krissiHello, I just installed kubuntu 14.04 and i can't find my mic00:53
valoriehi krissi - 14.04 help in #ubuntu+102:08
ironhoofHey, just a quickie I hope, but a friend of mine wants a good e-mail pop notifier, in the kubuntu install I gave him. You have any recommendations?02:54
kde_newhi how do i make krunner search my pdf docs. Gnome shell shows the docs when i press the super key and search but kde does not show it. My Docs are placed in the Documents directory in home but i still dont see it getting properly searched. Any settings to enable for better search and any tags to be added in Dolphin for this ?05:39
kde_newi am using Kubuntu 13.10 KDE 4.12.305:40
Caucasare you sure krunner is able to do that?05:42
kde_newCaucas: how do you search docs. i see only few getting searched. I understand the search daemon which starts with Alphabet N does that but how do you trigger it. I believe its only through krunner right ?05:43
kde_newCaucas: i mean i want something like what i see in gnome-shell. I press Super button and i search for some pdf and i type the name and it shows it and i press enter thats it. Can i do something like this in KDE ?05:44
CaucasI think the krunner scope is limited. He doesn't have access to file system, so you can install KSearch and enjoy ;)05:48
kde_newCaucas: so by default you cannot do this in KDE. you need an other application to be installed is it ? :o05:50
Caucasyou can aslo use console ;)05:51
CaucasOr Dolphin finder05:52
kde_newoh ok i was under the impression that i can do this from krunner like how gnome shell does straight05:53
Graf_Westerholtkde_new, you can enable Nepomuk-Search-Plugin in Krunner. ;)05:58

kde_newGraf_Westerholt: how do i do that ?06:13
Graf_Westerholtkde_new, do you not have a „settings“-button in krunner?06:13
kde_newoh ok so by default is disabled and we have to manually enable it. On enabling it i can search all my docs from krunner. Is that right .06:14
Graf_WesterholtI guess.06:15
Graf_WesterholtWhy do you not just try it?06:15

kubuntu_betaHello :)08:09
kubuntu_beta Can Kubuntu be installed within windows?08:09
kubuntu_beta/j  ubuntu+108:17
goose00014000If you needed a particular command in Linux while using the console, but you didn't know what the command was and didn't have internet access, is there a particular command you can use to search for it? Consider both of these scenarios: 1) You have a vaque memory of what the command is or you remember what the first couple of letters of the command are; 2) You don't remember the command at all and08:38

alucardromeroHi everybody, question here: Acer Aspire 772G here, UEFI disabled (SecureBoot as well), boots to GUI just fine (as you can see I'm typing in Quassel, however while installing, Windows partition isn't accounted for in partitioner.  But in File Manager, I see the partition.  Any clues on how to get Win7 partition seen?08:55
alucardromeroI have read a lot of the documentation on ubuntuforums.org08:56

lordievaderGood morning.10:02
soa2iiHi. I just tried the 14.04 beta and if you choose german during install you still end up on a half translated KDE session after installation … is this a known bug or expected behaviour?10:44
lordievadersoa2ii: Trusty support is in #ubuntu+1 until Trusty is released.11:17

naftilos76Hi i am trying to use some kind of dvd ripping app in kubuntu but the output files in dvdrip and acidrip are a few kbytes and that's it. Could it be a missing installed package related to the codecs?13:36

Mamarokwhat alternative is there to parted? Apparently I ran into a double free error and all frontends I know use libparted as well (partitionmanager and kvpm)15:07
ikoniaMamarok: that's worrying15:12
ikoniaparteds pretty much become the standard for most15:12
Mamarokyes, so having a double free error is really not good15:13
Mamarokthere is fdisk maybe? Haven't used that in ages15:13
MamarokI tried partitionmanagaer, then kvpm, then parted directly, all produce the same error15:14
Mamarokso libparded is to blame :(15:14
lordievaderMamarok: Fdisk doesn't support gpt, so it is an alternative for mbr based disks.15:14
Mamarokapparently a similar error was already reported in 2009, and there was a gcc4 patch: bug 37159515:16
ubottubug 371595 in parted (Ubuntu) "parted crashes with "double free or corruption" message" [Undecided,Expired] https://launchpad.net/bugs/37159515:16
Mamarokwith a much older version of parted though, current is 2.315:16
Mamarokbut that bug above is related to long path names, I have a simple /dev/sdb15:17
MamarokI just wonder why we use such an old version, current is 3.1, released in 201215:25
Mamarokand apparently that was solved in 3.1: from the changelog of 3.1:15:26
Mamaroklibparted: avoid an invalid free when creating many partitions in15:26
Mamarok  a GPT partition table.  [bug introduced in parted-1.9.0]15:26
* Mamarok goes to fetch version 3.115:27
lordievaderMamarok: That might be the sync from Debian, stable offers 2.3-12.15:27
OerHeksgdisk supports gpt too15:27
lordievader!info parted trusty15:27
ubottuparted (source: parted): disk partition manipulator. In component main, is standard. Version 2.3-18 (trusty), package size 43 kB, installed size 182 kB15:27
OerHeks!info gdisk15:27
ubottugdisk (source: gdisk): GPT fdisk text-mode partitioning tool. In component main, is extra. Version 0.8.7-1 (saucy), package size 337 kB, installed size 770 kB15:27
Mamarokwhy do we use such an old parted library?15:28
MamarokI know why: "Parted (post-2.4) no longer has the ability to create and modify file systems"15:29
ikoniaMamarok: this just seems silly15:30
Mamaroktotally15:30
Mamaroklike going back to the stone age15:30
ikoniait seems more silly as libparted is becoming 'the' standard15:30
Mamarokthen maybe we have to rethink the standard, seriously15:31
lordievaderDoesn't parted give you a warning when you use it to make filesystems?15:31
ikoniaMamarok: or maybe actually keep up to date with bug fixes (especially critical ones) on the standard15:32
Mamarokyeah, but hey, a simple parted -l on /dev/sdb causes the crash, I never even come mear to create a partition or a file system15:35
Mamaroknear*15:35
lordievaderOeh, that's nasty.15:36
ctabuyohello15:37
ctabuyoI´m windows user and I wanna change to Linux but I don´t like ubuntu´s visual aspect. So I´m wondering if in kubuntu you can download the same programms that in ubuntu?15:38
ctabuyoplease help me15:39
lordievaderctabuyo: Jup, it even uses the same core ;)15:39
ctabuyoThank you lordievader I´m gonna install kubuntu in my pc :)15:40
lordievader\o/15:40
OerHeksctabuyo, kubuntu might have better versions of programs, K3B <> brasero and more15:42
ctabuyoI never changed to Linux because I like to play games with my pc but today I read about wine. Someone here uses Wine for games? Does it ralentize the frame rate?15:44
lordievaderctabuyo: Somethings work well in Wine, others not so much. [1] is a quite usefull resource for Wine. [1] http://appdb.winehq.org/15:46
ctabuyoThank you very much lordievader, I hope I´ll be too much happy in Linux than in Windows(It´s an horrible SO)...15:47

Guest55489hi Im experience weird behavior with Muon discover. when I search for something, many packages do not show up. However if search in the package manager they do22:19
Guest55489all the ppas seem to be configured correctly. Is this normal?\22:20
valorieGuest55489: if you search specifically for one of the missing packages, does it show up?22:26
valorieronnoc: work in progress22:26
valorieand in fact, the kubuntuforums people will be able to set up their own bodega if they want22:26
valoriethe few sales could support the forum22:26
valorieor they could offer memberships22:27
Guest55489no it doesn't22:30
valoriehmmm22:31
valoriediscover is set up to offer applications, not packages22:31
valorieso I would say if something is part of an app, rather than an app, then you won't find it22:32
valoriebut if it is missing applications, then please file on/find and comment on a bug22:32
Guest55489ok this makes sense, how does it decide the difference between packages and apps22:33
valorieI'm not sure22:34
valorieperhaps by dependencies22:34
valorieapplications have them22:34
valoriebut are in general not dependencies of anything beyond the meta-packages such as kubuntu-desktop22:35
Guest55489alright thanks that explains alot22:36
valorietbh, I don't like software centers, so I use muon package manager or the cli22:39
valorieapt-cache search is pretty neato22:39

ronnocso determining what's an app vs. a wallpaper vs. a plasmoid is pretty simple23:33
valorieyes, I can hardly wait for us to be able to use it23:34
valoriekde-look and kde-apps is filled with junk and spam23:35
valorienot a nice face for kde to the world23:35
