maps|wrktired now ugh00:20
maps|wrkand spilt my drink somehow ;[[00:20
maps|wrkhow much memory has your windows machine got to be able to run all those vms daftykins00:20
daftykinsall two? :)00:21
daftykinswell fun fact there, the web server has 256MB and this has 128MB00:21
daftykinsfile server has 4GB00:21
maps|wrkoh00:27
maps|wrki just assumed mored00:27
daftykinssoftware was a lot simpler back on that version i think00:27
daftykinseven a 32-bit server VM i installed of 14.04 seemed to consume a lot of RAM at first boot00:27
Azelphurdaftykins: I ran a webserver on a machine with 32MB RAM00:27
daftykinsminimal might sort that out though00:27
Azelphur:P00:28
daftykins:D external? what kinda timeframe?00:28
Azelphurthis was in ~2008, maybe before.00:28
maps|wrkwhat dist was that00:30
shaunoI still have a mailserver consuming almost nothing00:30
maps|wrkrunning what shauno  dist and all00:31
shaunopostfix on debian wheezy00:31
shaunotends to sit around 10Mb in 8 processes00:31
penguin42yeh my bytemark box is just my mailserver00:31
penguin42lets see, it's saying 480M used, of which 277MB cached, 70MB buffers, so I guess that's about 140MB processes00:32
penguin42ov which about 100MB is spamd00:32
Azelphurmaps|wrk: debian :)00:33
daftykinsshauno: O_O00:34
daftykins             total       used       free     shared    buffers     cached00:34
daftykinsMem:          1002        746        256          0        136        40100:34
daftykinsthat's my hungry hungry hippo VPS00:35
daftykinsseem sane?00:35
penguin42sheesh, 1GB of RAM00:36
shauno             total       used       free     shared    buffers     cached00:39
shaunoMem:           128        126          1          0          0        12300:39
shauno126 used with 123 caches means kernel, postfix & sshd (all that box runs) take up 3Mb atm00:39
shauno(literally all it runs.  no syslog, no cron, no 'consolekit', etc)00:40
penguin42unusual to show the full 128 in the 'total' if that's really the total amount of ram00:40
penguin42on all the machines I've got the total is a bit less than the total00:40
penguin42after the kernel and the bios have taken a chunk00:41
shaunoI have a feeling it's a container, it's a super-cheap ($15/yr) vps00:41
penguin42nod00:42
shaunoit does the trick though.  it's just store & forward as a second mx so I've a bit more breathing space breaking the main host00:43
shauno(hence the el-cheapo - it doesn't feel like overkill when it's 75p / month)00:45
penguin42yeh I don't think that would cut it for the anount of spam that I have to discard00:45
daftykinspenguin42: that's the bigv ja00:46
penguin42in fact, I think I did used to have 128MB before bytemark increased there limits and I used to get exim running out of memory00:46
daftykinsdoes mine look a bit terrible given it runs 2 wordpress' (only one 'active') and 2 static sites?00:47
daftykinsamusingly despite some earlier convo i am actually using bytemark's 'symbiosis' management jazz on it XD00:48
shaunospamd doesn't run on the second host, it just passes mail back to the primary & allthe clever runs there00:48
shaunoit just means I don't get the naggy emails when, eg, the debian mail lists are quite anal about bounces00:49
penguin42so what does the 2nd host do?00:50
maps|wrkwhats the host that u opass it to run00:50
shaunoaccepts mail and requeues it to send to the primary.  it runs as a lower priority than the primary, so mail should only go there when the primary isn't accepting (spammers don't obey this  heh)00:51
daftykinsthis 'meet the new google maps' message is soooo old00:51
daftykinsi clear my browser cache all the time so please stop telling me!00:51
shaunoso when the primary is down, the queue builds up on the secondary.  and then when the secondary comes back it all pushes through00:51
shaunoit just stops the sending server sending "undeliverable but I'll keep trying" bounces00:52
penguin42shauno: Do you do anything clever about validating the adresses on the 2ndary to stop them bouncing when the primary comes back?00:52
shaunonope :/  it'd be neat but I have no idea how00:53
maps|wrkwhat do you run on your mail hosts00:54
shaunoone's on lucid, the little one's on debian.  both postfix, with dovecot, spamd and dkim on the primary00:55
maps|wrknot sure what dkim is :D off to google00:56
maps|wrkno clamav or spamassasin?00:56
shaunospamd is spamassassin00:57
penguin42shauno: Yeh some people get a bit annoyed if the secondary were to bounce stuff when the primary came back since you get it as a way for the spammers to cause traffic00:57
maps|wrkah sorry00:57
maps|wrkyou tried clamav?00:57
* penguin42 runs spamassassin and crm114 - but no av00:58
shaunoI don't have much use for clamav00:59
maps|wrki just always see people mention it01:00
shaunoright, "I" being the important bit there.  I don't have users, windows, etc01:00
daftykinsi always thought running your own mail could be a serious headache? when new to it01:02
penguin42it is when it breaks01:03
daftykinshehehe01:03
penguin42especially when you do it for your family etc01:03
shaunoit is a headache  heh01:03
daftykinsi was giving someone assistance with web server stuff, he kept trying to get me to help setup his own mail - i kept resisting and said just pay the fee for google apps01:03
daftykinshe eventually gave in01:03
daftykinsonly one address, i'd rather that and £33/yr than the headache of self hosting01:04
daftykinsespecially as his system died the other day...01:04
shaunoI host my own mail, dns, jabber, etc.  it's my pennance for being 90% apple at home (and helps stop me completely forgetting how computers work)01:04
penguin42DNS I use bytemarks01:05
daftykinshehehe01:05
penguin42they have a system for pushing DNS entries into their servers01:05
daftykinsmy provider handle DNS for free for .gg and .je domains thankfully01:05
daftykins*handles01:06
maps|wrkThe RewriteBase directive specifies the URL prefix to be used for per-directory (htaccess) RewriteRule directives that substitute a relative path.01:06
daftykinsgiven they cost 4 x that of a .co.uk it's the least they can do =|01:06
penguin42daftykins: It's obviously because they have to hand carry the DNS definitions to the mainland and so the extra cost is to pay for the ferry01:07
daftykinspenguin42: :D01:07
maps|wrkdoes that basically mean the specified prefix will be used in case of /dir/dir01:07
daftykinsany ideas what's stopping more than one single company being the one in control though?01:08
daftykinshttp://www.channelisles.net/01:08
daftykinsthis is the monopolistic bunch of *ahem*01:08
daftykinshttp://www.channelisles.net/register-domains/prices/01:08
penguin42the co.gg isn't quite as bad01:12
penguin42(and is quite nice)01:12

shaunonot sure I get what you're asking01:42
maps|wrkso http://ip/~user becomes http://ip/user01:43
daftykinsyou're actually having to type the tilde into that subfolder?01:46
daftykins*into the address bar to reach that subfolder ?01:46

bigcalmI tried sudo route add -net 192.168.56.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 gw 192.168.1.1018:31
bigcalmThat let me ping 192.168.56.1 (the virtual interface on the server)18:31
bigcalmBut I can't ping the virtual machines such as 192.168.56.818:32
davmor2bigcalm: put in an alias in a file,  let me try and find which one for you18:35

davmor2no worries ;)18:41
diddledandavmor2, inorite, how inconsiderate is that to fix something BEFORE you even get anyone to help?!18:41
bigcalmDid I netsplit or something?18:41
diddledanbigcalm, you should be ashamed of yourself!18:42

diddledanno underscores here18:42
bigcalmOh, it's xchat and irssi proxy being weird!18:42
diddledanergh18:42
bigcalmThat's better18:43
bigcalmI just reconnected to the irssi proxy and the _ went away18:43
davmor2bigcalm: that's because you had to reboot your router ;)18:43

ali1234diddledan: i have a wordpress question18:47
bigcalmUnexpected and also wonderful :)18:47
maps|wrkhewwo18:47
ali1234diddledan: i have some custom tables that i want to behave similar to posts, but i don't want all the custom posts stuff. is it better to replace the custom table with a custom post type, or keep them separate and have logic to keep them sync'd?18:48
diddledanif the data in the table is suitable for a post-type then I would set it to be such and do away with the extra table - it's always best to work within the WP ecosystem if you can. I tend to dislike any extra tables in the DB unless absolutely necessary18:50
ali1234well, these are my custom tables: http://paste.ubuntu.com/7374932/18:51
ali1234i want each round to have it's own page on the site18:51
ali1234so currently when making a new round, i also create a new custom post and store the ID in postID18:52
ali1234so i'm wondering whether to just get rid of that table and store all the data in wp_meta18:52
ali1234thing is, i don't want admin to be able to delete rounds, ever18:55
ali1234or various other things that admin can do with posts, that would break the website18:55
ali1234but i do want to allow comments on rounds, and have automatic archive pages, and other things that you get for free with posts18:56
diddledanhmm, I might be inclined to keep it as a separate set of data then as you've got. If you tie it to a post in the db, however, you can still get the admin removing that post and breaking your linkup, so I'd recommend neutering wordpress for that part of the site so that urls under /rounds/* for e.g. are handled by code you write only18:57
diddledanand don't use the post system at all18:57
diddledanoh, comments18:57
ali1234also this is complicated by the client not really knowing what they want wrt navigation on the site18:57
diddledanyeah that makes it more complicated18:57
ali1234and also we have a whole legacy site, where each entry was a post, rather than each round, and i need to figure out what to do with all that18:58
maps|wrkwrt?18:58
ali1234"with respect to"18:58
maps|wrkah18:58
maps|wrkdoph18:58
maps|wrksorry18:58
ali1234i will probably need some heavy rewrite rules no matter what, because i want /vote to always show the latest round, and vote/1/April to show the round from year 1, called April18:59
ali1234but then i still want the archive pages somewhere - those would normally be under /vote but i want them under vote/archive or something19:01
maps|wrki find rmod_rewrite and regex so hard19:13
maps|wrkneed to find a good tutorial to learn regular expressions;)19:13

maps|wrki use my netbook all the time and i ALWAYS take it on holiday with me ;)20:05
TheProphet[S]Trying to get wifi to work again20:05
daftykinslol, they're glorified calculators20:06
TheProphet[S]Network manager says the device is not managed, if I change the flag in Networks.conf from false to true then it says device not ready20:08
daftykinswhat ubuntu is this? is it a clean install? what's the wireless hardware?20:08
daftykinsi love a challenge at the best of times but you can make it easy for us too ;D20:08
TheProphet[S]Not a clean install, it's 14.04, device is ar928520:09
TheProphet[S]Using ath9k driver20:10
daftykinsafaiui /etc/network/interfaces should have no references to the interface in order to let NM have full control20:10

TheProphet[S]I should add I haven't been able to update for a while due to a problem half way through a massive update20:11
daftykinsi wouldn't have this long hair anymore, it'd be pulled out in frustration ;)20:11
daftykinsTheProphet[S]: got a wired interface to fix that with first? :)20:12
TheProphet[S]daftykins wired interface is not easy to connect, I would need about 20 metres of cable unfortunately20:14
daftykinsno reason you can't fix it up by the router temporarily20:14
daftykinsgo hook it up and run a sudo apt-get -f install :)20:14
daftykinsand pastebin it for us \o/20:15
TheProphet[S]I don't really have a monitor,  just a 42" TV connected to the pc it would take a considerable amount of moving to do that unfortunately. I have noticed though that on that file you mentioned there is a ref to the device and also the ssid and password for the wireless connection20:16
daftykinsoh it's a desktop? nasty20:17
daftykinsah - so network manager isn't being allowed to handle it, it's hard-coded to connect using wpa_supplicant20:17
TheProphet[S]Not a glorified calculator no :-)20:17
daftykinslaptops are not netbooks ;)20:18
daftykinsif your aim is to try using network manager, you'll want to backup that file and replace it with the default20:18
TheProphet[S]I might have messed that up myself cos I was trying to connect with wpa_supplicant a couple of days ago20:18
daftykinsoh, was network manager already not working at that point, so that was an attempt to get it connecting?20:19
TheProphet[S]I couldn't get the ui to start due to that botched update20:19
daftykinsnasty20:19
daftykinssounds like wireless is the least of your problems20:19
TheProphet[S]And was trying to connect from recovery mode20:19
TheProphet[S]I think if I manage to get the Internet working and  run a dist_upgrade apt will find its supercow powers and fix everything20:20
maps|wrkwould it not be possible to download the required files and then move to a usb stick and use on that pc20:20
maps|wrkas hes obviously get net on sopme pc20:20
daftykinsnot really20:21
TheProphet[S]I need to undo the stuff I did with wpa_supplicant20:21
maps|wrkwhy not dafty? you can download the stuff manually20:21
TheProphet[S]If I delete the interfaces file? Or delete references to wlan0 manually?20:22
daftykinsmaps|wrk: how do you know what apt wants to install without a connection to run an update? :D20:23
daftykinsTheProphet[S]: tell you what comment them all out with a # at the start of each line, save and reboot20:23
TheProphet[S]Ok20:23
maps|wrkheh20:23
TheProphet[S]There's a line with lface wlan0 inet dhcp, should I comment the whole line? Or just wlan0 and dhcp?20:25

TheProphet[S]Ok done, sorry about before MartijnVdS, real life knocked on the screen20:28
MartijnVdS:)20:28
MooDooyo!20:28
TheProphet[S]Connected now :-) thanks guys!20:28
maps|wrkso what was it?:)20:29
TheProphet[S]The interfaces file clashing with network manager due to my tinkering with wpa_supplicant20:29
TheProphet[S]Right?20:30
MartijnVdSnetwork-manager stops managing an interface if it sees it in /etc/network/interfaces20:30
MartijnVdSbecause it assumes you know what you're doing in that cae.20:31
diddledanlmao @ https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=hUQ0C8CGHmU20:31
maps|wrkaha20:32
TheProphet[S]Should I run safe, full or dist upgrade now? I use aptitude rather apt usually20:32
TheProphet[S]After the botched upgrade20:33
TheProphet[S]I went for safe20:34
Azelphurhaha, the gnome-screensaver on 14.04 is super broken for multi X screens20:34
Azelphurit doesn't protect anything besides :0.0 any more20:34
maps|wrkno idea, im still on 13.10:D20:35
TheProphet[S]MartijnVdS you said you used a similar wireless chip, did you also add the option nohwcrypt=1?20:37
MartijnVdSano20:37
TheProphet[S]Not sure what it does but it should improve the wireless connection and reduce packet loss apparently20:40
MartijnVdSit makes the CPU do all the encryption20:43
MartijnVdSinstead of the dedicated chip on the wifi card20:43
MartijnVdSI never use that option.. that chip is there for a reason -- to offload crypto workload from the main CPU20:43
TheProphet[S]Wpa_supplicant is crashing now20:43
MartijnVdSdid you edit its config file? maybe it's looking at that instead of the one it's expecting?20:44
TheProphet[S]Yes I did edit wpa_supplicant.conf20:45
TheProphet[S]Actually I removed the file20:47
