felijoHey guys, thanks in advance for your help. So when I first boot up my computer, literally 9 boxes pop up which each say "System program problem detected. Do you want to report the problem now?"04:16
cfhowlettfelijo do your update/upgrades and reboot04:17
felijoI opened up software updater and that said I was up to date, so then I did apt-get update/apt-get upgrade and the only things it upgraded were libnautilus-extension1a and nautilus-data. Should I still reboot?04:22
cfhowlettfelijo sudo apt-get dist-upgrade04:23
felijoSays I'm already up to date (0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, etc)04:24
felijoDo you want me to copy and paste the info that comes up when I report the problem? Something about a suspend/resume failure04:25
felijoAh so it says "This occured during a previous suspend and prevented it from resuming properly." Last time I suspended I was unable to log in. Box to enter password came up but it would hang as soon as I hit enter.04:31
ikonijnen felijo what are your light locker settings?05:30

Qomy network wouldn't start. some settings have defaulted08:35
Qoi ran 'sudo dpkg --reconfigure -a' and at least i have my network back. but it's not nice that my system decides to die halfway through an update08:36

brainwashyou could compile xfdesktop4 from source or use my daily ppa https://launchpad.net/~thad-fisch/+archive/ubuntu/xfce-git11:10
Ad1will it works without manual compiling? :D11:11
Ad1apt-get update / upgrade, etc? :D11:11

exxTesting12:50
exxOkay cool, that works. Hi. I'm new to Xubuntu, using 12.04. I'm trying to find the equivalent to system properties like Windows has.12:51
baizonexx: hmm12:52
exxI looked under "system" in the app menu but it doesn't have "details" like some versions are supposed to have.12:53
baizonexx: https://apps.ubuntu.com/cat/applications/precise/sysinfo/12:53
baizonthis?12:53
baizonexx: you mean the system info?12:53
baizonexx: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CheckingYourUbuntuVersion12:53
baizonexx: well, but sysinfo should give you all the information you are looking for :)12:54
exxweird, it says that unity is the default system environment, but mine is xfce.12:55
baizonmaybe a bug. Never used sysinfo :)12:55
exxoh. haha. that says "ubuntu" 12.04. not xubuntu. I'm a noob.12:56
baizonexx: sysinfo doesnt detect if it is a derivate of ubuntu :)12:57
exxI meant when I was reading the site you linked, it was saying how to get to the system properties, but it was instructions for ubuntu.12:57
baizonexx: ah yes, i meant the second solution (terminal)12:58
exxsysinfo seems to have worked. Thank you for your help. :) I was trying to make sure I downloaded the right version of Chrome Browser, which gives a choice between 32 and 64 bit.12:59
baizonexx: you dont need to download anything13:00
baizonjust install it from the ubuntu software center13:00
baizonthere you have chromium13:00
baizonexx: https://apps.ubuntu.com/cat/applications/chromium-browser/13:00
exxfair point. I'm mega used to Windows and hunting down programs from websites.13:00
baizonno need with xubuntu :)13:01
baizonall is in one place (most of the time)13:01
exxit does seem more convenient in some ways than Windows. I'm using a backup computer while my main one is in the shop.13:02
dreamerhi all. just did an upgrade on the new lts. somehow it's b0rking during fontconfig13:29
dreamerget a 'core dumped' on lyx. tried redownloading both ttf-lyx and fontconfig-config. still not working :/13:30

Guido1okee, iḿ a bit confused. one xubuntu 14 is set up to share folders with samba. the othe is set up the same after a fresh install, but i can only acces the first with win 95. so where else are settings which i should compare?20:12
robin666hello, i'm having trouble mounting a network share on my laptop with a fresh install of xubuntu20:56
robin666 mount -t cifs //192.168.1.201/Data /mnt/sol20:57
robin666this works fine on my current machine here20:57
robin666but on xubuntu i get a very vague error, nothing useful in dmesg20:58
simpleuserMy brightness control is working, but I only have like 4 steps. Is there a way to add a more precise brightness control (something smoother with more steps)?21:01
simpleuser(When I press fn F5 or fn F6 it’s like it was pressed twice)21:01
weems|macXubuntu is taking a long time to boot after install, is this rare?21:13
weems|macblank black screen21:13
weems|macwith cursor21:14
jessejazzayes. normally loads quick for me21:14
Guido1why do i need a pasword oof i want to acces a folder wooth windows which is shared bu xubuntu?21:19
jessejazzaI don't know - I haven't used winblows for 7 years21:21
jessejazzais the windows folder in a separate partition. Most folk with dual systems i think put files for windows and linux in a separate fat 32 partition21:22
jessejazzaI suppose it depends on the permissions.21:32
simpleuserMy brightness control is working, but I only have like 4 steps. Is there a way to add a more precise brightness control (something smoother with more steps)?22:14
simpleuser(When I press fn F5 or fn F6 it’s like it was pressed twice)22:14
Guido1Iḿ still strugling with samba. I found out that it can have to do something with lanman. Linux can open shared folders omn windows 95 and 98, but if i want to open a shared folder with 95 iḿ asked to enter a pasword which i didn set.22:43
donkeyponganyone else on?22:49
ali1234Guido1: that's because between win 95 and winnt they changed how lanman hashes passwords22:51
ali1234linux tries both, win95 does not22:51
ali1234to make it work you have to tell the fileserver to use the old insecure hashing (not that the new one is much better)22:52
Guido1ali1234: so i have to tell it linux, righjt?23:06
ali1234if it's a linux samba server, yes23:06
Guido1ali1234: yes, it is the server which does not work properly. how do i do that?23:06
ali1234i don't remember the details sorry. it's been years since i had to deal with this. like literally 15 years23:08
Guido1i found something about adding "lanman auth = yes; client lanman auth = yes; client plaintext auth = yes", but is that all?23:08
ali1234https://www.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-Developers-Guide/pwencrypt.html23:08
ali1234https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/samba/+bug/16319423:08
ubottuUbuntu bug 163194 in samba (Ubuntu) "Disable creation of weak lanman hashes by default in samba" [Undecided,Fix released]23:08
ali1234https://lists.samba.org/archive/samba/2010-March/154480.html23:09
ali1234seems like yes23:09
ali1234you just need the middle one, according to that ml post23:10
Guido1ali1234: until now i can see the folder from linux with 95, but if i want to open it iḿ asked for a pasword23:11
Guido1ali1234: itś not working jet. I'm still asked for a pasword23:21
Guido1ali1234: got it23:22
Guido1thanks23:22
Guido1ali1234: ah, linux can acces xp any more23:24
Guido1okee, dose again23:25
xubuntu072hi, im new to this and i was wondering if i could ask a few questions before i install xubuntu23:57
HedgeMagexubuntu072: Yes you can.  Don't ask to ask, just ask your real question...it's IRC tradition ;)23:59
xubuntu072why would i want to use xubuntu over windows 8?23:59
xubuntu072aha okay23:59
