zookoHi folks!03:38
zookoI like lubuntu, so I chose it for the flavor of Ubuntu to install on my Samsung ARM Chromebook 1: http://chromeos-cr48.blogspot.com/2013/05/chrubuntu-one-script-to-rule-them-all_31.html03:41
zookoHm...03:41
zookoI see that others have reported the same crashes in the comments as I am seeing...03:41
zookoI'll go try their suggestions now ...03:41
holstein!arm03:41
ubottuARM is a specific (RISC) processor architecture used in a variety of applications such as handhelds and networkdevices. For more information see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ARM . For ARM specific support, stop by the #ubuntu-arm channel.03:41
zookoThanks.03:42
holsteinzooko: i would do whatever is arm specific, then just add lxde03:42
zookoholstein: some of the commenters say nothing newer than 12.04 works on ARM.03:47
holsteinzooko: sure.. sounds likely03:47

JamesMc_Question for the group. Has anyone sent a fax (or know someone) who has sent a fax by Lubuntu/Ubuntu?16:51
holsteinJamesMc_: sure16:58
holsteinJamesMc_: i personally just setup an email to fax# account to simplify the process for myself16:58
JamesMc_Holstein, do you use any software like efax or ggax?16:59
holsteinJamesMc_: there are also many appliances that just do the faxing, which is the case where i have implemented linux for others.. but, i have setup faxing in the past.. and it worked. though, those tools are being likely dropped, or not included by default, or just not developed as much as they once were, since.. folks dont fax as much as they once did16:59
holsteinJamesMc_: i used something from the default repos at the time.. that would have been maybe 8.04 or so17:00
JamesMc_Holstein, is the fax account free or paid?17:01
holsteinJamesMc_: i dont use it anymore, friend..17:01
JamesMc_Ahh... ok17:02
holsteinJamesMc_: i had a free one that had a pay for tier that i personally never needed to pay for17:02
JamesMc_My reason for asking is that in a few years, I will be retiring. Me and my lady are thinking a retiring in a RV on the road - and I have thought of using my Lubuntu laptop as a mobile office with printer/fax and scanner capability17:04
holstein!info efax17:04
ubottuefax (source: efax): programs to send and receive fax messages. In component universe, is optional. Version 1:0.9a-19 (trusty), package size 107 kB, installed size 300 kB17:04
holsteinJamesMc_: why?17:05
holsteinJamesMc_: why not just email.. that would come in via data more easily.. and not require a phone connection. or keeping up with a phone #17:05
holsteini would rather pay for a service, i think, to give someone a # is they prefer faxing.. which, they likely would be fine emailing whatever is needed..17:05
holsteinthough, nothing is preventing lubuntu from sending and recieveing faxes.. i cant imagine the fax technology getting more prevelent in any way over the next few years, though.. on any operating system17:06
JamesMc_Holstein, we also do medieval and renn fairs. Sometimes the fair/festival need us to fax proof of insurance or something like that.17:06
holsteinJamesMc_: you can likely just email as well. but, im not debating *if* you need to fax17:07
holsteinJamesMc_: the fact is, faxing is going away17:07
holsteinJamesMc_: you *can* fax to and from lubuntu17:07
holsteinpersonally, regardless of operating systems, i would put very little thought into future planning regarding faxing and fax capability17:07
JamesMc_By keeping a fax ability - I am keeping my bases covered.  8-)17:08
holsteinJamesMc_: sure.. cover what you like, friend..17:08
holstein!Info efax17:08
holstein^ thats were i would start.. no doubt, ubuntu *can* send and recieve faxes.. assuming you have a dial up modem and all that in place.. but, i would just route through a service that would make it more reliable and easy regardless of operating system17:09
JamesMc_Just yesterday... I had to fax copies of receipts because a mixup on their end denied paying some of my medical bills.17:09
JamesMc_On the road... there is no certainity of finding a library or Staples with a fax machine.17:10
JamesMc_Sorry Holstein, some of the people we deal with still work with 20th tech instead of 21st century tech.   8-(17:13

ele88__hello:) could someone help me?17:51
rafaellagunalet's try ;)17:51
ele88__:) first of all sorry for my very bad english17:52
rafaellagunadon't worry for that17:52
ele88__ok....:) so, i installed lubuntu 14.04 and all is good but the volume is too low17:53
ele88__i try with sìpulseaudio17:53
ele88__sorry, pulseaudio but nothing17:53
silverlionele88__: where are you from?17:54
ele88__i can ear something , just the volume17:54
ele88__italy17:54
rafaellagunaLubuntu don't use PulseAudio, still uses Alsa17:54
rafaellagunaTry opening a terminal and type alsamixer17:54
silverlionrafaellaguna: not necessarily17:54
silverlioni am running pulseaudio too17:54
ele88__ok i did17:55
rafaellagunacan you see the audio channels?17:55
ele88__i try with alsamixer17:55
rafaellagunayou can move from one to another with the arrow keys17:55
rafaellagunaand change values with up and down17:55
rafaellagunais there any too low? try to adjust17:56
ele88__yes i can and i change all values at the top17:56
rafaellagunaand still low volume?17:56
ele88__yes:(17:56
rafaellagunaokay, radical solution. does your pc have enough space?17:57
ele88__i think...just a moment17:58
ele88__75G free17:58
rafaellagunaexit the alsamixer (esc) and type "sudo apt-get install xfce4-mixer"17:59
ele88__is a very old pc..17:59
rafaellagunamine too :)17:59
ele88__ok17:59
silverlionrafaellaguna: i'd go and try pavucontrol ;)17:59
rafaellagunapavucontrol is more for pulseaudio, isn't it?17:59
rafaellagunai'd prefer xfce4-mixer or gnome-alsa-mixer for alsa18:00
ele88__really i don't konw...is my first time with linux...18:00
ele88__ok all is installed18:00
silverlionrafaellaguna: yeah but depending on what software he is using he might use pulseaudio18:00
rafaellagunarun it. once opened you'll need to choose a soundcard (the expandable list) and the "add" controls. maybe the one we're looking for is hidden in alsamixer (it happens to me)18:01
rafaellagunasilverlion, Lubuntu 14.04 uses alsa only18:01
silverlionrafaellaguna: and why am i using pulseaudio then?18:02
ele88__in souncard menu i read pulseaudiomixer for all18:02
silverlion:D18:02
rafaellagunasilverlion, maybe you added another desktop, like Ubuntu18:03
silverlionrafaellaguna: negative ;)18:03
rafaellagunaele88__, ok, now "select controls" and activate all of them, specially "speakers" or similar18:03
rafaellagunaPCM is very important18:04
ele88__in select control i have only master18:04
rafaellagunacan you choose in the upper "menu" to another device?18:05
rafaellagunayou should see "playback" too18:05
ele88__i select playback  in soundcard menu, then i move to select control but i have only master18:06
rafaellagunaand "capture"? try all the options in that menu18:07
ele88__....only master for all...18:08
rafaellagunasomething's wrong, it looks you cannot control anything of your soundcard18:08
rafaellagunawhat soundcard is it? do you know?18:08
ele88__how can i know that?18:09
ele88__in computer tecnique details?18:09
rafaellagunaan app called "system profile" in system apps, I think18:09
rafaellagunaor "hardinfo" in the terminal18:11
ele88__front headphone HDA VIA VT82xx18:12
rafaellagunaat pic devices, audio device18:12
ele88__speaker and mix the same18:12
rafaellagunapci devices, sorry18:13
rafaellagunaare the speakers integrated in the computer?18:13
rafaellagunaor they have cable?18:13
ele88__integrated, but it always works...18:14
ele88__VT8237A/VT8251 HDA controller18:14
ele88__do you know if maybe with lubuntu 12.10 is better?18:14
rafaellagunathe sound subsystem is the same18:15
rafaellagunabut, as major is the version, better devices support, so older means less devices managed18:15
rafaellagunamaybe you need drivers for thast, try "software and updates", at system menu18:16
ele88__ok it's searching for updates18:17
rafaellagunanice ;)18:17
ele88__ok there are some software updates...install?18:18
ele88__installing18:18
ele88__:)18:18
rafaellagunaany audio driver? or just graphic'18:19
ele88__ehm...lots lib18:19
rafaellagunathat's good18:19
rafaellagunaand free ;)18:20
ele88__two linux-image18:20
rafaellagunathat's the kernel (nucleo) maybe drivers for your soundcard18:20
ele88__i hope...this is my mother's pc...18:21
ele88__:D18:21
rafaellagunanow restart when finished and come back here. I'm not going anywhere ;)18:22
ele88__thank you sooooooo much!!!18:22
rafaellagunaank me, it's not fixed yet18:22
rafaellagunaplease, come back and tell me if it works18:22
ele88__ok18:22
rafaellagunaele88__, I have looking for your problem, and I found something18:28
ele88__tell me:D18:29
rafaellagunait seems the old kernel fails with your soundcard, the explanation is here:18:29
rafaellagunahttps://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/122578918:29
ubottuUbuntu bug 1225789 in alsa-driver (Ubuntu) " [FUJITSU AMILO La1703 audio playback] Audio volume extremely low" [Undecided,Confirmed]18:29
rafaellagunaand the solution is here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/UpgradingAlsa/DKMS18:29
rafaellagunayou need to download this package: oem-audio-hda-daily-lts-raring-dkms_0.201309132333~ubuntu12.04.1_all.deb18:30
rafaellagunait's the specific driver for your soundcard18:30
ele88__it's still unpacking and installing....18:30
ele88__when finish i restart and install the driver18:31
rafaellagunacheck first if the upgrade was enough, if not follow the instructions18:31
ele88__or can i do all togheder?18:31
rafaellagunaI guess yess18:31
ele88__ok:)18:31
rafaellagunayissss18:32
rafaellaguna:D18:32
ele88__where are you from? if I could ask18:32
rafaellagunaoh yes, I'm in Spain now... vicino! But I'm from UK18:33
rafaellagunawhat part of Italy are you from?18:34
ele88__lovely Spain18:34
rafaellaguna:D18:34
ele88__Sardegna....più vicino:)18:34
ele88__i did compostala's way some years ago18:34
rafaellagunaohmygod, molto vicino, I'm in Valencia, we share catalan as language18:34
ele88__are you a student?18:35
rafaellagunanope18:36
rafaellagunaI'm 39 years old. But I look like 28! :D18:36
ele88__:)18:37
rafaellagunaso you're new with Linux. What do you think? I'm very interested18:37
ele88__well not so new, i use it at university...is the first time i try to install it18:38
rafaellagunaand? :)18:38
ele88__i like very much linux, i love the idea behind it18:38
rafaellaguname too, that's why I'm here18:39
rafaellagunaone day humanity will work for helping others, not for money. Ubuntu is just a stone for the mountain18:39
ele88__maybe if one don't know enough things (like me) for problems isn't easy... but there are a mountain of helping website and chats :):)18:40
ele88__hoping that day came soon..18:41
rafaellagunayes, I'm a member (6 year s), a kind of developer for artwork, and I needed help yesterday :D18:41
rafaellagunawe help each other18:41
ele88__yes is really important!! i'm going to leave windows also on my pc but first I have to solve some things like using emacs fot latex and C programming18:43
rafaellagunawow, that's sorcery for me :D I only do icons and wallpapers (and some graphic stuff)18:44
ele88__just very simple things:)18:44
ele88__well all installed but problem still there18:45
rafaellagunayou need to reboot18:45
ele88__i try to download package but i can't find it18:45
rafaellagunahttps://code.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-audio-dev/+archive/alsa-daily/+files/oem-audio-hda-daily-dkms_0.201406181447~ubuntu14.04.1_all.deb18:46
rafaellagunahat link onto the url18:46
rafaellaguna*copy that18:46
rafaellagunaanother option, do you what PPAs are?18:47
ele88__ehm....no....18:48
rafaellagunaI'll explain you once you download that package, install it and reboot ;)18:49
ele88__ok:)18:50
rafaellagunaI highly recommend to read www.lffl.org it's an Italian blog dedicated to Ubuntu and it's flavours18:50
ele88__thank you!!:D18:51
ele88__installing....18:51
rafaellaguna:)18:51
ele88__ok rebooted....now i try18:55
rafaellagunaI'm anxious18:56
ele88__:( i'm so sorry...18:57
rafaellagunaooooh18:57
ele88__maybe i do something wrong18:57
rafaellagunano, maybe it lacks something18:57
rafaellagunaok, time to add a PPA18:57
rafaellagunaYou know Ubuntu uses a "market", a place where all apps are for download18:58
ele88__:)18:58
ele88__yes18:58
rafaellagunawell, a PPA is an "extension" to the Software Center. It's a folder outside Ubuntu for having more apps available (a kind of extra-market)18:59
rafaellagunaopen a terminal, we're going to add the PPA for the Intel Audio cards18:59
ele88__ok rady18:59
ele88__ready19:00
rafaellagunatype this: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev/alsa-daily19:00
ele88__ok19:02
ele88__ it give me some thing19:02
rafaellagunaasks your password, and then if accepted or not19:02
ele88__but could you wait just a minute because i m writing on another pc...i move to the linux-pc19:03
rafaellagunadon't worry19:03
ele88_okhere i'm19:04
rafaellagunadid you add the PPA?19:04
ele88_yes i did...it give me that19:05
ele88_gpg: portachiavi "/tmp/tmprrclc8ep/secring.gpg" creato gpg: portachiavi "/tmp/tmprrclc8ep/pubring.gpg" creato gpg: richiesta della chiave 72B194E5 dal server hkp keyserver.ubuntu.com gpg: /tmp/tmprrclc8ep/trustdb.gpg: creato il trustdb gpg: chiave 72B194E5: chiave pubblica "Launchpad Ubuntu Audio Dev team PPA" importata gpg: Numero totale esaminato: 1 gpg:               importate: 1  (RSA: 1) OK19:05
rafaellagunaperfect, now type this: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade19:05
rafaellagunathat refreshes your apps database, and then apply every available upgrade19:06
ele88_ok....working....19:06
rafaellagunaAs I read on that page (and it's Ubuntu official) if your driver doesn't work fine, it will, because they're adding more soundcards DAILY :o19:06
rafaellagunathat package you downloaded before is at the PPA too, if they upgrade it you'll receive automatically the new version, that's what PPAs do19:07
ele88_ok great! i'm luky19:07
ele88_ok finish19:07
ele88_reboot?19:07
rafaellagunaI'm sorry I really couldn't help you, but I hope these guys update soon your driver19:08
ele88_ok so i have to wait...?19:08
rafaellagunaI'm afraid yes19:09
rafaellagunaI'm sorry19:09
ele88_oh don't worry that's ok:):)19:09
rafaellaguna:)19:10
ele88_could i contact you if i'll have any problem?19:11
rafaellagunaOf course. I use to be here.19:11
ele88_thank you rafael!!! have a great time!!!:)19:11
