Michael07Using a Thinkpad X240 and kUBUNTU 14.04, I can't get the touchpad usable or at least the mouse buttons working. Tried several links describing this issue and finally I'm thinking of a KDE-issue now, as other UBUNTUs or MINT 17 Cinnamon behave much better. More details and results of my test are here: http://paste.kde.org/phl0clkzl. Where should I ask for assistance with these problems?07:22

RoeyBluesKaj:  so I was wondering if you still want me to reboot12:03
BluesKajRoey, try, sudo alsa force-reload, but if that doesn't do it, then a reboot is the only option afaik.12:15
RoeyBluesKaj:  ok, I did force-reload, and then issued the play command again.  Same problem, it just freezes in place anddos not advance.12:17
RoeyBluesKaj:  and in Amarok when I hit "play", the progress bar does not advance.12:17
BluesKajwhich app is play linked to ?12:18

Guest86741it in recovery mode but in normal mode it doesn't work..... I tried many things but nothing, I was thinking tha maybe it's a problem with the lastest version and my hardware so there are any way to write to the developers specifying my hardware or something like that???13:39
BluesKajGuest86741, did you try to update and upgrade at the VT/TTY ?  ctl+alt+F1-F613:53

vbgunzI cloned my system from an nvidia proprietary driver system and put it on a system without an nvidia card. How do I get the proper display resolution and functionality?17:23
vbgunzi'm sure I might have to dpkg-reconfigure x something but I'm not sure what17:25
vbgunzanyone?17:25
vbgunzI'm gonna try something that might boot me out of a working system, but gonna do it :/17:25
lordievadervbgunz: What card does the system have and what driver is it running?17:26
vbgunznot sure how to tell, the driver manager in kubuntu doesn't tell me anything (literally) and the res should be 1366x768 but I'm stuck at 1024x76817:27
vbgunzI'm currently removing everything nvidia, I thought just backing up the xorg file i had would be enough, evidently not17:27
lordievadervbgunz: Please pastebin the output of "lspci -k|grep -A2 VGA"17:27
BluesKajvbgunz, best not to have a xorh file until you find the gpu, sudo lshw -C video17:28
BluesKajxorg17:29
vbgunzhttp://pastebin.com/L1VpSjT917:29
lordievadervbgunz: No need to remove Nvidia related things.17:30
lordievaderStill strange it doesn't load a driver for the Intel card.17:30
BluesKajxorg is preventing it methinks17:30
vbgunzI was pretty convinced I didn't need to but the only resolution option I have is 1024x768 which is wrong and Steam doesn't start up at all complaining about opel gl extensions *but* knowing how good Intel is, at least should be, I believe I'm stuck at something that can be solved17:31
lordievadervbgunz: There is no driver loaded for the Intel card/chip, that's your problem.17:32
vbgunzmy kubuntu driver manager by the way shows me nothing, I'm convinced something is wrong with that17:32
lordievadervbgunz: Nope, nothing wrong with that ;)17:32
vbgunzhmm, on the other system, all I ever did was install the nvidia blob from the official repos, nothing experimental, no ppas17:32
vbgunzhmm, maybe an "all good, nothing to see here" would have told me something, I expected to see something in that window17:33
vbgunzwell I removed everything I could about nvidia, gonna try rebooting17:34
vbgunzbrb17:34
BluesKajvbgunz, looks to me like the intel driver is probly the i91517:34
lordievaderCould it be that xserver-xorg-video-intel was removed?17:36
BluesKajwe'll see when he returns17:37
vbgunzlordievader: you're right, removing everything nvidia didn't help at all17:39
BluesKajvbgunz, check for xserver-xorg-video-intel17:40
vbgunzok17:40
vbgunzI might need to install that17:40
BluesKajthat's why we're asking17:40
vbgunzit says I have it17:41
BluesKajok look for nvidia17:41
vbgunznot sure how to look for it really, I just did an apt-get on that package and it said I had it, coming from an AMD system17:41
BluesKajand nouveau17:41
BluesKajin your package manager17:42
vbgunzok17:42
Walexvbgunz: very important link to follow17:42
vbgunzWalex: I don't see a link?17:43
Walexvbgunz: if your problem is to get Steam to work well on Kubuntu before 14.0417:43
vbgunzI'm on 14.04, when plugging this esata disk into an nvidia powered system, everything runs flawless, this is just a notebook where there's no nvidia in sight and it's just borked.17:44
Walexvbgunz: ahhhhh!17:44
lordievadervbgunz: What output do you get from "sudo modinfo i915"?17:44
vbgunza lot of info lordievader17:45
Walexvbgunz: the crucial detail is whether the system has installed the nVidia binary driver or not.17:45
Walexvbgunz: if the system has the nVidia binary driver, it also has installed stuff that breaks most other drivers.17:45
vbgunzyes, and I just ran a suo apt-get remove nvidia* and removed as much of it as I could. would be awesome if I didn't have to do that though17:45
vbgunzlordievader: should I pastebin this?17:45
vbgunzor am I looking for something?17:46
lordievadervbgunz: Please do, together witht the output of "lsmod|grep i915"17:46
Walexvbgunz: then the next question is whether the nVidia binary driver was installed with the Ubuntu packages of the nVidia installer17:46
Walexvbgunz: then the next question is whether the nVidia binary driver was installed with the Ubuntu packages OR with the nVidia installer17:46
vbgunzthe nvidia driver was as official as possible, no ppa or from the nvidia website17:47
vbgunzloride hold up, gonna paste this17:47
Walexvbgunz: the "nvidia driver was as official as possible" means "noveau" :-)17:47
vbgunzhttp://pastebin.com/DbanqJJG17:48
vbgunzhttp://pastebin.com/rf8P2L7117:49
lordievaderAs I figured, it's loaded but unused.17:49
vbgunzman, when I go into systemsettings, the only resolution I have is 1024x768 and steam complains that it's missing opengl extensions17:49
lordievadervbgunz: You could blacklist both nvidia and nouveau.17:50
vbgunzshould I try removing everything nouveau?17:50
Walexvbgunz: no, that's silly17:50
lordievadervbgunz: That's a bad idea.17:50
vbgunzthanks, I feel great that being a silly idea17:50
Walexvbgunz: the thing to do is to ensure that the nVidia *binary* driver is removed17:50
vbgunzI'd really rather not17:50
lordievaderWalex: Blacklisting it should be enough ;)17:51
Walexvbgunz: and then to write a few lines of 'xorg.conf' to ensure that the 'intel' driver is used17:51
vbgunzwell, I removed as much from apt-get as I could, how do I start black listing?17:51
Walexlordievader: no, because the autoconf often uses the 'modesetting' or 'vesa' drivers and those should not be blacklisted17:51
lordievaderOh, that's a good one, blacklist and rename xorg.conf to xorg.conf.bak or something.17:52
vbgunzI did, first thing I did in fact17:52
vbgunzI did have a custom xorg to work with several displays and use the nvidia driver. the first thing I did was mv it out of the way17:52
Walexvbgunz: lordievader: your approach is somewhat confused...17:52
lordievaderBlacklist, rename xorg... what's confusing?17:53
Walexvbgunz: once you are sure that the nVidia binary driver is no longer present, the next step is to look at the Xorg log and check which driver gets activated17:53
vbgunzok, that's /var/log/x something17:53
vbgunzI think I can find it17:53
vbgunzXorg.0.log?17:54
Walexlordievader: blacklisting is just trying to stop the autoconf, but it is likley that the autoconf is not an issue.17:54
Walexlordievader: the most likely issues are: the laptop has Optimus or something like that. there are still nVidia binary libraries and modules around. the 'modestting' or 'vesa' drivers are autoactivated.17:55
vbgunznot sure how to tell what's being loaded from the log file17:55
Walexvbgunz: pastebinit /var/log/Xorg.0.log17:55
vbgunzI don't think this notebook has nvidia at all17:55
BluesKajWalex, no optimus there , he has only one gpu17:55
BluesKajintrl17:55
BluesKajerr intel17:56
lordievaderWalex: Blacklisting stops the module from loading.17:56
lordievaderAnd since Ubuntu likes modules a whole lot, it's a perfect way of disabling drivers.17:56
Walexso the optimal way to get everything to work is: verify that the installation is clean and that the 'intel' driver and related DRM modules get loaded on both the kernel and the X side.17:56
Walexlordievader: blacklisting means blacklisting several things "just in case", and some of those things should not be blacklisted because they cvan be useful.17:57
vbgunzhere's Xorg.0.log http://pastebin.com/xz3YhxvT17:57
lordievaderWalex: Several things? I was just saying nouveau and nvidia, nothing more.17:58
Walexlordievader: but also 'modesetting' and 'vesa' could be there.17:58
Walexvbgunz: anyhow in your case the issue is that the 'intel' driver gets loaded but the server cannot acces the DRM device17:59
vbgunznot sure how to work around that17:59
BluesKajpersonally a xorg really isn't needed unless there are special circumstances like some rare gpu, but an intel i915 diver is very commonly used without any xorg.conf at all17:59
Walexlordievader: ahhh and in the case it is actually fbdev' that gets loaded, so that should have been blacklisted17:59
vbgunzI mean, it's a beautiful thing when things just sort of work, I'm stretching it I know but I imagined cloning this system wouldn't really require I just reinstall to get something working18:00
Walexvbgunz: autconf "usually works".18:00
vbgunzwhere do I look at what I can blacklist?18:00
vbgunzI know there's a blacklist file, let me see if I can locate it18:01
lordievaderWalex: I don't see how or why modesetting and vesa would be blacklisted.18:01
lordievadervbgunz: /etc/modprobe.d/18:01
Walexlordievader: well, if you want to ensure that the 'intel' module gets loaded and only it gets loaded, and you want to achieve it by blacklisting, you need to blacklist every other module that autoconfig might possibly use instead of 'intel'.18:02
vbgunzthat's everything in that directory http://pastebin.com/3ky9cZcU18:02
Walexlordievader: but I see that you know better, so please go ahead.18:02
vbgunzI should just jump in the generic file and paste that or start just black listing?18:02
lordievadervbgunz: Like I said, I'd blacklist the nvidia driver and nouveau. They shouldn't interfere, but still.18:04
vbgunzok, I'm in blacklist.conf, should I just add blacklist nvidia and blacklist nouveau ?18:04
vbgunzok I'll do that, as a minor workaround, it's no problem18:04
vbgunzok, did it, should I just reboot and see if something got fixed?18:05
lordievadervbgunz: Yes, perhaps nvidia needs a version number. Looking at the nvidia-304 blacklisting it blacklists nouveau and a couple of nvidia versions (nvidia-173,nvidia-96).18:05
vbgunzok brb then18:06
vbgunzI blacklisted nvidia and nouveau both on their own lines in blacklist.conf and that didn't work in solving the resolution of 1024x768 -> 1360x76818:09
vbgunzhmm, I really wish this was easier, a bit more automatic :)18:09
lordievadervbgunz: Is the driver loaded?18:10
vbgunzhow to tell?18:10
BluesKajvbgunz, well cloning from different hardware isb't exactly the best install method18:10
lordievadervbgunz: lspci -k|grep -A2 VGA18:11
vbgunzBluesKaj: I'm not really trying to actually "install", I'm trying to go on vacation and take my desktop with me temporarily18:11
BluesKajstill not a good idea,18:12
vbgunzlordievader: I don't think so, I probably should have seen i915 in there?18:12
lordievadervbgunz: You don't, do you?18:13
vbgunzlordievader: no, I see vga compatible controller18:13

vbgunzBluesKaj: I went to install it and it said I already had it18:18

vbgunzcan I maybe dpkg-reconfigure something or is that going to far?18:19
vbgunzhmm, hold up18:19
lordievadervbgunz: Worth a shot, when you are booting add "video=i915:modeset=1" to the line containing 'kernel' in the grub menu (you need to edit the default entry)18:20

vbgunzKernel driver in use: i91518:26
vbgunz:D18:26
vbgunzlordievader: thanks for your tenaciousness!18:26
BluesKajgood18:26
lordievaderNice :)18:26
vbgunzyou're an awesome Badger!18:26
vbgunzok gonna reboot and change some stuff on the main desktop, create a new backup and hopefully just plus and play!18:30
vbgunzyou guys are awesome, no joke!18:30
Roeyhey all again18:36
Roeyhello BluesKaj & lordievader18:36
Roeystill no sound here18:36
lordievaderRoey: I haven't really followed the discussion from this morning, could you give a recap?18:39
RoeySure, so I checked settings on vapucontrol and they seemd all fine.18:46
RoeyI saw that the intel sound driver module had been loaded from startup18:46
Roeylordievader:  not sure if there are any errors that were given off (where could I check for those?)18:47
Roeylordievader:  seems like I can play sound fine from a text TTY but not when I switch to any other TTY or in KDE18:47
BluesKajRoey, you haven't mentioned sox, just like this morning...tell them everything you're using so we don't waste anymore time18:52
Roeyah, understood:18:52
Roeylordievader, BluesKaj: when I issue "play /usr/share/sounds/alsa/*", I see sox play coming up, and it stays stuck at 00:00, doesn't even respond to ctrl-c.  In Amarok, when I hit Play, the progress meter doesn't move and no sound is heard.  In Youtube, the video plays without sound.18:53
BluesKajBBL18:53
RoeyWhen I check vapucontrol and KDE system settings' sound settings, those appear fine from both front end and back end perspective18:54
lordievaderRoey: You mention the TTY, how do you play audio files from there?18:55
RoeyI login at the console and then issue "play /usr/share/sounds/alsa/*"18:56
Roeylordievader:  ^18:56
Roeymy bad, I aim to always start out my replies with people's nicks18:56
lordievaderRoey: Ok, what happens when you do the same thing from the Konsole under KDE?18:57
Roeylordievader:  as I mentioned above, instead of playing, the sox play command appears to freeze up, not advancing in the progress bar and responding to ctrl-c18:58
Roeylordievader:  http://paste.ubuntu.com/7745031/18:59
lordievaderRoey: Is pulseaudio running?18:59
Roeylordievader:  roey     30915  0.0  0.0 774108  7288 ?        S<l  Jul03   0:01 /usr/bin/pulseaudio --start --log-target=syslog18:59
lordievaderRoey: A small test, "echo 'autospawn=no' >> ~/.pulse/client.conf&&pulseaudio -k&&play /usr/share/sounds/alsa/*"19:01
RoeySo a couple of things:19:02
Roey1) the sox play command works as intended, and I hear sound19:02
Roey2) a pop-up appears saying "Fatal Error: Unable to connect to PulseAudio: OK"19:02
lordievaderRoey: 1) There seems to be a problem with pulse. 2) You left pavucontrol open ;)19:03
Roeyaha :)19:03
Roeyhey now Youtube works19:04
Roeypulseaudio is no longer running btw19:04
Roeylordievader:  when I try to play a file with Amarok, it doesn't respond19:05
lordievaderRoey: I know, now you are using bare ALSA. There seems to be a problem with your install/config of pulseaudio. Do you run a custom setup?19:05
Roeynot that I know19:05
Roeyit happened as soon as I did apt-get dist-upgrade a couple of days ago19:05
lordievaderRoey: You are now probably facing my biggest complaint with ALSA, it is capable of one stream at a time.19:05
Roeyoh is that so19:06
Roeydidn't know that19:06
RoeyI've been able to play multiple videos with mplayer19:06
Roeyand have multiple videos stream on Youtube19:06
Roeyis that because they were multiplexed through pulseaudio?19:06
lordievaderRoey: Using PA I bet.19:06
Roeywell yes19:06
lordievaderRoey: This is the reason PA exists, or so I've come to believe, it was called PolyAudio before.19:07
lordievaderPoly ring any bells?19:07
lordievaderAnyhow, try running pulseaudio in the foreground and see if any errors show up.19:08
Roeypoly sounds like it's begging for a cracker19:11
Roey(to crack its security vulnerabiltiies)19:11
Roeylordievader:  ok19:11
Roeypulseaudio -D ?19:12
Roeyor how?19:12
Roeyoh, that is for daemonizing19:12
lordievaderRoey: Nope, that puts it in the background, simply: pulseaudio19:12
lordievaderRoey: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/poly-19:12
Roeylordievader:  Hmm. ok.19:16
Roeylordievader:  youtube crashes when I tried to play a video when I have something playing in Amarok.19:16
lordievaderRoey: Does Pulseaudio show any usefull info?19:16
Roeyit doesn't print out anything19:17
Roeyalso,k the sox play command outputs sound at the same time as Amarok is playing, I found.19:18
lordievaderRoey: Hmm, try starting pa with the -v option.19:20
Roeyah, ok.19:20
=== kubuntu is now known as Zenix22700
Roeylordievader:  I re-startd Firefox with PA running19:23
Roeynow sound appears to work on Yotuube19:23
BluesKajis sox running /19:24
Roeyit appears to run correctly now19:25
RoeyBluesKaj:  we re-started PA19:25
Roeythat was basically it19:26
RoeyBluesKaj, lordievader:  thing is, this is not working from startup19:26
Roeyalso, KDE Mixer is empty for all the playback streams with this message "nothing is playing audio"19:26
lordievaderRoey: You probably now want to remove the 'autospawn no' line from ~/.pulse/client.conf19:27
Roeyokay19:29
Roeyit has two statements saying "autospawn no"19:29
lordievaderRoey: Yes, remove it.19:29
lordievaderRoey: Do you have any custom boot scripts I should be aware off?19:29
Roeyalright.  I left it an empty file.19:29
Roeylordievader:  I do the following in /etc/rc.local:  /usr/bin/amixer -c 0 set "Auto-Mute Mode" Disabled19:30
lordievaderIs this a recent change?19:32
RoeyI did it when I installed Trusty Tahr fresh19:32
lordievaderRoey: By the by, with respawn on all you should have to do when it happens again is "pulseaudio -k". The respawn option restarts it when pa goes down.19:39
Roeyok19:39
Roeypulseaudio -k.. that kills it?19:39
Roeygracefully?19:39
Roeylordievader, BluesKaj: thanks, guys :)19:42
lordievaderRoey: Yes, see the man page ;)19:45
Roeyaye :)19:45
Roeylordievader:  why does my SPDIF keep muting...argh19:47
vbgunzlordievader, BluesKaj, Walex I just want to update you guys. Using apt-get to remove everything "nvidia" and black listing nvidia and nouveau isn't what was needed in my case. Simply removing nomodeset from the kernel command line (can't remember why it was there in the first place) was the trick. So now I can use my Nvidia desktop, backup to an esata disk and boot on Intel hardware perfectly :)19:49
vbgunzI guess in case anyone ever ask, the kernel command line should be investigated, just wanted to update that in my case, no other tricks or mods were necessary19:50
vbgunzYou guys were really awesome in helping me track down the issue, so major thanks!19:52
lordievaderRoey: I have no experience with SPDIF.19:52
BluesKajRoey, is your spdif digital out connected to anything?19:55
RoeyBluesKaj:  my receiver19:58
Roeyyes19:58
BluesKajis it turned on ?19:58
Roeyyes it is19:58
BluesKajthen you mustr have automute enabled agian]19:59
BluesKajI 've heard that some cards auto mute the spdif/pcm out if the analog section is running20:00
BluesKajspdif/pcm is basically a passthru20:00
BluesKajluckily mine doesn't mute since I don't use the analog out20:01
Roeyaqh ok20:03
Roey*ah, ok.20:03
RoeyI'm using standard sound from the motherboard20:03
Roeycorrect me if I'm wrong, but isn't the sound controller built-in to the CPU these days?20:03
Roeyor is it a motherboard component20:03
BluesKajyes but are you using analog as well\?20:04
Roeyi.e. different chips from different mobo vendors20:04
Roeyright20:04
RoeyI have it on headphones as well.20:04
lordievaderUsually it is a chip on the mobo.20:04
BluesKajhmm, that could be it20:04
lordievaderDoesn't make them better...20:04
RoeyI've been doing this for a long time and this is the first time I got a response like this20:05
BluesKajwell, i have to leave for a while20:06
Roeyalright20:06
Roeythanks20:06
BluesKajI may be bacl later , not sure20:07
Roeyfor all your assistance20:07
