SamwiseGamgeeWhat is the latest stable release for Kubuntu?00:27
SamwiseGamgeeShould I install Kubuntu 12.04 onto my old AMD Athlon PC?00:27
keithzg_Latest stable is 14.0400:28
SamwiseGamgeeIs it called Kubuntu 14.04?  Is this a reliable operating system?00:28
keithzg_It is called "Kubuntu", the version is "14.04", which corresponds to 2014-04 (the release date). It's pretty reliable, I run it on all my desktops and laptops, but as with any software YMMV.00:29
SamwiseGamgeeYMMV?00:33
SamwiseGamgeeWhat does YMMV mean?00:33
keithzg_It means the work day is done, I'm going to go get a beer :P00:35
DarthFrogSamwiseGamgee:  Your Mileage May Vary.00:43
SamwiseGamgeeyou mean how long it will last?00:44
SamwiseGamgeeWhose mileage?  What mileage?  Mileage for what?00:44
DarthFrogNo, not at all.  It's a cultural reference to automobile commercials on TV.00:44
DarthFrogAds used to proclaim mileage in their ads but qualified their claims by YMMV.00:45
SamwiseGamgeeOh, depending on how you treat your car and how you drive, your mileage will vary, right?00:45
DarthFrogAnd that's been picked up in popular culture.00:45
DarthFrogCorrect.  The car companies always advertise the absolute best but then qualify it. :-)00:46
SamwiseGamgeeI see how that relates to a PC, but not to software00:46
DarthFrog!YMMV00:46
ubottuymmv is short for "Your mileage may vary". It means that someone else's experience with compatibility, performance etc. may not necessarily match yours. Also see !wfm00:46
SamwiseGamgeeok, that makes more sense00:46
DarthFrogAs I said, it's pop culture and is used everywhere. :-)00:47
SamwiseGamgeeok, thanks00:47
DarthFrognp00:47
SamwiseGamgeethat makes sense now00:47
DarthFrogI take it you're not a native English speaker?00:47
SamwiseGamgeeIḿ Canadian00:48
DarthFrogQuebecois?00:48
DarthFrogI'm in BC.00:48
SamwiseGamgeeI don´t watch much TV00:48
DarthFrogI see.  You have a life, instead? :-)00:49
LelouchVIBrittanGuys can i ask 1 question?00:49
DarthFrog!ask00:49
SamwiseGamgeeIt looks like the best version of Kubuntu to install is Kubuntu 14.04 LTS Trusty Tahr, is that right?00:49
ubottuPlease don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-) See also !patience00:49
DarthFrogSamwiseGamgee: I really like 14.04.  WFM. YMMV. :-)00:50
DarthFrogAnd it is a LTS.00:50
DarthFrog!LTS00:50
ubottuLTS means Long Term Support. Until 12.04 LTS versions of Ubuntu were supported for 3 years on the desktop, and 5 years on the server; since 12.04 (Precise Pangolin) LTS versions will be supported for 5 years on the desktop and server. The latest LTS version of Ubuntu is !Trusty (Trusty Tahr 14.04)00:50
SamwiseGamgeeHow many GB of hard disk space do I need for Kubuntu 14.04?  is 40 GB enough?00:50
LelouchVIBrittani am not familiar with software and i have Windows 8.1 and i am thinking about installing Kubuntu 14.04..Is it a good idea or not?00:50
DarthFrogLelouchVIBrittan: It's a brilliant idea!00:50
DarthFrogSamwiseGamgee: You don't give enough information to provide a proper answer.  What do you want to do with the OS?00:51
SamwiseGamgeeWhere can I download Kubuntu 14.04 from?00:51
DarthFrog!download00:51
ubottuKubuntu can be downloaded in various formats from here: http://kubuntu.org/download.php00:51
SamwiseGamgeeI will be using it for movies, Netflix, music, photography and word processing00:52
LelouchVIBrittanYou know daily use i am not a crazy gamer i just play 2-3 games only00:52
DarthFrogOK, 40 GB seems small if you're going to be filling it up with A/V multimedia.00:52
DarthFrogThe OS only needs 10 GB to be comfortable.  The rest is for your stuff.00:53
SamwiseGamgeeI will be hooking up another hard drive with circa 120 GB later, but right now the system drive only has 40 GB, is that enough to test it?00:53
DarthFrogFor testing?  Plenty!00:53
DarthFrogWhat CPU, how much RAM?00:53
SamwiseGamgeeItś an AMD Athlon, the processor00:54
Chaser!netflix00:54
ubottuIf you use Netflix, there is an unofficial solution for using it in Ubuntu detailed in http://www.compholio.com/netflix-desktop/ - bug reports in https://bugs.launchpad.net/netflix-desktop00:54
DarthFrogLelouchVIBrittan: You can install Kubuntu 14.04 along side of Windows and choose which one to run when you boot the machine.  Kubuntu will install a boot manager (called GRUB) which will allow you to pick  and choose.00:54
SamwiseGamgeeAMD Athlon XP processor 1700+ Desktop CPU00:55
DarthFrogAmount of RAM?00:55
SamwiseGamgeeAthlon XP Thoroughbred A/B Model 800:55
DarthFrogThat's not RAM (memory).00:55
SamwiseGamgeeIt has about 500 MB of RAM00:55
DarthFrogOK, nowadays that's a low specification machine.00:56
SamwiseGamgeethe processor is x86 family 6, Model 800:56
DarthFrogI think you might find Kubuntu runs uncomfortably on that machine.  using one of the other derivatives would work better on that machine.00:57
SamwiseGamgeeI have a KT3 Ultra2 motherboard that is VIA KT333 chipset based00:57
DarthFrog!lubuntu00:57
ubottulubuntu is Ubuntu with LXDE instead of !GNOME as desktop environment, which makes it extremely lightweight. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu - /join #lubuntu for lubuntu support.00:57
DarthFrogLubuntu, rather than Kubuntu, is what I would suggest.00:57
SamwiseGamgeeyou mean Kubuntu 12.04 would work better for this PC?00:57
DarthFrogKubuntu is more heavyweight.00:58
DarthFrogNo.00:58
DarthFrogI mean that Lubuntu would work better.00:58
DarthFrogDon't get me wrong, that machine will run Kubuntu.  But you won't be happy with it; it'll be quite slow.00:59
SamwiseGamgeeokay, so ubuntu would be better?00:59
DarthFrogEspecially since you want to do multimedia.00:59
DarthFrogNope.00:59
DarthFrogLubuntu or Xubuntu.00:59

Unit193What type of Multimedia?  There is UbuntuStudio too.01:00
SamwiseGamgeethanks01:00
SamwiseGamgeeJust playing music and Netflix, moslty, and movies01:00
Unit193Ah, so not that then.01:00
SamwiseGamgeeSurfing the web, downloading stuff from the web, photography, music, DVD movies and Netflix01:01
SamwiseGamgeeDownloading small files, nothing illegal or pirated01:01
DarthFrogUbuntu is based (loosely) on GNOME, reworked into Unity.  It'll experience the same issues as Kubuntu.  In a nutshell, your machine is old, slow and memory impovrished.  Any full-featured desktop environment will be painfully slow on it.01:02
SamwiseGamgeeI was running Windows XP on that machine, which I call Fangorn, and it seems fast enough for my purposes01:03
Unit193500MB of ram?  Yes, Lubuntu, or just plain Openbox.01:03
DarthFrogWindows XP is 12 years old now.01:03
SamwiseGamgeeWell, it had 768 MB of RAM before I had to replace the motherboard01:04
DarthFrogSamwiseGamgee:  Go ahead and install Kubuntu on it.  It will run (well, walk) Kubuntu, no question.01:04
DarthFrogBut you will have swapping.01:04
SamwiseGamgeeActually, there may be a way to get it up to 768 MB with Windows, but I´m not sure about overclocking with Kubuntu01:05
DarthFrogPlease keep in mind that modern OS's are built for modern hardware with modern resources.01:05
SamwiseGamgeeI think my brother had overclocked the 768 MB of RAM from 500, but I´m not sure01:05
DarthFrogUmm, that makes no sense. :-)01:06
DarthFrogThat's like saying you overclocked $20 to $50. :-)01:06
SamwiseGamgeeYeah, it doesn´t make sense to me either.  May be I can´t get more than 500 MB of RAM, but when I was checking the stats, I saw sth about overclocking to 768 MB of RAM01:07
SamwiseGamgeeI saw that when I examined the stats on my Fangorn PC after I installed the new motherboard01:07
SamwiseGamgeein most places it said 500 MB of RAM, but in some places it said 768 MB of RAM01:08
SamwiseGamgeeanyway, letś just assume it´s 500 MB of RAM01:08
DarthFrogIt doesn't make sense.  500 MB of RAM is a physical quanity, you can hold it in your hand.  To go to 768 MB, you have to add another physical stick of RAM.01:09
DarthFrogClocking is the speed you run it at.01:09
SamwiseGamgeeWell, I put all the memory sticks in from the old motherboard01:09
SamwiseGamgeeand all I got was 500 MB01:09
DarthFrogAnd when you boot the machine, the POST routine will report the amount of RAM installed.01:10
DarthFrogThen you have 512 MB RAM.01:10
SamwiseGamgeeOh shit, one of the memory sticks may have got damaged when the PSU blew up, it also damaged some of my hard drives01:10
DarthFrogWhich is a small amount nowadays.01:10
SamwiseGamgeeBut everything else is working.  so far, I only found evidence of damage to the hard drives01:11
SamwiseGamgeeis Kubuntu 12.04 lighter than Kubuntu 14.04?01:12
DarthFrogThe PSU is the one place you do not want to cheap out.  When you buy a PSU, buy a good brand.  And you don't need a big one:  You can pick up a 450 watt Corsair (very good PSU) for under $50.01:12
DarthFrogNo, it's not.  It's just older.01:12
SamwiseGamgeeOk, so should I try installing Kubuntu 12.04?01:13
SamwiseGamgeeMy motherboard is called MSI MS-6380E01:13
DarthFrogThe 12 in 12.04 refers to the year of release: 2012.  And the .04 refers to the month of release, i.e. the 4th month, April.  So 12.04 was released in April 2012 and 14.04 was released in April 2014.01:14
SamwiseGamgeeWoops, I mean Kubuntu 14.0401:14
DarthFrogThat's the only version you should be considering.01:14
SamwiseGamgeeWhere can I download it from?  I will make an ISO on a DVD01:14
DarthFrog!download01:15
ubottuKubuntu can be downloaded in various formats from here: http://kubuntu.org/download.php01:15
SamwiseGamgeeOk, Iĺl download the full version for DVD, right?01:15
DarthFrogUp to you.01:15

DarthFrogAll that applies to Kubuntu, too.01:16
DarthFrogSamwiseGamgee:  In the Installation link above, you'll want to read the section on Minimal Installations.01:21
SamwiseGamgeefor Kubuntu or Ubuntu?01:21
DarthFrogEither/both.01:21
SamwiseGamgeeYou said Ubuntu would work better, but I¨m used to using Kubuntu, how different is Ubuntu?01:22
DarthFrogThere's not much difference between Ubuntu & Kubuntu, other than the desktop environment.  Ubuntu uses Unity (which they derived from GNOME), Kubuntu uses the far superior (no prejudice here!) KDE.01:22
DarthFrogI said Lubuntu would work better, not Ubuntu.01:23
DarthFrog!lubuntu01:23
ubottulubuntu is Ubuntu with LXDE instead of !GNOME as desktop environment, which makes it extremely lightweight. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu - /join #lubuntu for lubuntu support.01:23
SamwiseGamgeeHow different is Lubuntu from KDE´s Kubuntu?01:23
DarthFrogIt uses LXDE instead of KDE.01:23
DarthFrogLXDE is lightweight.  KDE is full featured.01:24
DarthFrogBut not lightweight. :-)01:24
SamwiseGamgeeI like Kubuntu, I´ve been using it for about 4 or 5 years now01:24
DarthFrogThen why are you asking all these beginner questions?01:24
SamwiseGamgeeBut mostly just for Web browsing and music01:25
SamwiseGamgeeBecause I am a Windows guy01:25
SamwiseGamgeeMostly just web browsing for school stuff01:26
SamwiseGamgeeand email01:26
DarthFrogAny system would be fine for such use.01:26
SamwiseGamgeeWindows 8 is too expensive01:26
SamwiseGamgeeLinux is free01:27
DarthFrogInstall Lubuntu, firefox and thunderbird.  You'll have what you need.01:27
DarthFrogLinux is free, in both senses of the word.01:27
DarthFrogAnd doesn't want to limit you.01:27
SamwiseGamgeeBut I want to take Linux to the next level and start using it for movies, DVDs and more music01:27
DarthFrogWatching/listening  or producing?01:28
SamwiseGamgeejust watching and listening01:28
DarthFrogthen you'll be quite happy with Linux.01:28
SamwiseGamgeeDVD movies and Netflix01:28
DarthFrogBut why don't you update your hardware?01:29
SamwiseGamgeetoo much money01:29
SamwiseGamgeebut I may buy a new hard drive01:29
SamwiseGamgeeif itś not too expensive01:29
DarthFrogHard drives are inexpensive.  How about an SSD instead?01:30
DarthFrogIf your motherboard does SATA.01:30
DarthFrogSSDs have really come down in price.01:30
SamwiseGamgeeyeah, I got a new SSD for my Pavilion Pc01:30
SamwiseGamgeeYeah, I found one SATA cord, but the rest are IDE01:30
SamwiseGamgeeAll the ports are IDE01:31
SamwiseGamgeebut the connector for the SATA cord did not look like it was for hard drives, this motherboard is 10 years old01:32
DarthFrogSATA is SATA.01:32
SamwiseGamgeeI think there´s a section on SATA in the motherboard manual01:32
DarthFrogOK, well have fun.  I'm off.01:33

Chasersorry01:41
SamwiseGamgeeWhat is swapping and why is it bad?01:45
DarthFrogSwapping is using your hard drive for memory instead of RAM.  It's bad because it's about 100,000X slower.02:03
DarthFrogAnd that is not an exaggeration.02:03
DarthFrogSwapping is good because your system won't crash with out of memory errors.  But if your system swaps routinely, it needs more RAM.02:04
SamwiseGamgeeWow, I thought you had left, DarthFrog02:23
SamwiseGamgeeOh, so Lubuntu requires less swapping02:25
DarthFrogDepends upon how you use it.02:42
DarthFrogBut, yes.  That's part and parcel of what we mean when we say lightweight.02:43
DarthFrogI wouldn't be surprised if your Fangorn system wasn't swapping before KDE finished loading.  And if so, you'll find the system slow and unresponsive.02:45

emmaim doing a distribution upgrade and it is saying 'about 5 hours remaining' does that seem right?11:30
roland_upgrading from 12.04 to 14.04 took about 5 hours11:32
lordievaderemma: Like TheFakeazneD525 says, that is only possible when 14.04.1 is released.11:33
roland_Hi. I updated my kubuntu installation to 14.04, and now I'm having strange issues ater laptop wakes up from sleep.... login screen does not show, only the wallpaper... have to restart kdm to get back to working system...  probably something to do with this, but i'm unable to see if this fix is pushed to users....11:34

ubottuKDE bug 314663 in locker-qml "Input freezes after locking screen if not using the Desktop Widgets locker" [Critical,Confirmed]11:34
TheFakeazneD525Hmm, I recommend switching to lightdm for now, I'm not too knowledgeable about KDM11:35
emmalordievader: im confused why you say its only possible then. Because im doing something right now11:36
emmaI did alt+f2 and typed in : kubuntu-devel-release-upgrade11:36
emmaand it is doing something11:36
emmawhat is it doing?11:36
lordievaderroland_: Precise was the last version where kdm was used by default, everything after uses LightDM, I'd say switch to LightDM and see if the problem persists.11:37
lordievaderemma: do-release-upgrade will not show Trusty until 14.04.1 is released (and the lts path is chosen).11:38
roland_lordievader: sry, my bad, restart lightdm11:38
roland_kdm said, unknown instance11:38
lordievaderemma: I get the feeling kubuntu-devel-release-upgrade will upgrade you to Utopic (the devel part)11:38

lordievaderrajaniemi: Do you have a Kubuntu support question?11:41
roland_lordievader: which login screen are you using?11:41
lordievaderroland_: LightDM under Saucy, KDM under Gentoo.11:42
rajaniemiI had to hardcode a remote K-line trigger for didactic purposes11:42
roland_lordievader: what is the screen locker type? simple/widget?11:43
lordievaderroland_: Yes, simple.11:44
rajaniemiwould you make a martyr for the sake of protocal?11:45
roland_lordievader: strange, I read somewere, simple locker causes this, and the fix was to change to widget11:45
roland_or add some translucency exeption for some applicaiton11:45
lordievaderroland_: Note I run Saucy, it may just be a Trusty specific bug.11:46

safridzalhi, this is my fresh install kubuntu 14.04.. i have problem with GTK apps like xchat and libreoffice.. I cannot adjust the font.. it always like "ubuntu 8" font even after i change to ubuntu 12 on system setting16:07
safridzalgtk2 and gtk 3 -engine-oxygen is installed16:07
Gregor3000hello people! does anyoen have any idea why samba share would be loading super slow. it loads file by file from raspberry pi. it sued to be quite fast. at first i though something is wrong with external drive on the pi (NTFS), but after doing checkdisk on it it turns out all is ok. i then tried to use filezilla (sftp rather than samba) and it was fast. very fast.16:10
safridzalI get it working.. just force the font to get aliased.. the default it system setting..16:15
BluesKajGregor3000, scp/ssh is also fast if you don't mind using the terminal16:19
Gregor3000no, i just need to move files arround which is easier and IMO faster done with some file manager than through terminal.16:20
Gregor3000i know i connect with SSH if i need to do somethign on it.16:20
Gregor3000something other than just moving files.16:21
Gregor3000i forgot to say i have OpenELEC on pi if it matters. and it's not the latest version. perhaps i should upgrade it. i haven't decided to upgrade since this one is working well otherwise.16:22
yrussHi! Upgraded to 14.04 from 13.04 and once in two days system freezes. GUI freezes. I can drag mouse but keyboard doesn't respond at all. Even capslock LED not lighting when i press it.  Ram is 4gb, standard inTel card. Never freezed on 13.04. Sysrq+RSEIUB works. Any solutions?16:23
safridzalquestion again.. i've install mscore ttf font,, but libreoffice still use libresansserif font as default.. is there a way to make libre office use times new roman as default font?16:24

yrussExactly this Guide17:09
BluesKajyruss, ok that's fine, but did you update and upgrade 12.04 packages before upgrading to 14.04/17:10
yrussWell keeping in my that i upgraded from 13.04 - certainly i'm not :)17:11
yrussIt was 1304 -> 1310 -> 1404 kinda sequence17:12
BluesKajthen you should have said so17:13
BluesKajdid upgrade both 13.04 and 13.10 packages ?17:15
yrussi said it in my first message slightly and btw there's no another way to upgrade 13,04 to 14,04 :)17:15
BluesKajoh yes there is, some change their sources.list debs to the new OS and try to update/upgrade while skipping an OS...I've seen it done and makes an awful mess17:17
yrussEverything is upgrade as it should be - there's no need to search the cause in the upgrade it self - i do believe it's Xorg ro Kernel problem. I posted this if somebody seen the problem cause it's very specific i believe - GUI and keyboard freezed but mouse works17:18
yrussmore common problem when everything freezes or nothing freezes at all i believe:)17:19
BluesKajwell, I have some errands to run.... BBL17:19
