p1rohi, how i do restore my bottom bar ?02:21
holsteinp1ro: many ways.. you can just put it back.. or, you can remove the config file for it, and relog or reboot or reload02:22
holsteinhttp://forum.lxde.org/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=94 for example02:22
p1roholstein, thanks for answer, i did mess it up did remove something and now all the programs just list even under clock02:23
p1rook ill check02:23
holsteinp1ro: you can always experiement with the guest account, or a live CD. so you dont break anything in your installed user02:23
p1roholstein, well i get what you mean, but i was not experimenting was a missclick and everything messed lol02:24
p1roill try removing the config and restarting02:24
alkuHi everyone, upgraded to lubuntu 14.04, however network settings does not have 'connections' tab. it is listing 3 tabs only i.e. 'general', 'dns' and 'hosts'. Can anybody help03:18
holsteinalku: what are you trying to do?03:19
alkutrying to see available connections as it was very easy with my older version 13.1003:20
holsteinalku: is the nm-applet running? if not, open a terminal and start it03:20
holsteinnm-applet &03:20
holsteinthen, see if you see connections03:20
alkuholstein: run nm-applet but there is no graphical sign of connectivity. I somehow managed to connect through my cell phone however the network-admin dialogue does not show any activity03:22
alkuholstein: when i plug in my usb modem or when i switch on wi-fi, i can't see available networks as i used to before03:23
holsteinalku: is the nm-applet running? or no?03:23
holstein!wifi03:23
ubottuWireless documentation, including how-to guides and troubleshooting information, can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs03:23
holsteini would just see if my wifi is there at all.. or needs a module03:23
alkuholstein: when i run nm-applet, nothing happens03:24
alkuubottu: thanks, the wifi drivers are installed and working, but there is no display of available wifi networks03:25
ubottualku: I am only a bot, please don't think I'm intelligent :)03:25
holsteinalku: do you have a network applet in the tray?03:25
holsteinalku: why are you saying the drivers are installed and working? if you have no connection?03:26
holsteinalku: the bot link i triggered ubottu to give you lists the troubleshooting specfics im suggesting you do03:26
alkuholstein: yes there is, it opens up connection properties with eth0 and lo connections03:26
holsteinalku: lspci is showing the device or no.. ifconfig is showing the device or no. etc03:26
holsteinalku: thats what i would expect to see if i didnt have the proper wifi drivers installed03:27
holstein!paste03:27
ubottuFor posting multi-line texts into the channel, please use http://paste.ubuntu.com | To post !screenshots use http://imagebin.org/?page=add | !pastebinit to paste directly from command line | Make sure you give us the URL for your paste - see also the channel topic.03:27
holsteinalku: you can pastebin "lspci" and "ifconfig" if you like03:27
alkuholstein: please find result of lsusb and ifconfig on http://paste.ubuntu.com/7384160/03:29
alkuholstein: you can see my huewei modem listed, but i can not find a way to connect to it03:30
holsteinalku: if it were me, i would remove what im not using, and reboot.. wire up and make sure i have all updates availalbe03:30
holsteinso, via wired internet.. "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade"03:31
holsteinif you say "i dont have wired".. then, just do it here, now03:31
holsteinthen, i reboot, having removed "extra" NIC's, and concentrate on the one you want to use.. referencing03:31
holstein!wifi03:31
ubottuWireless documentation, including how-to guides and troubleshooting information, can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs03:31
holsteinyou have wlan0 listed in your list, which makes me thing you are just not using the nm-applet03:32
alkuholstein: already performed sudo apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade yesterday, could not fix. I guess there are some broken packages03:34
alkuholstein: nm-applet does not give any output, nor any error message03:35
holsteinalku: do it again, *now* to make sure, as i suggested, that you have *all* available upgrades03:35
holsteinalku: if you have broken packages, you will get an error about that when running the command i asked you to run.. you can share that error in a pastebin03:36
alkuholstein: its done one more time, can you tell me how to remove 'extra NICs'?03:36
holsteinalku: please run "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade"03:36
holsteinalku: i suggest taking them out of the machine03:36
holsteinalku: unplug, phisically, whatever you are not using03:37
holsteinany USB devices.. easily removable devices you are not using, that are not related to this issue03:37
alkuholstein: i have run 'sudo apt-get update' successfully. query 'sudo apt-get dist-upgrade' gives out finished with 0 upgraded and successful query result03:37
holsteinalku: ok.. so you do *not* have broken packages then, according to the package manager. and you are up to date.03:38
holsteinalku: please move on then03:38
holsteinalku: reboot, remove all extra devices, and refer to..03:39
holstein!wifi03:39
alkuholstein: i will reboot and come back, thanks03:39
alkuholstein: when i run nm-applet it gives a pop-up 'wireless networks available'. However i want to be able to see all available networks (wifi, usb etc) in the network manager graphically03:44
holsteinalku: sure.. are they not in the list, friend?03:44
holsteinalku: there will need to actually be some, for a list to populate03:45
alkuholstein: i am not a good linux user, is there anything i am missing here? i run network-admin and it does not list the 'connections' tab. that's all i understand03:46
holsteinalku: dont run network-admin03:47
* ianorlin tried searching that card and it appears it for connecting to a cell network I don't think that shows up in wifi03:47
holsteinalku: click on the little icon in the tray by the time03:48
holsteinalku: see the wireless access points03:48
alkuholstein: it gives out a pop-up 'connection properties' with tabs 'general' and 'support' with connections 'usb0' and 'lo' only03:49
holsteinalku: i know not what to tell you, friend03:50
holsteinalku: you need to make sure you have driver support.. you say you do, but i dont see anything indicating you have confirmed that03:50
holstein!wifi03:50
ubottuWireless documentation, including how-to guides and troubleshooting information, can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs03:50
holstein^ will help you confirm that03:50
alkuholstein: sorry for too much trouble. thanks anyway03:51
holsteinalku: then, i just see them in the list.. i dont go in the menu.. i dont run any "network admin" i just click on them03:51
holsteinalku: you can try a 14.04 live CD to rmove your installation from the equation.. but, im sure its just a fiddly firmware, or an easy config setting03:51
holsteinalku: the USB0 is not the wifi?03:51
holsteinalku: what is usb0? and what not remove that? at least temporarily?03:52
alkuholstein: usb0 is the connection through my cell phone03:52
holsteinalku: then, disconnect that, and reboot with that *not* connected..03:52
alkuholstein: is there anyway i can connect my huewei modem, there is no graphical interface. any other way to connect. when i connect the dongle it does not list in the panel03:53
holsteinalku: remove *all* extra things from the machine, just to troubleshooti03:53
alkui have removed everything except my cell phone to connect to webchat03:53
holsteinalku: it should.. and im trying to explain to you why i think its not showing up there03:53
holsteinalku: sure.. and you should remove it, as well, and test..03:54
holsteinalku: im proposing, the reason you dont see it there, is that you dont have driver support for the device03:54
holsteinalku: there is no secret button..03:54
alkuholstein: i will try to reboot with everything unplugged. meanwhile i have issue with 'chromium-browser' as well. my keyboard stops working on chromium all of a sudden, all other applications accept keyboard although03:57
alkuholstein: for this reason i am temporarily using 'midori' browser03:57
holsteinalku: not sure why.. could be related.. could have bad hardware causing all these issues, or misconfiguration03:58
holsteini like to test with live CD's03:58
alkuholstein: thanks, i will try with live CD.03:58
ianorlinoh holstein if someone has a problem with chromium browser not taking keyboard they need to quit ibus is the work around if someone else uses it05:05
FakeBoostHello, is the network connections app the same as the network manager??? Because i try to share internet connection with another machine and all over the internet says: open your network manager, but i can't find it.08:38
FakeBoostHow can I share the internet connection via ethernet cable? What's the configuration?08:54
Mr_Cometshare?09:11
FakeBoostYes.09:14
FakeBoostShare the internet, how do i configure it?09:14
FakeBoostMr_Comet?09:14
AscavasaionOkay, loaded a bundle under "Volume", says I have data when I check balances with *141#  Plugged modem in, right clicked the networking icon and chose Edit Connections.  Chose Mobile Broadband, Add, Chose defaults or MTN specific options, changed no fields and saved the connection.  When I right click the network connections MTN connection does not appear as an option.  It is detected with lsusb.  MTN = my Mobile service provid09:15
Ascavasaioner.09:15
Mr_Cometmobile service network needs settings.09:24
Mr_Cometthats the norm.09:24
Mr_Cometi dont think its under broadband. but then im not used to usb modems.09:25
Mr_Cometmake sure access point is not forgotten09:25
Ascavasaionany idea why my Huawei broadband modem will not show up on network manager?  It is on lsusb.  thank you.09:40
comics_ideesif you use dual monitor I suggest you to use  disper, together with disper-indicator, it is good for dual monitor09:51
AscavasaionI presume that is not for me hehehe09:51
comics_ideeshowever disper-indicator cannot be found in ppa repositories so you must download it manually09:52
comics_ideesI lost two days to set disper but now it is ok09:52
chulish10:14
Ascavasaioni10:15
Ascavasaionany idea why my Huawei broadband modem will not show up on network manager?  It is on lsusb.  thank you.10:22
comics_ideesYou try to connect in wireless network?10:25
Ascavasaioncomics_idees: No... broadband10:26
comics_ideesIn wireless network before you connect to a modem you must give your lubuntu user login name and password in a first window, and in a next window you must give the ssd and password. But I do not now about broadband10:27
Ascavasaioncomics_idees: Thank you anyway :)10:28
comics_ideesI tried to connect  to wireless and I did a mistake10:28
AscavasaionCannot believe that this is so difficult.10:28
comics_ideesin the first window I was giving ssid and password but I should give lubuntu user login and password, and wait for a next window10:29
comics_ideesmaybe it is the same in broadband10:29
comics_ideesmy mistake was that I was typing ssid and password instead of lubuntu user name and password10:30
comics_ideesmaybe the same is for broadband10:31
comics_ideesI do not know10:31
comics_ideesjust try this if there is such a window10:32
comics_ideesi hope I made it clear I tried to explain10:33
AscavasaionNo, but thank you.10:35
comics_ideesdont you have a window asking login and password?10:36
comics_ideesbefore you connect?10:36
AscavasaionNope.10:39
Mr_Cometim confused.10:39
comics_ideeshm so what do you see10:39
Mr_Cometbroadband modems usually have their ip 192.168.1.110:39
Mr_Cometor something like that10:39
comics_ideesyes my modem has this10:39
Mr_Cometthen login to that modem and setup settings.10:39
comics_ideesyes from browser you can10:40
Mr_Cometonce log-in details and settings are finished. reboot it.10:40
Mr_Cometif all the lights come on. its connected.10:40
AscavasaionNo, there is something else wrong... seems Modem is being linked to CDROm or something.10:40
comics_ideeshm10:41
Mr_CometAscavasaion-  is your modem usb or Ethernet type?10:41
AscavasaionUSB10:41
Mr_Cometno wonder.10:41
AscavasaionMr_Comet: Broadband modem.10:41
Mr_Cometi can see.10:41
Ascavasaionwith Mobile SIM in it.10:41
comics_ideeshm it is difficult I do not use mobile sim10:41
Mr_Cometcomics_idees-  Ascavasaion is using usb type modem with sim card type.10:42
Mr_CometAscavasaion-  better call your mobile service and ask for login details, settings and access point words.10:42
Mr_CometAscavasaion-  then enter all those details and try10:43
comics_ideesand doesnot appear a window asking login and password? strange10:43
Mr_Comethttp://telecomtalk.info/step-by-step-guide-configuring-usb-modem-ubuntu/101849/10:44
Mr_Cometmaybe that might work?10:44
Mr_Cometrandom google search for method of net setup for usb modem.10:44
AscavasaionMr_Comet: It is all filled in by default.  I have used friend's modems of similar type and they worked out of the box.10:44
Mr_CometAscavasaion-  out of the box on windows?10:44
Mr_Cometplug out ethernet cable. switch off wifi. connect usb broadband and reboot system.10:45
AscavasaionOut of the box on this very machine... Linux.10:45
Mr_Cometi wish i can help you more but i NEVER used usb modems before.10:46
AscavasaionMr_Comet: thank you... I appreciate it.10:46
Mr_Cometaccording to that website link.10:47
Mr_CometMost new Ubuntu versions detect a modem in few seconds. Only if it does not happen follow this procedure. In older Ubuntu versions I had faced the issue where my device was not recognized by Ubuntu network manager. In such situations wvdial can come to rescue. Wvdial package does not come preinstalled and will have to be installed separately (Not sure about just released Ubuntu 12.10 though10:47
AscavasaionMr_Comet: I appreciate you trying to help.  thank you.10:47
Mr_Cometuse wvdial and hope it works manually for you10:48
Mr_Cometyou're welcome10:48
AscavasaionI used to use wvdial for my old dial-up modem... that was loooong ago hehe10:48
Mr_Cometthen its time you use same for this modem too10:48
Mr_Cometif it works. problem solved then10:49
AscavasaionI suppose... does seem cumbersome though when there is a nice user friendly network manager available.10:49
Ascavasaion*sigh*10:49
AscavasaionOh well, yet again Linux is proven to be inferior.10:58
Ascavasaionthank you to all who tried to help.10:58

holsteinmarkveidemanis: you get no graphical environment? but you *do* get boot?15:54
markveidemanisBut the login screen does not show15:54
holsteinmarkveidemanis: sure.. but it *is* booting? correct?15:54
holsteinmarkveidemanis: you are just not getting a GUI?15:54
markveidemanisI guess the system is intact except that15:55
holsteinmarkveidemanis: you guess?... the system is booting correct?15:55
markveidemanisYes, all the files and services run as normal15:55
holsteinmarkveidemanis: anyways, from what i can tell, i would do the following.. in a terminal, run "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" and address any errors and make sure all is well..15:56
markveidemanisOk, running15:56
holsteinthen, i would see that i am indeed on 14.04. i would check "uname -a" and see that i have the kernel i expect, and lsb_release15:56

alkuupdated to lubuntu 14.04, however network manager is missing from the panel. nm-applet gives no result, many users facing same problem17:27
holsteinwhen i run "nm-applet" i get an applet..17:28
holsteinalku: have you tried something like wicd?17:28
alkuholstein: never tried. please tell me about it17:29
alkuI get following when i run nm-applet in the terminal: Couldn't connect to accessibility bus: Failed to connect to socket /tmp/dbus-rNu4H230nQ: Connection refused17:33
holsteinalku: do you have the notification area added to the panel?17:34
alkuholstein: yes, on the right bottom is the icon for 'connection properties'17:35
holsteinalku: that *is* the nm-applet17:35
alkuholstein: there is no scroll-down bar with available networks, moreover the 'connection properties' does not list out all connections. it has tab for lo and eth only17:37
alkuholstein: if i install wicd, do i need to remove any conflicting package?17:38
holsteinsure, but that is not "nm-applet isnt starting"17:41
holsteinalku: i dont use wicd, friend.. its just an alternative i suggested back when you said the nm-applet wasnt running for you, but, it appears that it is17:42

ScepticHello. Who will send me link to default wallpaper in Lubuntu 14.04?17:52
MichaelTunnellis there a place online to view existing bugs like a bugzilla or maybe in launchpad?17:53
krytarikMichaelTunnell: That'd be like: https://bugs.launchpad.net/17:57
cristian_cHi18:00
cristian_cI've purchased a Rii mini i8 bluetooth keyboard18:00
cristian_cHow can i enable the keyboard in lubuntu?18:00
cristian_cAny ideas?18:00
cristian_cI've paired it18:00
krytarikSceptic: You can download it from here, for example: http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/lubuntu-artwork18:01
Sceptickrytarik, TU18:02
ScepticI just installed LXDE over standard 14.04 and now I know that menus could appear just after click, without need of waiting.18:03
MichaelTunnellthat link krytarik is not useful at all...that applies to all bugs in Ubuntu, PPAs and anything else that uses Launchpad...I wanted the specific Lubuntu section18:06
krytarikMichaelTunnell: Well, you didn't ask specific. :P18:07
MichaelTunnellI did ask specifically for Lubuntu...if I wanted all bugs related to Launchpad I would have went to #ubuntu-bugs or #launchpad18:07
krytarik"<MichaelTunnell> is there a place online to view existing bugs like a bugzilla or maybe in launchpad?"18:08
krytarikMichaelTunnell: That's all I've seen from you anyway. :)18:08
ScepticIs it possible to download Lubuntu "look" for LXDE installed over standard 14.04?18:09
MichaelTunnellI am in #lubuntu for a reason...why would I asked about Ubuntu or any Launchpad bug in Lubuntu?18:09
holsteinlubuntu *is* ubuntu18:09
holsteinyou can search there for whatever you like.. lubuntu related18:09
MichaelTunnellthough to be fair I suppose people would ask random crap here so my mistake to assume18:09
MichaelTunnellSceptic: yes18:09
MichaelTunnelllubuntu-desktop18:09
MichaelTunnellyou can also just install lxde but lubuntu-desktop is the better option18:10
MichaelTunnellholstein: yes and no18:10
MichaelTunnellwith the is ubuntu part...for example lxpanel has absolutely nothing to do with Ubuntu proper18:10
holsteinMichaelTunnell: its actually just yes.. there is no seperate place for bugs.. though, you can join the specific lubuntu dev email list or whatever you like18:11
holsteinlxpanel is in the default repos18:11
ScepticMichaelTunnell, sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop ?18:12
MichaelTunnelllaunchpad is a mess for bug management regardless of Ubuntu or deriviatives or PPAs or anything else...Lubuntu should really have a separate place for bugs because even finding the bug page to see that it is on launchpad is a massive pain18:12
MichaelTunnellSceptic: indeed18:12
holsteinMichaelTunnell: ppa's are not officialy supported18:12
MichaelTunnellI know that holstein which is why having them managed in the same places as official pages is confusing and broken18:13
holsteinthough, one can file a bug on LP for anything18:13
MichaelTunnellofficial packages*18:13
MichaelTunnellholstein: exactly the problem18:13
holsteinMichaelTunnell: they are official packages, though..18:13
holsteini mean, its a lot of activity.. and it can be a mess, but that *is* where the action is18:14
MichaelTunnellPPAs are not official packages thus being included with official packages doesn't make sense18:14
MichaelTunnellSceptic: do NOT remove ubuntu-desktop though...just add lubuntu as well as Ubuntu depends on ubuntu-desktop for a lot of stuff unrelated to unity18:14
MichaelTunnellholstein: double edged sword I guess then18:14
ScepticMichaelTunnell, it's an important advice ;)18:15
MichaelTunnellSceptic: indeed :)18:15
holsteinppa packages are not included in the official packages.. im just saying, if one wants, one can start a bug stating "such and such ppa does this in lubuntu", but that is not officially supported and likely to be dismissed18:15
MichaelTunnelldont go Laporte-ing it up:)18:15
holsteinthis contributes to the sloppiness, but also the open-ness.. anyone can file any bug they want. and lubuntu doesnt have a seperate system18:16
MichaelTunnellholstein: they are included in launchpad...the distinction is irrelevant if they website...interface...experience is the same18:16
holsteinthe team is quite small, and takes advantage of upstream, as well as following guidelines18:16
MichaelTunnellbut I am being nitpicky I know18:16
holsteinbe what you like.. nitpicky or not, LP is where bugs are filed18:17
holsteinthere is no lubuntu specific channel or avenue.. and, to be officially part of ubuntu, im not sure that one would be able to be facilitated18:17
MichaelTunnellbut Lubuntu can still do that with separated bugs...they can see "well this is not Lubuntu specific" so they forward that bug to Ubuntu itself...slightly more work but not confusing at all to the end user...I would bet Lubuntu would get 10x more bug reports and be able to fix stuff if the bug reporting wasn't so jacked up18:17
holsteinMichaelTunnell: its a small team, friend, but you are welcome to do what you like18:18
MichaelTunnellI am welcome to do what I like? I don't understand that comment...it is not like I can make a bug system for them to use or anything like that. I mean I could but they would have to use it.18:19
holsteinMichaelTunnell: sure.. and im saying, "they" may not be allowed to use it..18:19
MichaelTunnellallowed...ouch18:19
MichaelTunnellgotcha18:19
holsteinand maintain official ubuntu spin status18:19
MichaelTunnellwell that is interesting barrier18:19
MichaelTunnellI understand18:20
MichaelTunnellwell do you know what the package name is for the Language Selector Icon in lxpanel is?18:20

MichaelTunnellI am not actually in Lubuntu right now which is why I was asking in here18:25

holstein_joey: maybe come back when you are not so furstrated. otherwise, use any mint installation CD18:57
_joeythe menu on the panel jumps around the place18:57
holstein!Mint18:57
ubottuLinux Mint is not a supported derivative of Ubuntu. Please seek support in #linuxmint-help on irc.spotchat.org18:57
comics_ideesI think that it opens slowly in boot18:57
comics_ideesand I click browser and it does not open immediately18:57
SilverLioncomics_idees: can't confirm that18:57
_joeyholstein: instead of giving some useful tips about the issue of technical nature, you are just trolling18:57
comics_ideeswhen I click browser after reboot, I wait before it starts18:58
SilverLion_joey: ok let's get serious. what are you expecting of us?18:58
holstein_joey: feel free and ask a support question.. if you are asking how to install mint, i gave you specifics of that technical nature18:58
_joeyI did18:58
holstein_joey: i mean no harm.. and understand your furstrated18:58
_joeyI didn't ask about install mint18:58
_joeyI asked about upgrading from Lubuntu18:58
holstein14:56 < _joey> is it possible to upgrade to ubuntu or mint an easy way?18:59
holstein^18:59
_joeyyes, idiot18:59
_joeythat's what I asked18:59
comics_ideesjoey why dont you make a bootable flash or a bootable cd?18:59
holstein_joey: you ask in a mint support channel.. or just get a mint installation iso.. this is not mint support, friend18:59
holstein!volunteers | _joey18:59
ubottu_joey: The guidelines for using the Ubuntu channels can be found here: http://wiki.ubuntu.com/IRC/Guidelines18:59
_joeycomics_idees: the problem is i have a lot of software installed and configured19:00
holstein_joey: i will appreciate you not referring to me, or anyone else as "idiot".. thanksyou19:00
holstein_joey: do you have any PPA's added? those can introduce instability19:00
_joeythen don't be one19:00
holstein_joey: any PPA's?19:00
_joeywhat's PPA?19:00
holstein!ppa19:00
ubottuA Personal Package Archive (PPA) can provide alternate software not normally available in the offical Ubuntu repositories - Looking for a PPA? See https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+ppas - WARNING: PPAs are unsupported third-party packages, and you use them at your own risk. See also !addppa and !ppa-purge19:00
comics_ideesI have many ppa's added19:01
holsteincomics_idees: those can intoduce system wide instability, in some cases19:01
_joeyI may19:01
comics_ideesi have added from noobslabs19:01
_joeyhow do I check that out?19:01
holstein_joey: you "may" want to confirm that, since they can cause the issues you state19:01
_joeyidiot, i just asked how do i check if i have them?19:02
_joeyholstein: I will refer to you as one until you become reasonable19:02
SilverLion_joey: stop it right there19:02
holstein_joey: please refrain.. i am a volunteer and dont apprieciate your name-calling,, its not constructive or necessary19:02
_joeyokay19:03
holsteinyou can always just run "sudo apt-get update" and look at the output there19:03
holstein!sources19:03
ubottuThe packages in Ubuntu are divided into several sections. More information at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories - See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RecommendedSources for the recommended way to set up your repositories.19:03
comics_ideesthe word idiot is greek and it is the opposite of democrat,  the democrat is considered clever and the idiot is considered not clever he looks his own business and not public19:03
holstein_joey: http://askubuntu.com/questions/4983/what-are-ppas-and-how-do-i-use-them19:04
comics_ideesin greece the private sector is called idiot sector19:06
comics_ideesthis is the real root of this word idiot=private19:07
_joeythere are not ppa's in sources.list on my system19:07
_joeyit's a workaround. the problem will be fixed i upgrade to better supported system19:08
holsteini'll also load up a live CD to remove my installed OS from the equation, and try testing as the guest user, or another user.. this can test my user's configuration19:08
holstein_joey: there are linux-wide hardware support issue that can be problematic based on certain hardware..19:09
_joeyit's hardware issue19:09
_joeyit's poor support issue19:09
holsteinbut, you are welcome and encouraged to try what os you like.. AFAIK, mint provides live CD's you can try19:09
_joey_not_19:09
holstein_joey: sure.. most major linux distos provide a live CD.. you are welcome and encouraged to utilize them and confirme that19:10
_joeyI am not sure if Mint sucks as much as Lubuntu in terms of support19:10
comics_ideesis there an old version of google earth .deb for lubuntu to run for older graphics cards?19:10
holstein_joey: they areboth communities.. you are welcome to get involved and make the level of support what you choose19:10
holstein_joey: if you are looking for more of a tech-support kind of relationship, you can look at commercial avenues, such as system7619:11
holstein_joey: this is not tech support.. its community support.. there are only volunteers here..19:11
comics_ideeswhat is system7619:11
holstein_joey: so is mint.. community supported..19:12
holsteincomics_idees: commercial hardware vendor that provides linux/ubuntu and support..19:12
comics_ideesI wish to find an old version of google earth .deb package because latest version does not supports my graphics card. Which version should I use?19:13
holsteincomics_idees: you'd have to ask them.. but i would just start stepping back through them19:13
comics_ideesok I try to ask forums of google earth19:14
SilverLionholstein: ping19:24
holsteinSilverLion: yo19:28

Kreugerhey guys, i have a question about a live cd23:35
SonikkuAmerica!ask23:38
ubottuPlease don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-) See also !patience23:38
KreugerI have an installation that I can't get to login. Im wondering if I could use a live cd to create a new user to login wit23:39
holsteinKreuger: test this..23:40
holstein!tty23:40
ubottuTo get to the TTY terminals 1-6, use the keystroke ctrl + alt + F1-F6 respectively (Alt+F7 will get you back to your graphical login).  To change the resolution for your TTY, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ChangeTTYResolution23:40
holsteinKreuger: ^ and try and login there.. as your user.. then, try the guest account and see if you can get to the desktop23:40
KreugerI can't it to give me a terminal23:40
holsteinKreuger: if you can get to the guest account desktop, and you can login via TTY, then, your issue is in the users config.. if you cant login as user in tty, and you cant get to the guest account desktop, it could be a larger system issue23:41
holsteinKreuger: it wont hurt to try fsck and test the memory.. etc23:41
Kreugerthere's an issue with the login manager, I can't remember which one I have but I think it was LDM. I've had this issue for months and couldn't get it figured out so I gave up on it. Now Im trying again23:42
KreugerLet me go back into it and see what's going on so I can provide more details23:43
SonikkuAmericaIt could be as simple as a bad ~/.Xauthority too23:44
KreugerAt the time, I still had XFCE on it. So I see the Xubuntu logo, the little icon spins in circles and nothing comes up\23:45
KreugerI hit ctrl+alt+f1 to get a terminal and the screen goes black except for that little spinning icon23:45
holsteinKreuger: if you konw what you are having an issue with, fix it.. otherwise, follow the steps i gave above, and confirm23:45
holsteinKreuger: try control + alt + F423:46
holsteintry other tty's23:46
KreugerI tried hitting each one after and it does nothing. Should I restart it and try again?23:46
holsteinKreuger: can you get to the guest account desktop? have you done fsck? have you booted the the recover kernel?23:47
Kreugerno Im just trying to use the tty's. I don't have a guest account23:47
Kreugerooh tty4 just came up23:47
Kreugerok so now I have terminal access. I need to figure out why I can't get any kind of GUI23:48
KreugerI think now the issue is driver related. It's coming up saying that the nvidia module is not found and then fatal server error: no screens found23:49
KreugerI tried using startlxde and it says cannot open display23:50
holsteinKreuger: try another driver, then23:50
holsteinKreuger: remove the proprietary graphics driver you installed..23:50
KreugerIf it's saying it's not found, would that not mean that it's already been removed?23:51
holsteinKreuger: i dont trust what "it" says.. if you installed a driver, remove it23:51
KreugerI dont remember installing it because it was so long ago that I had this issue start.23:52
holsteinKreuger: test with a live CD, and see that the hard ware isnt failing.. use fsck.. test the memory23:52
holsteinKreuger: ok.. confirm that its there or not, and remove it if so23:52
Kreugerremoving now via apt-get23:53
KreugerI dont currently have internet access on the computer that is having issues23:53
holsteinKreuger: why not? plug it in..23:53
KreugerWhat do you mean?23:53
holsteinKreuger: plug it in, and get "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" to complete without error23:54
holsteinKreuger: plug it in? to the internet..23:54
KreugerI only have wifi and I don't know if the drivers are setup for the adapter I have23:54
holsteinKreuger: you have a router you can plug into23:55
holsteinKreuger: plug it in.. its the easiest23:55
KreugerIt's not in my house. It's shared with  my neighbour.23:55
holsteinKreuger: take it to the neighbors house then23:55
holsteinKreuger: or, try the other options i gave that dont involve the internet23:55
KreugerWell I removed the driver, tried starting xfce4 to see if that would work. It went blank so I hit tty4 again and Im watching it give me output like dmesg23:56
KreugerRebooting now to see if that works23:57
holsteinKreuger: you'll need to reboot after removing the driver23:57
holsteinKreuger: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1270209 if you'd like to remove the driver issues from the equation and test with the vesa driver23:57
holsteinKreuger: at some point, since you really dont know much about the system, you may want to entertain reinstallation.. that typically takes less than 10 minutes..23:58
