kbmonkeyKilos, 0/08:41
kbmonkeysuperfly, is that the underground maze you talk about?08:47
charl_Maaz: coffee on10:11
* Maaz washes some mugs10:11
charl_good afternoon10:11
charl_hi Kilos, kbmonkey 10:11
MaazCoffee's ready for charl_!10:15
charl_Maaz: thanks10:15
Maazcharl_: Okay :-)10:15
thefatmunkyhi all…linux/ubuntu newbie here…hoping someone can help me get my installation up and running, battling a bit. thanks12:17
charl_hi thefatmunky 12:20
charl_just ask, don't ask to ask :)12:20
thefatmunkyoh ok, thanks12:20
thefatmunkyi’m trying to dual boot on a mac (macbook pro 8.2), 1st i tried refit, now refind boot manager, getting the same result, tried v14.04 and also 12.04, both doing the same thing, boot, choose bootable usb with linux on, gets to where it says will load kernel next and then screen just goes black/blank, anyone familiar with this?12:23
charl_yes12:28
charl_i don't know your method12:28
charl_but i have developed an extensive solution a couple of years back12:28
charl_https://github.com/ushahidi/Ubuntu_MacBook_Pro_8.112:28
charl_yours is one version later12:28
charl_i would assume what works on 8.1 would work on 8.2 as well12:29
charl_but i can't guarantee that of course12:29
charl_you can compare the lshw dump if you like12:29
charl_https://raw.githubusercontent.com/ushahidi/Ubuntu_MacBook_Pro_8.1/master/lshw.txt12:29
charl_i created a bootable usb flash drive with syslinux12:30
charl_the only issue i had was with the wireless12:30
charl_i needed to install a very strange hack to get that going12:31
charl_i don't know if this is at all still relevant on ubuntu 14.0412:31
charl_they probably long fixed it already12:31
charl_i don't have the MBP anymore so i can't compare12:31
thefatmunkythanks charl_! will have a look at that and give it a go12:31
charl_look at the create script and the method i used there to create the usb flash drive12:31
thefatmunkydo you know if 14.04 works on older macs like the 8.2?12:31
charl_i would assume it does, i have no idea12:31
thefatmunkyok, tx12:31
thefatmunkyi created my bootable usb with “Linux usb builder”, worked great and very simple12:33
charl_i'm not familiar with this tool12:33
charl_but i have grown weary of all these automated tools12:33
charl_i have had many problems and now prefer to do things manually12:33
charl_then at least i have control over what happens and know where to look in case it doesn't work12:34
charl_you don't know what all these automated tools do underwater12:34
charl_but i guess, if it works, it works12:34
thefatmunkyif i still don’t come right, anyone know of a place in jhb where i can take my mac and have it installed?12:36
charl_make contact with the glug12:38
charl_there *might* be somebody who is willing to help you12:39
charl_i can warn you, a lot of linux people are really anti-apple12:39
thefatmunkythanks, will try do that12:41
charl_:)12:42
charl_good luck !12:42
charl_i'm off ttyl12:42
thefatmunkythanks, cheers12:42

Kilosnot sure if it will work on a mac13:22
KilosMaaz, google unetbootin for mac13:22
MaazKilos: "UNetbootin - Homepage and Downloads" http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ :: "UNetbootin, Universal Netboot Installer | Free software downloads at ..." http://sourceforge.net/projects/unetbootin/ :: "Fixing UNetbootin on Mac OS X to create a Bootable Linux USB" http://tech.anoj.net/2013/01/fixing-unetbootin-on-mac-os-x-to-create.html :: "How to create a13:22
Maazbootable USB stick on OS X without UNetbootin in ..." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4K1TajD3z…13:22
thefatmunkytried it, after it created the bootable usb it said something like “only for use on a pc” 13:23
Kiloscant a mac boot from usb?13:23

MaazCoffee's ready for Kilos and thefatmunky!13:24

Kilos?13:43
kbmonkeyhar harhar, funny Kilos 13:44
Kiloslol13:44
kbmonkeyto answer your question Kilos : null13:44
Kilosi think it was xethron that installed onto a mac some weeks back13:45
kbmonkeyDunno. but I read in the Linux Voice magazine they going to have articles on doing just that13:46
thefatmunkymac prob not the best machine to get started on but all i have right now, now just to get the damn thing to work13:46
kbmonkeyall I know is they make it tricksy to boot anything other than osx :(13:47
kbmonkeybut it can be done apparently13:47
kbmonkeyhave you tried anything so far thefatmunky ?13:48
thefatmunkywell i tried both refit and refind as boot manager to see if the problem is not there, but still doing so, then also i tried 14.04 first and then 12.04 but also doing so….battled to get the usb bootable on mac but then got past that and now stuck here…starts the install, gets to loading kernel then just ends there, black/blank screen13:50
kbmonkeythis is the intel based mac you have thefatmunky ?13:51
thefatmunkyyes13:51
kbmonkeydoes refit detect your ubuntu installation? 13:53
thefatmunkyit detects the usb with it on, i select it, it starts and gets to that point yes13:53
kbmonkeyI have to ask because I am not sure if you meant it booted half way, or did not boot at all13:53
kbmonkeyah13:53
Kilosidea13:54
Kiloscan you run the ubuntu live?13:54
kbmonkeywhat is the last thing you see printed out before it hangs thefatmunky ?13:54
Kilosdont go the install toute and see if it works as a live stick first13:54
thefatmunkyhehe…live?13:54
thefatmunkylast thing is loading kernel13:55
kbmonkeyusually if the usb boot hangs or crashes, we suggest you check if your ISO download is not corrupt13:55
thefatmunkyoh, run it off the stick?13:55
Kilosubuntu has two choices13:55
Kilostry and install13:55
kbmonkeyyes it runs off the stick directly into memory13:55
Kilosand everything works then?13:55
thefatmunkycan try that13:56
thefatmunkybrb13:56
Kilosalso it will put an install icon on the desktop that you can double click and try install that way13:56

bushtech_superfly: thanks, reading up cron, will have a bash at it19:51
superflybushtech_: back in the day when Telkom had their R7 for all night special, and I still had dial up, I used to make my server dial up to the internet at 5 past 7 at night and kill the connection at 6:55 the next morning, except for weekends, where I'd dial up on a Friday night and kill the connection on Monday morning19:54
superflyusing cron19:54
bushtech_Thats exactly what I'm trying to19:55
bushtech_So do I add somethinf like this in front of my  zsync command:1 0 * * * 19:56
bushtech_Do I need to do any cron setup beforehand?19:57
superflysudo crontab -e19:58
superfly(edit cron)19:58
superflythat should kick off at 1 minute past midnight19:58
superflyor just "crontab -e" to use your own crontab (not the system one)19:59
bushtech_so I put my whole zsync command into the cron file as a line and start it with something like 1 0 * * * 20:01
