xmltoki'm trying to netinstall 14.04 but its not able to find kernel modules on the main repos, is that expected or may i have something else wrong?00:13
Lisa92Hi! I know it's possible now, but is it a bad idea to install the Final Beta now (I need it) and then upgrade later or does it not matter? :)00:20
rwwIt doesn't matter.00:20
Lisa92rww: So I won't be an easy target for viruses and malware and such?00:21
jtayloror just install a daily build00:21
Lisa92And I will get everything you guys get? :P00:21
Lisa92jtaylor: What does that mean?00:21
jtaylorthere are new installers created every day00:21
jtaylora daily build, its the same as installing the beta and then upgrading00:21
rwwLisa92: upgrading from a beta to a final release means you'll be on the same repositories as people who install the final release, so you'd get the same security updates and such00:22
Lisa92jtaylor: Hmm...00:22
Lisa92rww: Well, just to make sure... There is nothing "less safe" with using the Final Beta in its current state? :)00:23
jtaylorbetas/release candidates etc are essentially just better tested daily build installers00:23
Lisa92jtaylor: Do I need to reinstall every day? :/00:23
rwwLisa92: it's unreleased, so it is perfectly likely to make your computer explode and has no official support, but apart from that, sure, it's fine00:23
jtaylorno just apt-get upgrade, sometimes dist-upgrade00:23
Lisa92rww: Don't say that! XD00:23
jtaylortechnically 14.04 only gets security support after release, in practice it probably doesn't matter00:23
rwwdon't use pre-release versions if you actually care about the integrity of your data00:23
Lisa92jtaylor: But if it is the same as using the beta and then upgrading, does it really matter? :P00:24
jtaylorit doesn't matter00:24
Lisa92rww: I don't want to wait. :(00:24
jtayloryou just save updating 400mb of packages directly after installing00:24
Lisa92jtaylor: Ahh... I see now.00:24
Lisa92jtaylor: If I decide to do that, where can I get the latest daily build?00:25
rwwLisa92: There's a reason you're supposed to wait. Lots of QA testing between now and then.00:25
jtaylorhttp://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/00:25
rwwBut hey, if you don't care about your data integrity or lack of support, go right ahead.00:25
Lisa92rww: I understand. :(00:25
Lisa92rww: But I DO care.00:25
Lisa92jtaylor: Thanks.00:25
rwwthen don't use pre-release versions of Ubuntu.00:25
Lisa92Gaaaah.00:26
jtaylorits pretty save to install now00:26
Lisa92rww: Well... I guess I could do without support for now, but what do you mean about data integrity? That stuff can get messed up and deleted or stolen in attacks?00:27
rwwayup00:27
jtaylorthat can also happen after the release00:27
Lisa92rww: "ayup" to what? :P00:27
Lisa92Which one?!00:27
jtaylorthere is not going to be that much change in the remaining week00:27
rwwand after release you have prompt security support without waiting for mirrors and a boatload of QA testing00:27
rwwbut hey, apparently jtaylor is volunteering to help you with any and all problems you may have by saying it's fine to install trusty now, so go right ahead00:27
Lisa92XD00:28
jtaylor...00:28
Lisa92I knew this would happen.00:28
rwwit was kinda foretold by the channel topic, yes :P00:30
Lisa92rww: I was hoping "Final Beta" was better than "Pre-release version"... :(00:31
rwwfinal betas /are/ pre-release versons00:31
Lisa92I know. ;(00:31
Lisa92But that the last stage was OK to use.00:31
jtaylorI'm using it since month00:31
jtayloras do probably most in this channel00:32
Lisa92Really? :o00:32
jtaylorits not that scary00:33
Lisa92But rww scared me. :(00:33
rwwjtaylor: There are very, very good reasons we dissuade non-developer users from using Ubuntu development releases, and why we have that text in the /topic. If you're going to disagree with that, I hope you're not going to be dropping the users you encourage on the floor support-wise.00:34
jtaylormake backups, have a second stable release installation available and you are fine00:34
jtaylorI wouldn't recommend using it before beta if you are unfamiliar with the typical error solving methods for debian based distros00:34
jtaylorwithout development release users there is no QA00:35
rwwsure, that doesn't mean you should encourage users who are concerned about safety to use them00:35
rwwthere are plenty of people who don't care about things breaking to do QA00:35
Lisa92rww: It's mostly passwords I'm worried about right now. Are we talking about data loss or hacker attacks? ;(00:36
jtaylordata loss can always happen, make regular backups00:37
rwwWe're talking about "it's not released yet, it has insufficient QA, it is not tested enough for anyone to sanely make assertions of fitness".00:37
Lisa92Gaah. I understand.00:37
rwwthen please stop asking us to do so :P00:37
Lisa92I will stop now. XD00:38
Lisa92Thanks for all the help.00:38
Lisa92Stupid Windows PC... Oh, I'm still here. Hehe.00:38
Lisa92Well... see you!00:38
DarthFrogWhat is the firewall app in Trusty?  there are some programs whose services I can't access (Plex Mediaserver, Calibre ebook library)00:41
rwwufw, but it's off by default00:41
DarthFrogI'm running Kubuntu.00:42
rwwsame answer applies00:42
DarthFrogIf I do "iptables -F", networking is borked, nothing in or out.00:43
DarthFrogiptables -L does give a lot of rules, though.00:43
DarthFrogWhere are the default iptables rules set?00:46
DarthFrogIn /usr/share/ufw/iptables?00:47
rwwDarthFrog: does sudo ufw status say it's active, or no?00:49
DarthFrogrww:  "sudo ufw disable" now allows connections.  So I think I just need to figure out the syntax of "sudo ufw allow" to add new rules for the ports I want to open.00:53
rwwokay, then you turned it on at some point :P00:53
rwwand the basic rule for allowing access to a port from anywhere is sudo ufw allow portnumberhere00:53
DarthFrogNo tcp/udp specification necessary or is the default  to allow both?00:54
DarthFrogAnd, no, I didn't turn it on at any point.00:54
rwwApologies for arguing, but ufw is not and has never been on by default. But anyway.00:55
rwwIt defaults to both tcp and udp.00:55
DarthFrogI wonder if it had been turned on by a previous app installation?  This system has been upgraded from previous versions of Kubuntu.  I don't recall what the original install version was.00:56
rwwUbuntu packages don't turn it on either :P00:56
DarthFrogOh, I'm not arguing about ufw being on by default.00:56
elkyif you find something messing with /etc/ after initial installation of something, report a bug00:57
DarthFrogIt certainly wasn't on in 13.10 as Calibre worked without issue there.  Ugrading to Trusty Beta 1 is when Calibre stopped allowing connections.00:58
elkyit shouldn't mess with /etc/ without asking you00:58
DarthFrogHmm, ufw isn't mentioned in /etc/init.d.00:58

euryalehi guys :)13:52
euryalehow do i install radeon hd 8400 driver for ubuntu 14.04 daily build?13:52
AxizorAre there any known installation bugs with 14.04 b2 64bit desktop?13:54
AxizorLike when the gui for the installer loads, it crashes and reboots my workstation about 5-10'sec later13:54
lordievadereuryale: If you want to fglrx driver you can install it through the jockey (usually called 'Additional Drivers'). Or simply use the open-source radeon driver, then you don't have to install anything.13:57
euryaleok.13:59
euryalei dont have additional drivers popping up on the panel.14:00
AxizorInstalling the catalyst ones aren't hard14:00
euryalenor i see in the system settings.14:00
euryalei have the beta2 of catalyst 1414:00
AxizorI'd install through command line14:00
euryalei mean beta1 march 12, 2014.14:01
AxizorDo you have the driver packaged unpacked somewhere14:02
elhoireuryale, im running a radeon 8400 with open source radeon driver with no problems14:03
elhoireuryale, i have installed kernel 3.14, it seems to be more optimized for APUs14:03
Axizorthe open source amd driver isn't that good lol14:03
AxizorIn fact it's pretty shitty14:03
elhoirAxizor, well, it works well for me14:04
AxizorOh Eurydice has an APU eh?14:04
euryale@elhoir. really?14:04
AxizorSorry for messing your name up, it was the ipad14:04
elhoireuryale, yup14:04
AxizorI have an APU too14:04
AxizorOpen source drivers always were bad with it14:04
euryale@elhoir. can u point me where to download the open source driver for apu?14:04
elhoireuryale, since i installed kernel 3.14, unity works much more fluent in my notebook14:04
euryalenice :)14:05
elhoireuryale, open source driver??14:05
AxizorEuryale, why do you want an open source driver?14:05

AxizorLol14:05
euryaleahm lol14:05

euryalemy mistake hehe14:05
elhoireuryale, you dont need another driver - just xserver-xorg-video-radeon :)14:05
AxizorJust download the latest linux package and install through command line14:05
AxizorIt will probably be the most stable14:05
euryalei have is the linux amd catalyst 14.314:06

axizor_Exactly :)15:34
axizor_It's a closed minded way of thinking, but it is logical so I respect people's opinions15:35
ikoniaaxizor_: if you're new to linux, how to debug and resolve problems that are either a.) genuine problems b.) not problems but user error due to experience can waste a lot of time and effort for yourself, and others fixing problems that don't exist15:35

zequenceelhoir: -generic is more tuned towards servers, while -lowlatency is a bit more preemptive and better suited for desktop use16:00
elhoirzequence, you have -server for servers :)16:01
zequenceWe package if for Ubuntu Studio, mainly for audio use - where, for instance, if you want to play on a soft synth, you can get the latency down so the sounds come just a few ms after a keyboards press16:01
zequenceelhoir: There's no such kernel anymore16:01
zequence-generic is the server kernel16:02
elhoirahhh, yeah, i see16:02

zequenceon -lowlatency, the throughput is sacrificed for preemptiveness16:02
elhoirzequence, so you recommend -lowlatency for desktop ?16:03
zequenceI've heard something like 10-20% less throughput on -lowlatency16:03

ejoNote: I had the same trouble in 13.10 before upgrading to 14.04 final beta, in fact slightly worse.  And not the entire time, only the past two months.18:05
ejothanks bekks: it's about 30 to 45 seconds, varies a little each time, and used to be more like 5 sec.18:05
ejoThe fact that this began somewhere during the middle of using 13.10 makes me think it's likely related to packages installed.  I generally don't enable 3rd-party repositories except one for emacs.18:07

beidlnf7, not slow for me, but of course, ymmv. I actually remember indicator-synapse having a hotkey option, but maybe they removed that18:36
nf7bekks: This is spotlight: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2531 , Synapse and Synapse-Indicator are both excellent replacements (well, Spotlight can actually look at a files data, but I don't really care about that), but those problems I mentioned before stop me from using them.18:37
nf7beidl: I don't really mean slow in the computing speed sense, I should have used "heavy". I like spotlight (and the linux alternatives) because they are minimal and to the point.18:37

k1l_macscam: if you want to partitionate manually then do it. or choose ubuntu to use that one partition20:42
macscamk1l_ i need to partition maually because i want to install alongside windows20:43
bekkspenguin42: Important bugs are still fixed, like this one: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub-installer/+bug/129262820:44
k1l_macscam: there should be an automated "install alongside windows" option (if you dont use fancy windows install settings)20:44
ubottuLaunchpad bug 1292628 in grub-installer (Ubuntu) "'grub-install --force "(hd0)"' fails on trusty during installation" [High,Fix released]20:44
bekkspenguin42: That bug was fixed yesterday and the fix was incorporated into todays daily.20:44
k1l_macscam: but i suggest you make at least 2 partitions out if that one: one ~~20-30GB for / and the rest for /home20:44
bekkspenguin42: final freeze does not mean "no, we wont fix bugs for a week now"20:44
penguin42bekks: Oh so it's more slushy then....20:45
k1l_macscam: then you chose that both partitions in the installer and tell the installer to use them (mount them) as / and /home.20:45
penguin42bekks: Every project has a different idea of how frozen a freeze is and how final a final is :-)20:45
bekkspenguin42: finnal freeze refers to "feature freeze", not to "bug fix fixing freeze"20:45
penguin42bekks: Thanks20:46
macscamk1l_ ok what sizes should they be20:46
k1l_macscam:as i said: / is just for the system and 20-30 GB are enough. rest for /home20:47
penguin42bekks: Good, last nights live does have openssl 1.0.1f-1ubuntu2 openssl which seems to have the latest fixes20:57
bekkspenguin42: Yeah.20:58
k1l_!sslbug | penguin4220:58
ubottupenguin42: A fix for the recent OpenSSL vulnerabilities (2014-0076 & 0160) has been pushed to the Ubuntu repositories, see http://www.ubuntu.com/usn/usn-2165-1/ and http://heartbleed.com/ for more information.20:58
penguin42bekks: It's in particular a secure live CD I want rather than being able to do updates20:58
bekkspenguin42: For me its pretty important for being to actually kickstart 14.04 instead of 12.04 :)20:59
penguin42bekks: In my case I tend to boot VMs off liveCDs for anything I want to do really securely21:02
