[03:27] How do you delete a group of files? [03:27] I can highlight them easily, but thereś no delete option [03:30] press the delete key (or shift-delete to really delete), or right-click on one of the selected files [03:31] ok [03:32] it worked, thanks [03:33] no problem [03:37] How do you copy a group of files all highlighted together? [03:37] I can hightlight them all easily, but again, there is no copy option I can see [03:37] you can do it from the right-click menu, or simply with Ctrl+C [03:37] ok, I will try it [03:38] you can also just click and drag to another folder and it'll ask what you want to do [03:39] or also in another window [03:39] there's a split button at the top which lets you have two pains open at once [04:12] My apostrophe never works anywhere, and I tried resetting my keyboard to us [04:12] But it did not work [04:13] they said itś because I have an external IME running...whatever that means [04:13] they said I need to compile apostrophe support into my kernel or something [04:14] I don¨t know how to do that....seems like too much trouble just for an apostrophe === krz is now known as Guest20670 === calin is now known as crucerucalin [09:02] Good morning. [18:24] so when i create a hardlink on 2 files that botth do exist one gets deleted [18:24] I don't know what you mean by "a hardlink on 2 files". You have 2 links to one file in a hard link. [18:24] a symbolic link is just a special kind of file which contains the path to the linked to file, a hard link on the other hand is one that simply refers to the same underlying reference in the file system [18:24] my music for instance is littered with exact replicas [18:25] If you delete one of the links, you only delete that inode. The other is untouched. [18:25] deleting a hard link just removes one of the references, only when all references are removed is the actual file marked as deleted [18:25] dutchuss2016: Copies of files are not hard links. [18:25] i wanna condence my 400 gbs of music know that [18:26] dutchuss2016: Removing hard links will not free up any disk space. Only inodes. [18:26] i know that but what im saying is if i run a program like duemerger that hardlinks 2 exact files what haappens to the seecond file [18:27] Please lose the idea that hard links mean copies of files. It's one and the same file. [18:27] There is no second file. [18:27] It's the same file with a different name/location. [18:28] So if you delete the second link, nothing happens to the file. [18:28] If you delete the last link to the file, the file is deleted. [18:29] Filesystems often contain identical copies of files. Unix filesystems can reduce storage space required by such redundancy by replacing these identical copies with hard-links to a single file. [18:29] Here are four scripts which all do more or less the same thing: scan a filesystem for identical files and replace them with hardlinks to the same file. explain this [18:29] That makes sense. [18:30] What it's saying is that if it finds dupes, it replaces a dupe with a hard link, thus deleting the dupe on disk and retaining only one copy. [18:31] thats what i was trying to find out thank you so what i was saying is the identical file gets deleted i win [18:31] does that make sense to you? [18:31] Yeah, you win. :-) It's a win-win. [18:32] So you will free up disk space. [18:32] is there somethign for linux that will just delete the duplicate file without hardlinking (i only plan on running it for my media library of 400 gigs of music [18:32] DarthFrog, what happens when you upgrade that package/file? [18:33] OerHeks: the file on disk will be changed to the upgraded version and all hard links to that file will see the upgraded version. [18:34] dutchuss2016: I would imagine that here are lots of dupe deleters but I don't have any knowledge/experience with them. [18:34] and once i finish running a program to delete dupes i need to drefrag my hard drive NTFS === max is now known as Guest23048 [18:34] Do that in Windows. [18:35] impossable to do in windows no longer have windows [18:35] not removing the hard drive drom the comuter to put in a windows based machine [18:35] then why NTFS?? [18:36] secondary drive main drive not big enough to move the music [18:36] dont really wanna redownlooad 400 gigs of music [18:37] Urk, no. Don't do that. [18:37] Copy it to a backup drive instead. [18:37] thats why i need to find a dupe deleterr [18:37] dont have an external big enough [18:37] sounds important music to me, you really should make a backup [18:37] Drives are cheap. So is a home NAS device. [18:37] wanna clean up my library with as little hassle as ossable [18:37] put a drive on your wishlist [18:38] Any dupe deleter will carry the risk of deleting all your files if you encounter a bug. :-) Backups are more than a good idea. [19:07] http://paste.ubuntu.com/7241020/ [19:08] dutchuss2016: Hmm, indeed there is no .xinit. Are you sure you saved it in your home directory? [19:08] how do i aaccess the session errors file [19:08] yyes [19:09] Hmm, odd. I'd say recreate it, verify that it's there and see if it dissapears again after a reboot. [19:09] is there a way to make it read-only so it cant be deleted [19:10] and i wanna see what the session errors file says [19:10] "cat ~/.xsession-errors" to read it. Probably not going to contain anything usefull. But the system shouldn't delete the file. [19:12] Script for cjkv started at run_im. [19:12] Script for default started at run_im.
