SachiruHello!08:50
SachiruI'm currently planning to deploy Lubuntu onto the following setup: 2 USB drives, 8GB each, and 2 WD Green Drives, 2 TB each08:50
SachiruI intend to install Lubuntu's base OS onto the USB drives, then have the two 2TB drives as storage for my VMs (KVM virtualized)08:51
SachiruMy question is would it be possible to set it up so that the 2 2TB drives are set up as mirrors of each other under software RAID except for a 8GB partition on each drive, both acting as swap space (essentially striped swap on each drive)?08:52
SachiruOr once I set software RAID on the two drives it consumes the entire drive?08:52

vsgillI switch to ubuntu from windows six months ago. I find ubuntu extremely slow on my laptop11:42
vsgillI want to switch to lubuntu after reading about it, is this a wise choice?11:42
vsgillI'm still new in linux and have a few questions if anyone is around11:42
holsteinvsgill: it'll always depend.. but, keep in mind, lubuntu *is* ubuntu12:16
holsteinvsgill: you can install lxde or lubuntu-desktop into your current ubuntu, and just choose lxde at boot12:16
vsgillholstein: Thanks I will try that12:17
vsgillI just want the system to run faster12:17
holsteinvsgill: nothing makes your system any faster except a faster system.. lxde can use less resources.. or, not try and use 3d, which unity does12:17
holsteinvsgill: i use lubuntu on netbooks, and older hardware.. and newer hardware where i want to get the most out of the system resources12:18
vsgillholstein: I will try and tweak my ubuntu and see if it's any better, also install lxde12:19
vsgillThanks for your help12:19
holsteinvsgill: there is no way to prevent unity, main ubuntu, from using 3d12:22
holsteinvsgill: that is likely the situtation.. what you can "tweak" is the graphics driver to better support the environment you are trying to run12:23
vsgillholstein: I tried to get the nvidia drivers to work and it just wouldn't, my laptop is also 5 years old12:23
holsteinvsgill: you can google search, and confirm these facts.. unity is trying to use 3d rendering.. if you do not have hardware that supports 3d rendering in linux, or, you have not implemented a graphics driver that can, then unity moves to trying to do the rendering in software.. this will be slow, and seem slow.. and there is not "tweak" to address that12:24
vsgillah okay, i will try and get the driver working again then12:24
holsteinvsgill: nvidia is responsible, ultimately, for providing support for the products they create, and if they have stopped supporting your device, or dont support it properly or fully, then, that can cause you to not get 3d support in linux12:25
holsteinvsgill: there may not be a driver that supports 3d for you device in general, or in the most recent kernels.. etc12:26
vsgillI will check for some solutions for the driver online and get it working12:26
vsgillhopefully!12:26
vsgillThanks12:26
holsteinvsgill: as long as you realize, there may not be a solution.. if nvidia has not decided to support your device for linux12:27
holsteinthe "best" solution may be trying to utilize a system without or with as little 3d as possible..12:28
vsgillyeah, I might switch to a lightweight distro if I cant get it to work12:28
holsteinvsgill: you dont need to "switch" to a lightweight distro, if this is the case12:29
holsteinyou need to switch to a desktop environment that doesnt require 3d12:29
holsteingnome3 for example, forces and expects the same level of driver support12:29
vsgillah yes, like lxde12:30
holsteinlubuntu and ubuntu are the same distro.. lubuntu is a "flavor", or version, or derivitive, or however you want to look at it12:31
alketHi , I acidentally removed the "start" button , how do I add it back ?13:49
DeamonHello, I'm using lubuntu 14.04 x6413:51

DeamonIs there a management utility for this?13:52

NRDiscipleso sudo apt-get install sane would work17:49
holsteinNRDisciple: there are GUI's17:49
holsteinNRDisciple: you'll want to just have the hardware, and see what its about.. nothing about linux/ubuntu is preventing that printer/scanner from printing or scanning.. but, sometimes, support can be challenging, when linux support is not promised17:50
NRDisciplei do know that =/17:51
NRDiscipleclient is scared about xp vulnerabilities and wanted security17:52
geniiProbably want sane-utils as well so you can issue stuff like scanimage17:52
