[02:05] Alright, I can't run update-manager at all, and it gives me this error: http://sprunge.us/WSMM [02:05] What gives? [02:08] The only hits google gives for "ImportError: No module named repository" are quite old (like 2011) and I'm running 14.04 [02:10] And also this is a new install; the computer didn't even exist before this year. [02:23] hi [02:26] esph: try "sudo apt-get install python-gi", looks like your system is missing the python gtk libraries [02:30] bluesabre: nope, already had that. [02:30] I did a standard install, not sure how software-center gets broken that way. [02:30] Also, it worked one time right after I installed, iirc. [02:31] ok, do you have any local installs of python? [02:31] bluesabre: nope [02:31] hm [02:33] so "which python" lists "/usr/bin/python"? [02:33] python3-gi that is. [02:34] oh right, software-center uses py3 now [02:34] bluesabre: yeah [02:34] bluesabre: did that change in the past couple of weeks? [02:34] not recently, I think that's been that way for a few releases [02:34] I'll check anyway. [02:35] nope, had that too. [02:35] Again, it worked once (I installed vim that way) [02:36] right [02:36] does /usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/gi/repository/ exist? [02:36] * Unit193 ponders why any vim user wouldn't use apt/apt-get/apt-cache commands. [02:36] Unit193: here's the output I'm seeing, if you didn't feel like reading up above: http://sprunge.us/WSMM [02:37] Unit193: one reason was because I wanted to test out the ways in which my sister would use the system, since it's hers. [02:37] esph: You'll have better luck with bluesabre, he knows python and might have used USC. I just reminded it was py3. [02:37] And, I see. [02:39] actually, might not be py3 judging by the script... try this: [02:39] /usr/bin/python /usr/bin/software-center [02:39] bluesabre: yeah, I've got an __init__.py and a __pycache__ dir in there. [02:39] alright. [02:40] Depends: python:any (>= 2.7.1-0ubuntu2) [02:42] bluesabre: the output is the same running it that way. [02:45] this is my last thing that might possibly work... [02:45] sudo dpkg-reconfigure python-gi python-gobject software-center [02:46] bluesabre: sudo apt-get --reinstall install perhaps? [02:51] bluesabre: can't even do that: http://sprunge.us/KaVe :/ [02:52] at least that error is more explicit. [02:53] yeah [02:53] sudo apt-get --reinstall install python-gi [02:53] it looks like the python install is messed up somehow [02:54] hmm, think that worked. [02:54] What's strange is there wasn't a problem initially. [02:55] Could this be a strange bitrot issue or something else with the drive maybe? [02:55] no clue [02:55] maybe a python update failed or didn't complete [02:55] ah, yeah, that's probably more likely. [02:57] bluesabre: anyway, thanks a bunch. I probably would have been at it for ages without your help. That initial error message was very opaque :/ [02:58] glad I could help, hopefully it goes a bit better now :) [02:58] Hopefully that didn't happen to any other packages, lol. [03:02] bluesabre: oh, btw, do you know what she might have done that could have caused an update to mess up? (if that's what it was) [03:04] hard to say, maybe power loss during package update? Unit193, any ideas? [03:05] bluesabre: is ubuntu bothered at all by going to sleep during updates? (I'm just guessing that that could have happened, I'm not sure) [03:07] esph: I don't know... I'd imagine that it should not be bothered by that [03:08] I wouldn't think so either, but it was worth checking. [03:13] bluesabre: Could perhaps check with debsums, or check to see what's not configured/unpacked. [06:54] Since a while, when someone sends me a link in pidgin, it opens in chrome, even though Inever installed that. How can I change that? How can I get rid of chrome? [06:55] tried asking in #pidgin ? [06:55] No. Is it pidgin related then? [15:51] Hi all, this is my first time using Xubuntu and I am astonished ! [15:56] it seems like xfdesktop keeps crashing|restarting when I delete files from it - how would I troubleshoot it? [16:00] Alfamoon astonished in a good way? [16:02] Bonjour tout le monde [16:06] of course.. isn't a curse. :p [16:06] derek-g: open a terminal window and run "killall xfdesktop; xfdesktop" [16:06] then trigger the crash again [16:14] brainwash, but where is the actual log? [16:15] did no messages show up in the terminal? [16:15] for session log files you can check ~/.cache/upstart/ [16:16] if you are using xubuntu 13.10 or 14.04 [16:18] brainwash, ill try it a bit later - thanks! [17:57] hello. i have xubuntu 14.04 (upgraded from 13.*) i close the lid on my laptop, and it never recovers. stays at black screen. the color on google chrome is also a bit pixelated in the gray areas. i've tried a lot of fixes, nothing seems to be working. what would you guys do at this point? this makes me not even want to use my computer === mtrd is now known as EugeneBandit [18:20] m1chael: I have the same issue on my netbook upgraded from 13.10, this also happened on upgrade from 12.10 to 13.04. In my case I stopped using suspend/resume until the devs sorted it out. Best advice is to submit a bug report and hang in there. I'll do more research first and then maybe open a new bug. [20:35] fucking dpms [20:38] No cussing. Did you have a question about it or something else? [20:39] Unit193, you afraid of words man? [20:39] Nope, it's channel policy. [20:40] So the entire channel is afraid of words. Nice. Us peasants will be careful with our uneducated sayings. [20:40] I am just messing with you man. [20:40] Sorry about that. [20:40] Yeh, xubuntu seemed to have no effect on dpms. I had a system I just installed it on and the monitor would keep blanking. I could not use the settings control panel to do anything., [20:41] I had to disable dpms heh. [20:43] The interaction between xfce4-power-manager/light-locker and systemd, or the ability to inhibit it, wasn't working properly and that was fixed in a recent upload, but could be a different issue. Even after installing the fix, you had to toggle something in light-locker-settings in order for it to take effect. [20:44] Unit193, you have a link? [20:44] If I update, and toggle that deal, I suppose it will work again? [20:48] Oh bleh, I'm getting the two bugs mixed up, sorry: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xdg-utils/+bug/1309744 [20:48] Ubuntu bug 1309744 in xdg-utils (Ubuntu) "Light Locker blanks the screen when playing video" [Undecided,New] [22:01] hello!! I've got a problem with xubuntu 14.04, can you help me? [22:02] Simple question: where can i find lod file? [22:02] i.e log* [22:03] dashaus: depends. log of what? [22:04] /var/log would be a good place to start [22:04] but not every application uses the default store [22:07] Well, I try to turn proprietary wifi driver on but application simply "ignores" what I choose and I try to find reasons. [22:08] I turned it down and play with ndisgtk (unsuccessfully) and now I cann't get back to propriety broadcom drivers. [22:16] dashaus, go to settings manager and click on "Additional Drivers" You probably have your broadcom drivers in there. it will require a reboot when you are done, but if they are in there they are much better than ndis. [22:20] well syslog is not helpful. The issue is when I choose Broadcome driver and confirm it with my admin pass then there's no effect and in "Additional Drivers" option "Periperial is Not used " is choose again (I use Polish desktop, so forgive my translation). [22:25] I started software-properties-gtk from terminal but unfortunatelly I got no feed-back in terminal about reasons for no-change. Can you advise me? I don't want to reinstall xubuntu. [22:28] can you see the broadcom card in lspci or lusb? [22:32] yes, [22:36] Adrenaline, in software-properties-gtk I can find something like "This device is not working" just below "Broadcom Corporation" [22:42] Adrenaline, lspci shows my wifi but I can't get any error message from sotware-properties-gtk. [22:47] Sorry I am not familiar wiht "Software-properties-gtk," but it sounds like you have a driver but are missing the firmware. Or you don't have permissions to run the firmware [22:58] But it all have worked one hour ago! I only stopped using Broadcome driver to try ndis. After turning it off, I cannot turn proprieraty drivers on again and don't know why. Can any one of you help me, please? [23:06] I gave my grandmother a laptop running xubuntu last week and she seems happy with it. Woo! [23:06] No more XP.
