BlitzOColourhi channel, I just fixed my fiancees computer so she could record her jazz music. well okay, I fixed it so that she would stop using my computer all the time. anyway, she is absolutely terrible with computers. when first I saw her computer, it was full of spyware, malware, adbots, trackers, and loaded with shit programs half of which were installers for fucked up trojans and shit. so in other words, she is really, really, 02:54
holstein!language > BlitzOColour02:54
ubottuBlitzOColour, please see my private message02:54
holsteinBlitzOColour: welcome to the channel.. let us konw if you have any questions02:54
BlitzOColourokay. sure. after fixing it all up, it still hangs randomly. Windows 7, huh?02:55
BlitzOColourI was thinking about setting her up with an ubuntu studio install02:55
BlitzOColourhow stupid an idea is this? Considering her... technological shortcomings?02:55
holsteindepends on many thing02:55
BlitzOColourOr, alternateively, I will be pleased to find out that ubuntustudio is designed with musicians in mind, and it will be great and I won't be 24/7 tech support anymore?02:55
holsteinthings*02:56
holsteini say, you dont need ubuntustudio.. or she doesnt02:56
BlitzOColourwhy do you say this?02:56
holsteini would say, a simpler xubuntu or lubuntu setup with audacity would likely be plenty02:56
holsteinyou can get, in windows 7, audacity, and firefox or chrome, and libreoffice going.. (as well as other "crossover" applications"02:57
BlitzOColourlast time I used audacity, it was a somewhat terrible programme that came nowhere near close to the pro-tools and such of its time02:57
holsteinget her using those them move to linux02:57
holsteinBlitzOColour: its not to address the workflow of protools02:57
holsteinBlitzOColour: a person on the technical level you mention above shouldnt be using protools02:57
holsteinBlitzOColour: if she is, then, we can have a different conversation02:58
BlitzOColourno, she's using presonus' studioOne202:58
BlitzOColouror maybe reaper02:58
BlitzOColourbut she is not using them well, yet.02:58
holsteinBlitzOColour: protools is a full featured DAW (digital audio workstation).. we have many of those in linux.. but,  they are, as is protools, not trivial02:58
BlitzOColourstill, isn't audacity for hobbyists and amateurs? She is a professional, working musician02:58
holsteinaudacity is a simple recorder.. which does that02:59
holsteinyou hit a button, and record02:59
holsteinwe have many apps like thatas well.. but, you dont need ubuntustudio for them02:59
holsteinBlitzOColour: im a proffessional working musician02:59
holsteinBlitzOColour: recording my music rarely comes up02:59
holsteinBlitzOColour: and, if it did, i could use audacity to record my music..03:00
BlitzOColourso what is the advantage of using ubuntustudio over xubuntu? For people who want to code and write drivers?03:00
holsteinBlitzOColour: the advantage is, all of the software is included03:00
holsteinBlitzOColour: the drivers are not as they are in windows03:00
cfhowlettBlitzOColour, ubuntustudio = ubuntu + xfce + media creation packages03:00
holsteinBlitzOColour: the linux kernel is modular, and the drivers are included03:00
holsteinBlitzOColour: lots of folks using repear were just excited about this release03:02
holsteinhttps://www.bitwig.com/en/home/recent-news.html03:02
holsteinthey have a linux version now03:02
holsteinif you wanted, you would be able to purchase that and run in on linux/xubuntu/ubuntustudio03:02
holsteinthough, we have many tools that are professional grade03:03
holsteinand "maintaining the operating system" is different than it is in windows03:03
holsteinyou reallly just need to keep up to date with upgrades, and you dont have the same attacks as a windows machine would, at a default level03:04
BlitzOColourafter a year of buying nord electros, looping pedals, software distros, and other crap that musicians claim they need, I am not going to pay any more than $60.00 for software03:04
holsteinBlitzOColour: and, as im saying, you dont 'Need' to..03:05
holsteinBlitzOColour: im just offering scenarios that fit what you have asked for03:05
holsteinBlitzOColour: can a musician use these tools in ubuntustudio to create professional audio? sure.. i do03:05
holsteinBlitzOColour: but, thats not the question03:05
BlitzOColourYes. I'll try and repair the windows install and if I fail, consider an ubuntustudiop install. thanks for letting me know what it can do03:05
holsteinBlitzOColour: we have a live CD that can be used to test everything03:05
holsteinBlitzOColour: yo udont have to install the OS to try it03:05
holsteinhttp://holsteinmusic.com/ for example is my projects i do as a professinall musician, in my own studio, with these tools03:06
holsteinyou can always dual boot both windows and linux as well03:07
BlitzOColourcool. thanks for the examples and info03:08
holsteincfhowlett: folks seem surprised when you dont give them the answer they want to hear, i suppose03:08
cfhowlettholstein, it's IRC; just saying "hello" is highly offensive to someone03:09
holstein"just download it, and rainbows and puppy dogs will automatically record her music".. is probably more what he hoped for03:09
holsteincfhowlett: lol.. true03:09
cfhowlettholstein, puppy dogs, automastering and marketing : FREE!03:09
holstein:)03:10

jrryneed so help with jackd04:07
holsteinsure.. ask for help with anything04:07
jrryI am run studio and lrxicon alpha get d:buss error04:08
holsteinthe lexicon omega is plug and play for me04:08
holsteini use qjackctl, and select the device from the drop down, and run jack04:09
jrrywill work on second laptop04:09
holsteinjrry: ok. so, you either have the configuration wrong, or you got bad or unsupported USB hardware.. or irq issues that are quite severe04:10
jrryit will work with internal audio but not with lexicon04:10
holsteini would fire up a live CD on the problematic hardware, and see if i could get it working04:10
holsteinjrry: sure, and that supports the "bad usb", or unsupported usb hardware theory04:11
holsteinthe internal is not usb.. so, JACK is working with it04:11
holsteinjrry: you can try disableing the dbus04:11
holsteinjrry: its under the "misc" tab in qjackctl04:11
