TheTrashProbably turned that file into a Heisenfile.01:46
jazzkutyaBen64: see? :)01:47
reisioheh01:47
TheTrashThanks for the pointers, guys.01:47
TheTrashFun detail: the install is on a SD-card in a SATA-to-SD adapter.01:48
TheTrashI do get the occasional fs corruption, but usually they get picked up on boot.01:48
TheTrashMaybe I should fork out the $30 to get a proper SSD in this machine.01:49
jazzkutyaTheTrash: you may want to do a very intensive memtest then but i'm not sure01:49
TheTrashIn my experience, these removable storage devices are simply a lot less reliable, I have similar experiences running stuff off USB keys01:50
TheTrashProbably missing a few of the integrity preservation mechanisms that are present on normal drives.01:51

meganerdvychune: you want a dynamic IP to be a DNS server?06:19
chrstphrchvzvychune, you mean a static ip for the machine? (i.e. is your router implementing NAT?)06:19
vychunemeganerd, yes chrstphrchvz, router is using NAT yes06:19
meganerdvychune: I keep my DNS servers on static IPs on VPSs that I rent.  What you could do is get a service like dyndns, and the when you register the domain use the dyndns hostname for your dns server.06:20
meganerdvychune: some ISPs block inbound DNS queries, so this might not actually work.06:21
chrstphrchvzvychune, meganerd, it would also depend on the router being used and what capabilities are enabled--e.g. NAT firewall port forwarding06:21

unopasterww you have been muted for 60 seconds as it looks like you are pasting lots of lines into the channel, please use http://paste.ubuntu.com and paste just the URL of your data here when you are unmuted06:21
vychunemeganerd, chrstphrchvz ok then, so with that we wouldn't need url masking right?06:25
meganerdvychune: it would help to know what it is that you want to do.06:26
chrstphrchvzvychune, Not necessarily--that's a feature of the dynamic dns right, (meganerd)? …06:26
vychunemeganerd, We want to host two sites on one server06:27
vychuneas well as  phpmyadmin stuff like that06:27
chrstphrchvzvychune, meganerd, clarification: the purpose of having a static ip *on the machine* is to let the router know what host to forward ports to (typically)…06:28
meganerdchrstphrchvz: no, vhosts is what it sounds like he wants06:28
vychunemeganerd, right06:29
meganerdchrstphrchvz: vychune, IPv4 is painful, OK to be clear, the static IP on the NAT'd "server" is a good idea, the dynamicDNS just helps with the publically routable IP being dynamically assigned06:29
blahdeblah1Hi all.  I'm running into a really annoying limitation in the 14.04 installer: it seems you can only set up drive encryption if you use the "wipe drive and install Ubuntu option".  This means I end up with a 256 MB /boot, which is way too small nowadays.  Anyone know a workaround?06:29
meganerdvychune: do you have the domain names already?06:29
vychunemeganerd, yes yes06:30
=== asdofindia_ is now known as asdofindia
meganerdvychune: and do you have a DNS server for these domains?06:31
DusXMTblahdeblah1: 256M really isn't a lot, but considering a kernel is just a couple megs big, I don't think it's that big of a deal06:31
meganerdblahdeblah1: for whatever reason, I was able to use the xubuntu installer and then manually set my /boot to 500MB06:32
vychuneI want to setup the NAT'd "server" with DNS06:32
meganerdvychune: for the record I hate NAT with the intensity of a thousand suns06:32
Ben64vychune: you would be much better off getting a small vps to start out on06:33
meganerdvychune: +1 to Ben64's suggestion06:33
vychunenot an option06:33
vychunefor a client06:33
vychunemust use this server06:34
blahdeblah1DusXMT: A kernel + initrd is over 20 MB, and I frequently want to have 10 or more kernels installed.  I've got servers that were installed with 256 MB /boot on 10.04 and over the upgrades to 12.04 and beyond have filled it very quickly.06:34
Ben64vychune: i'm not following what you mean by that06:34
blahdeblah1meganerd: Setting it to 500 MB is easy; setting it to 500 MB and getting full disk encryption to work is my issue.06:34
meganerdblahdeblah1: I had to use the xubuntu installer to do exactly that06:34
vychuneBen64: installing WP for a client, must use the server in question06:35
meganerdblahdeblah1: yesterday in fact06:35
DusXMTblahdeblah1: and... why exactly do you need that many kernels? Is your hardware configuration really so unstable that you need to boot into a different kernel to get something to work?06:35
meganerdvychune: self hosting of WP is probably not the best.  What is the main driver for this?06:35
blahdeblah1meganerd: So xubuntu's installer has complete support for encryption?  Can you then install normal Ubuntu (or Lubuntu, which might be more my thing) afterwards?06:35
=== feiScript_ is now known as feiScript
Ben64vychune: Then you should let them know hosting a website on a residential connection is likely a violation of the TOS from the ISP, and even if not, still not a great idea. Especially combined with dynamic ip address.06:36
DusXMTblahdeblah1: Yes, you can, it's a metapackage, I think it's named ubuntu_desktop or something like that06:36
blahdeblah1DusXMT: Because I expect this to be a long-lived machine.06:36
meganerdblahdeblah1: I just installed the other DEs (I installed the default and KDE) once xubuntu was installed.06:36
blahdeblah1It's nothing to do with unstable hardware configurations.06:36
DusXMTBut why do you need them? Do you even boot into them, when you have them?06:36
vychuneBen64 it's a business account06:37
meganerdvychune: and they plan on keeping WP up to date?06:37
vychunemeganerd, server is managed by their tech support (not me)06:38
vychunemeganerd, thats my job06:38
blahdeblah1DusXMT: Do you really think keeping a 256 MB /boot is that big a deal that I shouldn't be allowed a reason to want something larger?06:38
blahdeblah1DusXMT: If you upgrade from 10.04 to 12.04 and then add linux-image-current-generic, you end up with a 3.2 train, a 3.8 train, and a 3.10+ train.06:38
meganerdblahdeblah1: apt-get autoremove06:38
blahdeblah1The updater doesn't always do the right thing with removing the old ones either06:38
blahdeblah1meganerd: I know what apt-get autoremove does; I just don't want to have to do it very often06:38
vychuneblahdeblah1, why not use crom to do it for you?06:39
meganerdvychune: so you have a server that is behind a NAT, and you are trying to install WP on this server?06:39
DusXMTblahdeblah1: well, then just remove them in aptitude or synaptic, that big of a deal? I do agree that an installer should allow you to customize your partition sizes, but I just don't see a need for the old kernels06:39
meganerdvychune: and you also need a DNS server?06:39
blahdeblah1vychune: In my experience apt-get autoremove doesn't always do the right thing, and sometimes removes things that I want kept.06:40
DusXMTblahdeblah1: and the package with the default desktop is ubuntu-desktop, that should install unity and everything else that comes by default on ubuntu onto xubuntu06:40
vychuneWP is installed but yes i need a DNS to host both the client site and the tech's site06:40
blahdeblah1I might have a shot at the xubuntu installer then06:40
blahdeblah1thanks meganerd06:40
meganerdvychune: I do something similar for some of personal stuff that I serve out of the basement, but I keep DNS somewhere else06:40
DusXMTblahdeblah1: if autoremove removes things you don't want, you need to configure it otherwise. Go into aptitude or synaptics and mark the packages it would autoremove that you want to keep as manually installed06:41
meganerdblahdeblah1: I spent 3 days trying to reinstall my laptop, ended up just trying the other installers (Kubuntu seems to fail on full disk encryption)06:41
sbaitsokeyboard configuration is not persistent between boots, what to do?06:41
vychunemeganerd such as?06:41
meganerdvychune: Since this sounds like a company, I would get a static IP06:41
vychunemeganerd, Owner is El Cheapo06:42
sbaitsowhy is dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration not persistent?06:42
chrstphrchvzvychune, meganerd: I had done a similar setup, but I did not need dns setup internally--the NAT loopback worked in my case that I could even use the dynamic dns address to access via LAN.06:43
meganerdI have VPSs from here: http://buyvm.net/ and I also rent a physical server from http://www.ovh.com/ca/en/06:43
meganerdvychune: on top of the KVM server in the basement06:43
vychunemeganerd, nice lol06:43
vychunei have a VPS with BandwagonHost myself06:44
RiobeIs there a hotkey that disables/toggles your mouse? Mine just turned off and I'm wondering what I did to make that happen. Maybe a hotkey?06:44
meganerdvychune: it makes for a great learning platform, and my total outlay is still less than my ISP connection ($35/month for the server, <$10/month per VPS)06:44
vychunei got mine for like a year 12.99 i think06:45
chrstphrchvzRiobe: are you using a laptop?06:45
meganerdvychune: I have a VPS that is like $20/year06:45
meganerdvychune: good enough for a dns server06:45
meganerdvychune: I also make use of dyndns for my router (a vanilla Ubuntu server), and I lean heavily on IPv6 these for sane connectivity06:46
meganerdvychune: and saltstack to wrangle them all06:47
vychunemeganerd, ok then06:47
vychunebtw mine is 9.99 a year :) (bragging lol)06:47
vychunesaltstack?06:47
meganerdvychune: totally overkill, but if you need to use that server behind a NAT, your life will be a lot easier with a static IP.06:47
meganerdvychune: remote command execution with configuration management on top.06:48
vychunei think hostgator will be the best choice06:48
meganerdvychune: I reset my password on 20 machines (physical and virtual) today with two commands.  saltstack.org.  This is a very deep rabbit hole for sysadmins.06:49
vychuneholy s*** meganerd06:49
meganerdvychune: I meant to say saltstack is overkill for your project06:51
meganerdvychune: a static IP makes a lot of sense and simplifies things considerably (mainly by removing the most annoying problem).06:51
Riobechrstphrchz: No, and sorry for the delayed reponse. My mouse goes through my keyboard normally, so I unplugged the keyboard USB's and put them back in and lost my keyboard too. Mouse doesn't work when plugged in directly to USB either. Found a PS2 keyboard for the moment though.06:52
RiobeLooks like my USB just kicked it.06:52
chrstphrchvzblahdeblah1, meganerd: in the 14.10 installer, in the manual partition list there is "configure encrypted volumes" which can be done after creating sufficiently large /boot06:52
siliconemeganerd: In case you wondered, installed hplip solved it as it is was an hp printer. Thanks for you advice.06:53
RiobeIs there a way to see if USB is no longer available, or to recover it? My USB keyboard and mouse stopped working and I'm not sure what I did to screw them up. Sorry I don't know how to ask that question better.06:54
chrstphrchvzRiobe: for me, it's usually the other way around when the ps/2 stops working. You have tried rebooting, right?06:54
blahdeblah1chrstphrchvz: That's good to know06:54
meganerdsilicone: glad I could help.06:54
Riobechrstphrchz: No, I was hoping there might be a way to troubleshoot it while running. I'll go ahead and save things and give it a try.06:55
meganerdchrstphrchvz: good to know.  That sounds like the installer that xubuntu uses06:55
chrstphrchvzblahdeblah1, it's the "partition disks" screen that you usually get if you select manual partitioning or go back after using "Guided…".06:55
blahdeblah1yep - pity it's not there on 14.1006:55
vychunemeganerd, 100 dollars for static IP, got a straight H**L NO06:56
vychune$100/month06:56
chrstphrchvzmeganerd, this is the "alternate" installer I think. blahdeblah1 -- I'm almost certain it's not a new feature.06:56
* blahdeblah1 wonders if he missed the alternate installer when downloading. That's what I did on 10.04, but I thought they removed that.06:57
meganerdvychune: so you basically have a couple of problems to solve.  First is that your external IP will change, so your DNS servers will be functionally unreachable unless you register for dynamic dns (this is just for an automatically updating hostname that you can use with the domain registrar)06:57
chrstphrchvzvychune, "off the top of my head" dyndns is $5/mo, but i'm sure there's cheaper options06:57
DusXMTIs the alternative installer d-i configured for ubuntu? (I'm not sure if it's that, or something else)06:57
blahdeblah1DusXMT: It certainly used to be06:58
blahdeblah1chrstphrchvz: I just checked again, and there's definitely no alternate ISO image any more06:58
blahdeblah1Is it a kernel option on boot?06:58
chrstphrchvzvychune, meganerd, Sorry, I'm not understanding the need for private dns…06:58
meganerdvychune: then you get to deal with port forwarding and NAT.  Fortunately UDP and TCP usually work, so that your webserver and bind should work.06:58
vychunehe has dnsalias06:58
DusXMTblahdeblah1: THen how about using the mini.iso? If you go into expert mode, you can select what distribution you want to install, and it downloads everything from the internet06:58
DusXMTAnd it has the alternative installer06:59
chrstphrchvz(I am using mini.iso in fact)06:59
blahdeblah1Where is that?  It doesn't show up in the releases download.06:59
blahdeblah1e.g. My local mirror is http://mirror.internode.on.net/pub/ubuntu/releases/06:59
DusXMTblahdeblah1: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD07:00
meganerdvychune: the second problem to solve is that the IP address that your domains point to will change, and you will have to figure out a way to update that.  While all of this is doable, a single cheap VPS will pretty much eliminate these headaches.07:00
vychunethe only problem i'm having now is doing example.com/blah/blogblah, instead of example.com and thats all that's seen07:00
vychunemeganerd, yea i know lol07:00
DusXMTblahdeblah1: And as it turns out, they even have a version for 14.04, so if you use that, you don't need to go into expert mode07:00
riobechrstphrchvz, that fixed it07:00
blahdeblah1DusXMT: I might give that a crack07:01
meganerdDusXMT: I have the mini.iso in my PXE environment at home, I was not going to do that over my cellular link.07:01
Ben64vychune: then you should head over to the apache channel or something for help with that07:01
vychuneBen64, it's because of DNS masking07:01
meganerdvychune: that exact case is covered in the documentation.  Apache actually has pretty thorough documentation :)07:02
vychunereally?07:02
* vychune gets a head smack07:03
vychuneDoh07:03
meganerdvychune: I would start by ignoring the dynamic problem.  Set up a DNS server and apache, port forward through the router, and use the public IP of the router.07:03
meganerdvychune: once you get all of that working you can worry about solving the dynamic IP problem.07:03
vychuneok07:03
meganerdvychune: who did you use as a registrar?07:04
vychunethey are using GoDaddy07:04
meganerdvychune: it might be worth checking to see if their godaddy account already has DNS serving, it probably does.07:05
meganerdvychune: while I am a huge fan of running my own DNS, you can tackle that later if need be.07:05
vychuneok then07:06
vychunecan you pointme to a tutorial or something?07:07
chrstphrchvzvychune, something else to consider/be aware of: http://saschpe.wordpress.com/2013/11/12/godaddy-dyndns-for-the-poor/07:07
vychunemeganerd, i'm all turned around on what to do now lol07:07
meganerdchrstphrchvz: I use CNAMEs with my dyndns all the time, however this is probably not where he should start.07:09
meganerdvychune: do you have access to the godaddy control panel for this domain?07:09
vychunenope meganerd07:10
helmut_hi07:10
meganerdvychune: so I would ignore bind and dns for the moment.  Use a hosts entry in your local machine to point the hostname to the IP of their router.  Get apache working.07:11
meganerdvychune: that will keep you busy for a while.  I have not used godaddy, but I seem to remember them bundling DNS by default.  You will need to add (or have someone add) "A" or host records that point to their router, probably named www.07:12
meganerdvychune: once all of that is working, you can figure out dynamic dns, or just log in to godaddy an update the IP every time it changes.07:13
vychunemeganerd, ok let me make sure we are on the same page07:16
vychunethe server is accessible outside, but not by domain outside port 80. You want me to point the domain to the router IP Addr of the router, right?07:18
meganerdvychune: exactly.  so www.whatver.tld should resolve to their router's external IP07:19
jkbbwrOkay I have a brand new fresh install of stock ubuntu07:19
jkbbwrI want to achieve 2 things07:19
jkbbwr1 nvidia drivers, 2 gnome307:19
Ben64!nvidia | jkbbwr07:19
ubottujkbbwr: For Ati/NVidia/Matrox video cards, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VideoDriverHowto07:19
meganerdvychune: for testing, you can create an entry in your /etc/hosts file that does the same thing.  Don't forget to remove it!07:19
jkbbwrLast time I tried the nvidia drivers, everything screwed up07:20
vychunebut what about the second domain?07:20
meganerdvychune: same thing07:20
Beldarjkbbwr, gnome 3 is already there, do you want the shell?07:20
meganerdvychune: then configure apache for vhosts07:20
vychuneOkay07:20
jkbbwrBeldar: I dont want unity, ever07:21
jkbbwrBeldar: but Im more interested in nvidia getting sorted07:22
Ben64jkbbwr: then give more information, like what video card, system setup, etc. what happened last time you tried installing nvidia07:22
jkbbwrokay so I tried through the gui addictional drivers, and I tried installing nvidia-current07:23
jkbbwrboth of them caused booting to black screen07:23
vychunemeganerd, Ben64 , chrstphrchvz THANKS!!!!!!!07:24
meganerdvychune: your welcome07:24

vychunemeganerd, yeplol07:25
chrstphrchvzvychune, you're welcome. Keep digging, you're not the first person to come across this. I imagine this is the first time you've had to do something like this?07:25
vychunechrstphrchvz, yep07:26
chrstphrchvz(it's not a task I am prepared to have someone pay me to do myself (yet))07:26
vychunewithout the dyndns i would be done lol.07:27
jkbbwrBeldar: not sure what to try next07:29
chrstphrchvzjkbbwr, I missed the beginning of the discussion, could also tell us the card model?07:31
jkbbwrGTX 670M07:31
Beldarjkbbwr, graphics are not my area however you need to identify the hardware, run lspci and find it ans include it with more details you have not to the channel.07:32
jkbbwrIDk anything about it07:32
meganerdjkbbwr: that sounds like an Optimus device07:33
jkbbwr VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GK107M [GeForce GT 650M]07:33
meganerdjkbbwr: in your laptop's bios/uefi interface, you might want to try setting the video card to discreet only first.07:33
jkbbwrmeganerd: there are no video card options in my bios / uefi07:34
meganerdjkbbwr: what laptop is this?07:35
chrstphrchvzjkbbwr, what is your laptop model?07:35
jkbbwrIts an alienware M14xR207:35
TajgerHello. It's sad that in regular Ubuntu there is no prepared application for IRC channel (like it is in Ubuntu Studio.07:37
bekksjkbbwr: the 650M is an Nvidia Optimus chipset.07:37
jkbbwrWhat does that mean ^^07:37
bekksThat you cant simply use nvidia drivers.07:38
jkbbwrhmm07:38
bekksjkbbwr: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/HybridGraphics07:38
jkbbwrSee now I think I tried installing -33107:39
jkbbwrbut I still got dem black screen07:39
bekksjkbbwr: Thats what I just told you. You cant simply use nvidia drivers.07:39
jkbbwrthen these instructions are useless?07:40
chrstphrchvzjkbbwr, have you come across Bumblebee?07:40
jkbbwrI heard someone talking about it07:40
jkbbwrIll try instlaling that07:42
jkbbwrsee what happens07:42
meganerdjkbbwr: primus is what you want07:42
jkbbwrarch so many confusing instructions07:43
meganerdjkbbwr: bumblebee is old07:43
meganerdjkbbwr: yup, I have an optimus device in my laptop, major PITA.  Been wrestling with it for a year and a half.07:43
jkbbwrokay so *not bumblebee*07:44
function9jkbbwr: for optimum performance, you'd need to have a custom kernel07:44
jkbbwroh god...07:44
TajgerI'm known between my homies as a "computer guy", so when someone wants an OS to be reinstalled, I say about Linux specified for that person (Lubuntu for cheap netbooks etc.). That works.07:44
function9yeah tell me about07:45
jkbbwroh hell...07:45
function9jkbbwr: that's what it says in the nvidia site07:45
meganerdfunction9: I believe the nvidia site just says "go f*&^% yourself Linux losers"...  I may be paraphrasing :)07:45
function9meganerd: yep :(07:46
riobeI have now twice in one night had my USB mouse just stop working. It is still lighting up, but all input from it is ignored and I bet it'll stop lighting up if I unplug it and plug it back in. It is a Razer Mamba and I'm on Ubuntu (14.04) with kubuntu-destop installed and KDE desktop active. I have no idea how to troubleshoot this, any ideas?07:46
jkbbwrmeganerd: so what do I install07:46
meganerdjkbbwr: fortunately I have gone through most of this hell, the package you need is called simply primus07:46
bekksjkbbwr: Did you read the link I gave you?07:46
jkbbwrbekks: yes but you said they didnt work07:47
meganerdjkbbwr: though in my case I just turned off the nvidia chip in the BIOS/UEFI interface07:47
bekksjkbbwr: Wrong.07:47
function9jkbbwr: I'm going to practice first on virtualbox, and get my kernel hacking skills up to speed, once I am very confident, I will proceed with the real deal07:47
riobeI'd rather not have to restart multiple times a night to get my USB devices back.07:47
chrstphrchvzfunction9, jkbbwr : the only kernel-related issue i've come across is  incompatibility with newer kernels07:47
jkbbwrbekks: you said, "you can't use nvidida drivers"07:47
bekksjkbbwr: I told you you cant simply install the nvidia drivers. And the link given told you what to do.07:47
function9chrstphrchvz: hence the virtualbox test07:47
bekksjkbbwr: So you havent read it.07:48
svetlana?07:49
svetlanabekks: hi.07:50
svetlanabekks: you said "I have already told you this" at least a couple times. please also suggest the folk what to do in a couple words; I'm sure it'll be helpful.07:51
riobeRunning "modprobe -c | grep mouse" shows a line that says "blacklist usbmouse" Could that be what is causing my mouse to randomly stop working?07:51
riobeNot sure what modprobe is yet, but I found this relevant: http://askubuntu.com/questions/453689/mouse-not-working-after-installing-14-04-lts-64bit07:51
v1roslol07:51
svetlanariobe: hi. please add "-C 4" to see context of the grep results.07:51
svetlanariobe: modprobe -c | grep -C 4 mouse07:52
bekkssvetlana: I'll do next time.07:52
svetlanabekks: did he already quit?  jkbbwr is still here, you can go ahead and do it :)07:52
svetlana(thankfully :)07:52
riobesvetlana: I did not know I could do that. That's awesome, thanks! Context in this case is a bunch of other blacklists commands. There is an "alias usb:v*p*d*dc*dsc*dp*ic03isc01ip02in* usbmouse" line later in the file.07:53
svetlanariobe: modprobe shows you information about kernel modules. kernel is the non-gui thing that chats to yuor hardware.07:53
riobesvetlana, Oh, well that makes sense. Thanks!07:53
svetlanaI see. you can put some more context to a pastebin if you like (I don't know what these aliases are a part /of/ and I suspect more context could be useful.)07:54
bekksjkbbwr: Did you install nvidia-prime already?07:54
riobesvetlana, Is there a way to pipe output to a clipboard? Otherwise I'll need to restart again as it's the only way I know to get my mouse back.07:54
svetlanariobe: you could use the pastebinit tool if you like. it's a package; you run your command and add a "|pastebinit" to the end.07:55
riobeThat's awesome. I'll get a pastbin in a moment then.07:55
riobesvetlana, It's things like that which make me glad I switched to Linux, but man I can tell I'm still green. :P http://paste.ubuntu.com/775464107:57
svetlanaI would probably just `modprobe -c | pastebinit`; the last portion is still greek to me.07:58

riobesvetlana, Sorry, not sure what to provide since I'm not sure how to troubleshoot this one. In both cases it went dead I was trying to click a link in google-chrome. Not sure if that is a reason, but I have no other pattern yet. It's a Razer Mamba mouse that I have wired into a Corsair keyboard which forwards it to a USB port on my PC. Taking it out of that and putting it into the PC directly makes no difference. Once it goes, unplugging and08:06
riobe replugging does nothing.08:06
svetlanajkbbwr: what did ask you to install synaptic? I thought someone here asked you to install a package. you can do so in the software centre.08:06
ArchLinux4Lyfev1ros, you don't know a good linux distribution if you saw one. go use arch for 5 minutes and you'll see how good it feels to configure everything manually and have your pacman break every xorg updat08:07

ubottuLeeuwenhok: Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) is the current release of Ubuntu. Download at http://releases.ubuntu.com/14.04 - Read the release notes at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/TrustyTahr/ReleaseNotes10:33

ubottutangerine (source: tangerine): music server using DAAP. In component universe, is optional. Version 0.3.4-6 (trusty), package size 73 kB, installed size 361 kB10:34
LeeuwenhokI downloaded the 14.04 release two weeks before. Wouldn't it be the release you're talking about?10:34
cfhowlettLeeuwenhok yes 14.04 is the one you want for Long Term Support10:35
ActionParsnipLeeuwenhok: yes. Ubuntu 14.04 is codenamed 'Trusty'. It is supported til April 201910:35
fakeActionParsnip: can you help me? how to include objbase.h in monodevelop ide....or anyway to use ShellExecute?10:36
LeeuwenhokI have 13.10 installed and I have a liveUSB which contains 14.04. After fixing the GRUB, how do I update Ubuntu?10:36
cfhowlettLeeuwenhok DON'T fix grub.  boot the 14.04 usb and install it.  grub will be fixed as part of this process.10:37
cfhowlettLeeuwenhok that is to say, boot the usb and install 14.0410:37
ActionParsnipFake: i dont code, try a developer chanmel. Threre is probably one here on Freenode10:37
LeeuwenhokBut I want to keep my previous files/apps.10:37
ActionParsnipLeeuwenhok: you will need to reinstall apps. You can restore user data from your backups10:38
cfhowlettLeeuwenhok move your /home to a dedicated partition.  when you install 14.04 DO NOT format that partition.10:38
cfhowlett!home10:38
ubottuYour home directory is where all of your personal files are usually kept. For moving your home directory to a separate partition, please see: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Partitioning/Home/Moving10:38
LeeuwenhokWouldn't it be easier to boot into 13.10 and let it update itself?10:38
LeeuwenhokThere must be an automatic install option. I saw it when I last used 13.10.10:39
cfhowlettLeeuwenhok you mean download 14.04 again?  well, you could do that ...10:39
LeeuwenhokIt wouldn't cause me trouble as I'd put it to download/install when I go to sleep. :p10:40
cfhowlettLeeuwenhok unattended upgrade?  you're braver than I am, but sure, that would work.  I guess.10:40
LeeuwenhokWhy? Are there risks?10:41
dasworthi, is there already a bug report for a crash of unity_support_test that stops/crashed the installation? My launchpad search foo is not very good. :(10:41
cfhowlettLeeuwenhok there are always risks.  unattended means you would not be there to respond to system messages10:41
LeeuwenhokThat's true.10:42
LeeuwenhokThen I'll just attend to it. 800 MB file would take about 2 hours to download.10:43
Pegaso87Hi guys ^__^10:43
cfhowlettLeeuwenhok as you already have the iso, you could add it to software sources and skip the download ...10:44
LeeuwenhokAnd how do I do that?10:45
cfhowlettLeeuwenhok http://sumtips.com/2011/05/upgrade-ubuntu-using-iso-image-file.html10:46
LeeuwenhokThanks, I'll have a look at it.10:47

MithrildarHey, clamTK was able to find the following virusses:10:52
MithrildarPUA.Win32.Packer.PrivateExeProte-7 in shimx64.efi and MokManager.efi10:52
Mithrildaris this bad?10:52
MithrildarOh wow it's actually finding more now10:53
Guest9377hey all, so I spined a vps with an ubuntu image on my vps provider but it looks like locale is not prperly defined as some applications are complaining or failing because of it (for example percol) http://pastie.org/9360562 I guess I should fill in tht LANGUAGE line, but i'm not really sure of what it should look like... http://pastie.org/936056210:53
cfhowlettMithrildar this is not the place to search - look online for virus definitions10:53
Guest9377oh sorry, pasted thel ink twice10:53

=== Guest9377 is now known as pete--
MithrildarI haven't visited a funny website, got adblock, ghostery, noscript all running, apparmor10:54
cfhowlettMithrildar clamav, like all virus scanners, has been known to report false positives    http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/applications/200817-clamav-false-positives.html10:56
MithrildarBut it didn't find them yesterday and it found similar viruses in the firefox cache10:56
LeeuwenhokI don't get it. I think I made it clear I want to keep my files and apps.10:56
cfhowlettLeeuwenhok fine.  reinstall grub.  do the online upgrade.10:57
Ben64Mithrildar: upload the files to virustotal and see how many report it as a virus10:57
LeeuwenhokGood enough. :010:57
Leeuwenhok* :)10:57
MithrildarHmm all removed it, probably not the best idea10:58
Ben64Mithrildar: yep probably not10:58
MithrildarStill10:59
Mithrildarit wouldn't make sense that it suddenly found something in the /boot/efi folder right?10:59
Ben64who knows, you deleted it before knowing what it does and if it was good or bad10:59
Ben64see if you can boot10:59
cfhowlettMithrildar similar query yesterday - adobe placed a file in the /boot that the virus scan falsely reported as malware.  it was not.11:00
histocfhowlett: why would adobe put something in /boot11:00
MithrildarIt was in Shim.efi and MokManager.efi though, not the place for legitimate stuff right?11:02
cfhowletthisto it was connected to one of the online services - don't remember the details.  the file itself proved persistent and recreated even after deletion.  thus the "malware" definition11:02
Ben64Mithrildar: you probably deleted stuff you need to boot, you should not have done that. do more research before taking a sledgehammer to things11:03
MithrildarYeah11:03
Mithrildarguilty Windows user here11:04
cfhowlettMithrildar that would do it.11:04
histoMithrildar: Is this a cloud machine you are scanning?11:06
histoMithrildar: and what is left in /boot/efi ?11:06
Behiwhat is 14.04's out of the box system process management daemon?11:07
MithrildarWell this is pretty weird11:08
trijntjeBehi: service11:08
Mithrildaron my computer ClamTK detects a file as a virus, but when scanning it with VirusTotal, ClamAV doesnt detect it11:08
Behitrijntje is supervisor an alternative to service, systemd, upstart, etc?11:08
trijntjeBehi: I dont know about supervisor, but ubuntu should uses systemd by default as far as I know11:09
trijntje!systemd11:09
ubottusystemd has been chosen as the future init system for Ubuntu, please see http://www.markshuttleworth.com/archives/1316 for the announcement.11:09
histoBehi: upstart11:09
trijntje!upstart11:10
ubottuUpstart is meant to replace the old Sys V Init system with an event-driven init model.  For more information please see: http://upstart.ubuntu.com/11:10
* trijntje is confused, you should probably ask someone who knows more about it Behi11:10
MithrildarSo it seems like VirusTotal is okay with those files, so I have some questions:11:12
MithrildarI deleted something in my /boot folder (shimx64.efi and MokManager.efi), I shouldn't have done that what should I do? Should I use Boot-Repair?11:12
histoMithrildar: How many OS's where on this box?11:13
MithrildarWindows 8 and Ubuntu 14.0411:13
histoMithrildar: what's left in /boot/efi11:14
Mithrildarin the Ubuntu folder grubx64.efi11:15
Mithrildarand in the /boot/efi/EFI/Boot there is bootx64.efi11:16
MithrildarSo what should I do in the future? Should I only use ClamTK to scan my home folder and use antimalwarebytes on my Windows installation to keep Windows clean?11:18
histoMithrildar: You should be good. No idea what the other files where.11:18
histoMithrildar: their hash values matched that of a virus.11:18
histoI highly doubt their were two hash collisions in the same location with two different files for two different viruses11:19
MithrildarIs that a bad thing or just a false positive?11:19
histoI think they were probably viruses. Most likely from windows. Since your user doesn't even have access to /boot/efi11:20
histo!av | Mithrildar11:20
ubottuMithrildar: Antivirus is something you don't need on !Linux. except where files are then passed to Windows computers (perhaps using samba), See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Antivirus11:20
MithrildarI haven't logged into Windows since my last scan though11:20
histoShould be when files are passed from windows11:20
MithrildarSo I doubt it's Windows11:20
histoMithrildar: have you tried to boot in windows and ubuntu yet?11:20
cfhowlettMithrildar all the above said, it should impact your ubuntu OS but files sent to windows users might be suspect11:20
cfhowlettshould NOT impact ...11:20
trijntjeMithrildar: in the future, just move a file instead of removing it. Then if something breaks you can simply copy it back11:21
MithrildarYeah I'll put stuff in the quarantine next time11:21
MithrildarSo am I safe to use my Windows or Ubuntu installation or should I look at reinstalling my PC?11:22
histoMithrildar: There is no way they were from linux11:22
cfhowlettMithrildar "reinstalling" is the default windows solution ... don't be that guy11:22
MithrildarWell it would be weird if they were from Windows as I haven't booted Windows for a few days11:22
* histo puts money on it.11:23
* cfhowlett doubles down11:23
histoMithrildar: try as your user ' touch /boot/efi/somefile.foo'   what comes up?11:23
MithrildarNo access11:24
MithrildarOr something like that in Dutch11:24
histoMithrildar: K so how did the virus get put there?  root is the only user that can write there.11:24
MithrildarNo clue, only installed stuff from official repos11:25
* cfhowlett still suspects windows/adobe11:25
histoMithrildar: you found an md5 collision in two files in the same location for two different viruses. afaik md5 collisions were only found in a stupid chinese lab study that was way outside the realm of possibility11:27

GupppBeldar, yeah i know its not the right version, and well out of date, but its the exact same symptoms and description of issue17:49

Beldarbhavesh, All you had to do was run the ppa-purge you should of had the ubuntu repos version than.17:53
bhaveshBeldar, I did, and then I also did apt-get remove --purge later.17:53
Beldarbhavesh, why?17:54
bhaveshBeldar, because I thought ppa-purge only converts 3.12 to 3.10, I wanted to completely remove GNOME at that time.17:54

Beldarbhavesh, gnome 3 underlies unity and other desktops, so your goal was not a good one.17:55
bhaveshBeldar, I mean, the GNOME Shell.17:55
Beldarbhavesh, the ppa-purge reverts you 3.1017:55
GupppBeldar, thats many reports of exactly the same symptoms all consistently reproducible on my installs, but i guess i cant expect everyone to read it all, i did summarize the issue though:17:55
bhaveshBeldar, yeah. And as I have messed things up, is there any way out?17:56
OerHeksjay__, no, unfortunately not17:57
BeldarGuppp, No biggie, you just have to understand the scientific method and reporting issues. In an example If I was writing one of my grad papers and parsed out a sentence to mean what I wanted it to rather than what it meant I would be called on that.17:57
GupppI'm finding that in firefox all menus (main/autocomplete/context/bookmarks etc..) are not displaying after a system suspend, until the window is re-focused.  I'm experiencing it on all 4 of my seperate installs of Xubuntu 14.04 - 3 Laptops (2 fresh, 1 upgraded from 13.04) and 1 VirtualBox fresh - all fully updated.17:57
jay__ok thanks OerHeks. i was just wondering cause it'd be faster. thanks anyways17:58

daftykinsRiobe: is this a desktop? you've disconnected everything to narrow down which device it is i take it?22:12
Riobedaftykins, It's a desktop and the only USB devices plugged in are my keyboard and mouse.22:12
RiobeOther ones are dangling for now.22:12
daftykinsRiobe: do messages go if the kb+mouse are out?22:13
RiobeActually I seem to be generating call traces everytime I put the mouse into a different port.22:14
Riobedaftykins, I don't think it's making any consistent messages anymore about usb. Only makes new messages when I unplug or plug one of them.22:14
EpicRainbowI need some help. I dual booted Ubuntu and everything seems to work so far but whenever I close the lid to put the computer to sleep, when I wake it up Ubuntu is frozen. I can move the mouse but can't type my password22:14
