jubo2Is there a straight-forward way to enable both ethernet to hardline and WiFi interfaces and instruct programs to use one or other interface for their internetworking needs ?11:41
Walex2jubo2: "straightforward" for some and not so "straightforward" for others...11:42
jubo2I mean I have a HSPA+ modem with li-ion battery, WiFi hotspot with minimal ui11:42
jubo2Walex2: I've been using Linuxen since '9611:42
jubo2So I know some but not very much11:42
Walex2jubo2: lots of people have 20-30-40-50 years experience and don't understand much of it :-) and not just in IT11:42
Walex2jubo2: the big question is whether the wired and WiFi subnets are the same or distinct.11:43
jubo2distinct11:43
Walex2jubo2: if they are distinct as they should you can use routing metrics and routing rules to put some traffic on one and some on another.11:43
jubo2the ethernet goes to ADSL box and the WiFi goes to HSPA+ modem11:44
jubo2Walex2: that's not straightforward to me.11:44
jubo2Walex2: where can I configure this "routing metrics"11:44
jubo2/etc/something/something ?11:45
Walex2jubo2: and how do you expect to do it other by routijng then? :-) You have somehow to classify traffic in "this goes here" and "this goes there".11:45
Walex2jubo2: usually you attach them to default routes wherever they are configured.11:45
jubo2Yeah.. That is what I want11:45
Walex2jubo2: also most network configuration systems allow you to add static routes and you can attach metrics to them11:46
jubo2I think I'm going to get the wireless 3.9G modem ( it's at 144€ /w 24 month interest free plan )11:46
alvinThere's also the (relatively new) Multipath TCP, but that requires the server to understand it too.11:46
Walex2jubo2: as a rule buying the modem outright is a lot cheaper than buying it via a plan...11:46
jubo2I just want irc to not squeal that I'm at my hardline location11:46

jubo2Walex2: what's SCTP11:49
Walex2yossarianuk: you have to ask you MS-AD contact to create a "host account" for you, then you get the host keytab as usual, and then you can authenticate11:49
BluesKajjubo2, just ask to cloak your nick at #freenode if you don't want irc to see your connection11:49
jubo2BluesKaj: doesn't work.. it just produces 3 lines of garbage to the channel: #1 joined #2 left for cloak change #joined with cloak on11:50
Walex2jubo2: a new IP-based protocol with a number of improvements over TCP. But while it is widely implemented nobody uses it (usually chicken-and-egg)11:50
yossarianukWalex2: cheers - as mentioned the only way I have connected is via opensuse/yast - just a matter of 1. Open YAST and go Network Services -> Windows Domain Membership 2. enter domain 3. enter domain manager credentials11:50
Walex2yossarianuk: that's cheating :-)11:51
jubo2Walex2: ahaa i c. I'm placing my bets on http://MaidSafe.net to provide me with storage superior to legacy cloud systems for tens and tens of years11:51
Walex2jubo2: that's optimistic :-)11:51
jubo2hell.. I think it likely that many municipalities and even whole state start to rely on the MaidSafe as their primare storage media11:51
BluesKajjubo2, that's odd11:51
jubo2the OS'es, the apps and the data can persist for hundereds of years in the MaidSafe network(s) if the "Tragedy of Commons" or some other threat does not materialize11:52
BluesKajjubo2, perhaps choose some different servers as default for your freenode connections11:53
jubo2Check the 3-page paper on Self-Authentication -> https://github.com/maidsafe/MaidSafe/wiki/unpublished_papers/SelfAuthentication.pdf <- completely removes the need for the 3rd party to authenticate self to network and gain access to all keys and all encrypted chunks11:54
jubo2pretty cool stuff ehh ?11:54
jubo2MaidSafe cannot be DDoS per se11:55
jubo2The optimistic routing will route around any efforts to DDoS11:55

Guest22449no, just busybox13:15
Walex2Guest22449: it can depend on very many things13:15
Walex2Guest22449: it is very unlikely that the filesystem UUID just changed by itself.13:15
Guest22449Walex2: what do you mean13:16
Walex2Guest22449: also IIRC the UUID that matters is the one in the 'initrd', which is a pity.13:16
Guest22449i ran fsck -y /dev/sda5 and that fixed some time issues, but still its busybox only13:17
Walex2Guest22449: if your problem is that the booting system cannot mount the root filetree, because it cannot find a filetree with the right UUID, then changing it will work.13:17
Walex2Guest22449: UUID is one of the ways in which the booting system can identify which filetree is the root one13:17

vbgunzI have this interesting problem after just updating my 14.04 system. For some reason Kate is starting up with the system and I have to kill it because it won't let the system finish starting. I don't know why Kate is starting, I have a blank clean session set to start at the beginning of every login. I shouldn't be launching Kate any other way but insist on starting with the system and freezing everything in the process16:10
vbgunzI'm guessing not enough people here figured out why kate is starting up with their system and it's for some reason completely locking them out. at least I'm first :)16:15

SamwiseGamgeeHow can I see the size of the folders in my Hhome directory?  Can Dolphin do that?18:53
SamwiseGamgeeWhen I use dolphin, it shows the number of items in each folder, but the size in MiB does not make sense.  The files sizes it shows are always too small.  It looks like the size it always shows is not the actual size but only the size of the biggest file.18:58

bpromptbear in mind that computers do not use the metric system for their base numbering... they use 102419:05
SamwiseGamgeeSo, I´m dealing mostly with Megabytes and Gigabytes19:05

bpromptso when you do the conversion using the 1024 base for the value provided in bytes, you'll notice dolphin is likely giving the correct value19:07
SamwiseGamgeeSorry, I thought 1 megabyte is 1,024 KB, but 1 MiB is 1,000 kilobytes19:07
bprompthmm the former19:07
bprompt1,024Kbs === 1Mb19:07

bpromptbear in mind that computers do not use the metric system for their base numbering... they use 102419:08
SamwiseGamgeeDolphin is showing memory sizes using this notation:  MiB, KiB19:08
bpromptand yes, I'm aware that HD manufacturers use the metric when they ship HDD, which really doesn't make much sense to me, I guess is just a gimmick to make it sound bigger than what it actually is19:09
SamwiseGamgeeAnd I thought that is the new system that is metric, meaning based on powers of ten19:09
bpromptSamwiseGamgee:    so you'd rather have "bytes" showing?19:09
SamwiseGamgeeI´m used to the old binary system19:09
SamwiseGamgeeI have always assumed that 1 KB is 1,024 bytes, one MB is 1,024 KB, and one GB is 1,024 MB19:11
bpromptSamwiseGamgee:     still so in computing measurements19:11
SamwiseGamgeeDoes Dolphin use the metric system or the binary system when it shows 1 MiB?  Like how many bytes is 1 MiB according to Dolphin?19:12
bprompt1,024Kbs === 1Mb19:12
bpromptSamwiseGamgee:     I do not recall that ever changing for computer standards or any ISO changes to that effect19:13

bpromptand yes, I'm aware that HD manufacturers use the metric when they ship HDD, which really doesn't make much sense to me, I guess is just a gimmick to make it sound bigger than what it actually is19:13
checksumJackUse the binary prefixes19:13
checksumJack1 KiB = 2^2019:14
CodePulsarDoes Kubuntu 14.04 come with a cron job for SSD TRIM when enabling encryption at installation time ?19:14
checksumJack1 KB = 10^219:14
SamwiseGamgeeOh, I see, MiB and KiB are the binary system.  They added the letter ¨i¨ to show you that they are still using the binary system.  if you take out the i, then you are going metric, to powers of ten, right?19:15
checksumJackyes19:16
checksumJacksorry it is 1 KiB = 2^10 not 2^2019:17
checksumJackMiB = 2^2019:17
SamwiseGamgeeTherefore, 1 MiB = 1,048,576 bytes, or 1,024 KiB, or 2>20 bytes, or 1,024>2 bytes19:18

bpromptSamwiseGamgee:    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kibibyte19:18

SamwiseGamgeeNow I can try the memory size commands, thanks again19:19
bprompthehe19:20
SamwiseGamgeeI already read that article last year19:20
SamwiseGamgeethe reason I got confused is they changed the meaning of the old binary terms.  Terms we had been using for years.  that is very confusing19:22
bprompt"they" changed?19:23
bpromptthe iso?   ansi?19:23
checksumJackthe unix command du or free print power of 1024. If you add --si it uses power of 100019:25
bpromptvendors like hdd vendors, ship their product using the metric system, as I said, makes no sense because, it claims 1TB, or 1,204Mbs   but once you stick in the computer, it doesn't show 1terrabyte, it goes below once the conversion goes to 1024, so they really meant     1trillion bytes, wich is not the same as 1terrabyte19:26
SamwiseGamgeeThe people who decided to change the meaning of such commonly used memory terms for so many years, obviously do not understand how human memory works.  Try rewriting the definitions in the Oxford dictionary, too, and see how that affects the memory of English speakers.  That´s a good analogy, I think.19:27
bpromptmore like a marketing gimmick then actual useful information about the product19:27
SamwiseGamgeeDon´t frack with something when it works, is my motto19:27
bpromptSamwiseGamgee:     btw, that's no true of memory vendors, if you buy a 2Gbs ddr3 memory stick, labeled so in the stick, you put in the machine, it shows 2Gbs19:28
bpromptwhere I see that is mostly the hdd vendors19:28
SamwiseGamgeeSpeaking of memory, I need to buy some new memory sticks to get more RAM.  Can I get all the info I need to buy the new memory sticks by just reading the label stuck onto my old RAM memory sticks?19:29
checksumJackRAM is labeled as GiB and HDD is labeled as GB.19:30
SamwiseGamgeethese are 10 year old memory sticks19:30
checksumJackSo a 1 Terrabyte hdd is 10^12 Byte and not 2^40 = 1TiB19:30
SamwiseGamgeeOn the ChIPs of each memory stick is written value select CORSAIR VS256MB266 025102719:34
SamwiseGamgeeoh, that´s the label19:34
SamwiseGamgeeon each CHIP is written FB  0247    S80016VH7TW  -7519:35
SamwiseGamgeeMay be I´m getting into a hardware discussion here, sorry19:36
lordievaderSamwiseGamgee: lshw tells you enough, what type, speed, size, etc.19:37
SamwiseGamgeeyou mean my memory sticks?19:38
SamwiseGamgeewhat is lshw?  is that a command?19:38
lordievaderSamwiseGamgee: Yes, it shows what kind of hardware is in your system.19:39
bprompt RAM is labeled as GiB and HDD is labeled as GB.    <---- yes, but that's just a marketing pun, because when people buy it, they expect it to be THAT size in the machine for their storage19:39
SamwiseGamgeethe memory sticks I am replacing are in another PC19:39
bpromptthat's kinda going to buy a mouse for the computer, and when you get home and open the box, a rodent comes out it19:40
bpromptsure, they can claim, " well, ahhh you asked for a mouse"    but that's just a pun19:41
SamwiseGamgeeyeah, it´s confusing when one term can have two very different meanings19:41
bpromptno computer hardware that I know of uses metric system for storage, so the units labeled on those hdd are misleading19:42
SamwiseGamgeeCan you access those UNIX commands on any 10-year old PC?  I have never tried to access the UNIX commands on my old Athlon PC which has a VIA KT333 Chipset Based KT3 Ultra2 series motherboard19:45
SamwiseGamgeeFor exammple, is lshw a UNIX command, can I call it that?19:47
bpromptSamwiseGamgee:    lshw?   not sure.... 10 years... that means 2004..... not sure if it was there19:47
bpromptSamwiseGamgee:19:48
SamwiseGamgeethe manual for my motherboard was published in June 200219:48
bpromptSamwiseGamgee:     "dmesg"   would be there, and that gives the hardware listing19:48
SamwiseGamgeeDoes that mean my motherboard was manufactured before June 2002?19:49
bpromptlikely  yes19:50
bpromptor before, depends19:50
SamwiseGamgeeWow, that means my motherboard is 12 years old, at least19:50
bpromptyes, doesn't mean is horrible either19:51
bprompt"best" is always relative19:52

SamwiseGamgeeIt´s hard to read the writing on the receipt, but it looks like my brother purchased this motherboard January 6, 200219:56
SamwiseGamgeeThat does not make sense, how could he get a user manual published five months after he bought the motherboard, if the user manual came in the same box as the motherboard?19:59
CodePulsarDoes the section "For ecrypted partitions" from http://www.webupd8.org/2013/01/enable-trim-on-ssd-solid-state-drives.html apply to Kubuntu 14.04 as well ?19:59
TBotNikAll: Helping me on my drive sizing script THANKS!  Final working code at: http://paste.debian.net/103633/19:59
SamwiseGamgeeis there a way to use AMIBIOS to get to a UNIX command terminal?20:01
SamwiseGamgeelordievader´s command is the only one that worked, thanks20:39
SamwiseGamgeethey told me lshw tells you all about your memory sticks, but no OS is installed in my old Athlon PC now, so can I use AMIBIOS to get to a command terminal?20:43
SamwiseGamgeelordievader20:43
