* Overboost is away: bbl00:19
prodigalIf anyone needs a solution to the "no SSL/TSL" available problem in the 14.04 repo of Pan Newsreader, here it is:  I found this site that allows you to download deb files of the previous builds before the SSL/TLS drop.  Note that the ftp sites have i386 builds as well if that is what you need.  Use gdebi from the repos to install.  It works perfectly for me in Trusty.  Once installed you will be pestered to upgrade to the new version.  DON'T! To avoid00:22
prodigal being pestered, open Synaptic Package Manager and find and hilite "Pan," and then click the "Package" menu and select "Lock Version."  I might as well add this as well:  If you want to have your Pan databases stored on a different drive or location than your HOME folder, do the following:  Navigate to the following folder:  /etc and find a file called "environment." Edit this file (you  will need root privileges) and add the following line to set the00:22
prodigal appropriate environment variable for Pan.  PAN_HOME="/media/path_to_desired_location"  (quotes are to be included).  Save file and reboot.  Enjoy!00:22

dave20hi is there any problem in installing KDE apps in Xubuntu other than having extra KDE libraries?08:34
cfhowlettdave20 nope.  go for it.  sudo apt-get install kde               for the desktop environment or kde-desktop for the full-meal-deal08:35
mappsdont think so sir08:35
dave20cfhowlett, not talking about whole KDE desktop, just a app.08:35
knomedave20, naturally the libraries affect performance08:36
dave20and using that in XFCE.08:36
cfhowlettdave20 oh that - nope no problem but as noted, it will undoubted pull several dependencies08:36
knomedave20, might even be loaded on boot/when you're not running that app08:36
dave20knome, you mean the app will auto start?08:36
knomeno, but some of the libraries might be loaded08:37
knomedepends much on what you are installing08:37
dave20I am trying to install K3b and Kdenlive08:37
dave20knome, you mean higher RAM and CPU usage?08:39
knomeyes.08:39
knomebut if you really want those applications, there's nothing you can do to stop it08:39
knomein most cases, it's not something to worry about08:39
knomejust pointing out08:39
dave20I don't think Kdenlive have a good alternative though...08:39
knomewell there you go08:39
dave20knome, Ok, thank you.08:40
knomei've used pitivi for simple editing.08:40
dave20knome, pitivi is a bit buggy, Ill try Openshot then.08:41
knomeit is...but reporting bugs is the best way to get them fixed08:41
dave20I think pitivi started crowdfunding recently, hope the development gets faster.08:43
knomei wouldn't need more features, i'd like to get it stable as well08:44
koegs:q08:44
knomebut otoh, i need video editing very rarely, so i'm not too involved with it08:44
koegsups, wrong window :)08:44
dave20yes, hope it gets more stable.08:45
dave20also any way to add "Open with" in Thunar context menu for file and directories, "Custom Action" only lets you add a single app.08:46
knomedon't think you can assign that to directories08:47
knomebut it should work for all files08:47
knomeif you want, you can see if there is a wishlist bug, and "me too" it, or if there isn't one, create a new one...08:47
dave20in launchpad?08:48
knomeon launchpad or xfce bugzilla08:49
dave20ok08:49
knomexfce bugzilla would probably be better08:49

gema1hola, im backing up for first time to an external disk, what file system should i use for the partitions on my new disk if i want to access data "everywhere" -mac, linux, windows-. I work only with ubuntu but i want to be able to share data with mac and windows users on my external Drive12:46
gema1xubuntu*12:47
cfhowlettgema1 I've found it easiest to use dropbox for that purpose.12:47
knozzleI use exFAT for those purposes. It is as versatile as fat, but without the small file restrictions.12:48
gema1but i lost all my data, so im gonna be going collecting many data from my friends that uses multiple os, im talking about GBs of data, many personal pictures, i dont want to use cloud services12:48
gema1what is the biggest silefile in exFAT? may i use permisions on folders or should i encrypt confidential?12:49
gema1may exFAT encrypt a folder by default?12:49
knozzleI would suggest taking a look at the wiki article for exFAT for further information.12:50
gema1doing so, thank you12:50
knozzleThere is also a very detailed wiki page for file encryption on the Arch wiki (which can easily be modified for Ubuntu derivative usage)12:51
knozzleNow that TrueCrypt has been audited and found to be safe, I would use that for your sensitive information.12:51

cousteauis it hard to change the default file manager?  I don't quite like Thunar13:10
cousteauin Xubuntu 12.04 I've changed the default FM to Nautilus; however whenever I insert a memory stick or double-click a desktop folder Thunar opens instead13:10
cfhowlettcousteau same thing here.  never did find a fix ...13:11
cousteauand I don't know if newer versions have made this easier or harder (or stayed the same)13:11
cousteaufor example, I was told that Gnome has been made independent from the file manager, so you can really set whichever you want13:13
cousteauI've always liked Nautilus and Gnome, so I was considering installing XFCE with PCManFM (which seems to be the closest thing to that nowadays)13:14

gema1i was suggested exFat to make data readable by default with linux, windows and mac13:41
knozzlegemal: it's exFat, not extFat.13:44
brainwashgema1: mmh, sadly it's not possible with gparted13:44
brainwashsee http://gparted.org/features.php13:44

Fohlenah thank you sir! :)15:21
Fohlenalso. Since I installed nvidia graphic drivers, the bootloader seems a bit uggly, and the pretty blue load screen doesnt show up any more. Any tipp?15:22
knomeas far as we know, plymouth is not working with the proprietary nvidia drivers15:25
ElderDryasknome: Is there any way to install w/o plymouth (a la Solydxk)?15:27
knomeElderDryas, i have no idea, not with the standard installation at least15:29
knomeand that would lose you the "pretty blue load screen" anyway15:29
gema1puff, i try learning but is to dificult for me to create extFat partitions with exfat-utils, im not and advanced linux user. is there a graphical tool (similar to gparted) to create extFat partitions on a disk?15:29
ElderDryasknome:  yeah, but I also run nvidia...so it's a wash :)15:30
ElderDryasknome: would it be worthwhile to put in a wishlist...or would just be a waste of time?15:31
knomeElderDryas, put what in the wishlist?15:31
ElderDryasno plymouth on install.15:31
knomethere isn't much we can do about it not working with the proprietary nvidia drivers15:31
knomeehm, well, you'd need some other boot screen anyway.15:31
knomeso yeah, pretty much a waste of time...15:32
* ElderDryas likes the scrolling test telling me what's going on :)15:32
ElderDryass/test/text15:32
cousteauFohlen, for resetting configurations I guess you'd have to figure out which file/directory (probably somewhere inside ~/.config) contains them and then rename it15:32
cousteau(better renaming than deleting, in case you end up deleting the wrong thing)15:33
knomeElderDryas, you are a corner case, you can just remove plymouth ;)15:33
* ElderDryas wonders why he always gets sent to the corner, it's just not fair :(15:33
gema1if i make my partitions, ext4, do windows and mac has free (open source) or freeware utilites to read and write on ext4?15:34
ElderDryasand I think the PC phrase now is "outlier" :)15:34
knomegema1, having googled for it quickly, there seems to be many tools. no idea how well they work though.15:36
cousteaugema1, I know there are tools for ext2/3; about ext4 I haven't seen much, but iirc there was something at least to read them15:41
GridCubeusually same tools that work for ext3 work for ext415:42
GridCubeusually15:42
gema1so defitly is to diffiuclt for me to part through console,  so my only choices is use a grafical tool to part my disk. From the options (ot exfat posible), ntfs or ext4 would be the best choices. Which is most accesible trought windows and mac please?15:43
cousteauhttp://www.howtogeek.com/112888/3-ways-to-access-your-linux-partitions-from-windows/  ->  Ext2explore seems particularly interesting since it's install-less and thus could be stored in a memory stick15:43
cousteauneeds admin permissions to run, though15:44
cousteauoh, but it doesn't mount stuff, just allows you to copy it15:44
knomegema1, i wouldn't install linux on ntfs. is there a specific reason you need ext4 over ext3 ?15:45
SAKUJ0hey there. when I have XFCE(Xubuntu) running, I cannot log out. When I turn off my tv and turn it on I get a black screen (not when I swap to TTY1-6) why could that be?15:48
SAKUJ0if i use for instance XBMC as a session this black screen issue does not occur15:48
gema1no15:49
knomegema1, then go with ext3, since it seems to be supported better in windows15:49
knomeSAKUJ0, which xubuntu release?15:49
gema1i mean, no reason about ext4 or ext3, i know so lees about that i just asummed ext4 would be the last version, thous better hehe15:49

SAKUJ0er i upgraded yesterday from ubuntu 11.10, knome, and am fully updated at ubuntu 14.04 and installed xubuntu-desktop15:50

brainwashno16:23
SAKUJ0hmm it probably starts when i first boot into xfce i haven't restarted the machine in a day or so16:24

SAKUJ0it is not really an issue so far i have shut down everything and restarted lightdm16:24
brainwashok16:24
SAKUJ0right now the issue is that my screen stays black when i turn off my tv and killing gnome-screensaver and xscreensaver did not help16:24

SAKUJ0so the only things causing this issue should be xfpm or upowerd16:25

SAKUJ0i don't know why i bother with it right now :p for an htpc openbox is at least as good (my gf wouldn't like it that much). i just have a rush of solveritis :p16:25

SAKUJ0people have been using the same workaround (restart lightdm)16:28
brainwashthe known issues one is related to suspending via lid close (laptop)16:28
SAKUJ0though for others it got solved by killing light-locker, which is weird16:28
SAKUJ0hmm good point, they all seemed to have laptops when i read through the bug reports16:29
brainwashand let me guess, your problem does not occur when you turn the tv off/on while the login screen is visible, right?16:30

SAKUJ0it does not occur with openbox/XBMC as a session either16:31
SAKUJ0just once i log into xfce16:31
SAKUJ0even when i kill xfpm and all screensaver processes16:31
brainwashah, so it should be caused by xfce4-session16:32
brainwashehm, xfce4-settings16:32
brainwashthe settings daemon (xfsettingsd)16:32
brainwashwhich also handles display configurations16:33
SAKUJ0should i try killing it and see if that helps? :p16:33

SAKUJ0before or after i login?16:34
SAKUJ0i suppose after?16:34
SAKUJ0so it replaces the daemon?16:34
brainwashit may not be a big deal, but filing a bug report will help the devs to fix it16:35
brainwashyes, the daemon will be replaced16:35
brainwashand it should print some debug info in the terminal window16:35
SAKUJ0yes it is a bit rough to get the full debug info though. for some reason i cannot talk to DISPLAY=0 via TTY1. So i only have the debug information until i turn off the tv16:48
SAKUJ0and when i restart lightdm it prints everything to TTY1 but again it is hard to parse it16:48
SAKUJ0piping the output to a logfile does not work either16:48
SAKUJ0a strange thing, though. when i swap to TTY1-6 and turn off my tv it do not get a black screen :p16:49
