
[Gentoo]opengl they do20:21
EagleScreenjoh_878: installing Ubuntu inside Windows will NOT give you a full Ubuntu experience20:21
stevejonesi tried installing the nvidia binary drivers but that seems to have screwed up the xorg config20:21
brontosaurusrexgabmus, kdenline or lightworks maybe20:22
brontosaurusrexkdenlive*20:22
joh_878EagleScreen any idea how to do it using the third option?20:22
Jordan_Ugabmus: For something that can get proffessional results ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6MlUcmOul8 Tears of Steel among others), but with a somewhat high learning curve, try Blender.20:22
gabmusit would be nice to have a thing like "twitch plays pokemon" but instead "twitch intsalls gentoo". just a little ot :)20:22
gabmusbrontosaurusrex: i already tried both, plus blender, cinelerra, openshot... nothing good so far20:23
Forkzgabmus, there is Cinelerra as well20:23
brontosaurusrexgabmus, any specific features that you need?20:23
ForkzAh, tried that as well20:23
gabmusForkz: tried that as well20:23
EagleScreenjoh_878: just start your computer booting from your Ubuntu installation medium, not from the main hard disk20:23
gabmusbrontosaurusrex: a video editor that is fast and doesnt crash. basically this20:24
gabmusfast on an i5 and a gtx760 i mean20:24
Jordan_Ugabmus: Did you have speed or stability problems with Blender? If so, what issues specifically?20:24
brontosaurusrexgabmus, i gather that you crashed kdenlive and lightworks all the time?20:25
gabmusblender is not a problem really, just has a different use. i believe the  only thing where blender was used in tears of steel was the actual 3d animation, not the entire movie editing.20:25
Forkzgabmus, introduction for videoediting with Blender: http://processdiary.com/video-editing-in-blender-introduction/20:25
gabmusbrontosaurusrex: kdenlive, pitivi and openshot crash, while i cant get how to use cinelerra, and lightworks is overpriced20:25
ForkzBy a guy who sues Premiere for his day job20:26
brontosaurusrexgabmus, lightworks beta used to be free20:26
Jordan_Ugabmus: Wrong, the entire workflow was done with Blender. That was the reason for making a live action film, to polish those aspects of Blender.20:26
Shutterstrom[Gentoo]: guntbert: Well, my real question is conserning a public sftp server. is there anyway that users can access the server even with the security fixes I've done. guntbertShutterstrom: this is a channel for Ubuntu support - so as long as you are running an Ubuntu server its fine - about your question: it looks like overkill to me - if you disabled password login and have set a good™ passphrase for your key there is little to gain for any intruder20:30
Guest18788Even, if I run thunar in superuser mode, any ideas why?20:30
gabmusthats not how permissions work in unix-like systems. each user has its own private home20:31
Guest18788gabmus, How can I pass that?20:31
gabmusi think a solution could be to chroot the system in the partition, but i dont know how to do it20:31
Jordan_UGuest18788: Where are you trying to copy to?20:32
dw1why would superuser get access denied :/20:32
gabmusis your /home in a separate partition from /? if yes there could be a workaround20:32
yeats!chroot | gabmus Guest1878820:32
ubottugabmus Guest18788: A chroot is used to make programs believe that the directory they are running in is really the root directory. It can be used to stop programs accessing files outside of that directory, or for compiling 32bit applications in a 64bit environment - see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BasicChroot20:32
Guest18788gabmus, Yes20:32

rwwmajod: #ubuntu-gnome20:35
rwwguntbert: I expect that falls under "they are rare", along with xattrs20:35
gabmusGuest18788: you are transfering those files, but you wont get to read them. the owner is still the original user20:35

brontosaurusrexrudix, i can edit the remote file via filezilla and it will upload it when its saved localy20:46
gabmusphantomcircuit: i know that thing, may be caused by many things. i may have the solution: can you access a tty?20:47
rudixbrontosaurusrex,  it's something like "sync"  or20:47
Jordan_Urudix: Having a temporary file seems like a work around. You can just mount sftp shares via nautilus and work with files normally.20:47
brontosaurusrexrudix, just "edit" i think20:47
brontosaurusrexf5 or f4 or something20:47
rudixnautils does no do the trick either20:47
phantomcircuitgabmus, yeah i can20:48
rudixctrl+s ... 1sec lag (cannot edit) ... then ready to go20:48
awesomess3gabmus, I consider just pure console (CTRL+ALT+F2-6) to be a very fast alternate terminal. :-)20:48
phantomcircuitgabmus, e gdm login screen renders fine which is the weird part20:48
Jordan_Urudix: What problem do you have with nautilus' SFTP support?20:48
majodguys...did anyone anyhow solve issue with docky/cairo/plank fighting minimizing animation with unity?20:48
gabmusphantomcircuit: ok just wait for instructions20:48
rudixwinscp works that way ... is the "scp" protocol different than sftp20:48
brontosaurusrexrudix, yeah, also nautilus, another way would be sshfs20:49
Jordan_Urudix: So basically you don't want operations that normally sync/fsync to actually block on the file hitting the remote server. Correct?20:49
brontosaurusrexor just connecting to remote server and doing nano myfile.txt20:49
rudixJordan_U,  yes ...awesome explanation20:49
rudix(I am not native english speaker) :/20:49
gabmusphantomcircuit: login in a tty and run "sudo nano /etc/defaults/grub". find the line that says "GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"20:49
Jordan_Urudix: What do you want to happen if you lose the connection to the remote server between saving the file and it actually making it to the server?20:50
gabmusphantomcircuit: replace "quiet splash" with "nomodeset". press ctrl+o to save, then ctrl+x to exit. finally run "sudo update-grub && sudo init 6"20:51
phantomcircuitgabmus, yup20:51
Shutterstromguntbert: about fail2ban. The idea was/is to ban anyone that is just browsing for public servers to take over and thus preventing any DDOS attacks. Just a simple way of saying "if you're not a registered user, please go away" :)20:51
rudixJordan_U, collateral damage20:51
yeatsjoh_134: so you created a Windows partition for installing ubuntu? is that what you mean by 'my partition drive(L)'?20:51
Jordan_Urudix: So you don't mind losing some data in that case. Correct?20:51
rudixyes20:51
rudixthe lage is more annoying20:51
gabmusphantomcircuit: the pc should reboot with the last command, see if it works20:51
rudixI hit ctrl+s a lot20:51
rudixalso care about backups20:52
joh_134yeats yes20:52
Jordan_Urudix: Well, you could use libeatmydata, but I'm sure there's a nicer solution than that.20:52
yeatsjoh_134: then you're going about this the wrong way - you need to create free space on the disk for Ubuntu to use20:52
yeatsjoh_134: if you're on Vista or 7 (or I assume 8, but don't know) you can "shrink" your Windows partition to do that20:53
rudixthanks Jordan_U20:53
joh_134yeats done all that already20:54
gabmusquestion: how do i change the boot priority in my grub menu?20:54

SteveH0With a small (<15) network, what is the easiest way to resolve hostnames?21:26
Jordan_Ujoh_134: You have a problem. A drive with an msdos partition table, and such a partition table can only have 4 primary partitions. You already have 4 primary partitions, so unless you change one of them to an extended partition (with logical partitions inside it) you can't crate any more partitions.21:28
joh_134Jordan_U how can i do that place21:29
joh_134Jordan_U how can i do that please21:31
Jordan_Ujoh_134: There are consequences to moving a partition from primary to logical-within-extended, especially for Windows installations. Without knowing more about your Windows installation I can't even tell you if it's safe (which is why Ubuntu's installer didn't offer to partition automatically). Unfortunately I don't have the time to walk you through figuring out that information at the moment. Sorry.21:31

joh_134Jordan_U one more thing. Is that a windows thing or ubuntu?21:34
Jordan_Ujoh_134: Is what a Windows thing?21:35
joh_134Jordan_U moving a partition from primary to logical-within-extended?21:35
SteveH0Jordan: You could make a backup of the last (physical) partition's files and then delete that partition and then remaking it a logical partition, and then creating at least two extended partions, one to restore what you backed up, and another one to make into a Linux partition.  I'd also make a small third one for the swap drive.21:36
Jordan_Ujoh_134: It's something that you can do either in Windows or Ubuntu.21:37
Jordan_USteveH0: You can convert to logical without ever deleting the partition's data, but if it's a recovery partition for example it may need to be primary to function (since Windows isn't as flexible as GNU/Linux in this area).21:38
