knomewe will change the topic of this channel and publish a blog post, update social media etc when it's out00:24
james0r2okay cool. that was my next question. is there an easy url i can check from my phone? like xubuntu.org/releases/ or something?00:25

paul___Hello, I've a problem after resuming my Laptop (Thinkpad X230) from sleep in xubuntu trusty beta. I can see the lockscreen, but after entering my password the screen is black. Switching VTY works, but the display brightness is tuned all the way down. Going back to VTY 7 it still shows a black screen, and using brightness controls does nothing. This is intel (i915) hardware. Anyone has an idea :-) Thanks11:33

Meerkati wish I could install ubuntu with a no-pop-ups flag. I hate when software assumes I want something done.14:51
amigamagicwhat popups?14:52
Meerkat"notifications" as they're so neatly called.14:52
amigamagicI think you can disable them, but I think is nice to have some feedback when you insert a lan cable, when you connect to a wi-fi, etc.14:54
Meerkatthere doesn't seem to be a way to disable all of them in one go. Every program that uses them has to have that option disabled.14:55
holsteinMeerkat: remove notifications14:55
Meerkatthat's how it was around 2012 anyway. I haven't bothered looking recently.14:55

holstein!release15:42
ubottuXubuntu releases a new version every 6 months. Each version is supported for 9 months (regular releases) to 3 years (long-term suppport (LTS) releases). More info at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases & http://wiki.ubuntu.com/TimeBasedReleases15:42
knomec3l, it will be released at the same time.15:42

Silveyphew for party channel +m15:45
c3lwhat are  you talking about? there are new files with no beta label15:45
knomec3l, the release is not final until it's announced.15:45
knomec3l, downloading those files will only make the release get postponed.15:45
c3lknome:  why did they upload new files and make them public?15:46
knomec3l, because they have to be made public at some point.15:46
knomec3l, updates are being pushed to the server now, so please hold off from downloading.15:47
c3lknome:  so these are the final images, but one shouldnt touch them yet?15:47
holsteinc3l: its not released yet.. but, *very* close15:47
knomec3l, there is no guarantee they are the final images... and you are correct, you shouldn't touch them until the release is announced15:48
c3l I dont get what makes this "not being released" the final images are right there15:48
c3laha okay I see15:48
knomewell it is not released until the announcement is out, the same as every release15:49
knomethey could hide the images, but what difference would that make? people would hammer the server anyway15:49
knomeone of the release team members just told he can't upload stuff that's needed for the release because people are hammering the server15:49
knomeso it's literally postponing the release15:50

raccoon__thank you so much so i dont use lvm ?16:42
Meerkatraccoon__, just so you are aware. RAID-0 will merge all the drives you select into 1. The operating system will think it is 1 big hard drive and if you remove 1 of them you cannot boot. If 1 of the drives fails you also cannot boot.16:42
raccoon__that is ok16:42
Meerkatraccoon__, you put LVM on top of the raid-0 volumes.16:42
raccoon__i see so this is something i do before the lvm process16:42
elfyMeerkat: "During the encryption password setting the keyboard will be set to US" is that related to the ibus bug - if that is the case then all one needs do is purge it prior to upgrading - if encryption is working differently then that needs reporting16:43

m1chaeli'm getting an error when starting virtualbox21:04
mikeche1enArceye: what problems are you having with web pages21:04
Arceyemikeche1en, Probably easier for me to say I moved from winXP a few months ago this PC feels like it has become 5 years older than it really is. I am not putting xubuntu or any other linux distro down, they just don't run as well for what I do. However xubuntu is free so I don't have high expectations21:09
mikeche1enArceye: hmm i wonder, what are the system specs?21:10
mikeche1enArceye: web browsing should be just as fast as winxp, especially using chrome21:10
Arceyemikeche1en,  AMD athlon64 2GB ram more HDD space than I will ever use with linux21:10
Arceyemikeche1en,  I can some it up in a single word, "Flash"21:11
mikeche1enArceye: hmm it would help to have more ram but 2gb should be decent21:11
mikeche1enArceye: oh yeah flash is a different issue21:11
mikeche1eni pretty much avoid flash completely21:11

Arceyemikeche1en, it's so widely used it's unavoidable, I can't even watch youtube properley ( even using html5 option )21:12
mikeche1enthings like youtube use html5 now21:12
mikeche1enArceye: why doesnt html5 work on youtube?21:13
Arceyemikeche1en, yes it works, but a 30 second video lasts 32 seconds , it's just slow21:13
mikeche1enArceye: hmm weird, might be the video card?21:14
mikeche1eni also use flashblock to make sure only 1 webpage is running flash at a time21:14
Arceyemikeche1en, I am sure the gfx card is the excuse I have been given every time, but I will never accept that as the answer, I used ubuntu 10.x some years ago and youtube worked perfectly21:15
mikeche1enArceye: have you checked about installing proprietary drivers?21:16
mikeche1enor maybe disabling desktop compositing21:16
Arceyemikeche1en, In the end I appreciate the help I get in here, without these channels I would be lost, So I accept there are certain limitations which are unavoidable21:17
Arceyemikeche1en, prop drives not available for my card ATI 3650 DV21:17
mikeche1enArceye: ah yeah, i wonder what the source of the problem is21:18
ArceyeNo idea, all I can say is it worked in the 10.x ubuntu and now by comparison it doesn't, I just accept it, and use this pc for nothing more than basic browsing and irc, there isn't much else I can do with the current OS21:19
Arceyeunfortunately I can't justify win7 on this PC either, so I will just use it till it dies then turn it into a file server21:21
mikeche1enand you are using xubuntu, not regular ubuntu? sometimes unity is very resource intensive21:21
=== Guest8593 is now known as fire

mikeche1enthe only other thing i might suggest would be lubuntu, which uses even less resources21:22
Arceyemikeche1en, I am using xubuntu, all other versions were terrible21:22
mikeche1enbut it sounds like the issue is specifically with flash, not overall system resources21:22
mikeche1eni guess you have tried both firefox & chrome?21:23
Arceyemikeche1en, Just opening the browser FF or chrome takes longer than it does in winXP21:23
mikeche1enArceye: hmm does it have a lot of tabs open or anything? that sounds like some issue besides flash21:24

xubuntu981ok but should i try 32bit or 6422:42
skribblezatchahave you tried restarting x to see if that helps x770?22:42
bekksxubuntu981: if your cpu is 64bit, then it should be 64bit.22:42
=== Zorp is now known as Zorp_
skribblezatchai run a 32bit system since i only have 2gb ram xubuntu981, and its a pae kernel so you are good with 32bit.22:42
skribblezatchayou can run a 64bit system if you want to though, if you have a 64bit cpu.22:43
bekksPAE kernel on less than 4GB are useless.22:43
Zorp_where can i find the alternate iso image(s)?22:43
skribblezatchai have a 64bit system, but i run a 32bit system.22:43
knomeZorp_, there aren't any.22:43
bekksZorp_: The are obsolete.22:43
skribblezatcha32bit OS*22:43
Zorp_why is the current release page referencing them then?22:43
x770skribblezatcha, yes, I did. I didn't help :-/22:44
knomeZorp_, which one?22:44
Zorp_http://xubuntu.org/getxubuntu/requirements/22:44
xubuntu981ok thanks22:44
Zorp_". Installing with the alternate or Minimal CD requires you to have only 128 MB of memory."22:44
skribblezatchahmmm, i see. x770 are you using a final release iso?22:44
knomeZorp_, under the "...for Xubuntu 12.04" header.22:44
goochskribblez, can i ask why?22:45
Zorp_ah, i see22:45
* Zorp_ slaps himself22:45
x770skribblezatcha, I think so - downloaded 2 hours ago using the torrent link on the announcement page22:45
skribblezatchai run a 32bit OS because it uses less resources meaning less ram and less cpu than an 64bit OS. so if i only have 2gb ram, what is the point of me running a 64 bit OS gooch?22:46
skribblezatchaok cool x770. i was just wondering..thanks.:)22:46
skribblezatchai just went and added the trash to the desktop here and then removed it. so i dont know what would cause that x770.22:47
skribblezatchax770: how did you remove the icons if you dont mind. you did remove them through the gui right..and didnt just right click on an icon and go to delete?22:51
x770skribblezatcha, I appreciate your help ... the beast is just not behaving the same here ... Yes, via right click -> Desktop Settings -> Icons -> Default Icons (there I unticked all icons, i.e. Home, Filesystems, etc.)22:53
skribblezatchaok, and then to retick them doesnt add them back? thats odd.22:53
skribblezatcharight, i hear you man. sometimes it happens and leaves us baffled in the process. lol22:53
x770skribblezatcha, :-X22:54
skribblezatchalol22:54
jamesmcveityknome: I've yet to upgrade a dist.  Does doing a fresh install vs upgrading any dis/advantages?22:54
goochoh i see22:55
x770skribblezatcha, uhmm, perhaps it's related to the prop. Nvidia driver ... sounds stupid but you never know ... gonna try to revert back to nouveau22:58
x770brb ..22:58
knomejamesmcveity, fresh install won't have configuration (migration) or other upgrade problems, but takes a bit more work, especially if you need to backup stuff.22:59
knomejamesmcveity, other than that, not really, it'll end up pretty much the same22:59
skribblezatchai bet that x770 comes back with things working.:)22:59
jamesmcveityknome: thanks.23:00
peyamno automatic trim23:00
peyamI like it. Had to do some modification otherwise its stable.23:00
PhoenixSTFhey guys, 1st issue of the day, kernel panic on an old eepc 1101ha23:01
PhoenixSTF:)23:01
PhoenixSTFbtw great job on 1404 ;) graz guys23:01
peyamI need to be sure. does 14.04 provide automatic trim?23:02
goochcan i install cinnamon in 14.04?23:04
bekkspeyam: If unsure, add the specific fstab option.23:04
peyamjust did23:04
peyamthanks anyone. time for me to sleep23:04
peyambye23:04
x770skribblezatcha, my problem is solved - it's related to the Nvidia driver and how it handles multiple displays. I had to turn off the laptop display in the dirver settings and voila, all my icons are shown on the external monitor :-)23:14
skribblezatchanice x770, good to hear man.:)23:14
skribblezatchamost times when you hear someone mention what happened to you..or panels disappearing, things like that. its a graphics driver related issue.23:15
x770skribblezatcha, true ... and I feel a little bit stupid ... well, time for a beer here ;-)23:18
skribblezatchaokie dokes x770. have a good one and take it easy.23:18
skribblezatchabe safe and God bless you man.;)23:19
x770skribblezatcha23:22
x770skribblezatcha, thx for your support man. Just opened a Paulaner Lager ,,, unfortunately we still can't transfer a can of beer ... I think I should file a bug for Xubuntu ;-)23:22
delthmm... some pretty bad bugs still present in the final release... "Window manager shortcut keys don’t work after reboot (1292290)"23:22
skribblezatchalol x770.23:23
deltoops wrong channel23:23
skribblezatchayw man. i actually dont drink but the gesture is dope.;)23:23
schreberhow is thunar behaving in 14.04 ?23:28
PhoenixSTFoh crap, my wifes eeepc 1101ha just burned the charger plug....23:29
PhoenixSTFwhile I was trying use a boot pen23:29
skribblezatchao wow PhoenixSTF. is she going to be upset?23:31
PhoenixSTFskribblezatcha, whe will probably demand a new one, it is an old ass netbook23:31
PhoenixSTF*she23:31
skribblezatchai think that you can get one of those universal chargers at walmart or something.23:32
PhoenixSTFskribblezatcha, thats the thing its is not the charger23:32
skribblezatchamy dad's laptop's charger went and he got one of those universal chargers for it and it works.23:32
PhoenixSTFI have a 1215B that uses the same charger23:32
skribblezatchao i see. i get what you mean now..wow.23:33
skribblezatchaso it flipped out. then its time for a new one.23:33
PhoenixSTFI think it was the mobo that has gone kaput23:33
skribblezatcharight, i feel you.23:33
PhoenixSTFya... time to search for a new one23:33
PhoenixSTFhardest part is, fiding one without the freaking windows thing23:34
skribblezatchai know right. well there are people that have successfully booted a linux distro using those uefi bios setups.23:35
PhoenixSTFthats not even the issue, I have to send the laptop to the brand to remove the licence cause I wont agree with the EULA, I may have to wait like one month for it23:36
PhoenixSTFspeacially I am living on a island that makes things so much difficult23:37
skribblezatchao i see.23:37
recon_lapI hope never to buy a computer that has the BIOS locked to a vender23:38
skribblezatcharight right. so if you send the laptop to the brand to remove the license, what does that allow PhoenixSTF?23:38
skribblezatchaor what does that do?23:38
skribblezatchasame here recon_lap..but that means that basically you arent getting a new one.23:38
skribblezatchabecause it seems like thats the norm now.23:38
recon_lapmaybe it's time to start a computer manufacture business23:39
skribblezatchai know right..or go and check out a system76 system.23:40
skribblezatchai think that they are built without the uefi bios setup.23:40
PhoenixSTFthat allows you to get the "Windows TAX refund"23:40
PhoenixSTFalmost 10% of the laptop price is a "Windows Tax"23:40
PhoenixSTFSo I wont give any money to M$23:41
skribblezatchao ok, i see PhoenixSTF. i didnt know that..thats good to know.23:41
schreberOutside of Whisker are you guys seeing anything really new/special in this version?23:43
PhoenixSTFskribblezatcha, my brother got a Acer laptop and he did not accept the EULA, so acer removed the License and returned almost 40€ to him23:43
PhoenixSTFschreber, no botom bar23:43
schreberI always removed that anyway23:43
knomeschreber, read the release announcement.23:43
skribblezatchanice PhoenixSTF. yeah i am definitely going to have to do that for sure.23:44
skribblezatchayeah i can see things that are different schreber. go in to settings manager and have a look around..and start up pidgin messenger.23:44
schreberremove pidgin as well. I tend to remove a bit from a base install23:45
PhoenixSTFskribblezatcha, a lot of stores dont like to do it, or dont know to, just press them and they will do it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bundling_of_Microsoft_Windows23:45
skribblezatchao ok i actually use pidgin schreber, so i keep it and dont install anything else since i dont use it.23:46
PhoenixSTFskribblezatcha, we the people are not obligated to buy something with a tax in it, much less a company like m$23:46
skribblezatchacool PhoenixSTF. thanks..i will keep that in mind.23:46
schreberrelease notes are kind of bland/lacking any real detail23:46
PhoenixSTFskribblezatcha, np23:46
skribblezatchayeah, i actually do appreciate that PhoenixSTF..because i will do it. thats awesome.23:47
schreberThunar was and still is my biggest issue with Xubuntu23:47
skribblezatchathats what a few say. i am a home user schreber, so i dont have many issues to be honest.23:48
schreberskribblezatcha: I use it at home as well but my thing is that Thunar would crash at random, heck even when I was simply trying to close it. Never noticed this issue under a vanilla Debian so I was thinking it was somehow a Ubuntu introduced issue23:49
skribblezatchao ok, wow. yeah i have never had that issue before. thunar has been good to me as far as opening and closing and responding to what i do within it.23:50
schreberI've gotten to the point where I'd just disable thumbnails because that was one of the major issues for me back in 12.04 and it didn't seem to get a f ix.23:53
skribblezatcharight, i feel you schreber.23:54
schreberI'd run another DE but the alternatives aren't of my liking and well lxde feels more like frankenstein's monster to a real DE to me.23:55
skribblezatchai know right, i cant stand lxde.23:55
skribblezatchaif i am not using XFCE i tend to mess with Cinnamon. other than that i dont like the other DE's either.23:55
james0rif i installed the beta 2 release how do i upgrade to the final release?23:57
schreberIt's like blackbox with xfce panel and well a bit more but it just doesn't feel right. Cinnamon, something I used was nice for an alt. to say Gnome but had its problems for me as well since the panel/wing would often break (this was like 1.6 or something).23:57
james0ri just installed it yesterday. is it a better idea to download the new final release image and install?23:57
knomejames0r, sudo apt-get dist-upgrade23:58
skribblezatchawell that was an issue that i had with CInnamon too schreber. at this point in the game it has a few issues that still need to be worked out and then its good to go.23:59
james0rahh i did that last night and it pulled in a bunch of stuff but i thought the final release hadn't been released yet. did it again and there's nothing to upgrade.23:59
james0rso i guess i'm up-to-date with the final release?23:59
knomeyep.23:59
skribblezatchayeah you are good to go james0r, be on the lookout for things that could be wrong though. if anything is, then grab the final and install it.23:59
