Guest000000Hello, I have a question. Can I install Ubuntu Linux on a C720 Chromebook with only 16GB of space? Because all of the guides I read talk about the 32GB version...00:03
daftykinsGuest000000: i've seen guides that install some version of ubuntu on 16GB ones, but they of course tend to be very limited. if you have a memory card slot on your model, perhaps one of the guides refers to whether you can install to a card in there instead?00:04
daftykinsGuest000000: the main issue being whether the developer mode BIOS can boot from such cards, or not00:04
Guest000000Can you point me to one of those guides?00:05
daftykinsGuest000000: i'd only be googling myself, so not much benefit to me doing it00:05
Guest000000I guess I'll have to replace the SSD in my chromebook if I want a full version of Ubuntu.00:06
Guest000000I don't want a limited version.00:07
dw1Guest000000: I run http://lubuntu.net on a netbook with 16GB.  You might have enough power for the big-boy Ubuntu tho00:07
daftykinsGuest000000: well you're limited by space is all, you can fit in a small install, you just won't be able to store much on it00:07
Guest000000Thanks.00:08
daftykinsyou can probably use flash drives or the aforementioned memory cards to reduce that issue00:08

TheblueladAny idea about fixing a system hang after resuming from suspend?10:20
WalexThebluelad: become a kernel developer, fix the bug.10:20

dw1Thebluelad: i wouldnt really know where to start.. so would try http://google.com/search?q=ubuntu+system+hang+after+resume+suspend10:22

DJonesWalex: Please be helpful, telling somebody to become a kernel developer to fix is bug isn't much use10:24
dw1Thebluelad: it could be a lot of things...10:24
WalexDJones: I also suggested paying a developer to fix the bug. There is a bug, it has to be fixed, and there are only two possibilities: fix it yourself, pay someone to fix it.10:25
TheblueladFrom what I can gather, it seems like an issue with nvidia drivers10:25

TheblueladLots and lots of google10:26

TheblueladWell I'm not sure if you guys are willing to have a look but I've done a lot of searching and come up virtually empty handed10:37
TheblueladPeople seem to be solving the problem, but despite several attempts to follow their methods, I can't seem to10:38
TheblueladIt's just this one problem though. When I was on mint, I couldn't even change brightness, let alone suspend/hibernate. Now I can change the brightness but I still can't suspend/hibernate10:39
TheblueladIf I could get that working, it'd all be working perfectly smoothly10:40
k1l_Thebluelad: i found 2 solutions: 1. set it to intel (the integrated video card) only and run with the xserver-xorg-video-intel driver. that is reported as working, but then you only run with the smaller video card10:40

Guest168hey, how would I go about cleaning up my home folder of files/folders that are not needed without manually getting rid of something that might cause problems?15:13
cfhowletth3r01ne did you format the hdd before you installed?15:13
h3r01nei formatted it during the installation15:14
h3r01ne cfhowlett did it during istallation15:14
cfhowletth3r01ne including your  /home partition?15:16
h3r01ne cfhowlett: no. should i? do you mean during the intallation-disk or before the installation with other means?15:17
h3r01ne cfhowlett: how should i format the drive?15:18
jhutchinsGuest168: find out what is in a folder and why it's there.  If you don't know, keep looking and don't delete it.15:18
cfhowletth3r01ne there it is.  your /home holds your user configurations.  assuming the previous configs were funky, they are STILL funky.15:18
cfhowletth3r01ne reinstall.  when you get to the partition sectioning of installation, format the partitions.15:19
h3r01ne cfhowlett: alright... thx will do that15:20
jhutchinsh3r01ne: That situation is often caused if you run a GUI application as root and it changes the ownership/permissions of folders in your $HOME.15:20
jhutchinsh3r01ne: You could also try creating a new user and logging in as that user.  You could use rescue mode or simply switch to a terminal.  You can probably log in as your regular user from the console.15:20
jhutchinsReinstalling the whole OS, like rebooting, is more of a Windows solution.15:21

KottizenHi everyone. This is the case: On Thursday next week, everyone in my year is going to take the same national test. The test is in Swedish (I'm Swedish), and we're supposed to write an essay. The headmaster said that no computers could be used, because they had no realistic way of stopping cheaters. If I could present a functional solution though, he would happily consider using it, allowing us to write on our laptops.16:35
KottizenThe easiest and most secure way seems to be to run a live CD, with a customized system that lacks network drivers and pretty much all software except Libreoffice Writer. The automatically signed in user should not be able to gain root access. Does such live system exist, so I can just burn it, or would I have to create and customize my own live system?16:35

ckindleyHi all. Mad success on the PXE booting front; I just had to muddle my way through NFS config to make sure NFSv3 was supported. Still no easy workaround for Ubuntu NFSv4 root at the moment, per my research.16:47
reisioKottizen: I suggest starting with sysresccd16:47
reisioKottizen: http://www.sysresccd.org/Sysresccd-manual-en_How_to_personalize_SystemRescueCd16:48
ckindleyMy current problem is that, since /etc/network/interfaces contains "iface eth0 inet maual" and its address is received from the DHCP server pre-boot, the booted system has no nameserver in resolv.conf16:48
reisioKottizen: a better long term approach might be to turn all the laptops into terminals that use remote filesystem data always, so you don't have to boot a live os16:49
ckindleySo, no name resolution, and thus no LDAP accounts, and thus no access to my lab computers :(16:49

CapprenticeQuestion: How to diagnose "segmentation fault" ?16:54

reisiounstable: likely you can copy the entire filesystem wholesale over19:50
rwwreisio: because 12.04 to 14.04 is a supported direct upgrade, and upgrading 12.04 -> 12.10 -> 13.04 -> 13.10 -> 14.04 is a pain in the backside19:50
