rcw2any docs for installing openoffice in kubuntu using the deb format02:45
valoriercw2: why not just from our packages?02:47
valoriedeb is always a last resort02:47
valorie!info openoffice02:47
ubottuPackage openoffice does not exist in trusty02:47
valorie!info libreoffice02:48
ubottulibreoffice (source: libreoffice): office productivity suite (metapackage). In component universe, is optional. Version 1:4.2.3~rc3-0ubuntu2 (trusty), package size 26 kB, installed size 161 kB02:48
rcw2nothing for trust, so must use deb then?02:48
rcw2trusty*02:48
valorieare you saying you want openoffice not libreoffice?02:49
valorieafaik openoffice is not really being developed any more02:49
rcw2valorie, i was trying to use libreoffice, but it's full of bugs02:49
valorie!deb02:50
ubottudeb is the Debian package format, also used by Ubuntu. To install .deb files, simply double-click (in Ubuntu) or click (in Kubuntu) on them to start the GDebi utility.02:50
rcw2openoffice is looking for dependencies02:50
valorieif you try that and openoffice is indeed better, please tell us that02:50
rcw2how can i resolve them02:50
rcw2tell you here?02:51
valorieI suppose install the dependencies.....02:51
valoriegdebi should do that, afaik02:51
rcw2gdebi should know what they are?  is there a tutorial for this process?02:53
valoriercw2: I imagine so02:55
valorieif you had libreoffice installed though, I would think you would have most of the dependencies already02:56
valoriethey are rather recent forks02:56
valoriealthough as I said, OO.o is almost if not entirely unmaintained02:56
valorieafaik02:56
Unit193Apache has it, actually.02:57
valoriesad, I wish they would recombine02:58
rcw2i purged libreoffice already03:06
rcw2i apt-got gdebi but its not gui?03:06
rcw2in the help list i don't see a way to tell it to capture dependencies03:07
rcw2this tutorial says it should auto search http://www.debian-tutorials.com/how-to-easy-install-deb-files-plus-dependencies-using-gdebi03:09
rcw2but it says Dependency is not satisfiable: openoffice-ure03:09
rcw2and doesnt search for it03:09

valoriercw2: please file bugs when you find them03:44

valoriesome folks feel like reporting bugs is complaining03:46
valoriebut really, it is a contribution03:46
valoriethe more information supplied, the more it helps the devels to fix the bugs03:46
rcw2it seems worth while, but it is time consuming03:46
valorieit can be, for sure03:47
valoriethis last round I started using `ubuntu-bug` from the cli while running the beta of 14.0403:48

keithzg_Arghh, these constant crashes are driving me crazy. I'd actually prefer it was on my home machines; having kernel panics on my work desktop is *extremely* unfortunate :(16:15
keithzg_Anyone have any idea what could be causing crashes like https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-4nMjWeofiio/U4isWvAbYGI/AAAAAAAAFnc/cfmJu5n4Ask/w1375-h774-no/IMG_20140530_100533864.jpg ? Although I get slightly different panics/faults each time it seems.16:19
geniikeithzg_: Have you run a memtest on it?16:25
shattingducksuap: you still there?16:25
shattingducksuap_: you still there?16:25
keithzg_genii: Oh believe me, that was the first thing I did when it happened more than once, ran the tests for over an hour and no faults were found.16:26
keithzg_That would've been so easy, just buy some more RAM and be done with.16:28
geniikeithzg_: I know that many MSI boards have ACPI issues with linux. Might want to try tinkering with some boot options like maybe acpi=  and try different values like off/noirq/strict  or so on16:39
keithzg_genii: This is an ASUS Intel-based board, but sure, perhaps. ACPI is kindof the devil anyways. My main confusion is that this wasn't the case some time ago (been using the same hardware for two years or so now).16:41
geniiIf it's Asus, why in the message there does it say "MSI MS-7788/H61M-P31 (G3)  (MS-7788), BIOS V2.4 04/17/2012"   ?16:45
keithzg_d'oh16:45
keithzg_heh you caught me, I was remembering wrong16:45
geniiOr is this just some random screenshot of a generic kernel panic? ;)16:45
keithzg_I cheaped out on the build of my own PC since it was right after I got to this company, didn't feel like I could demand more for myself since I was already kindof demanding I get to build myself a new computer and run Linux instead of Windows, heh.16:46
keithzg_Every subsequent build, and two before that, have been ASUS.16:47
geniikeithzg_: Ah, OK. Yeah, at any rate, I'd try tinkering with the acpi options on kernel load line.16:47
geniiAsus almost always work out-of-the-box :)16:48
keithzg_genii: Yeah, it's why they've kept my loyalty over all these years, heh.  I'm definitely going to try fiddling with ACPI kernel options, very good suggestion. I also noticed that the firmware on the SSD is woefully out of date, *and* that was a part I more recently installed, so a prime suspect there too.16:49
keithzg_Time to reboot into a SystemRescueCD usb for a full backup first, though, gonna be ultra-paranoid instead of cowboy, for once ;)16:49
geniikeithzg_: Might also want to experiment to see if it's doing it only from certain shutdown states like hibernate. Some boards can boot no prob from cold but choke hard on suspend and hibernate16:50
geniiwould help narrow down the issue16:51
keithzg_genii: In theory I've disabled all hibernate and suspend and such, I want this PC either running or off!16:51
geniiSo acpi=off might be first to try16:52
geniiCan't recall if it's a synonym for noacpi but maybe16:53
keithzg_I thought the other, confusingly similar option was "noapic"?16:53
geniiapic an acpi are different16:53
keithzg_I know, I meant similarly named, but I wasn't sure that noacpi was actually an option.16:54
geniiYay, lunch arrived!16:54
keithzg_Good plan...16:54
rberg_I would take a look at /proc/interrupts is there a lot of sharing going on?16:54
rberg_I had a issue with my network card , sata controller, and com port sharing interrupts.. this caused kernel panics with a similar message when doing lots of network and disk io16:56
rberg_I disabled the comport and passed a kernel cmd to force msix for my network adapter and that solved the panics for me16:56
geniiI miss the old days of manually setting interrupts with jumpers...16:57
rberg_or dip switches? I do not miss that :)16:57
keithzg_rberg_: Hmmm interesting. I don't *think* there's any shared interrupts, other than one duplicate PCIe-related one from what I see: http://paste.kde.org/p38djzpkl16:58
geniirberg_: Always used to be issues with irq 3/4 on those com ports that interfered with modems, so I didn't mind setting them manually16:58
rberg_all my co-workers were like 'what year is it?! and you are talking about interrupts?"16:59
keithzg_Heh I only *barely* had to set interrupts with jumpers in some rare cases, but I definitely remember having to set them manually in *software* a lot16:59
keithzg_rberg_: Yeah that was exactly my first reaction when you mentioned interrupts, I flashed back to 1998 when I thought "finally, I'm done with them!"17:00
geniirberg_: Hehe17:00
keithzg_Uhhh....wait. acpi=off isn't going to help me, clearly.17:02
keithzg_...since aparently I already did that at some point long enough ago that I've forgotten, heh.17:02
keithzg_cat /proc/commandline: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-3.13.0-27-generic.efi.signed root=UUID=c7fd02cd-d83b-4967-b827-bf218d7c2555 ro acpi=off17:02
keithzg_genii: Do you think there's any hope of anything *less* than outright acpi=off helping? Stabbing in the dark, I know...17:06
geniikeithzg_: Maybe a newer BIOS if one's available17:11
geniikeithzg_: I know that the hackintosh people had major issues getting power management working properly on MSI and someone eventually just did their own BIOS mod17:13
keithzg_genii: There does seem to be newer ones...yeahhh, MSI, quite the pain. Heh on their firmware download page, they link to their bios flashing instructions, http://www.msi.com/service/biosflash/17:14
keithzg_...which is a 404.17:14
keithzg_Clearly, the mark of quality and care ;)17:15
geniikeithzg: Does it still have Windows on it someplace?17:20
keithzg-n9genii: never did, built it from parts as it now is, but apparently the 'bios' can flash itself. Just gotta get the image file sitting on a FAT-formatted drive, piece of cake.17:22
geniikeithzg: http://ca.msi.com/page/biosupdate  seems vaguely useful17:22
keithzg-n9genii: yeah, would've been a decent fallback, luckily in this brave new UEFI world the 'BIOS' (they keep using this word; I do not think they know what it means) was indeed able to successfully update from the flashing image I put bare on a FAT32-formatted usb drive.17:26
keithzg-n9Now I reboot and wait to see if it eventually panics...17:28
rburgosnavashi there, wondering if anyone is up for a question17:39
BluesKajrburgosnavas, ask and you'll find out :)17:40
rburgosnavas:)17:40
rburgosnavasEver since I upgraded to 14.04, I keep getting 2 login screens at start up, and after unlocking17:41
rburgosnavasone screens uses the default theme and the other a custom theme with a background image I selected17:42
rburgosnavasanyway, i have to enter my password twice every single time. kind of annoying but nothing to get a migrane about17:43
BluesKajok what about the desktop, is it always the same17:44
rburgosnavasthe desktop is always the same17:45
BluesKajand this is 14.04 kubuntu exclusively, no other DE's like unity or gnome in the login options?17:47
rburgosnavasI haven't tried in other environments, but that's a good point17:48
BluesKajwhat about your partitioning , / and /home separate or just one partition for the whole OS?17:50
rburgosnavasseparate17:58
BluesKajwhat does system settings>login screen show? you may have chosen one as another user, hence the 2 logins18:03
keithzg_rburgosnavas: You don't happen to have both lightdm and kdm installed? I've never heard of them being able to stack like that, but...18:04
rburgosnavashmmm18:04
rburgosnavasI have lightdm, but how do I check if kdm is installed?18:05
BluesKajkeithzg_, I thought that at first but lightdm will remove kdm during the install afaik18:05
rburgosnavaskdm is not installed18:05
keithzg_BluesKaj: Naw, they just disable eachother, in theory. Trust me, I've swapped back and forth to try and solve issues before, heh18:05
keithzg_Yeah, didn't seem likely, but I figured it was worth a check.18:05
* BluesKaj thinks rburgosnavas is logging as 2 users18:06
* keithzg_ once had four display managers installed, because he is a crazy person18:06
rburgosnavasyou know what? i tried to do a reset in the Login Screen (LightDM) window, and when I got the prompt to enter root password, I saw two of me listed in the menu!18:07
BluesKajyup, zs I suspected18:10
BluesKajaz18:10
BluesKajor is it as :)18:11
rburgosnavashaha18:12
rburgosnavasdoing 'cat /etc/passwd' only shows one of me18:16
keithzg_rburgosnavas: Another stab in the dark (my specialty!), try "getent passwd" instead.18:19
rburgosnavassame18:21
keithzg_rburgosnavas: Might just want to reset your lightdm settings entirely and see if that solves it.18:36
rburgosnavasI'm trying this out atm https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/polkit-kde-1/+bug/103702818:37
ubottuLaunchpad bug 1037028 in polkit-kde-1 (Ubuntu) "Duplicated user in authentication dialog" [Undecided,Confirmed]18:37
rburgosnavasbut yes, I'll look into resetting LightDM18:37
keithzg_Hmm, polkit being the culprit also sounds likely. It IS a Red Hat, not-very-UNIX-y kindof thing after all :P18:38
keithzg_Although polkit shouldn't be affecting *logins*, I wouldn't think.18:40
rburgosnavasok, well I got rid of the duplication. But I still get the two login screens18:41
rburgosnavasok, on to doing the "reset LightDM" research18:41
rburgosnavas(Learning a lot here) I have GDM and LightDM installed. Can I safely remove GDM to see if this fixes things?18:50
keithzg_Yuuuuuup.18:57
BluesKajgdm is the old greeter for ubuntu18:57
keithzg_If you only have KDE installed it's definitely not an issue. If you have other desktop environments it *might* be, but LightDM can handle pretty much any of them AFAIK (never tried it with GNOME 3.0, admittedly)18:58
BluesKajrburgosnavas, you must have migrated from ubuntu at one point18:58
rburgosnavasyes18:59
BluesKajlightdm is default for all flavours afaik18:59

billy_Hallo.. I intend to to upgrade kubuntu 12.04 to 14.04 using the command "u-devel-release-upgrade". Is there anything that i must pay attension before i use it ??21:17
billy_I checked and there is updated the current version (12.04). Anythink else..??21:19
robotdevilif it were me, and I have no expertise on it, I would roll back to a non properitary video driver first (may cause you more problems thou) and I would switch back to default themes, and that might have no merit but thats what i would do21:21
robotdevilbut I probably wouldnt upgrade either21:22
billy_??  :O21:23
robotdevilfresh installs always are better but are a lot of work in some cases21:23
robotdevilmaybe make a backup first21:24
robotdevilis that the correct command too, I seem to remember it being something else, but my memories are dated to say the least21:27
billy_I suppose that Firefox's History & Knotes for example,  will be not be affected (in normal case..)21:28
billy_Any other opinion or thoughts pleeeease..??..??21:31
valorieI upgraded with no problems, billy21:33
valoriebest to remove any PPAs though21:34
valoriea few people had problems when they weren't correctly autoremoved21:34
valoriealso, you don't want devel-release-upgrade21:35
valoriejust do-release-upgrade now21:35
ikoniavalorie: will that work for 12.04 -> 14.04 ?21:35
valoriedevel-release is now 14.1021:35
=== SJrX is now known as SJr
valorieshould, but let me look up our page about how to do it21:36
robotdevilthats the command I was thinking of21:36
ikoniavalorie: ubuntu won't do it currently until 14.04.121:36
ikoniavalorie: curious to if the kubuntu system hits the same problem21:36
valoriehttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/TrustyUpgrades/Kubuntu/12.04LTS21:36
valorieah, it shows: kubuntu-devel-release-upgrade21:37
valorieI did all this back in the beta121:37
ikoniait's s total shambles21:37
robotdevilbest not to rush an upgrade cause you'll always think of something after21:37
ikoniaupgrade to a development release for a stable LTS releae.21:37
valorieikonia, imo most people don't need LTS21:38
valoriethat is for businesses and such21:38
valorieservers21:38
ikoniavalorie: couldn't disagree less, more so with the crazy rolling platform now fast approaching21:38
valoriebut for those who like stability, it is there21:39
ikoniaor disagree more, I should say21:39
robotdevilright21:39
ikoniaeither way, it's a total shambles/joke that you have to do a development upgrade to get to a stable release.21:39
valoriedo-release-upgrade should work21:39
valorieas you say21:39
valorieafaik, it does work21:39
ikoniaif it's the same as ubuntu it won't find the 14.04 release21:40
robotdevilI thought you could lts to lts21:40
ikoniabut I'm curious to if kubuntu does it differently21:40
ikoniarobotdevil: you can, but for some reason canonical appears to have blocked 12.04 -> 14.04 until 14.04.1 is released21:41
billy_..;) I Think that this is the "correct" command.. Right..??    kubuntu-devel-release-upgrade21:41
valorieyou are correct that it is at .1 release that users are prompted by the gui for an upgrade21:41
valoriebilly_: yes21:41
valoriehttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/TrustyUpgrades/Kubuntu/12.04LTS21:41
robotdevilwell likely for good reason, if you have no reason to upgrade besides itchiness wait for 14.04.121:42
billy_and what about Firefox's open tabs & History..or Knotes  .. notes.. I Hope they normally won't .. dissapear..21:42
valoriethe best advice is always to make a backup before upgrading21:42
valoriein the case of FF there is a plugin for that, I believe21:43
valoriefor knotes, perhaps you'll find the files in ~/.kde/share/apps21:43
robotdevilgo to /home and use your file manager to show hidden files and make a backup of all the hidden files somewhere, you other notes should be saved in plain sight (and be fine)21:43
valoriefind the notes, and make a backup21:43
robotdevilif you backup those hidden files you always have something to go back too, and doesnt take as long a regular backup, not that you shouldnt anyway21:45
robotdevil I usually try to wait for a X.X.X release before even doing a fresh install21:47
billy_Thunks for the advices  .. Valorie .. robotangel;) ... & ikonia ..21:51
billy_I passed 13.04  .. I can wait for the next x.x.1  ;)21:52
valorieyou are most welcome; come back anytime and ask for help, billy_21:52
billy_What "Regular" backup programm do u use..??  I haven't checked for 6 months maybe.. but then.. i couldn't find somethink trustworth.. Any proposition for a backup prgrm  ??21:52
valorieI use rsync21:52

valorieonce you get your commands set up just the way you like them, you can even script it21:54
valorieI don't21:54
valoriejust copy/paste21:54
valoriebackup drives are getting bigger and cheaper all the tiem21:54
valorietime21:54
billy_Even for the System Files..??..??  Copy-Paste the hole HD u mean..   ??  ??21:55
qdataMy primary drive is SSD and secondary drive is 750Gb mechanical. I have OS installed on /dev/sda1 and boot from a parted magic CD and utilize Clonezilla to store a backup image of /dev/sda1 on the big drive; this way I can always roll back to a 'known good' if some update or other change goes bad21:55
valorieno, I mean copy/paste the rsync commands21:56
valorieI never back up system files, no21:57
valoriebut if you need a really stable system, it sounds like qdata has it covered21:57
valorieI've heard a lot of good stuff about clonezilla21:58

keithzg_genii: For the record, I stepped away from my computer and it hung again while I was gone (no display this time, so no kernel message). I've now updated the firmware on the SSD, we'll see if *that* works but then I'm outta guesses.22:42

minteriorI would like to create several encrypted folders mounted as ecryptfs on a different partition than /home. I got it with sudo, but I would like to know if can be accomplished without sudo on login time, the same way as K/Ubuntu does with encrypted user home directories. Is it possible? Is there any guide to follow? Thank you in advance!23:43

KinasisDrummerDoes anybody here use the Kdbg GUI/front-end for gdb?23:47
valoriehuh, I've never heard of it23:48
KinasisDrummerI just installed it on Kubuntu 14.04 and it appears to be broken! :/ Not sure what to do to fix it!23:48
valorieI just always run it in the cli23:48
valorieKinasisDrummer: please ask in #kde - presuming it is a KDE project23:48
KinasisDrummerMe too, but figured I'd give it a shot23:48
valorienot sure, since I've never heard of it23:48

valoriewe supply it, I guess23:49
KinasisDrummerrunning it via the menu does nothing, but running from the CLI gives the following message (many times) before it finally dies:23:50
KinasisDrummerMNG error 11: Function is invalid at this point; chunk MHDR; subcode 0:023:51
valorieyowza23:51
valorieI've never seen that one23:51
KinasisDrummerLooks like its a problem with libmng - at a guess!23:51
valoriemaybe they'll send you to #kde-devel, but start with #kde23:52
valoriealthough it is night in Germany, so could be slow23:52
valorieoops, and dinner time here.....23:52
KinasisDrummerOK, I'll ask there! Perhaps I'll leave it for the morning!23:52
