shpekk00000:25
celtha_hi all00:34
code_chimpHello00:35
celtha_i want ask about integrated graphic card..00:36
celtha_i have i5-4670 and dont can up resolution more that 1024/76800:37
celtha_i dont know waht is the problem..... need any special drivers on kubuntu 14?00:37
giantpunehi.  can somebody tell me how to ignore a broken package in kubuntu 14.04?  i used teh built-in driver thingy and it installed nvidia driver and now synaptic is complaining that the default xorg driver is broken.01:12
giantpunei'd like to jsut ignore it if possible as the nvidia one seems to be working.01:12
EtriaphHi folks.01:14
EtriaphDoes anyone have a solution for an NVIDIA GeForce 700 series card for 14.04 by any chance?01:15
Etriaphlspci shows the card and detects it properly, but I can't get a working nvidia/xorg combination working01:15
giantpunethe default driver menu doesnt recommend anything for it?01:16
giantpunesettings>system settings -> driver manager01:16
EtriaphNope01:16
EtriaphAnd I know nvidia's driver supports the card01:16
EtriaphI can't seem to download it from nvidia.com, it keeps dropping the connection during the transfer01:17
EtriaphI'm stuck in an 800 x 600 display through an HDMI cable to a 21.5" monitor :(01:19
EtriaphI did install from the beta 2 ISO, I guess I can try burning the official release ISO and reinstall01:21
giantpunei took the official update today and my crappy nvidia card is worknig pretty well with teh default driver01:21
EtriaphMy install doesn't see that it's there, nvidia-settings has no configuration available01:22
EtriaphRan nvidia-xconfig and then I couldn't get a display from lightdm01:22
EtriaphHad to back that out and continue from there01:22
EtriaphI should be able to run 1920 x 1080 (as I do on my Win7 install) but ya, it doesn't think I have an nvidia card installed somehow01:23
keithzgAciD`: For the record, I rebooted again and the problem has actually reappeared. So I think you lose that bet :P01:45
keithzgBut it's Friday evening and this is my work computer, soooo . . .01:47
* keithzg will worry about it Monday.01:48
keithzg...oh, wow, the clock on this PC is off by over 40 minutes now? Okay, yeah, it's definitely something weird in regards to this computer's perception of time . . . whatever. It's the weekend!01:54
* keithzg actually leaves this time.01:54
etriaphFigured out how to get nvidia card working02:12

westyvw_great notes migration isnt working, nor is anakonda after upgrade. Ideas?03:22
westyvw_akonadi i mean03:22
valoriewestyvw_: two channels I can recommend are #kontact and #akonadi03:26
valoriehowever, it is now the 4-day Easter weekend in most of Europe03:27
westyvw_valorie: no posts by the kubuntu team yet then03:27
valorieso answers might be slow in arriving03:27
westyvw_4 days?03:27
valorieright, everyone was working 20 hour days, and many have taken off for the weekend03:27
valorieyes, I heard that Th-Sun or Fri-Mon are both common03:28
westyvw_lol, i guess so i too am taking Monday off03:28

valorieyou aren't alone; I heard of another person whose akonadi process wouldn't start03:29
valorienot very many problems this time out though03:30
westyvw_i think i found the solution to this, but i need to reboot to update the video driver. geez .03:34

ptyxanyone about?04:27
ptyxupgraded to 14.04 and it broke04:28
ptyxhow disappointing04:28
facorreadWhat happened?04:28
bjrohanUh-Oh. In my Muon Update manager it looks for updates, then it says waiting for configuration file, and nothing else04:29
ptyxfacorread, it froze while loading the desktop04:29
hkuieaglehi, ubuntu upgraded from 12.04 to 14.04, when boot up it shows "error: malformed file \n press any key to cotinue". Anyone knows how to fix this?04:29
ptyxi've not done a clean install and now i can't install my basic apps04:29
ptyxreally crap04:29
ptyxmuon discover is awful, and it won't allow me to install package manager04:30
facorreadOK wild guesses for both hkuieagle and ptyx, try clean installs again.04:30
facorreadI also dislike muon discover.04:30
facorreadI prefer muon but it has a bug about purging and removing; I use synaptic as workaround.04:30
ptyxi like how it looks but it simply doesn't work half the time04:30
ptyxhow to install synaptic?04:31
ptyxthe package manager should never be removed, ever04:31
facorreadIn a console run apt-get install synaptic muon04:31
facorreadmuon may work for you.04:31
facorreadSorry04:31
facorreadsudo apt-get install synaptic muon04:31
hkuieagleAfter showing that error, it can start up normally. I guess something is wrong with Grub04:32
valoriebjrohan: you might run dpkg as well, to reconfigure04:32
ptyxit's saying i'm missing libmuonprivate204:32
bjrohanvalorie: what do I entger on the console to do that?04:33
ptyxfacorread: thx04:33
valoriesudo dpkg --configure -a04:33
bjrohanvalorie: says locked by another process, Muon is not running though04:34
valoriesudo rm /var/lib/dpkg/lock04:34
facorreadptyx wait, is your desktop loaded already?04:34
valoriethen run it again (up-arrow)04:35
valoriebefore reinstalling, why not try `sudo apt-get install -f`?04:35
valorieand get the malformed package fixed04:35
valoriehkuieagle: ^^^04:35
bjrohanvalorie: it is running but I see some errors passing by04:36
valoriealso, there seems to be a mixup between muon package manager and muon discover here04:36
valoriesome prefer one, some the other, but 14.04 shipped with Discover04:36
bjrohanvalorie:04:37

valorievery good, unopaste04:37
valoriealso, `top` is your friend04:39
valorieit shows you what is running, and it's often easy to kill stuff from there04:40
hkuieaglevalorie: you mean reinstall grub2?04:40
hkuieagleit's a upgrade from 12.04 to 14.0404:40
DarthFrog"htop" is even better than "top".04:40
valoriethere was advice above to reinstall04:40
valoriewhich shouldn't be necessary04:41
valorieDarthFrog: htop does give you more info, but that isn't always necessary04:42
DarthFrogvalorie: I find htop to be a clearer display and the kill facility is much better.04:43
DarthFrogNothing wrong with regular top, though.04:43
valorieI use both at times04:44
valorieamazing the power in 3 or 4 letters04:44
coveyok. so, updated to 14.04 and upon restart got "grub_term_highlight_color not found. whats the solution?05:22
coveyi only have access to grub rescue05:22
valoriewow05:24
valoriegrub rescue is horrible05:24
valoriecovey: do you have a recent backup of your ~/home ?05:25
coveyunfortunately i dont believe so.05:26
coveyi dont remember the last time i backed it up05:26
=== dan is now known as dcmul
valoriedo you have home in its own partition?05:28
coveyyes, but unless im mistaken that would be a predominantly storage partition and not the os partition05:31
valoriethat means you can do a clean install and still have your home untouched05:31
valorieif it is worth keeping05:31
coveyif that doesnt sound right then say so. im not exactly the brightest bulb when it comes to this kind of thing05:31
valoriehome is mostly storage, yes05:32
valorieyour files, songs, photos etc.05:32
valorienot everyone puts it onto a separate partition though05:32
valorieif you did not, then a clean install will erase your home05:32
coveytheir are a fair amount of things i dont want to lose. im on a business trip though and dont really have anything to do a clean install with. im on my phone at the moment05:33
valoriecovey, here is an idea -- can you get to some big box store that would have hard drives and enclosures?05:34
coveyi run a 2 hd dual boot system, so yes, most of the non-os stuff is saved on a separate drive05:35
valoriecool05:35
coveyyes05:35
valoriethen you only need a usb key, but you have to have A computer to download the ISO onto05:35
coveyok. so there isnt anything i can do from the command line to fix the problem?05:36
valorieeven a windows box can probably burn an ISO onto a thumb drive05:36
valorieright now, your only commandline is the grub rescue05:36
valorieI personally have never been able to rescue grub with it05:37
coveyi could probably boot to the windows side, save it on a thumb drive and then redo the kubuntu side actually05:37
valoriesure05:37
valorieif grub rescue lets you do that05:37
valoriethat's the problem05:38
coveywell, that seems fitting. itd be too simple if it worked05:38
valorieoooo, this might work:05:38
valorieset root=(hd0,msdos6)05:38
valorieset prefix=(hd0,msdos6)/boot/grub05:38
valorieinsmod normal05:38
valorienormal05:38
valoriefrom grub rescue05:39
valorieaskubuntu.com/questions/192621/grub-rescue-prompt-repair-grub05:39
valorielook at that, it might be helpful05:39
coveygot "no such partition"05:41
coveythanks for the link btw05:41
valorieit has a good number of strategies05:41
coveyso, got all that to work and still got the same term highlight color error. any other ideas?06:02
ofcafter I upgraded from Kubuntu 12.04 to 14.04 randomly crashes system06:02
valoriehmmmm06:11
valoriedid you google that error?06:12
valorieok, I just did, and it seems that it is cause by uefi06:14
valorieugh06:14
valoriehowever, some say that `grub2-install --target=i386-pc /dev/sda` helps06:14
valorieof course, if you have a different box or configuration, change that.....06:14

Aquablue1704Good morning ppl, I have a question concerning the new Kubuntu 14.04 LTS release. Every time I try to install something via the Muon Software Center, Kubuntu notifies me about the changes it will make. In this case it wants to remove "xserver-xorg-video-all". Is it safe to continue?07:51
lordievaderFlameReaper-PC: At this stage I'd go for a fresh install.07:51
FlameReaper-PClordievader: that would suck, and I don't really want to take the time for that07:51
lordievaderFlameReaper-PC: The amount of breakage apt predicts cost more time.07:52
lordievaderAquablue1704: You probably don't want to remove that. What are you trying to install?07:52
FlameReaper-PCI guess I'll hold back from upgrading for now...07:53

Aquablue1704@lordievader: The message pops up when I try to install anything from the Muon Software Center: Gimp, VLC, Steam etc. It doesn't matter what it is, it always wants to remove the "xserver-xorg-video-all" package. I am running on a fresh Kubuntu 14.04 64-bit installation.07:55

shaikadzariany opinion?14:29
melodienot very nice looking, might be improved in the future?14:29
shaikadzariI don't like the look and feel. Also, using 2 screen with different resolution14:30
melodieshaikadzari opinion when I will have booted a 14.04 in a few minutes14:30
shaikadzarithe login box is wrong14:30
melodieshaikadzari do you need the login screen? If not you could boot directly to the desktop14:30

melodieloginctl is the answer :p14:32
yofelgood to know ^^14:33
melodieloginctl session-status <ID>14:34
melodie" loginctl list-sessions " gives the ID14:34
melodieamong else14:35
melodieloginctl --help is very full14:35
melodieshaikadzari when using another login manager you will need to check if you have an active session, this is why I was fiddling with loginctl which I didn't know about until yofel told me about logind14:35
melodiebecause if your session is not active, there are things you won't be able to do, not having the autorisations14:36
melodieit can be accessing to internal drives, to usb drives or else14:36
shaikadzariHum, I'm confused. Should it not be the job of SDDM to do that ?14:37
melodieshaikadzari this depends how well or bad it is configured14:40
melodieI have tested slim and nodm in Precise and I met with this issue, not active session, no access to other internal drives (other distros besides the one in use)14:41
yofelsddm should have proper logind support as it's rather new, so I would believe it'll handle it fine14:41

Canidlordievader: yes. And they are selected in the driver manager14:50
yofelhm, not good. all lines should look like the vboxhost one14:50
melodieyou copy the desktop file related to icons from /usr/share/applications to ~/.local/share/applications (copy as user)14:50
melodieand in the user side you add a line in the files such as this:14:50
yofelCanid: does 'sudo dkms autoinstall' do anything?14:51

cjwelbornI am so confused, and pissed at the same time. I did a release upgrade from 13.10 to 14.04, it wrecked my Apache setup (due to Python3.4 being the default), but thats okay I can fix it. What really sucks is my laptop is very slow. Delays when starting programs, delays between keyboard/mouse activity.19:53
cjwelbornI think baloo is doing it19:54
roney_cjwelborn, I was having the same problems19:54
cjwelbornIs baloo something I can disable? I don't know anything about it really. I think nepumok (spelling?) didn't have this problem.19:54
roney_disabled baloo everything went back to normal19:55
roney_you can't actually disable it19:55
cjwelbornroney_: did you uninstall/remove baloo, or disable it through other means?19:55
roney_cjwelborn, I added my home folder to the places I don't it to index19:55

roney_I don't want it to index*19:56
cjwelbornroney_: i see, that would probably help me because my home folder is huge. I'm gonna look into it.19:56
roney_good luck19:56
cjwelbornroney_: thanks man, I read up on baloo, and adding ~/ to the ignored list. It kinda stops baloo in it's tracks, which is exactly what I needed. It worked well for me. I just rebooted, and there is no more crazy memory usage happening. What were they thinking with that? Geez..20:15
roney_cjwelborn, I share your feelings ...20:16
andy123and so do I. It didnt use much memory or CPU for me, but the disk I/O was WAY too big.20:17
andy123sudo iotop shows that20:19
cjwelbornhmm.. I just installed iotop. I didn't know about that one. Could come in handy in the future. Baloo was using more and more memory, everything was way too slow and Chrome would crash with a 'Not enough memory to load page" error. It sucked.20:21
cjwelbornSo it made searching for answers and fixing my apache problem very frustrating. Problem solved though, thank god.20:22
cjwelbornI have 4GB of RAM, not that great, but surely enough to run Kubuntu under normal circumstances.20:23

valorieit does take awhile, for sure23:33
roccoyeah..23:33
valorieeasier than installing anew, though23:34
roccoright23:34
bpromptziew:     hmm    iirc  14.04 uses oracle's java 8, which is downloadable from oracle -> http://www.webupd8.org/2012/09/install-oracle-java-8-in-ubuntu-via-ppa.html23:34
valoriemy son says the opposite; installing is quick and he'd rather do that23:34
roccohe is young Xd23:34
valorieziew: what isn't working in chromium?23:34
ziewjava23:34
valoriethat's what I use, and I haven't seen anyproblems23:34
ziewdo i have to instal java-8 instead -7 at 14.04?23:35
bprompthmmm well, for me I'd rather do anew.... the .iso is 1gb so no biggie23:35
valoriewhat specifically isn't working though?23:35
bpromptziew:     afaik 14.04 requires 823:35
ziewchromium do not see java23:35
ziewjava works with firefox23:35
valorieto do *what* specifically?23:36
olimpic\server irc.irc-hispano.org23:36
valorieolimpic: you'll need to do that command in your irc client23:36
valorieright now, you're in freenode IRC23:36
bpromptin irc is usually  -> /server .....23:37
ziewbprompt: how to install java8 on 14.04?23:38
valoriebprompt: does that *change* servers, or just add another?23:38
roccobrb..23:38
bpromptvalorie:    depends on the client, on say xchat  iirc it just loads another on another tab23:38
valoriecool, I've never tried that23:39
valorieI set it up in the konversation options to join 3 servers23:39
bprompton other irc clients like mirc, it simply quits the current and loads the new one, in mirc you'd have to do ... I think is /mserver   or so23:39
valorieI'll try it next time i want to chat on oftc, maybe23:40
valoriealso, I usually see server/channel like: irc://irc.freenode.net/kubuntu23:41
