schultzais the newer version of kde out yet? and can i configure it to only have icons showing for active programs?00:38
valorieschultza: you can test the latest crack from project neon: #project-neon /topic for more information and that chan for support00:57
emvalorie: im trying to compile something that depends on libicu48 but that package is no longer in ubuntu repo though it says its supposed to be. But libicu52 is in there. Do you think it makes a difference?01:02

emkingbeowolf: you couldn't find any widget for network management though?03:56
kingbeowolfi found one and i install it but it doesn't have nearly the same about of features as in Unity which is odd because I am in Plasma04:39
kingbeowolfem: ^04:40
emkingbeowolf: that is surprising indeed. Back in an earlier version of Kubuntu I did once connect to a VPN in order to watch the Olympics on the BBC when it was in England. So I do believe it is possible. I just urge you to wait until tomorrow when more people are awake who know more than I do. Sorry I couldn't help.05:08

jarkkoi dont see hard disk from dolphin, what to do?12:46
Avihay_workalso, I removed pulse audio, now I have a few audio devices listed, non of them will play, and I have default, which plays choppy12:46
Avihay_workjarkko: removeable disk? or a hard drive?12:47
jarkkoAvihay_work: both12:47
jarkkoi broke my install when upgraded 14.10, i am now doing reinstall and recovering files12:48
Avihay_workwell, your main HDD is usually mounted as /12:48
Avihay_workI think I lost you12:48
jarkkoi think the problem might be that i have 2 hard disks that both might have /12:48
Avihay_workhow bout you pastebin the output of the command mount?12:49
jarkkohttp://pastebin.com/VSQKfhbF12:50
jarkkoso there are there basically12:50
BluesKajAvihay_work,  what hw is listed in device prefs in system settings>multimedia?12:50
Avihay_workjarkko: also the output of  ls /dev/sd*  might help12:51

Avihay_workjarkko: well, you do have two HDDs, with 3 partitions each12:53
Avihay_workBluesKaj: I guess so12:54
jarkkobut how do i mount them easily?12:54
BluesKajjarkko,  which drive is first in the boot sequence, maybe that shoulkd be checked as well12:54
Avihay_workjarkko has       /dev/sdb3 on / type ext4 (rw,errors=remount-ro) and /dev/sdb1 on /boot/efi type vfat (rw)12:55
BluesKajAvihay_work,  type alsamixer in the terminal, the audio chip will show in the upper left12:56
jarkkoi think grub is at /dev/sda (default when you install kubuntu)12:56
BluesKajjarkko,  yes12:56
Avihay_workit does show. if I run aplay -l I get the localized version of the output from the first post here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=161365312:57
BluesKajAvihay_work,  I just need to know which driver should load, most likely the snd_hda_intel, so try sudo modprobe snd_hda_intel ...then you might need to reboot13:02
Avihay_workdo I need to rmmod ther current one? and blacklist it?13:03
Avihay_workhttp://paste.kde.org/pxeesd7ql13:06
Avihay_workjarkko: I suggest you have a look in /boot/efi, see if your missing hdd is listed there by any chance, I'd also use some tool to see what size each partition has, like a graphical partition editer13:13
BluesKajAvihay_work,  nope it's not intel-hda driver, you need to find the controller, that will tell you what's lodaed13:16
Avihay_workand how do I manage that feat?13:17

Avihay_workoh, ok then: Card: Intel ICH5 \n Chip: Realtek ALC655 rev 013:21
=== Guest1536 is now known as greatdex
BluesKajAvihay_work, seems the driver for your analog out should be,  snd_intel8x0 , try sudo modprobe snd_intel8x0, if there's no output from that command then the correct driver is loaded and should work after a reboot.. that's all I can help with.13:34

Borsihow do i get access into hard disk using live dist?17:04
CrowX-Borsi, open dolphin and you'll be able to see all the disks attached to the machine in the left sidebar17:21
=== poly is now known as SakpiN
CrowX-Borsi, dolphin = file manager17:22
BorsiCrowX-: i know, but i dont seem to have access on them17:22
Borsionly readable17:22
CrowX-Borsi, are they ntfs?17:23
Borsiext4 mostly17:23
CrowX-you should be able to write on ext4...17:23
CrowX-Borsi, are you familiar with bash?(command line)17:24
Borsiit doesnt let me17:24
Borsii have it open17:24
CrowX-try writing "sudo dolphin" in konsole then, and press enter17:25
Borsithat worked17:25
Borsididnt know that's possible17:25
Borsii have writing access now17:25
CrowX-of course you do :)17:25
Borsii just bought ssd driver (my 1st) i am doing reinstall soon, what filesystem should i use?17:26
CrowX-what are you going to keep on it?17:26
CrowX-Borsi, also, how big is your ssd17:27
BorsiCrowX-: it's 128, i think i keep only system files there17:27
Borsii got 1tb and 500gb normal disks17:27
CrowX-install / on the ssd, and /var /srv /home on the non ssd hard drive. you can use ext4 for all of them17:29
bjrohanHi all. I have an error that shows on my system, gist is that kdescreenlocker_greetrc is not writable.  (in the users home directory under .kde) when the message appears it gives the option to click OKAY, but when you click, nothing happens, only thing you can do is shut down the system. I can not find that file in the path given17:29
bjrohanin the error message, any suggestions17:29
Borsiwhat's /var and srv for?17:30
=== poly is now known as skapin
CrowX-Borsi, /var is for files that are being often auto edited and their size changes, for example logs. /srv is just a new directory that's used instead of /var for keeping websites. If you don't plan to install a web server, you don't need /srv17:32
CrowX-and you want /var not to be on the ssd because there's a limited amount of writing you can do on the ssd, and you don't need much speed for /var anyway17:33
Borsihow much linux uses tmp? should i  put that on normal hdd?17:33
CrowX-tmp is in the ram17:33
CrowX-dev and sys too :)17:34
yossarianukCrowX-: by default /tmp is on disk isn't it17:43
CrowX-yossarianuk, isn't it empty by default too?17:44
yossarianuknot if your in an X session17:46
yossarianuki.e kde-[user]17:47

Borsican someone shortly descripe what /usr contains?18:00
bpromptBorsi:     system files :)18:06
bpromptBorsi:     what are you after?18:07
rberg_Borsi: not short but have a look at the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard https://www.debian.org/doc/packaging-manuals/fhs/fhs-2.3.html18:09

Borsidoes anyone have experience having lots of ram on linux machine and using it as cache?18:41
bprompt_Borsi:    yes18:42
bprompt_nothing wrong with that18:42
Borsibprompt_: do you see clear advantages?18:43
lordievaderBorsi: The linux kernel uses all non-claimed memory as disk cache.18:43
Borsilordievader: i know18:43
lordievaderAh ok ;)18:43
bprompt_Borsi:     hmmm yes18:43
Borsiany performance gain if you change the default setting?18:43
Borsii got 8gigabytes currently (only)18:44
bprompt_Borsi:    what'... your concern anyhow?18:44
Borsicould i speed up the machine somehow using the extra ram currently?18:44
bprompt_hmm18:45
bprompt_Borsi:    if you want to really see the processing speed up, get an SSD18:45
Borsii did :D18:45
bprompt_hmm18:45
Borsibut maybe i bought too small :D18:45
Borsii bought today, downloading iso so i can install on it18:45
bprompt_Borsi:    I have an ssd... the size shouldn't matter afaik... so... what's your concern then :P18:46
bprompt_Borsi:    I open libreoffice  3.5 in 1sec, yes is not a typo, 1 sec18:47
Borsiwell i think the future is ssd hard-disks, so its better to get rid off old hard-disks18:47
bprompt_Borsi:   so the cache helps some with disk data retrieval, but in the end, memory will still have to do some standing by due to hdd access18:48
Borsii saw on computer shop (web) a new ssd hard disk and they offered 10 years gurantee !!18:48
bprompt_nothing new.... good selling pitch18:49
bprompt_I mean, I can sell you my used pair of socks with 6months guarantee!!!18:49
bprompt_and of course, charge you extra in the process18:49
Borsibut giving 10 years of gurantee is something...you wouldnt expect18:50
bprompt_Borsi:   for hard drive technology?   surely so, they can go longer than that, depending on regular usage18:50
Borsiif i would make hard disks, i would never give them 10 years gurantee18:51
Borsithat's just too long time of span18:51
bprompt_Borsi:     well... you're not reading the probabilities well, and also the fine prints18:52
Borsii just started libreoffice i am on live usb currently, it starts around 1s18:53
Borsibut it must be cached somehow in memory18:54
bprompt_likely I'd think18:55
