=== moo is now known as Guest32483 [00:49] hello whats up [00:50] i having alittle trouble into makeing a sym link can any one help me :) [01:02] HOLA [01:02] iam having alittle trouble into makeing a sym link can any one help me :) [01:06] what's the issue? === Lcawte is now known as Lcawte|Away [02:41] hello there [02:41] i want help to make symlink [02:55] hello there [02:55] i want little help to make sym link [04:46] morning you lot [05:41] morning all [06:10] Morning all [06:53] :D [08:00] morning [08:04] morning bashrc [08:05] morning bashrc / MooDoo [08:08] I should really go take my allergy pills [08:08] hayfever? [08:08] yeah [08:08] aha [08:09] I was virtually useless two days ago due to it [08:09] then finally realised I have pills [08:11] Hah, finally realised AlanBell's real reason for the Rasberry pi project, he's turning the chickens into unmanned drones https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/navio-autopilot-shield-for-raspberry-pi [08:15] Good morning all; happy World Environment Day! :-D [08:16] morning JamesTait [08:16] ;) [08:29] Good morning peeps :) [08:31] morning bigcalm [08:31] o/ [08:32] 6-9am has to be the strangest shift ever [08:32] anyone know what is up with my swap? http://i.imgur.com/xOQhwMj.png [08:33] 100% used, 30GB ram free [08:36] morning folks, im' in a bit of a pickle today, got an update i think in the last day or two, when i boot up thismorning,, unity isn't appearing, [08:37] I get my wallpaper, and no titlebar, dock or anything [08:37] i can ctrl+alt+t and get a chromelses window up. [08:39] I have been using bumblebee/stable and edgers ppa's to get the optimus setup working. [08:39] i'm in a tty using tmux to work for now :( [08:44] purge the edgers ppa? [08:44] and see if it works with the repo packages only? [08:44] (morning btw) [08:45] :) yeh, was just thinking that. [08:45] i'm a little googless right now, how do i purge a ppa out of the rpeo's? [08:46] or is just rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/xorg-edgers-ppa* [08:46] ? [08:51] No [08:51] no? uh oh? [08:51] One moment [08:52] i've already mv'd the xor-edgers repo out of my repo sources.d [08:52] did apt-get clean && apt-get update [08:54] https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa [08:54] "To revert to official packages, install the ppa-purge package and run "sudo ppa-purge xorg-edgers". Note: This currently has issues in oneiric because ppa-purge there does not work with multiarch. ppa-purge packages from this PPA do purge correctly on precise and newer." [08:56] now just purged bujblebee, primus{-libs{:amd64|i386|-ia32}} and nvidia-{libopencl1-|opencl-icd|settings-}331 [08:57] Install nvidia-current and go from there [08:58] had to install the ppa-purge command [08:58] i'm on 13.10 i should add [08:58] Ah [08:58] Move to 14.04 [08:58] It'll work a lot better [08:58] I'd like to as soon as i have a break [08:58] might get to it this weekend. [08:59] i just need to get back to work for today [09:00] just get my video card working again, then get an external usb3 disk and backup and do a fresh install [09:00] anyway, to retain my steam library between updates? [09:00] that would be useful. [09:03] ok, i got runningn again without any driver re-install [09:03] what driver am i running on? [09:05] looks like removing nvidia and bumblebee and doing that ppa-purge, it's reverted to likely just the intel driver [09:05] so i have teh intel HD4600 and nvidia GT 750M on the lappy. [09:06] somehow it's running [09:06] how do i even determine what driver it's running? [09:08] that is odd, somehow it's reverted to the intel driver on it's own [09:08] didn't think it could do that without bumblebee [09:09] NET||abuse: i would upgrade to 14.04 rather than re-install. [09:09] hmm, maybe [09:09] would save a bit of hastle [09:09] oh, but the other think is i want to add LUKS encryption to my disk [09:09] or whatever encryption i can that will not break my windows 8 partition too [09:10] the one and only thing i use that partition for is steam games that dont work on linux yet [09:10] eg. Total War Rome II, and Chivalry [09:10] :P [09:10] but need to encrypt my "work" partition asap [09:11] so worth doing a clean install just to get that much done. [09:12] then again, could i be arsed :) [09:13] if the inplace update will work, maybe i'm lazy enough to live with it. [09:17] lsmod | grep drm shpuld show you what modules are loaded to do display [09:17] gives me back drm 297056 6 i915,drm_kms_helper [09:17] so yeh, using the intel driver [09:18] cool now i know. [09:18] so i'm just nvidia'less till i get an optimus /bumblebee setup working again.. [09:18] :( no counterstrike for me [09:19] 14.04 does seem like a good idea [09:19] anyone had any luck with a gnome3 beside unity seutp on 14.04 yet? [09:19] so is the intel (i915) on the moterboard and you also have a nvida card installed? [09:19] want ot switch a bit, [09:19] xplora1a: yeh, it's an optimus configuration [09:19] alot of laptops have this now [09:20] NET||abuse: ok so I am behind the times on that [09:20] you have the haswell intel chipset and the discrete nvidia card, nvidia have supported windows drivers to seamlessly switch up to to nvidia when graphicaly intesive stuff is started, [09:21] bumblebee is the project that does per application switching. [09:21] and primus is the all nvidia all the time tool [09:21] you can boot your whole environment with primus, so everything is on the nvidia card, [09:22] or else you boot on the intel chipset and use optirun (part of bumblebee i beleive) which uses primus as the wrapper to run a single application, so that window only is accellerated on nvidia card [09:22] bbswitch is the mechanism behind it i believe. [09:23] ok just reading http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nvidia_Optimus about this. [09:23] problem i have i think, is that when the nvidia update came in, libGL.so for intel got overwritten by the nvidia version, so when unity tried to run on the intel one, it couldn't get 3d accelleration as it was the wrong libGL [09:23] so I got no unity decoration :( [09:29] morning boys and girls. [09:51] morning sir === Lcawte|Away is now known as Lcawte === alan_g is now known as alan_g|lunch [12:49] morn [12:49] hmm, tabcomplete doesn't work on "morning" :-p [12:50] insert coffee to continue? [12:54] is there a downside to injecting coffee directly into the veins? [12:58] I'm not actually sure. but I did find out you can't sell it as such because there's too much natural variation [12:59] I have before pondered using saline solution instead of water in an espresso machine though. Couldn't come up with a sensible solution that wouldn't cake up the boiler === alan_g|lunch is now known as alan_g [13:39] hey all [15:58] hmm, trying to get a vpn client working for vpnc,, cisco asa 5505 on the server side. [15:59] using vpnc on command line, it asks me for my user password twice. [16:00] not sure what else is going wrong. [16:09] ok, wrote /etc/vpnc/myvpn.conf put the basic values in there, "vpnc-connect myvpn" works [16:09] what's different? [16:24] NET||abuse: having the connection details in a file makes things a lot simpler. I've never had it ask for my password twice [16:25] One does need to be root to make the connection though [16:27] That said, the one VPN that needs vpnc doesn't appear to be working today. I have a feeling my credentials may have been scrubbed from the client's system :) === alan_g is now known as alan_g|EOD [17:11] bug 269904 [17:11] bug 269904 in Compiz "Screen refresh problems with nvidia cards" [Unknown,In progress] https://launchpad.net/bugs/269904 [17:17] those are some pretty old drivers [18:23] Sup [18:24] hello [18:29] ewwo [18:36] that bug above. why does canonical require a cla for compiz? I thought that was open source [18:39] my point being that anyone can add code to compiz but canonical won't benefit unless each author accepts the cla? won't the compiz authors just say burger off? [18:53] hmm, i'm working on setting up a standard wordpress install on a new 14.04 64-bit server someone has [18:54] so if this time i'll just add their username to the group www-data then chmod g+w to /var/www/html/ (as i see the path has changed since 10.04) that'll be fine right? [18:54] though, technically i only need to change the group permissions to add write permissions to .../wp-content/ ? :) [19:01] no ide [19:01] a [19:01] O_o [19:01] L) [19:01] :) [19:04] XD [19:04] ah well, i shall endeavour [19:12] daftykins, that should be fine [19:12] it's what I tend to do too [19:13] Monotoko: thanks :) i have this friend with a paid-for wordpress theme, which in the past seemed to have issues performing this auto gallery-image resizing [19:13] as long as i create wp-content/uploads and apply permissions such that his user and www-data can both read+write i'd hope to not trip up [19:13] but we shall see how it goes, shortly [19:13] ooh-err 8pm already [19:28] wait... /var/www/html/index.html is owned by root yet displays, heh [19:28] interesting development [19:30] daftykins o+r [19:30] did i mix up group and world? [19:30] surely g+w adds write permissions to the group? [19:30] yes [19:31] you said that index.html is viewable. that means it's world readable or at least readable to www-data [19:31] oic sir [19:31] yes it is indeed, looks to be 644 [19:32] all the wordpress files are now in, i've changed those to www-data:www-data and they're 644 too [19:32] does that sound wise? [19:37] seems ok to me [19:44] my google cloud sql seems to have locked me out [19:44] D: [20:24] looking at a n export the mysq.user table has had host entries set for "any host" changed to only allow localhost [20:44] diddledan: ! easily fixed then? [20:51] I appear to have fixed it but I'm not sure how [22:00] lol at glastowatch tweets someone asking wherehe can charge an ipad [22:00] bahahaha [22:28] >_< [22:28] if you feel a looming shadow, it's not a cloud - it's a tablet user taking a photo >_< [23:03] hey i get this when nstalling mp3 plugins [23:03] http://pastebin.com/Beh7ac6s [23:03] ubuntu-restricted-extras * [23:04] you already have a package managing program open [23:04] like update manager, synaptic... [23:04] they must be closed to use command line tools [23:05] yosry: ^ [23:05] unfortunly i just opend my pc and nothing is running [23:05] i double checkd [23:05] daftykins: i double cheeked [23:07] hrmm [23:07] can you pastebin "sudo apt-get update" and "sudo apt-get -f install" ? [23:12] apparently not
