nonyaafter reboot00:17
deltllo00:32
delthello00:32
deltam at my parents house00:32
deltinstalled xubuntu 14.04, there's a TON of problems with it00:32
deltmouse wheel in titlebars don't shade window00:33
deltdesktop properties hangs00:33
deltclosing the laptop lid leaves the system with a blank screen, completely unusable and no way to recover other than reboot00:33
deltxfce-settings is not in the upper left menu00:34
deltncurses boxes that apt-get pops up cannot be closed00:34
deltanyway i managed to ssh to my home and connect to this irc client.... :/00:35
deltTHIS RELEASE IS JUNK00:36
knomedelt, please calm down.00:36
deltsorry but it's kind of true :/00:36
knomedelt, if you read the release notes you would have known there are some known issues00:36
knomefor the rest, i can't say much than that you should file bugs00:36
deltwell, i just found some more.00:37
delt*sigh* will try again next time i come here.... maybe with linux mint or something.00:37
knomegood luck.00:37
deltpersonally for me i don't need user-friendly, but my parents aren't net admins or programmers00:38
deltanyway be back later from my home.00:38
nonyaif I could get iphone to sync i would totally install xubuntu or any linux os to my system instead of running off usb00:46
nonyait seems that linux os can not  sync iphones00:47
nonyai have tried a whole bunch i have so many live cds00:47
knomenonya, have you tried installing the libimobiledevice package?00:49
knomei know nothing of syncing any "i"device, but that should do it00:49
nonyai have the device when i hook it up show in gigalo file manager also it showes up in network00:50
nonyaand on desktop00:51
nonyabut does not show up in rythmnbox00:52
knomei don't know if rhythmbox is supposed to support those devices00:52
krabadorreally really really congrat, i'm an italian #ubuntu-it operator, i installed ubuntu, kubuntu, xubuntu, lubuntu, and i thing that with 14.04, xubuntu is the one with greater feel and the best in 360°00:54
knomekrabador, thanks, and enjoy00:54
nonyaactully Xubuntu is the only os atleast it shows up00:54
krabadorunity and kde, not too much updates, and i found some bugs, lubuntu it's almost the same, but xubutu became really great00:55
nonyai do have  libimobiledevice4 installed00:56
krabadorubuntugnome it's properly the same00:56
nonyait was installed at system install00:56
knomenonya, do you have a very recent iphone model?00:57
nonyathe only thing is the wireless drivers where not installed but i did that  later00:57
nonyaI have an Iphone 4 am geting the 4s tomorrow00:58
nonyaso which multimedia program supports the Iphones it does ipods and ipads?01:01
knomeno idea.01:02
nonyai installed Itunes in wine no dice and syncios no dice cant seem to see device01:02
nonyaI really like this Xubuntu 14.0401:02
knomei would look further into libimobiledevice, it looks like it should in some way be able to connect01:04
knomeat least it would be a step forward if you could see any of the music/files any way01:04
knomeif you can do that, but it doesn't show up in rhythmbox... maybe there's something wrong with it then01:05
nonyai am installing from synaptic all the idevice and  libimobiledevice and python packs maybe that will work01:05
nonyajust installed going to reboot and see out come will BrB01:06
nonyawell noada with all that i try so far01:16
nonyaknome, trying some more things like banshee and amarok01:24
knomenonya, good luck01:25
nonyawhen i find it the whole world will know and i will keep the data for others to use01:27
nonyaalso i will install Xubuntu on system hard drive as it will run faster then off the usb and do away with windoz01:29
nonyaYa i could run windoz on Vm but that is defeating the pupose of leaving it in the dust to go away for ever01:31
nonyaGates and all those venders need to stop soaking people and making billons on the necks of poor folks01:33
nonyaLinux does wonderful to folks who cant afford the extravagant prices for software i appreciate the work of the developers and volunteers whom make it possible01:37
knomenonya, please note that this is the support channel, you can discuss open software and such in #xubuntu-offtopic01:37
nonyaok sorry about that wont happen again01:37
knomeno problem01:38
nonyais there a way to copy this usb to the hard drive with out total reinstall to hardrive01:41
nonyalike xp had casper program which copied hardrive to another hardrive01:43
nova_I've installed Xubuntu on an old intel d845pebt2 motherboard system.  When I suspend (s3) and resume, it seems that my session isn't saved properly, and I resume from the login screen.  All screen lock options are disabled, so it should resume right to the desktop.  Does anyone have any clues as to why I'm having this problem?02:24
knomenova_, the lock screen looks the same as the login screen. does the button say "unlock" or "log in" ?02:27
nova_unlock02:27
knomeah, right, all lock options are disabled02:27
knomei guess you could just remove light-locker if you don't want locking...02:28
nova_i had this problem before also, with 13.10, then updated to 14.04 and it continued.  So I tried a clean install to make sure it wasnt somethign i misconfigured02:28
nova_oh.  do you mean the options in light locker to either lock or not lock on suspend are disabled and not functional?02:28
knomethey should be functional, but if they aren't, you can at least just remove light-locker02:29
knomei've heard that bug before though, but i'm not sure if it's filed02:29
nova_the funny thing is when i went from 13.10 to 14.04, I had power manager, xscreensaver, and light locker all disabled at one point and it still did it02:29
nova_not disabled..i mean removed entirely02:29
knomehmm.02:29
nova_and it still persisted02:30
knomeeven after reboot?02:30
nova_yes02:30
nova_ill try removing light-loocker again02:30
nova_and rebooting02:30
nova_i asked in xubuntu-devel the other day and someone said it sounded like the session was crashing or something to that effect02:31
knomeaha, then it might be you who i remember talking about it ;)02:31
knomedid you file a bug for that then?02:31
nova_no not yet.  Still not sure if it's a bug.  I'm not sure what it is exactly02:33
knomefile it, it's easier to mark it as invalid that start filing it again later02:33
nova_still not even sure if its a screen lock or a login screen cause yeah they look identical to me02:33
knomewell the point is to make them look identical :)02:34
nova_yeah and i like that idea02:34
nova_should i purge light-locker or is removing it sufficient02:35
knomewell if you don't mind losing all of your settings (i guess you don't mind if you don't want locking anyway), doing a purge won't hurt02:36
nova_yeah the settings dont seem to matter much atm : P02:36
nova_ok brb ty sir02:36
nova_knome: thank you that seemed to work02:41
knomenova_, great02:41
nova_that was beginning to drive me nuts02:41
knomenova_, anyway, if you'd like to help... file a bug describing your situation before the purge02:41
nova_ok02:41
nova_I was also getting alot of apport whoopsie spam before with 13.10...I'm hoping thats quieted down02:42
nonya_got it got the songs from iphone 4 playing now in clementine now yehaw02:42
knomelet's hope so :)02:42
nova_I have to say apport is really really unhelpful for the end user02:43
nonya_that is one step closer now on to the photos02:43
knomenova_, it's helpful for the developers though, and it shouldn't spawn too often after releases are out02:43
nonya_knome, I got it going now02:44
nova_yeah...but just a little bit of info for me to try to look into the problem would be helpful.02:44
knomenova_, good luck in creating an AI that understands your problem02:44
nova_lol true02:44
knomenova_, might as well make it fix it for you while you do that ;)02:44
knomeso... yeah02:44
knomehumans are still needed02:45
nova_but something hinting at what triggered apport to raise alarm I mean02:45
knomemmh02:45
nonya_knome,  gona try for the photos and video now02:46
knomenonya_, good luck02:46
knomei'm off to bed soon02:46
nova_thank you again knome..have a goodnight02:46
nonya_I will let you know tomorrow thanks for the Help02:47
knomeno problem02:47
nonya_God bless gN02:47

Aurvandillhello07:19
nikolambtw, anyone knows why xubuntu does not have gksu installed by default anymore?08:29
james0r2nikolam, not sure. but i just noticed that08:33
larrypghttp://askubuntu.com/questions/284306/why-is-gksu-no-longer-installed-by-default08:33
deltok, so i installed & tested xubuntu on my parents laptop yesterday... same problem with screen turning off when closing the lid, and no way to turn it back on.09:18
deltExcept to either reboot, or run "xrandr --auto" from another machine.09:18
Meerkatdelt, either disable locker settings in the settings menu or uninstall xscreensaver.09:19
deltMeerkat: neither of those fixes worked, on my laptop or theirs.09:19
Meerkatdelt, did you click apply after disabling the locker settings?09:19
deltbtw xscreensaver was replaced by lightlocker.. no idea why09:19
delti personally liked xscreensaver better than lightlocker09:20
deltMeerkat: the screen TURNS OFF, doesn't just go blank.09:20
Meerkatdo you mean that the computer goes into sleep/hibernate? Because that is also an issue, although separate from lightlocker.09:21
deltin some circumstances it did... but even if it didn't, the screen still turned off with no way to turn it back on.09:22
deltthe machine was still running, ie. pressing caps lock still toggled the led09:22
deltand so on.09:22
deltand of course if i could telnet to it from another machine, it wasn't in sleep mode.09:23
deltthere were several other problems as well09:23
deltthe desktop settings crashed if you ran it from right clicking on the desktop.. seemed to be running fine from the settings menu09:24
delts/crashed/froze/09:24
Meerkatdelt, are the power settings set up as you want them?09:25
deltie. window completely unresponsive, try to close it and xfce asks if you want to kill the process after a few seconds.09:25
deltMeerkat: i want closing/opening the lid to do nothing. i was unable to achieve that.09:25
deltanyway i'm back home so i can test further on my own laptop09:26
deltwhich exhibits (most of) the same problems.09:27
Meerkatdelt, bug 1307545 is that it?09:27
ubottubug 1307545 in xfce4-power-manager (Ubuntu) "Power Manager settings are ignored when closing laptop lid" [Undecided,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/130754509:27
deltMeerkat: seems to be similar, but in my case it renders the machine completely unusable. Even trying to switch vt's doesn't work.09:29
MeerkatHandlePowerKey, HandleSuspendey, HandleHibernateKey, HanderLidKey all need to be set to ignore and uncommented (remove the #). Then reboot for it to take affect.09:29
deltwait, i want to handle the power button to turn off the laptop09:30
ochosidelt: why not just switch back to xscreensaver if you prefer it?09:30
deltochosi: i did. it didn't fix the problem.09:30
ochosioh, so you're having a differenz issue, i was mostly reading about the blank/black screen after lid-close09:30
Meerkatdelt, could you check lightlocker settings to see if it really is turned off?09:31
deltochosi: as soon as i close the lid, the screen turns off completely, and there's no way to turn it back on other than rebooting or resetting it from another machine.09:31
deltMeerkat: tomorrow i'll install a small xubuntu 14.04 partition on my laptop.09:31
deltso i can help debug this.09:31
ochosidelt: yes, that's a known issue with light-locker that we're trying to fix09:32
phm-grand_jctRunning ./ccg_client mtg.xml09:32
phm-grand_jct./ccg_client: error while loading shared libraries: libSDL_net-1.2.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory09:32
deltochosi: so, other people are having this same issue?09:32
ochosidelt: yes, that's what "known issue" means ;)09:32
deltwhy not just keep xscreensaver? light-locker is garbage.09:32
deltochosi: but from the live-cd session, i did have the same problem after removing light-locker and installing xscreensaver... iirc09:34
deltbtw does anyone know if ubutnu studio have the same problem?09:36
delts/have/has/09:36
Meerkatdelt, bug 1259339 might be the one.09:36
ubottubug 1259339 in xfce4-power-manager "Xfce4 Power Manager does not restore screen power" [Medium,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/125933909:37
deltcould be...09:38
ochosidelt: i hope you don't expect replies to not very informed and derogatory statements like "software X is garbage".09:38
ochosiand yeah, that issue Meerkat mentioned is the one i was thinking of, but nvm, you're obviously having a different set of problems09:38
deltochosi: ok then, i personally dislike light-locker.09:38
ochosiyeah, as i said, feel free not to use it09:39
Meerkatochosi, so what is the reason light-locker "replaced" xscreensaver?09:39
deltyeah, would also like to know09:39
ochosiwe have an article prepared for that on xubuntu.org, but it hasn't been published yet09:40
ochosiit'll hopefully answer that question in a satisfying manner09:41
ochosidon't wanna just repeat those arguments09:41
ochosishould be published this week09:41
deltok, can't wait to see it09:41
Meerkatthe week just started! :p09:42
deltanyway, i have a spare partition on my laptop. i'll use it to test this issue, and make sure if it does in fact still happen with xscreensaver09:46
xub12Hey there! Can't start Live-session (only shell) - azx_get_response timeout... Who knows advice?09:48

xub12Hey there! Can't start Live-session (only shell) - azx_get_response timeout on HP Pavilion10:03
notwistOn Xubuntu 14.04 I have an issue on my ThinkPad when running the "proprietary, tested" 331.38 nvidia driver. My screen sometimes locks up but when I do ctrl+alt+f6 (switch to tty6) and then back to 7 it's no longer hung. No idea why this is happening or why switching like that helps, any ideas on what I can do to troubleshoot and/or file bugs? Should I try a newer driver from nvidias webpage?10:14
nikolamnotwist, it needs to be reported as a bug, with description, so Nvida could be noted and fix if it is problem with driver10:19
nikolamif you don't report it...10:19
notwistnikolam: where do I file the bug though? since its a proprietary driver I mean10:22
notwistalso I'd like to know what kind of info I could attach to make the bug report better10:23
elfynotwist: in a terminal ubuntu-bug nvidia10:23
elfyit will add all the information it wants10:23
notwistI get "package nvidia doesn't exist", is it because I switched back to the open source driver?10:27
notwistill try switching back10:27
notwistgot the same error but it worked with "nvidia-331" which seems to be the package name10:29
notwistthanks for the help, filed a bug10:41
Meerkati think that for during 14.04's lifetime we should eliminate all the bugs. No more bugs ever!10:45
bluesabreIn a perfect world, we'll do that before 14.04.1 :)10:46
mpxiiHi, I'am new to xubuntu and got the problem that my docky bar suddenly disaper10:58
mpxiiHi, I'am new to xubuntu and got the problem that my docky bar suddenly disapears...10:58
mpxiiI didn't found a solution on the web...there is no error message what makes it difficult to find the problem10:59
nikolamMeerkat, but I got impression that bugs in ubuntu does not get fixed during release lifetime, only in next release. Unless they are major ones, of course.11:02
nikolammpxii, what docky bar, some applet you put on panel dies or something? what xubuntu is it11:03
Meerkatnikolam, I think it is the one xubuntu used to have on the bottom a few releases back.11:04
Meerkatit lists a bunch of common application icons if you hover the mouse over.11:05
nikolamMeerkat, I understand that it is removed by default from 14.04, but one can make a new one, just by setting new panel options and adding items on it..11:05
nikolamit's xfce, you can make how ever you want your panels11:06
mpxiiyeah its a panel bar mac style11:09
mpxiibut it's disapeares11:10
knomempxii, which xubuntu version are you using?11:10
mpxii14.0411:11
knomempxii, ok, there is no bottom panel by default on 14.0411:11
mpxiino, i've added it11:11
knomempxii, ok, so what do you mean by "it disappears" ?11:11
mpxiiso i have to go to the docky chat room?11:11
Meerkatmpxii, I believe the panel item you need to add is called "quick launcher".11:11
mpxiiit closes without leaving a message11:11
knomempxii, what closes? is it a new regular panel, or is it some other software11:12
mpxiino it's extra from the software-center11:13
mpxiican't find quick launcher11:13
knomempxii, have you tried running it from the terminal to see if it outputs something when it's closed?11:13
mpxiithats a good idea11:14
mpxiipuff it's full of error messages ...11:15
knome!pastebin | mpxii11:16

mpxiibut there was not the error which makes the application close11:16
knomeanything and everything can be related11:16
mpxiihttp://paste.ubuntu.com/7298522/11:17
Meerkatespecially in the south11:17
mpxii;-)11:17
knomempxii, there's definitely something wrong here. let me just double-check: did you install this from the official repositories (eg. not a PPA) ?11:18
mpxiiI installed it from the official repositories. And then I found on the web the ppa-stable would be better so i added the ppa but apt-get didn't installed an update by that11:19
knomempxii, well, first: did you run 'apt-get update' and 'apt-get upgrade' after adding the PPA?11:19
mpxiiThat's a difficult question but I guess yes11:20
tlbakhhey, is there any way to upgrade my system to 14.04 from terminal? 'apt-get update -d' won't do it i believe11:20
knomempxii, you can do it now to make sure you have done it11:20
mpxiiyes I did11:21
knometlbakh, which version are you using now?11:21
mpxiinothing changed11:21
tlbakh13.10 i guess11:21
knomempxii, then what does 'apt-cache policy docky' say?11:21
knometlbakh, what does running 'lsb_release -a' in terminal say?11:21
mpxii 500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ trusty/universe amd64 Packages11:21
tlbakhas i said, 13.1011:21
knometlbakh, have you disabled the GUI update manager?11:22
knomempxii, what's the PPA you tried to add? it might have older versions, thus nothing would be upgraded...11:22
tlbakhI didn't even know there is an update manager. I failed big time, i know11:22
knometlbakh, press alt+f2 to open the 'run' dialog, then run update-manager11:23
knometlbakh, is the update manager running now and does it suggest the upgrade?11:23
mpxiiknome, always a step ahead! your right they are on 2.1.4 https://launchpad.net/~docky-core/+archive/stable11:24
tlbakhit suggests that there are files needed to be updated sized about 240mb11:24
tlbakhnot files, software11:25
knomempxii, yeah... they don't even have remotely new versions/repositories11:25
knometlbakh, but not the new 14.04 release?11:26
knomempxii, so what you should do now is11:26
knomempxii, run 'ubuntu-bug docky' in the terminal11:26
knomempxii, and file a bug about your error11:26
tlbakhnope, nothing about 14.0411:26
mpxiiok11:26
knomempxii, ubuntu-bug will gather some information from your system, but please include the pastebin *file* to the bug report as well11:26
knomempxii, here's the plain file: http://paste.ubuntu.com/7298522/plain/11:27
knometlbakh, if you run 'update-manager -d' instead, is 14.04 mentioned then?11:27
mpxiiknome, do I need to get a "launch pad" account?11:27
knomempxii, yes11:28
knomempxii, you can create one here: https://login.launchpad.net/+new_account11:29
tlbakhknome, nope. Nothing can show up when I added '-d'11:29
tlbakhNothing showed up11:29
knometlbakh, nothing? did you close the other update manager window?11:29
tlbakhknome, yes I closed that.11:30
tlbakhknome, Only the title 'Software Updater' shows up but nothing else.11:30
knometlbakh, does it look like it's doing something?11:31
tlbakhknome, don't think so. When I hit the close button, it was immediately closed.11:31
knometlbakh, well let it work on what it's doing for a while, it should definitely end up in the same dialog you saw earlier11:32
tlbakhOke then11:32
mpxiiknome,  I did that...11:34
mpxiithank you for your time!11:34
knomempxii, no problem, and good luck11:38
albiHey guys, I'm having this incredibly annoying problem where if I unmute my speakers there a horrible droning noise.. It's not coming from any app I can see :/12:09

SpeendaShHello everyone ! (:13:19
SpeendaShi'm new in the linux/xubuntu community since Windows XP died i decided to give linux a try ^ ^13:20
SpeendaShit's still a little difficult to understand it all but, i've been able to do almost all i need to with my old computer, but i've noticed 2 problems that are bothrering me frist: i'have installed both the flash plugin and the java stull on the software center but there is still some video player on the web that doesnt function.. ):13:22
SpeendaShis there anyway to corect this ?13:22
SpeendaShand my second problem is about libreoffice, i've tried to open a docx file but the pics and the way the file displays isnt really right... some images hide a part of the text for exemple...etc)13:24
SpeendaShany help ?13:25
GridCubeSpeendaSh, sadly adobe does not provide proper flash for linux anymore, the only way you will get proper flash is by going to the google page for chrome, downloading and installing it from there, that will provide you wil the latest flash.13:25
SpeendaShGridCube:  Oh thanks ! i've installed the web chromium browser, but i'm confused then on how toinstall the lastest flash pluglin... i'll try again and see13:26
GridCubeyou might also need to install privative drivers for your video card, check under the settings options called "software sources" in the settins manager, the last tab of said program is named "aditional drivers" check if you have something avialable for your hardware13:26
GridCubeSpeendaSh, chromium is not chrome13:27
GridCube:)13:27
SpeendaShgridcube> oh flop... i thought there was the same >.< , it's good that you told me this lol13:27
GridCubeas said, you need to get chrome from googles webpage13:27
SpeendaShgribcube> ok then, i'll try google chrome instead ^ ^13:27
GridCubeSpeendaSh, if you type gr and press the tab key you will autocomplete nicks (and in terminals autocomplete application names)13:28
SpeendaShGridCube:  haha yes that what i was doing ^ ^ you don't hear any little "bip" sound when i do ? (:13:29
SpeendaShGridCube:  test !13:29
GridCubeSpeendaSh, :) it works13:29
SpeendaShGridCube:  lol ok good (:13:29
SpeendaShGridCube:  thank you very much for your help ! it's good to see that this cmunity is that helping !13:30
SpeendaShGridCube:  i'm currently installing "wine" with the software manager" in order to make microsoft office starter to run... do you think it's a bad idea ? x:13:31
SpeendaShjust want to have advises lol13:31
GridCubeyou should not attach to microsoft applications anymore, i recommend you to try libreoffice, its a nice alternative, and the compatiblity with ms software is not bad, not excellent either, but not bad.13:32
GridCubegetting office to work under wine was not very easy last time i tried, but that was years ago13:33
SpeendaShGridCube:  Indeed, that's totally what i would like to do but... there is a document that i really need to use and it's displaying so badly with libreoffice... ):13:33
SpeendaShGridCube:  i've try abiworld also, ive also tried to convert the file but no good result...13:34
GridCubeSpeendaSh, when dealing with wine you should always check the appdb first, please see http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=3113:35
GridCubeaparently all applications are in silver :D13:35
SpeendaShGridCube:  oh i didnt know that one... is that a good sign ? silver lol13:36
GridCubesilver is very good13:36
SpeendaShGridCube:  oh cool ! i hope it's going to work with oMicrosoft office starter though... it wasnt listed on "playonlinux" and i wasnt able to install it x:13:37
GridCubeSpeendaSh, the installer is garbage tho, see the page13:38
SpeendaShGridCube:  brrr.... oh flop... indeed it is ...13:38
GridCubesee each application page, it will provide instructions on how to install13:39
SpeendaShGridCube: thank you !13:41
SpeendaShGridCube:  i'm not really confident on this lol i'll try, wine just got installed now.13:41
fballsyou could also try kingsoft office13:42
GridCubeSpeendaSh, as said before i would not have high hopes on ms products13:42
SpeendaShGridCube:  do you use Xubuntu only on your computer(s) ?13:43
fballsit's supposed to have the best support for ms formats13:43
SpeendaShfballs:  really ? o:13:43
fballsthat's what i've heard...haven't tried it myself13:44
fballsmight be worth a shot before having to mess with wine13:44
SpeendaShfballs:  oh do you mean libreoffice ?13:45
SpeendaShoh kingsoft sorry13:45
SpeendaShdidnt saw your reply fballs13:45
GridCubeSpeendaSh, in my computers yes, at work i use windows and linux13:45
SpeendaShfballs:  is kingsoft avaible for linux ?13:46
elfyhttp://wps-community.org/download.html13:46
elfySpeendaSh: ^^ - you want the .deb file13:46
SpeendaShGridCube:  did you ever had any limitations with xubuntu ? in your point of view ?13:46
SpeendaShelfy: oh ! thank you very much ! (:13:47
SpeendaShok then i'm going to try this then13:47
GridCubeSpeendaSh, it depends on your mindset, if you try to do the same things you did on windows you are gonna have a bad time, but if you jsut go with the flow and embrace a new way of thinking not so much13:47
SpeendaSh(fiouuu... just when i was juuust about to try it with wine lol )13:48
elfySpeendaSh: actually forget that link - try http://www.noobslab.com/2013/05/microsoft-office-alternative-kingsoft.html13:48
GridCubejust recently i had to install chrome because a webgame did not wanted to work on the old linux flash, but then i just had to eat my pride and use chrome for just that.13:48
SpeendaShGridCube:  hm... i guess that's the problem... i'm too much used to windows... oh well i'm still open minded and i'm really willing to get used to linux ! (:13:48
SpeendaShelfy:  oh ok haha, thank you very much ! (:13:49
GridCubeit has its perks ofcourse, ultimate hardware, like latest video cards and such might not work properly becuase the drivers are not updated (though hopefully steamOS will change this?)13:49
GridCubethats one of the greatest problems, but beyond that, i don't know, im really used to use linux now XD13:50

damiankhello, one question.. I saw somewhere that reducing swappinness from defaul 60 to 10 would increase speed. But in my case i dont see that increase of speed (i see the disk working anyway)14:30
damiankis that true?14:30
damiankhow does that work?14:30
damianki'm using 14.04b214:30
GridCubefballs, have you tried compton?14:30

* GridCube has had no problems with it14:31
GridCubei have never noticed or cared about tearing though, so i might not be a good comparison point14:31
fballsalso, muh eye candy :D14:32
fballsit's working now, all is good14:32
SpeendaShdamiank:  i've read the same things somewhere too, but when i tried i got an error message at startup and i'm not sure the speed increased...14:32
SpeendaShbut i might have done it the wrong way though...14:33

damiankand i still get more or less same numbers14:35
damiankthats why i asked about it14:35
damiankfor eg. swap decreased from 40 to 35 yesterday after doing it14:36
damiankbut i want it close to zero14:36
damianki dont see a reason to have swap when i have 95% free memory14:36

damianki'll test that on my next reboot thanks elfy14:39
Naphatulif you're using swap without filling ram then there's probably something else wrong14:39
damiankNaphatul i supposed that, so i asked to test14:39
Naphatuljust having it on wouldn't slow anything down if it isn't used14:39
elfydamiank: then if you're only doing 'small stuff' why worry about swap and swappiness14:39
damianki want to test how it works14:39
damiankelfy, i noticed for eg. that when i load thunar, swap increases14:40
damiankactually when i open several windows of it, it gets much worst14:40
damiankand the system goes very slow14:40

damiankis there a bug filled for that?14:42
damiankshould i try to do an update¿?14:43
Artemis3dunno if its better with 14.04 but with 12.04 it loves to eat all your ram if you happen to be downloading a video14:43

Naphatuldamiank, update from what? are you still runing the beta?14:43
damianki'm using b2, yeah14:43
Naphatulthen you obviously you should update14:43
adrenaline_damiank, If you mwant to see what is using swap run top in a terminal and the top process is most likely your culprit.14:44
damianki downloaded that iso approximately at the start of last week14:44
ofloo_hi, i've got this weird problem even after rebooting version 14.04 keeps trying to unmount umount -l /media/ofloo/xbian-beta214:44
Artemis3im holding upgrades until the ibus stuff gets fixed14:44
Naphatuloh and just get iotop and check what's using your disk no need to do wild guessing14:44
Naphatulthat and htop and you can see what is doing what14:44
damiankok i'll test all this14:44
ofloo_the directory isn't there the device isn't there how does xubuntu even know14:44
damianksorry i didnt check if there was a new version i thought we were still on b214:44
ofloo_why does it even keep trying to unmount it after rebooting14:44
Artemis3there is no need to call it b2 if you have kept updating to this day14:45

SimesIs it just me, or is the new Whisker Menu less easy to use than in 13.10 and earlier?  Seems to need more mouse movement and clicks.  (May as well be using Mint.)14:57
brainwashyou can type the first letters of the app you want to start14:59
brainwashso no mouse movement needed at all15:00
SimesTrue, you can.  Shame it doesn't work like the Mint one where if you type a command you do not have installed, it tells you what it might be.15:02
elfySimes: I'm not sure if it's bound to a shortcut - but it is here - Super+Esc then type couple of letters, no mouse at all15:02
SimesIt's not bound by default (at least, not on the Live DVD), but that's a good idea.15:04
NaphatulSimes, mint with what DE? also whiskermenu is great you don't need any clicks15:04

GridCubetuxwizard, go to settings and search the lightlocker settings, there you change where and if to lock15:52
GridCubealso check that you dont have xscreensaver installed along with lightlocker, they dont play well with each other15:53
flan_suseAnyone here place the panel on the bottom (rather than top?)16:13
elfyflan_suse: I do16:15
flan_suseelfy: Do you notice the xfce4-indicator-plugin is glitchy when using a bottom panel?16:16
elfyno, and I've been using it for months16:16
flan_suseFor instance, when the options / size changes (such as disabling wireless, closing a music application, etc), it "resizes" leaving a huge gap on the bottom.16:17
flan_suseI can show you a screen shot.16:17
flan_suseActually, you can try it too.16:19
flan_suseYou use gmusicbrowser or Banshee?16:19
GridCubeflan_suse, i use it at the bottom and never noticed a proble either16:20
flan_suseIronically, I can't take a screenshot, since xfce won't read keyboard shortcuts when I have anything on the indicator tray selected...16:21
flan_suseThere's an easy way to reproduce this.16:21
flan_suseIF you use Banshee, or gmusicbrowser, or can disable wireless for a few seconds.16:22
flan_suseIt's hard to describe / search in a bug report.16:22
elfyflan_suse: I've run through probably 6 music players in the last 5 months never noticedd an issue16:22
flan_suseOkay, so you have one ready to use now?16:22
flan_suseAs long as it supports the sound menu option (Banshee, gmusic, rhthymbox, etc.)16:23
Vakkotaurfwiw, just about the first thing I do is move the panle to the bottom of the screen. No issues noticed.  Maybe I've just been lucky?16:24
GridCubeflan_suse, open the screenshoter, set it up to take a screenshot in 4 seconds, pop the issue window and wait for the screen to shot16:24
flan_suseOkay.16:24
flan_suseYou'll see my example.16:24
flan_suseIt's not like a crash or freeze, but quite annoying none-the-less.16:25
flan_suseUploading now.16:26
flan_susehttp://imgbin.org/images/17155.png16:28
flan_suseNotice where my mouse cursor is.16:28
flan_suseHowever, if I click away, and click again, it will display as normal.16:28
flan_suseHowever...16:28
flan_suseIf I load a song, connect to a network, or do anything else that changes the vertical height of the menu...16:28
flan_suseIt gets "cramped up" at the bottom.16:29
flan_suseUpon closing the music app, or disconnecting from the network, etc,... it will "hover" above the panel again.16:29
flan_suseThis never happens if I place my panel on the top; only when it's on the bottom.16:29
flan_suseIt appears to be an issue when the menu height changes.16:30
flan_suseAs if it was coded to properly re-adjust when using a top panel, but gets confused if it's on the bottom.16:30
flan_suseIt's like pixel (0,0) is on the top of the menu rather than the bottom of the menu.16:31
flan_suseFresh install of Xubuntu 14.04 LTS.16:32
GridCubeflan_suse, never noticed that16:33
GridCubethough to be honest i never use that thing16:33
flan_suseYou can reproduce it easily.16:33
flan_suseIt's not only the sound menu. Same issue with the network menu or anything that uses xfce4-indicator-plugin16:34
flan_suseSuch as disabling wireless (changes the height of the menu), same glitch happens.16:34
GridCubeno, never seen that isue16:34
flan_suseI have a hunch this problem goes unnoticed because Xubuntu defaults with a top panel.16:34
elfyflan_suse: as I said I've been using this for months and not seen an issue - and if I had I would have said something16:35
flan_suseelfy: GridCube: what happens if you repeat the steps I described above?16:35
GridCubesorry flan_suse i can not replicate the issue16:35
flan_suseGridCube: So it re-adjusts properly when you repeat the steps?16:36
GridCubeyes16:36
elfyI've not got wireless - but doing anything with the various indicators I get no issue16:36
flan_suseWhat could be the cause?16:36
flan_suseThis is a fresh install (not upgrade) of Xubuntu 14.04 LTS.16:36
elfyflan_suse: you could try removing the panel config in .config/xfce416:41
flan_suseelfy: I'll try. Need to disconnect and rejoin. BRB16:42
flan_suseNope. Removing .config/xfce4/panel made no difference.16:48
elfyflan_suse: really no idea I'm afraid, not seen it here and you're the first one I've heard tell off - perhaps report it - add the image to the bug report16:50
flan_suseHow would I describe it you think?16:51
flan_susexfce4-indicator-plugin glitches when menu height is resized?16:52
flan_suseJust not sure how to concisely word it to make sense.16:52
elfythat's why I suggest adding the screenie - I'd not worry to much about making the report concise - just the title16:53
flan_suseOkay16:54

astojohello, all.  stupid question:  has anyone had any problems customizing their menu with menulibre?17:38
knomeastojo, please be more specific; what exactly+17:39
astojoit seems rather limited, even if i run as root... not as easy to customize my menu as with alacarte in the past.17:39
knomeyou shouldn't run it as root.17:39
knomeastojo, you still haven't told us what it is missing17:40
astojoI only tried root bc with a vanilla, stock install, it would allow me to select the "hide from menus" option.17:41
starratsI accessed the TTY and I got my login but it would not let me login, even though I had the correct login name and password, but yes the TTY worked17:41
astojoevery time i did, and then tried to select something, else, it asked me to save, then never did anything once I did.17:41
knomeastojo, i still don't understand... you do not need to run as root17:41
knomeastojo, try using the save button before you select something else to make sure17:42
knomeastojo, then wait for a while for the menus to see the change and open a menu to see if it's hidden17:42
knomestarrats, are you sure you can't log in from the TTY?17:43
astojostrangely, nothing happens when I click save.  It still asks me to do so once I click other menus, and I agree to at the prompt, and still, no change.17:44
knomeastojo, no change in what menulibre shows or the actual menu?17:44
astojothe actual menu.17:44
knomeastojo, which xubuntu version are you running?17:45
starratswell my login name is my real name and my password is correct and it asked me 3 times to login17:46
astojotrusty.  vanilla install, basically, except I added full libreoffice and run compton to stop screen tearing.17:46
knomeastojo, can you run menulibre form the terminal and see if it gives you any output when you are trying to save the items?17:47
starratsknome my loging name is what I see at startup correct?17:47
starratswhen i put my password in17:48
knomestarrats, no... your login is the "username" part in  /home/username/17:48

knomeastojo, alacarte should work as it has worked so far.18:12
knomeastojo, though if menulibre does unexpected things, would be helpful if you could file bugs against it18:12
astojoperfect.  thank you for your help.  i appreciate it.18:12
knomeastojo, no problem18:13
astojoi'm thinking the wacky things are related to me trying to run is as root upon first difficulties, but i certainly can, and did when it crashed.18:13
knomeastojo, removing the files i told you should have fixed all issues related to running root, but yeah.. you can always run menulibre from the terminal and see if it still throws permission denied -errors18:14
astojoit stopped throwing them after i did that, but then started "gtk-CRITICAL: gtk_tree_model_get_iter: assertion 'path->depth > 0 failed"18:15
astojo... which doesn't sound like a show stopper.  feel like i've seen that before.18:16
knomeastojo, dunno. file a bug :)18:16

starratsah ok I will continue working on it on my end, hoping that it will go away18:23
starratsI never got a previous version of xubuntu working when setting up a dual boot18:23
knomestarrats, right, then i guess you could try the nomodeset option18:24
knome!nomodeset18:24
ubottuA common kernel (boot)parameter is nomodeset, which is needed for some graphic cards that otherwise boot into a black screen or show corrupted splash screen. See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132 on how to use this parameter18:24
starratsI will try that knome18:36

nhojknome, sorry, not exclusive, he is having trouble with ubuntu I think as xfce4 is installed so I thought he might get some more help there as well.21:52
dooglusthey sent me here...21:53
dooglus#ubuntu is for unity support really21:53
knomei haven't seen a specific error that we can help with, yet21:53
knome"keeps crashing" isn't helpful21:53
knomeand what is "the config panel"?21:53
knomeand how does it "not work"?21:54
nhoj:) good!  How are we doing? The indicator plugin or the nm-applet seems to be the problem21:54
dooglussorry - there's a real shortage of cell towers in this country21:55
dooglusI keep losing service21:55
nhojknome, I think I will leave dooglus and the network/panel alone.  Tracked some issues but don't know how to proceed.21:56
dooglusby the "config panel" I meant what I see when I right-click an indicator plugin icon and select "properties"21:57
dooglussometimes when I do that, I see the properties window for half a second, and then "Plugin "Indicator Plugin" unexpectedly left the panel, do you want to restart it?", "The plugin restarted more than once in the last 60 seconds. If you press Execute the panel will try to restart the plugin otherwise it will be permanently removed from the panel."21:57
doogluswith options to 'execute' or 'remove'21:57
nhojdooglus, I am not able to continue at this time.21:58
dooglusother times the properties panel stays up, and I can check and uncheck boxes to hide and show elements - but that does nothing.  other times I can try to check and uncheck the boxes, but they won't change21:58
dooglusok21:58
dooglusif I killall xfce4-panel then run it in a terminal, I see a lot of output like:22:03
dooglusinit: indicator-messages main process ended, respawning22:03
dooglusinit: indicator-bluetooth main process ended, respawning22:03
dooglusinit: indicator-power main process ended, respawning22:03
dooglusas does this guy: https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/xubuntu-devel/2014-April/009971.html22:04
dooglusand the issue with the checkboxes not working seems to be point 6 here: https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/xubuntu-devel/2014-April/009968.html22:05
pandragonWill inkscape 0.48.4 run in Xubuntu 12.04? The repository only has -3 and it won't compile, various errors. The trunk version launch with ' internal error'. TIA!22:41
knomepandragon, have you tried https://launchpad.net/~inkscape.dev/+archive/stable ?22:51
pandragonyes, could not find file, the Precise version I think22:52
knomeyou "think"?22:52
Unit193It's there.22:54
pandragonI am trying again. Let you know shortly23:02
enmareiFor the third time now my computer spontaneously turned off. Thoughts?23:07
Unit193enmarei: Check logs in /var/log/, and just to make sure I'd dust out the computer.23:08
pandragonThat ppa apears to be inkscape-trunk which on launch gives 'internal error.'23:10
knomepandragon, what happens with the stable PPA?23:10
pandragonThe stable ppa is -323:11
knomesays "0.48.4" to me23:11
pandragonHow are you getting that?23:12
knomelooking at https://launchpad.net/~inkscape.dev/+archive/stable23:12
pandragonAs far as I can tell ppa:inkscape.dev/stable loads trunk-gtk3 which also give an 'internal error' on launch23:23
peyamHi23:30
peyamAll I see when IO resume from suspend is a black screen23:30
peyamIS it a known bugg?23:30
Unit193Yes.23:32
peyamwhat to do then?23:32
Unit193Restart Lightdm from a TTY.23:32
pandragonknome, I don't think I have gtk3 installed, version appears to be 2.24.10-Oubuntu6.123:33
peyamUnit193, should I do it everytime?23:34
peyamUnit193, " sudo lightdm start" it is right?23:34
pandragonCorrection I do have libgtk-3-0 version 3.4.2-Oubuntu0.823:35
Unit193No, and I don't have the bug number in front of me nor have I been tracking it, so that's just what I did the one time it happened.23:35
peyamyes. since 13.10 u had gtk3 i believe23:35
knomepandragon, and you sure you are running the version from the PPA?23:36
peyamUnit193, so do I need to google it now or ur solution works?23:36
pandragonOnly place I got it from.23:36
Unit193One of the first results: bug #130711423:36
ubottubug 1303736 in xfce4-power-manager (Ubuntu) "duplicate for #1307114 Black screen after login from suspend in Xubuntu 14.04" [High,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/130373623:36
knomepandragon, anything else on the terminal when you try to run it?23:37
pandragonJust the internal error msg23:37
peyamUnit193, many solutions.. too time consuming for me and im not totally positive they will work. updating the kernel can be a good idea you think?23:41
Unit193It's a good idea to run updates from a security standpoint, but that won't help this at all.23:41
peyamhmm23:42
peyamUnit193, but since you restart the lightdm, have you had problems ?23:43
peyamUnit193, what about using a an other driver than the open source one for the graphics23:49
Unit193peyam: Stop randomly guessing, either read the bug report or don't.23:49
peyamUnit193, nothing useful there23:50
peyamI leave23:50
