foobarrynot sure why people insist on turning on fluoro lighting when the natural light is sufficient08:57
Myrttiless shadows? I don't know.08:58
foobarrymore squinting08:58
Gargoylefoobarry: Your idea of sufficient might not be the same as someone elses. Often I will also turn on the light in a room to change the colour of the light.08:58
foobarrymost monitors are backlit though08:59
Gargoylefoobarry: And it's not good for you to be staring at a bright monitor in a dark room.08:59
foobarryits certainly not dark though :(08:59

Aturnwaldit says that the file to remove woukld be ignored17:14
daftykinsdoes it say why?17:15
Aturnwaldbecause it isn't installed, but on the other Programm, where you can get the files, there is the answer of the fault, that the file is there17:15
daftykinsright but a forum can't tell you what's true of your system17:16
daftykinsto be honest, your system seems to be in quite a mess17:17
Aturnwaldyeaa, that I'll know, too. But a forum can tell me how I can uninstall a file17:17
daftykinsthere's evidence of you trying to install redhat packages on here too, haha17:17
Aturnwaldbecause, I can't install any programs right now17:18
Aturnwalduii, that I didn't know17:18
Aturnwaldso, what can I do ? a new install again, or something elese ?17:18
Aturnwaldthe damage happens when I installed a file from Ubnutu software cengter17:19
daftykinswell, as someone said earlier, it's not worth fixing your 13.10 install when it only has one month left of support17:19
daftykinsso, why not backup and clean install 14.04? :)17:20
Aturnwaldlisten, I tried to install 14.04, but at the 1st time my Laptop brokes, on a CHIP failure17:20
daftykinsan operating system did not break your hardware17:20
Aturnwaldthe I bought a brand new Laptop, and I removed the blody Windows and I installed 14.04, and again it would work, because of the EFI fail17:21
diddledana CHIP failure? whta's one of those?17:21
Aturnwaldso I decieded to install 13.1017:21
daftykinsAturnwald: ok but there are ways to make EFI installs work, or to install without EFI.17:21

AturnwaldYeaa, a Mail, because I'll worte a bug report on the Main center pof Ubuntu in US, and a couple of days there came the mail17:22
AturnwaldO.K. I'll read the side17:23
daftykinsthere's some information there, but also a lot of the time you can just disable EFI and try to install legacy17:23
MartijnVdSbut that's uaually not necessary17:24
AturnwaldNO, 14.04 runs on my system, when I install it, but on the 1st new boot, it collapse, because during a blank screen17:24

daftykinsin fact yeah that one does not look good, the smaller one between the square job and the pair19:38
diddledan*sigh* c'mon facebook stargate sg1 page, think of something a bit more challenging than that why don't you?! They request fans to "Fill in the blank: "Thor is the Supreme ________.""20:28
daftykinsbadger!20:28
diddledannow that I'd like to see20:28
daftykinsi'm actually a stargate fan and can't answer that =/20:28
diddledanthe answer would be "commander" or for extra bonus points "commander of the asgard fleet"20:29
dogmatic69_anyone got ideas as to how I can rsync (or another method) from local to remote and have remote keep the permissions / acl given?20:29
dogmatic69_I have tried just about every 'tutorial' on the net and they all get the perms modified and acl dropped20:30
diddledandogmatic69_: ACLs are still a bit unsupported in a lot of stuff20:30
dogmatic69_diddledan: ok, but normal owner/group keeps changing also20:31
dogmatic69_and it drops the x bit on executable files20:31
diddledanoic, you _don't_ want the perms to change20:31
dogmatic69_no20:31
diddledanI believe you just don't pass the -p flag then20:32
dogmatic69_its a website, so I set up with www-data, rsynced with user that is in www-group20:32
dogmatic69_ye, that is what all the sites say20:32
dogmatic69_and does not work :(20:32
diddledannote that -a will probably set -p no matter what20:32
dogmatic69_yep, I dont use -a / -p20:33
dogmatic69_also tried with --no-group/user etc20:33
daftykinsdo they get preserved within archives?20:33
dogmatic69_-a is archive20:33
diddledandaftykins: they can do, or they can not do20:33
daftykinslike .tar20:33
daftykinsoic20:33
diddledandaftykins: it depends on the extraction args20:33
dogmatic69_I was wondering if its better to maybe zip / gzip and upload, then extract over20:34
daftykins*nod*20:34
diddledantar xf foo.tar <-- won't preserve perms from source host whereas this will --> tar xpf foo.tar20:34
dogmatic69_so if I done tar xf files.tar it would keep the servers settings20:34
diddledannote that the tarchive will always store the perms but the extraction can choose whether to utilise that data or discard20:35
dogmatic69_sure20:35
dogmatic69_and tar has --acls20:35

daftykinsi thought i could haggle so i turned up and said "i'd like to make an offer on that"21:15
daftykinsbut she said "well you can pay the price that's on it!"21:16
mappsheh21:16
dogmatic69_ok I have found that rsync has --acls, but that makes remote have locals acl. Is there something to just keep remote acls then?21:21
dsampleHi. I'm having a problem installing 14.04 from a USB stick. I've made a bootable ISO using unetbootin and startup disk creator but both ways the result is the same. It seems to boot from the USB stick but then gives the grub menu from the normal HDD21:22
dsampleI think it might be because the device IDs change from SDA=HDD, SDB=USB to SDA=USB, SDB=HDD when booting from the USB21:24
dsampleAnyone have an idea how I can get the USB stick to boot correctly?21:24
daftykinswhy do they always leave so soon ;_;22:22
ali1234does anyone know how to make a search engine with nutch and solr? :S22:23

Myrttidaftykins: who?23:41
daftykinspeople asking questions23:41
Myrttidaftykins: you would've had a solution?23:41
daftykinssure23:42
daftykinsor at least tried to help23:42
MyrttiI can pass it down to him23:42
daftykinslurking in another channel?23:42
Myrttibetter23:42
daftykinsto be honest it's 20 to 1 and a bit late to start now :)23:42
Myrttisnoring next to me23:42
Myrttiyeah it is23:43
daftykinshahaha23:43
daftykinswell, there's always tomorrow :)23:43
Myrttiyeah23:43
daftykinsbut Myrtti, you should wield your Linux skills in said scenario too! :)23:43
MyrttiI've idea what's wrong, it boots to grub rather than the try/install prompt23:45
MyrttiI think he might've found the answer some years ago But that won't help here23:45
ali1234i don't really see how you can get from the USB menu to the hard drive without selecting "boot first hard drive" - but maybe that is the only option and it is auto selecting it23:46
ali1234regardless, i'd try just dd'ing the ISO to the USB, and not using those creator tools23:46
daftykins^23:46
daftykinswhat i would've said.23:46
MyrttiI think he tried dd too23:47
MyrttiBut I'll pass that to him too23:47
daftykinsi'd be curious where those device IDs were coming from23:48
Myrttiit's an old lenovo with two hard drives23:48
MyrttiSo it might get them mixed Up23:48
ali1234sda/sda etc is totally logical and only affects anything after linux has booted23:49
ali1234grub uses different IDs23:49
daftykinsooooh i actually read that line wrong the first time23:53
daftykinsseein SDA and SDB in capitals somehow my tired eyes saw USB23:54
daftykins*seeing23:54
