beihi, i seem to have a problem; before logging in i was checking out the universal access switches and turned on zooming. once i did that the screen went black although i can usually see and move the mouse. Restarting (my usual fix-all) hasn't fixed or reset anything. is there some way to start in a safe mode to turn zoom off? or is there another better option?03:30
A-Ubuntu-Usergreetings. anyone know how to reset gnome in ubuntu 14?05:05
beioh, i would love an answer to that too!05:09
A-Ubuntu-Userwell, there's a site i found that let's you reset it. but my problem is really weird.05:09
A-Ubuntu-Userhere's the line if you just want to reset things.05:10
A-Ubuntu-Userhttp://askubuntu.com/questions/378769/gnome-shell-installation-problems-in-ubuntu-13-1005:10
A-Ubuntu-Useryou'll have to follow the instructions at the very bottom of the webpage too, or it won't work.05:10
A-Ubuntu-Userso, anyone know the sid for the gnome gdm?05:11
beithanks, i will check that out... i hope someone can help05:15
dreinullWhoever is listening, the ubuntu gnome edition is really great. Totally appreciated.08:54
dreinullI have not used a linux distro more satisfying before.08:55
dreinullbtw. I used the lubuntu installer and then updated to gnome-.desktop because my dvd-drive doesn't read dvds anymore, only cds08:56
dreinullthis has probably been discussed before but since there is nothing online about it, how do I install 3.12?08:56

SammyMouse_hello! I am having some ubuntu gnome issues and I was wondering if anyone can give me a hand14:01
SammyMouse_anyone around?14:04
holsteinSammyMouse_: ?14:06
holsteinSammyMouse_: you just ask, and a volunteer may help14:07
SammyMouse_ah, I am having two problems, first off: for the life of me I can not get extensions to work. I go to https://extensions.gnome.org/ select one, it asks if I want to install it, I click yes...and nothing happens14:08
SammyMouse_any ideas?14:10
stratus_ssanyone about this fine day?14:13
stratus_ssI am wondering if it is safe to remove gnome documents...i.e. does it break meta packages?14:13
SammyMouse_some people are around...14:21
stratus_ssaround but silent :D14:23
stratus_ssi moved from Arch to Ubuntu Gnome 14.0414:23
stratus_ssI am trying to use a Recently Used Files extension, but it insists on opening stuff in gnome documents14:23
stratus_sswhich is super annoying14:23
stratus_ssbecause you know... i actually want to edit the stuff14:24
SammyMouse_I moved from Elementary OS to Ubuntu Gnome....and I still cant bloody get extension,to work...14:24
SammyMouse_I wish there was a way to just manually download the Zip  files from https://extensions.gnome.org/...14:25
stratus_ssya some of my extensions i had to go to github14:25
stratus_sswhat ones are you having problems with14:25
SammyMouse_all of them...14:26
SammyMouse_like...none of them work, I am trying to get a weather one and more so one that allows me to tweak hot corners14:27
majoddoes anyone else have problems with fglrx drivers?14:29
majodi cant get them working, was wondering if that could be this specific distro issue because looks like they work just fine in ubuntu14:30
stratus_ssSammy --> i really havent had problems with extensions working14:31
stratus_sssammy --> they seem to do what they are supposed to14:31
stratus_ssmajod --> I avoid ATI/AMD based video cards... I have never had a good time with them14:32
majodi did have good time with them last 15 years on windows.14:32
stratus_ssdidnt matter the OS it hasnt been a good time for me14:34
SammyMouse_also....I am having trouble with the Dark theme14:42
SammyMouse_anyone know how to get it to work on the menu of other applications? IE firefox, IRC client, MUD client, Office14:43
SammyMouse_anyone?14:45
stratus_sssome of those have to be themed specifically14:49
stratus_ssthere are guides about how to theme firefox etc14:49
SammyMouse_the older OS I used, when I applied a theme, it effected everything14:52
stratus_ssya i am only vaguely familar to be honest. Some of the podcasts I listen to have talked about it14:53
stratus_ssspecifically firefox14:53
stratus_ssbut since i dont really do that, i never really paid attention14:53
majodanyone using fglrx drivers? im suspecting theyre not working with gnome shell?17:07
sysrootmajod, they're running fine here17:18
sysrootubuntu 14.04 + fglrx17:18
sysrootand gnome-shell17:18
majodsysroot: thanks, just wanted to be sure17:18
majodmine suck.17:19
sysrootokay, you're welcome17:19
sysrootin ubuntu they're running fine17:19
sysrootbut in Fedora, GNOME is not working after the fglrx installation17:19
majodi cant get them working in ubuntu gnome17:19
majodnot sure what to do17:19
Foragemajod: bit hard to say anything about it if you don't tell us what the problem is17:25
majodForage: sorry, didnt actually expect anyone to help. i tried 4 forums already without any help, but heres my short story: http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?99386-How-to-get-Catalyst-14-4-working-on-Ubuntu-14-0417:26
majodbtw already figured out the hw acceleration so thats not an issue anymore17:28
Foragemajod: I'm surprised you got the drivers from amd running on 14.04 in the first place17:28
Forage14.04 is not supported yet17:28
majodthere are tons of catalyst benchmarks on phoronix on trusty so i guess it should be working17:29
Forageand if the open source driver are "awesome", why bother to install amd's in the first place?17:29
majodbecause i explained in the post. i want them for gaming17:29
majodtheyre awesome in desktop17:29
sysrootmajod, did you tried installing the fglrx package from the Ubuntu's repositories?17:30
sysrooti installed them and it's just working fine17:30
Foragewhy did the fglrx drivers from ubuntu's repos suck?17:30
Foragethose are working fine for me as well17:30
majodthe same reason as the new one17:30
sysrootrene@sysroot:~$ dpkg -l | grep fglrx17:30
sysrootii  fglrx                                                 2:13.350.1-0ubuntu2                                 amd64        Video driver for the AMD graphics accelerators17:30
sysrootii  fglrx-amdcccle                                        2:13.350.1-0ubuntu2                                 amd64        Catalyst Control Center for the AMD graphics accelerators17:30
sysrootii  fglrx-pxpress                                         1:0.2.91.4                                          amd64        transitional package for ubuntu-drivers-common17:30
ForageI'm waiting for 14.04 support before using amd's fglrx again17:31
majodi installed them from "additional drivers" and did the same thing as 14.4 beta17:31
sysrootForage, for me they're working fine too17:31
sysrooti am using a hybrid graphics stack17:31
sysrootand everything seems fine17:31
majodis there anything i can debug/look at?17:31
majodto see what the problem is17:32
Foragemajod: the problem with which drivers? from amd's website or ubuntu's repos?17:34
majodboth17:34
majodneither of them works so...17:34
majodi really have no idea what could go wrong...i installed the OS and the first thing was installing the fglrx17:35
Foragemajod: so the issues are the same with both drivers?17:36
majodyes, same issues with both17:36
majodmaybe i can try reinstalling the os but im afraid thats just waste of time again17:39
Foragethe glitches and tearing sound like problems I had in the past as well. The only thing that fixed it was waiting for AMD to fix their driver. I suspect your card isn't properly supported yet17:39
majodwell 7850 has its years...17:40
Forageyeah, unlike GNOME 3.1217:41
majod?17:41
ForageAMD's drivers often break with gnome updates17:41
majodoh.17:42
ForageI guess we are lucky with our cards and you aren't. Sorry I can't be more helpful, but based on the issues you describe it sounds like you will have to wait17:43
majodthank you anyway17:43
Foragethe HW acceleration issue might be because you haven't installed xvba-va-driver17:44
majodyes, exactly that17:44
sysrootmajod, just to know, what's your graphic card model?17:44
majodsysroot: sapphire 785017:45
majod2GB17:45
sysrootmine17:45
sysrootAdvanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Thames [Radeon HD 7550M/7570M/7650M]17:45
sysrootForage, and yours?17:46
majodwell, idk. i guess i only have to wait for miracle in open source drivers...17:46
ForageHD695017:46
Foragemajod: don't expect changes for the opensource drivers before 14.1017:47
majodi added oibaf ppa so i have daily updates17:47
majodand updated kernel to 3.1417:47
Forageok17:47
ForageAMD supporting new ubuntu releases often takes at least 2-3 months, but fixes for gnome shell could take more then a year (based on past experience)17:49
majodi will keep trying new versions of catalyst17:49
majodits painful to always revert back to 3.13 kernel, but worth trying :)17:49
Foragedo make sure you properly remove the drivers when switching back to the open source drivers17:50
Forageotherwise you might get issues there as well17:50
majodtoo bad gpu drivers are still so bad on linux17:51
majodi think thats the biggest issue on linux desktops usually17:51
Foragethey have made a lot of progress in the last 1-2 year, closed as well as open source17:52
Forageat least speed-wise, not feature-wise unfortunately17:52
Foragevalve is a big motivation as well17:53
majodyeah i read a lot before migrating to linux so i was really hoping for the best...well its not so bad with open source drivers, but the game performance is sometimes much much worse than i used to have on windows...17:53
ForageAn issue I raised yesterday as well:18:12
ForageI'm a bit confused about the staging ppa. Should the other 2 ppa's be enabled as well when using staging with 14.04?18:12
ForageI enabled all 3 ppa's and installed all updates. Tracker, however, was having some issues and because of it I noticed I've got 0.16 as well as 1.0 installed now. The former available in the stable ppa, the latter available in the staging ppa.18:12
Forageshould the 0.16 version be deleted or can and should they coexist?18:12
stratus_sstracker changed its naming convention i believe18:22
stratus_ssthe problem is that there was problems with their naming that caused issues with package deps18:23
stratus_ssso it could very well remove things you didnt intend if you move one version or the other18:24
Foragestratus_ss: ok, removed all 0.16 packages18:46
Foragestratus_ss: no other packages complained about depending on them18:47
stratus_sswhat packages did you install from which repo?18:48
ForageI didn't install any specific packages, I updated from 13.10 to 14.04 which gave me tracker 0.16, with the staging ppa 1.0 was added18:49
stratus_ssstaging (which is the 3.11/3.12) has the tracker 1.018:49
stratus_ssthe gnome 3 stable ppa has the apps that depend on  0.16.418:49
stratus_ssya so there is a possibility that functionality may be missing18:50
stratus_ssin some18:50
stratus_ssso for exaple (i am just going off the top of my head)18:50
stratus_ssif you had bijiben 3.10 and it has a build dep of tracker 0.16.4, it wont necessarily rip out bijiben18:51
stratus_ssbut bijiben may have some missing functionality18:51
Foragerats18:51
stratus_ssdarkxst knows this stuff a lot better than i do18:51
stratus_ssI have only been working with him since december18:51
stratus_ssso I am still super green18:51
Forageluckily I don't have bijiben, but I'll check on the other stable packages18:52
stratus_ssif you are curious at all, you can do an apt-get source <package name>18:53
stratus_ssthen you look in the debian/control (or control.in) file18:53
stratus_ssthis will tell you package dependencies and versions (if there is a specific version required18:53
Forageon tracker or packages possibly using tracker?18:53
stratus_sspackages possibly using tracker18:54
Foragegnome-system-monitor is the only trusty package in stable not in staging18:55
stratus_ssits quite possible that you will be fine then18:56
Foragebut that doesn't mean there aren't any packages in the other repositories that require 0.16 of course...18:56
stratus_ssdont take my word as gospel truth though18:56
stratus_ssi just help out with the packaging18:56
stratus_ssin the gnome3 ppa18:56
Foragethe staging ppa description should need an update18:57
Forage"To use this PPA, you should enable the main GNOME3 PPA and gnome3-next PPA (Saucy only) too."18:57
stratus_ssya Tim is really busy18:57
Foragebut that line is from before trusty, so you can't tell if it applies to trusty or not18:57
stratus_ssyou can file a bug if you like18:57
stratus_ssya i understand your meaning :)18:58
stratus_ssi mean file a bug to get the ppa changed18:58
Forageyeah18:59
stratus_ssI dont think i have rights to change that18:59
ForageI don't have an option to file a bug in the ppa bugs section18:59
ForageI always get lost in launchpad :-S19:00
stratus_ssya i am not super awsome at it... i actually always navigate from my 'home' screen19:01
Forageis contacting the team's admin acceptable?19:01
stratus_ssI dont know why not (though I am not the the official voice :) )19:01
Foragedone19:05
