posthumanhey guys i installed xenmanager on ubuntu 12.04  but im running into some  error while syncronising. It says ResponseNotReady  Done .... using  xen-server 6.216:42
Stuhey all17:08
Stubeen trying to decide as a noob to linux what distro...kubuntu looks it might make the transition from windows to linux...can i get some thoughts on this17:08
Stuwhoops make it easier17:09
Stulol17:09
ikoniaStu: what information do you actually want ?17:12
Stusince i am switching from windows to linux...would you recommend this a good distro for a noob such as myself17:12
DarthFrogStu:  Yes, for the most part.  You will have learn some new things, as it is different from Windows.  if you can cope with that, welcome to the Light Side of The Force. :-)17:14
Stusweet.  i mean is there any command line stuff i need to know17:14
ikoniaStu: we had this conversation in #ubuntu17:15
ikoniaStu: it's a personal preference, try using it live and see if you like it17:15
ikoniaif you don't like it, try another to get the feel17:15
Stuim so confused17:15
Stulol17:15
ikonianot sure what's confusing about this17:15
Stui dont know what the hell im doing17:15
ikoniasome people like a distro - others don't17:15
DarthFrogStu:  Need to know?  No.  Would like complete control over your machine, yes.17:15
ikoniatry using the distro live as I told you in #ubuntu, see if YOU like it17:15
Stuokay sorry about the double posting in the chat17:16
ikoniaStu: you'll get a lot better information if when you ask for advice, you follow the advice, rather than changing channel and asking it again17:16
Stuur right...sorry for my ignorance17:17
Stugood thing i got a stack of dvd's to burn this bad boy and ubuntu too17:17
ikoniano need to apologise, I don't personally care17:17
ikoniayou can do what you want in terms of use/not use a distro17:17
DarthFrogStu:  Ubuntu is probably more newbie-friendly.  Kubuntu is more power user-friendly. :-)  But it's for newbs, too.17:18
ikoniathat's just nonsense17:18
ikoniakubuntu is not "power user"17:18
ikoniait's just as welcoming to new users as any other desktop17:18
DarthFrogikonia:  I said _more_ power-user friendly17:18
ikoniaand I said "nonsense"17:18
ikoniait's not "more poweruser" friendly at all17:18
ikoniait's just a desktop the same as any other17:19
DarthFrogThen we shall agree to disagree.17:19
ikoniain what way is it more power user friendly then ?17:19
DarthFrogI'm _not_ saying it's not for newcomers, not at all.17:19
ikoniathen why did you just say it's more power user friendly17:19
DarthFrogIt doesn't have Unity getting int the way.17:19
ikoniano, it has kde gettting in the way17:19
ikoniaso please try to at least be realistic17:19
ikoniaif you don't like unity - fine17:19
ikoniabut to say kde is more power user friendly because you don't like unity is just bad17:20
DarthFrogOK, please drop the topic.17:20
DarthFrogI don't really care.17:20
Stugood lord....17:20
ikoniathen please do'nt make stuff up advise people17:20
DarthFrogYou're an op and I'm not.17:20
ikoniabeing an op has nothing to do with it17:20
Stuop?17:20
ikoniaoperator of the channel17:20
Stukde?  unity?17:20
ikoniadon't worry about it17:20
Stulol17:20
Stuugh17:20
DarthFrogHey, it's my _opinion_.  You don't like it. fine.17:20
ikoniaDarthFrog: you're welcoem to your opinion but you don't seem to be able to back it up at all17:21
DarthFrogStu:  This is a tempest in a teapot.  Ignore what ikonia and I are blathering about.17:21
ikoniaother than "its not unity"17:21
DarthFrogNo, you're challenging my opinion and I simply don't care.17:21
ikoniaDarthFrog: then expalin it a little17:22
ikoniaI'm interested17:22
DarthFrogI've always found KDE to be much more capable than GNOME.17:22
ikoniahow is kde more friendly to power users17:22
DarthFrogKDE: How can I help you to do what you want to do?  GNOME: I'm sorry Dave, I can't let you do that.17:22
ikoniasuch as ?17:23
DarthFrogEase of configuration, for a start.17:23
ikoniasuch as ?17:23
DarthFrogStu:  Kubuntu is KDE based, Ubuntu is Unity/GNOME based.  These are desktop environments.  Which one you use is totally a matter of personal perference.17:24
Stuand thats where im confused.  im gonna throw it on a vbox and go from there17:25
DarthFrogStu:  Either environment can run the apps from each environment.17:26
Stui gotcha....i like the kubuntu it kinda looks like mac sorta kinda17:27
DarthFrogActually, I would have said that Unity on Ubuntu is trying to be more like Mac OS.17:27
BluesKajyup, KDE is more familiar looking to windows users17:30
DarthFrogHi BluesKaj17:31
BluesKajhey DarthFrog17:31
Stui cant even run this on a virtual machine on windows...tells me that i dont have the correct processor trype17:33
StuWTJ17:33
StuWTH17:33
DarthFrogStu:  You can boot from the CD (either version) and run a LiveCD version.17:34
Stuyeah was gonna try virtual machine first i didnt want to reboot...was downloading something17:35
BluesKajDarthFrog, you might be interested in this ppa , it stopped the blanking and fonts probs with OpenGL and raster and it might solve your steam/kwin crashes17:38

pietro10Hi. I played around with some desktop environment sessions, and one of them changed lightdm to use a differnet theme that I can't switch back with KDE - specifically an Ubuntu-like theme with a list of users on the left, that had a purple background at first but changed to an XFCE one after I tried that. How do I change ti back? I tried removing /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf (which wasn't there before) but that didn't work. Thanks.21:04
Snowhog_pietro10: Do you want to return to using KDM or stick with LightDM?21:10
pietro10Snowhog_: oh, I wasn't using lightdm before?21:12
pietro10becuase the KDE system settings theme chooser says lightdm on it, and shows the correc tthemes21:12
pietro10and I don't have kdm installed21:13
pietro10I'm saying KDE is showing one theme, but lightdm is using another21:13
Snowhog_pietro10: Open a console and type: sudo install --reinstall lightdm21:13
Snowhog_pietro10: This will ensure that all parts of lightdm are installed.21:14
Snowhog_pietro10: Sorry!  correction:  sudo apt-get install --reinstall lightdm21:14
pietro10oh I think I know what happened21:17
pietro10it's unity-greeter21:17
pietro10but I can't find out without removing unity..??21:18
Stu_hey Darth21:19
pietro10trying it; thanks in the meantime Snowhog_21:19
Stu_i tried the both of them meaning ubuntu and kubuntu....i like kubuntu better believe it or not21:19
Stu_umm okay then21:31
=== calin is now known as crucerucalin
pietro10Okay. What's the correct way to change the LightDM greeter used? Thanks.22:59
pietro10after trying several desktop environments, GTK+ no longer uses the KDE-dictated icon set. How do I change it back? Thanks.23:05
pietro10*also,23:05
KristyHello, how do I alter my secondary monitor's display color? It's too yellow and probably needs less R and G. Any help is appreciated!23:05
pietro10ok screw this I'm going to finish making sure quit events work right on unity and then remove it because it's caused everything so far23:07
KristyNever mind, I found out how to unlock my monitor's menu.23:32
