BosiHello everyone, this message started to appear on Xubunty 14.04 to me: "The update information is outdated. This maybe caused by network problems or by a repository that is no longer available." ... with sudo apt-get update, everything goes fine and no error messages or anything appear... what could it be then?03:12
nico_my ipod classic keeps disconnecting mid transfer is this a xubuntu problem or a rockbox problem05:34
hardlandhello07:39
hardlandI've been using for some time kubuntu, and now I need to install in a pc a bit old xubuntu. Any advice you can give me?07:41
SamwiseGamgeeHow do you search for a file using Xubuntu?07:55
SamwiseGamgeeCatfish?07:57
SamwiseGamgeeCatfish doesn't work, is it supposed to be used for searching for files?07:57

jostHi! Is ti possible to leave new windows in the background?09:50
ali1234you mean like pop-under?09:51
jostFor example: I start my IDE. It takes about 20 seconds  to do so, first with a splash screen, then the IDE-window itself. 20 seconds is long enough for me to do something else - type something in a shell. But then the window pops up, and half the stuff I have typed goes to the splash screen or new window...09:52
jostit should just start, open the window, but be in the background initially09:52
bluesabreSamwiseGamgee, please let me know what sort of issues you are having with catfish09:52
ali1234i don't think that's possible, and it certainly isn't easy09:52
jostali1234: one could09:52
jostali1234: ok :(09:53
SamwiseGamgeethey are resolved09:53
ali1234because reasons... the window focus code in xfwm is "interesting"09:53
ali1234you might want to try a different window manager, maybe tiling would more suit you?09:53
SamwiseGamgeeI was looking in the wrong drives for the file09:53
jostali1234: Hmm, are there other window managers with the XFCE look and feel?09:54
ali1234no, because the window decoration code is also "interesting"09:55
SamwiseGamgeeHey, does CatFish automatically kick in, when I do any search?09:55
bluesabreali1234, jost: for gtk windows, you can set the hint to desktop to make the z-order always bottom, kinda hacky, not sure if that's what you're looking for09:55
ali1234however some themes are ported to multiple window managers09:55
ali1234but wouldn't you have to recompile the software for that?09:55
ali1234or use a window manager that supports window rules09:56
bluesabreSamwiseGamgee, what do you mean?09:56
SamwiseGamgeeI started searching from File Manager, but I didn't see the name Catfish on top09:56
SamwiseGamgeebut it looked like Catfish was doing the searching09:56
jostHmm, I'll change the window manager then, some time... not enough time to do it right now09:56
jostali1234: bluesabre: thanks09:57
bluesabreCatfish pops up from the file manager, but only if you right-click -> "Find in this folder"09:57
SamwiseGamgeeoh, i'll try it again...09:57
SamwiseGamgeeyeah, I think CatFish automatically kicks in no matter how I search09:59
SamwiseGamgeeand Catfish is working09:59
SamwiseGamgeethanks, goodbye10:00
bluesabreok cool, np10:01

GridCube!uefi15:44
ubottuUEFI is a specification that defines a software interface between an operating system and platform firmware. It is meant as a replacement for the BIOS. For information on how to set up and install Ubuntu and its derivatives on UEFI machines please read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI15:44

FernandoBassoHi folks. I think xubuntu is the best ubuntu flavor available. I'd like to remove the "global menu" stuff, though. Is it possible?18:59
HedgeMageFernandoBasso: it's usually a little slow this time of day on a weekend, but hang out a while and someone may be able to help19:03
HedgeMageI don't use xfce4, so I'm not much help in this case :(19:03
Unit193FernandoBasso: Global menu?  Did you perhaps install Xubuntu on Ubuntu?19:03
FernandoBassoUnit193: Yes.19:03
Unit193HedgeMage: i3m or awesome?19:04
FernandoBassoAnd the panel insists in show a global menu like behavior19:04
HedgeMageUnit193: i3 :)19:04
FernandoBassoI'll download and install the reall xubuntu installation media.19:04
FernandoBassoIt is for my wife's computer.19:05
FernandoBassoI have run arch linux on my laptop for years, and just installed ubuntu (unity) today.19:05
Unit193FernandoBasso: Remove indicator-menu or however it's called.19:06
FernandoBassoAll right. I'll try this in a while.19:07
Unit193indicator-applet-appmenu or indicator-appmenu, I'm not sure what Ubuntu uses.19:13

xubuntu766Hello, this is my first time using an IRC for tech support.  I've run into an issue with my user login process on Xubuntu 14.04.  Anyone able to help out with it now?  [Will give more details afterward]20:57
knomexubuntu766, just ask the question and if somebody knows the answer, they will most probably reply21:09
xubuntu766Okay.  I recently ran the update tool and it included a kernel update ending in .30 (approx. 80 MB of updates total).  After running the update, I can log in to my user account, but Xfce won't load any menus, desktop icons, etc.  I had this problem once before in a Virtualbox load.  I was thinking it was a crash from kernel updating, which has occurred with me before.  But, when I usually have that type of problem, I can't even 21:12
xubuntu766With this latest problem, I can log into a guest account fine, and menus, icons, etc. load fine.  I did customize the look and function of my panels on the main account, but am not sure if it is connected to the login issue.21:13
SkippersBossIf your guest account or any other account for that matter works fine the answer should be found in your ~21:15
SkippersBosshave you cleared .cache ?21:16
xubuntu766Nope don't think so.21:16
SkippersBossok i am totally NOT an expert Knome is :-) he is also rather busy <grin>21:17
SkippersBossBut I have found that clraing you /home/user/.cache folder will sometimes help with inexplicable issues21:19
SkippersBossfurther more it sounds like your desktop is not loaded properly your logs should provide any info on what it is failing to load.... Others in hear will be better equiped to help you out21:21
SkippersBossgood luck21:21
xubuntu766Hmm okay.  Are there any files within .cache that I need to be concerned with nuking before doing some blanket command like "rm -r" on it?21:21
SkippersBossnot taht i am aware off. but don't take my word for it21:22
xubuntu766Okay.  Thanks for the suggestion SkippersBoss!  I may do something like rename .cache to .cacheold and make a new .cache folder---unless that's a bad idea (idk!).21:24
knomexubuntu766, no need to create a new cache folder, or back it up21:40
xubuntu766Okay, I may try deleting soon.  I just made a new user from the main account via terminal login.  The new user has a default Xfce desktop with nothing missing either.21:41
xubuntu766Thank you to SkippersBoss and knome!  I got my menus and icons back after a recursive delete of .cache contents.  I was somewhat concerned it would delete my custom desktop by removing the "sessions" folder (which I assume is made by Xfce session manager), but my customizations were retained.  You guys are awesome!21:55
SkippersBosshere to help21:59
xubuntu766And you did too!  :)21:59
