yossarianukcan you no longer use init=/bin/bash in order to sert your pass ?07:54
yossarianuk*reset*07:54

valorieyossarianuk: ubuntu is set up to use sudo, rather than a root passw07:58
valorie!sudo07:59
ubottusudo is a command to run command-line programs with superuser privileges ("root") (also see !cli). Look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo for more information. For graphical applications see !gksu (GNOME, Xfce), or !kdesudo (KDE). If you're unable to execute commands with sudo see: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/fixsudo07:59
alvinI have 2 services that fail on startup (seen in /var/log/boot.log): The "SMB/CIFS FIle and Active Directory Server", which I don't need, but can't disable, and the "load fallback graphics devices", whatever that is What is that, and how can I disable it?08:00
lordievaderyossarianuk: You can use the recovery mode, from there you can get a root shell.08:02
yossarianuklordievader: what about for people who have forgotten the password08:04
valorieyossarianuk: http://aplawrence.com/Linux/lostlinuxpassword.html might help08:06
lordievaderyossarianuk: What password?08:06
lordievaderRoot doesn't have a password. (In Ubuntu)08:06
yossarianukit does when you set one08:07
yossarianuksudo passwd root.....08:07
yossarianukpreviously with debian/ubuntu I have always had to use init=/bin/bash single to change a forgotten pass.08:08
yossarianuk(I know I can use the liveCD and chroot to change also)08:08
lordievaderyossarianuk: Not Ubuntu policy. Anyhow grab a live-cd, chroot into the install and change the pw from there.08:08
yossarianukdone already - just wondering why init=/bin.bash no longer is working....08:09
yossarianukbut thanks for the help !08:09
lordievaderDoesn't that drop you to a init shell? I.e. with only initrd mounted?08:12
ikoniano, it should drop you to a normal shell08:16
ikoniahowever that is not the way to set the password, booting into single user mode should be fine, unless you have set the root password, in which case it will ask you for the root password in single user mode08:17
ikoniawhich is one of the reasons you shouldn't set the root password as it breaks the ubuntu auth system08:17
Walex2alvin: welcome to the brillian idea of Debian and Ubuntu developers to confufe people by having different names for a daemon, the service that starts it, the package in which it is delivered, and the name with which it appears in messages.08:33
yofelthat's called branding ^^08:34
Walex2yofel: :-) :-) :-)08:35
Walex2alvin: try something like: ls -ld /etc/{rc,init}*/*{smb,cifs,ad,samba}* and you may get a name to use in 'update-rc.d'08:36
alvinlol, Yofel :-)08:37
alvinupdate-rc.d. Now, now. And tht in the sytemd era08:38
alvinThe funny part is. I rebooted, and now only the samba thingy is left. The other service? Still no idea, but it didn't fail08:38
alvinMust have been an issue. You get those with parallell init. That's progress.08:39
alvin'SMB/CIFS File and Active Directory Server' is something that is started by samba-ad-dc.conf. I disabled it the Upstart way (.override with 'manual' in it), but it keeps trying to start08:40
alvinI've also put an override on smbd08:41
alvinAHA, but nog on nmbd...08:41
alvinThat might do it/ We'll see on next reboot08:41

awpteaHey folks. Been near a decade since I've run linux on a desktop/laptop. I have a GT70-894 (MSI) that can't seem to detect the video card. I tried installing the nividia-current package, but the "nvidia-detector" application always says, "none" for video. It seems stuck on the discreet graphics built into the cpu. What else can I try/do to get the video working?20:26
