sebastianlutterI want to install virtualbox headless on ubuntu server 14.04 (without x11 dependencies if possible, will use rdp to manage guests). But the ose version as well as the puel version from oracle had x11 stuff as dependency. What is the most minimal way to install virtualbox on ubuntu server?09:42
Macerwhat is the best way to figure out what is eating up memory?10:56
lordievaderMacer: htop is nice for that.10:56
MacerSwap:         8.0G       1.3G       6.7G10:56
Macerseems a bit high10:56
Macerwonder if zfs is eating up that much10:57
Macerbut then again i have a few containers running10:57
Maceri'm willing to bet it's the zimbra container i'm running :)10:58
histo!atemyram | Macer10:58
ubottuMacer: If you are wondering why some tools report your system has very little free memory, have a look at http://www.linuxatemyram.com/ | A short primer on Linux memory management can be found here: http://sourcefrog.net/weblog/software/linux-kernel/free-mem.html10:58
Macerturkiss is msging spamming me10:59
Macerjust throwing that out there.. i usually am +g but reconnected a while back10:59
Macerhisto: it isn't the lack of ram that's bothering me...11:00
Macerit's the fact the swap is getting hit for 1.3GB ;)11:00
cloudmanHi can anyone recommend a comprehensive study book for running a ubuntu server?  Thanks.11:00
cfhowlettcloudman "the ubuntu server guide"11:00
cloudman;)11:01
histoMacer: /ignore turkiss11:01
Macerhisto: yeah i get that. i usually am +g irregardless it's just a spambot11:01
histoMacer: that page will explain it for you11:01
Macerhisto: yeah i'm pretty accustomed to how ram works in linux. but i would still like to know why/where it is hitting the swap11:02
Macerlordievader: thanks... i'll try it out and look into it11:02
histoMacer: did you even read the page?11:03
histoMacer: pastebin your free -m output11:04
* Macer facepalms ... yes. but it didn't explain anything new11:05
Macerthe original question is what can i use to see what is eating memory... lordievader told me htop.. and he was right. i figured out what was eating memory. it was the zimbra container's java11:06
Macermy swap was getting tagged for 1.3-1.5GB11:06

omfgitsasalmonmy old server recently kicked the bucket, and luckily, my hard disk didn't bite the dust. But unfortunately, when I boot from my hard disk, I'm unable to connect to the internet. ifconfig shows only a lo, and no eth0. I bought another disk and installed another copy of ubuntu. When I installed, wired network is working fine. Shows up as p1p3 instead of eth0.12:45
omfgitsasalmonNow, is there anyway I can re-run network config installation for the old drive because without eth0, I cannot run mysql and thus, is unable to recover my mySQL databases.12:45

omfgitsasalmoneh?12:47
omfgitsasalmonI'm running ubuntu server, not ubuntu.12:47
omfgitsasalmonI know what the server franchise is12:47
omfgitsasalmonoh, I forgot to include. The old hard disk is running 12.04, the new OS is running 14.0412:47
lordievaderomfgitsasalmon: Does the precise install load a driver for your network card?12:48
omfgitsasalmonlordievader: I have no idea, anyway to check. When booting up, it does show "configuring network" but results in a [FAIL]12:49
lordievaderomfgitsasalmon: lspci -k|grep -A2 Network12:49
omfgitsasalmondisplays nothing12:51
omfgitsasalmonokay, when I run sudo lshw -class network12:51
omfgitsasalmonit shows my new card12:51
omfgitsasalmonbut shows "Network Disabled"12:51
rauomfgitsasalmon: Please stop abusing your return key, you subliterate asswipe.12:51
cfhowlettrau profanity is not required or allowed here - as you well know12:52
lordievaderomfgitsasalmon: Wait,lspci doesn't show any network device?12:52
omfgitsasalmonnope12:54
lordievaderomfgitsasalmon: Is this the same if you run lspci without any argument?12:55
omfgitsasalmonwhen I run lspci without any arg, it shows an Ethernet controller12:56
omfgitsasalmonbut I think it's the controller for the OLD chasis.12:56
omfgitsasalmonlshw shows it as a Gigabit Ethernet Controller. Which is the old eth1, my new card is an ASUS built-in.12:57
lordievaderomfgitsasalmon: That can hardly be.12:57
dasjoeomfgitsasalmon: check /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules12:57
omfgitsasalmondasjoe: Vendor shows "Realtek" which is not the case.12:57
dasjoeomfgitsasalmon: just because you're using an on-board card doesn#t mean it's not a realtek chipset12:58
omfgitsasalmonI remember it not being a realtek when I run lshw with the new ubuntu.12:59
omfgitsasalmonlet me just reboot into the new OS and run the same command12:59
omfgitsasalmon1 sec12:59
omfgitsasalmonHmm, You're right, It shows *-network Desc: Ethernet Interface. vendor: Realtek businfo: pci@000:03:00.0 logical name: p3p1 version: 0c serial: e0:3f:49:a3:**:**13:03
RoyKomfgitsasalmon: I'd use lshw over lspci any day, but good you found it...13:04
dasjoeomfgitsasalmon: oh, I just read your device shows up as p1p3 instead of eth0, that is expected behavior. Add "biosdevname=0" to your kernel command line to go back to eth013:04
omfgitsasalmondasjoe: When I boot into the old OS, it shows this * Starting configure network device [fail] then after starting a bunch of other devices. it fails at configuring virtual network devices. and it got stuck at "Waiting for network configuration" and then "Waiting up to 60 more seconds for network configuration"13:05
omfgitsasalmonRoyK: Yes, I used to do lshw when troubleshooting spoilt hw, but this time I have no idea how to fix cause it's a total new chasis lol13:05
omfgitsasalmondasjoe: Okay, I'll google how to do that13:06
dasjoeomfgitsasalmon: that could also be related to /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules13:06
RoyKdasjoe: hm... yes - should be easy to remap there13:07
omfgitsasalmonahh13:07
omfgitsasalmondasjoe: Okay, it now shows eth0 and eth1, eth0 seems to be my old card. With the eth1 showing the same mac addr as the p3p1 of the new system. What and where do I add what?13:09
RoyKomfgitsasalmon: do you want to swap them?13:10
RoyKomfgitsasalmon: or have you removed the old eth0 card?13:10
omfgitsasalmonRoyK: This is a totally new chasis, my old chasis bit the dust, but I swapped the hard disk over. But now it lost network connectivity with ifconfig only showing lo and no eth0 nor eth113:11
dasjoeomfgitsasalmon: I'm not sure what exactly you want to do. Did you remove the old eth0 and now want eth1 to take its place? Either remove 70-persistent-net.rules or edit it to your tastes13:11
RoyKomfgitsasalmon: ifconfig -a ?13:12
dasjoeomfgitsasalmon: also, "man interfaces" should help you with getting the system back online13:12
omfgitsasalmondasjoe: So by removing the entire file it will regen on boot again? And my /etc/network/interfaces seems screwed as well showing eth0 and not eth113:12
RoyKomfgitsasalmon: ifconfig alone only shows interfaces in the up status13:13
omfgitsasalmonRoyK: with the a arg, it shows eth1 and lo13:13
dasjoeomfgitsasalmon: your /etc/network/interfaces can stay the way it is. Your old card was added to 70-persistent-net.rules and thus blocks the name "eth0". Just delete its line and rename eth1 to eth0 in the other line13:13
RoyKomfgitsasalmon: then just remove /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules and reboot13:14
RoyKor what dasjoe said13:14
omfgitsasalmonwhen I do ifup eth1, it gives an error saying my /etc/network/interface:9 misplaced option13:14
omfgitsasalmonok13:14
omfgitsasalmonlet me test this out13:14
omfgitsasalmondo I remove /etc/network/interfaces too ?13:14
rauomfgitsasalmon: Please stop abusing your return key, you crude loser.13:14
omfgitsasalmonoh wait, it's fixed now.13:15
omfgitsasalmonFound out there's a double line in /etc/network/interface. Now after doing an ifup, the eth1 is up13:16
omfgitsasalmonI'll still delete /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules just to be safe though13:16
RoyKomfgitsasalmon: fix /etc/network/interfaces - don't remove it. for udev to fix the device naming, just remove the rules file and reboot13:16
omfgitsasalmonRoyK: Yes, I fixed the interfaces file13:18
omfgitsasalmonand deleted the rules file13:18
