Guest93014Hello World, Complete Newbie here..I'm trying to get Lubuntu running on live CD on a Pentium M laptop (Dell Inspiron 8600 from 2003 if you care). Get an error about 'that processor not supported'. Fo shizzle?09:12
Guest93014Can I try the alternative CD?09:12
Guest93014I wanted to be BobbaFett but space out and that nick is already taken .. Sorry09:13
Guest93014I'll hang around and see what shakes ..09:15
bolloI have lightdm configured to autologin the guest user which works fine and the config gets pulled from a special user. But everytime the guest user gets logged in an error message appears reading "No session for pid 1234". The pid it refers to is lxsession. There's not much on the googles and what I've found don't seem to be related. Any ideas?13:07
marc__hey there, i'm using lubuntu 14.04 and downloaded bluefish some days ago. now sth strange occured. i cannot start anymore from the panel... only as root from the terminal. what the heck is going on?15:16
rafaellagunacan you access the folder where you downlaopded it?15:17
rafaellaguna*downloaded15:17
marc__downloaded it via synaptic15:17
rafaellagunaand you put the launcher on the panel?15:18
marc__no, no... i meat from the "start"-menu15:18
rafaellagunaoh15:18
marc__meant*15:18
rafaellagunawhen you install something all users can access the apps15:18
rafaellagunatry launching it from a terminal15:18
marc__i did that... as non-root it won't start because of a "glib"-error or sth. as root, it works15:19
marc__sure, it's not a big deal... but it makes it less conveniant15:19
rafaellagunaI'm installing now to check15:19
marc__convenient*15:20
rafaellagunaof course, every file you create with will become root-only15:20
rafaellagunaplease, wait, I'm testing it...15:20
marc__so far i've only been using leafpad and geany (sometimes kompozer because of wysiwyg to check some widths and things) for web design, but i liked bluefish's autocomplete and suggestions a lot15:21
rafaellagunaI know, I used Kompozer, but it fills crappy html code, so I use gedit now15:22
rafaellagunaopening...15:23
rafaellagunasorry, but it works fine as normal user15:23
rafaellagunahave you tried to reinstall "by force"?15:23
rafaellagunasudo apt-get install bluefish --reinstall15:24
rafaellagunaor even better, doing that for the library that fails15:24
marc__will try it now15:25
rafaellagunaok, marc__15:25
marc__thanks15:38
rafaellagunadid it work?15:38
rafaellagunabye marc :)15:39
jxshxxI've successfully installed 13.04 from cd 3 times (twice w/ alternate install) but each time I've upgraded to 13.10, it sticks on the splash screen after reboot.  Just tried running Boot Repair from live cd, but that didn't help.  Something I should know?18:32
wxljxshxx: is it frozen? can you open a virtual terminal with ctrl-alt-f1?18:35
wxljxshxx: for that matter, why are you using outdated software?18:36
jxshxxwxl: ctrl-alt-f1 didn't get a response.  I'm trying to use the 13.04 disk I have to load then upgrade to13.1018:40
wxljxshxx: why not 14.04?18:41
jxshxxwxl: Because it had issues when I tried it18:41
wxljxshxx: what issues?18:41
jxshxxwxl: For one thing, I have to turn off something in the panel every boot or else the keyboard doesn't work.  There was also a wireless problem.  The upgrade from 13.10 wasn't good for me.18:43
rafaellagunathe wireless problem is the applet problem18:43
phillwwhich is now fixed :)... the keyboard issue is still broken in chromium, but 14.10 uses firefox :)18:44
wxljxshxx: i'm not sure about your keyboard problem— i'd need more details— but the wireless problem, as rafaellaguna suggested, is as good as fixed.18:44
wxloh THAT issue18:44
wxliBus :/18:44
wxli've tried repeatedly to get the #ibus (dev) channel to respond to no avail18:44
rafaellagunaanother known problem18:44
rafaellagunaanyway we're recommending remove it, I'm about to tell Julien we should use Kylin's language selector, it's better than iBus and no bugs at all18:45
wxljxshxx: long story short, if you get 14.04 we can help you make it work Xd18:47
rafaellagunaand it works better, the whole system, trust me18:47
wxlgenerally supported software does :)18:48
rafaellagunaeven with computers falling into pieces like mine :D18:49
jxshxxwxl: 13.10 isn't supported?18:49
wxljxshxx: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LTS18:50
wxlbased on my estimation, this is the last month for security updates18:51
wxlwhich is18:51
wxlNot Good™18:51
wxljxshxx: if you don't want to update often but still be supported, i'd get an lts version, which, lo and behold, 14.04 happens to be18:52
jxshxxwxl: Well as to "get 14.04" I just opened it up on another machine, so I'm all ears as to "make it work"18:52
jxshxxjust ran update and rebooted18:52
wxlrafaellaguna: problem solved just by removing ibus, no?18:53
wxljxshxx: well here's the bug report for the ibus issue with lots of helpful advice. it's suggested to remove ibus but in actuality, it looks liek the last comment has advice to fix it without removing ibus (in case you don't want to for some odd reason but it will be likely go away anyways) https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ibus/+bug/128463518:54
ubottuUbuntu bug 1284635 in ibus (Ubuntu Trusty) "IBus does not support certain keyboard layouts" [High,Triaged]18:54
jxshxxIf there isn't some reason I'll need it, it may as well go away18:55
jxshxxFind it in software center and remove?18:56
wxlwell it has a utility but it's not playing nice18:56
wxlyes that works18:56
wxlit's not like it can't; be added later18:56
wxldon't sweat it if it tells you to remove lubuntu-desktop which is just a list of packages, not the actual packages themselves18:56
wxlnow the fix was released for the wifi bug but i got to find it18:57
jxshxxsearching "ibus" in installed software shows Input Method (im-config) and Keyboard Input Methods18:57
wxlyou can just `sudo apt-get -y purge ibus`18:58
jxshxxexcellent18:58
phillwwxl: you just need to19:01
phillwsudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade19:01
phillwthat will pull the fix in.19:01
wxlphillw: for the nm-applet issue?19:01
phillwwxl: yup.19:01
phillwthat's why people suddenly reported having two applets :)19:02
wxlphillw: neat.19:03
wxlgot that jxshxx ?19:03
jxshxxwxl: On it!19:03
wxljxshxx: let me know if you need antyhing else19:03
jxshxxwxl: I have 17 applets ...19:04
jxshxxwxl: Kidding.  Thanks  Downloading the Trusty image for other machines19:05
wxlwhoa you had me freaking out for a moment there19:05
wxl:)19:05
UltimaKRHi, does anyone know about lubuntu and graphics cards?19:15
melodieUltimaKR same as for other Ubuntu editions and graphics19:27
melodiewhat's the matter?19:27
melodieUltimaKR what graphics and what issues?19:28
UltimaKRmelodie: I have an older Dimension 3100 with integrated graphics and wanted to upgrade. I was wondering which cards are compatible and how good of one I need to notice a performance difference.19:48
wxlUltimaKR: does this machine have a linux on it now? if so, which one? if not, what specific card is it using?19:50
UltimaKRwxl: It has Lubuntu on it (I think its the 14.04 if that was the upgrade)...it is using the onboard graphics that come with the Intel 2.8 GHz processor19:50
wxlUltimaKR: so you want to add an external card?19:51
UltimaKRwxl: Yes, but aside from the constraints set by the computer (it must be PCI, not PCI-E), I was curious about which kinds were compatible with my linux and how good of a card I need19:52
wxlUltimaKR: ah, i'd say ati over nvidia but at this point both are fairly well supported. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportComponentsVideoCards might be helpful19:54
wxlUltimaKR: how good of a card you need depends more on your particular application than it does the constraints of linux19:54
wxlUltimaKR: here are pci cards http://h-node.org/videocards/catalogue/en/1/1/undef/undef/works_with_3D/PCI/undef/undef19:56
wxloops19:57
wxlUltimaKR: this link http://h-node.org/videocards/catalogue/en/1/1/undef/undef/undef/PCI/undef/undef19:57
melodiewxl nVidia supports cards longer than ATI does, for what linux drivers are concerned19:58
wxlUltimaKR: that other link is for pci cards known to work with free software and will handle 3d acceleration. there are only 2, but that's what i would go for since 3d acceleration saves cpu resources.19:58
melodieUltimaKR can you put on pastebin the output of "sudo lspci -v"  ?19:59
wxlmelodie: not the problem. he wants a new card.19:59
wxlmelodie: i.e. he's shopping20:00
melodiewxl I know, but I still want to see the specs of the chipset20:00
melodieif he wants to provide it20:00
wxlmelodie: well he doesn't know what he wants yet XD20:07
wxlmelodie: his current system works as is from what i gather20:07
melodieok20:09
* melodie gives up20:09
wxlmelodie: no you did good! :)20:13
melodieyou are very kind wxl20:13
wxl:)20:13
melodiegoing, good night20:16
UltimaKRwxl: Sorry was researching. So I will look for a Radeon of some sort.20:17
UltimaKRwxl: Should I look for a minimum memory?20:18
UltimaKRwxl: like 256 MB? is there a maximum too? Not certain what this chipset can handle. I would imagine I am only throttled by the weak as can be 230W PSU.20:19
bodhi_zazenanyone know if you can install lxqt on lubuntu and not "mess up" lxde ?20:22
UltimaKRbodhi: I believe so, but don't quote me on that.20:22
bodhi_zazenOK, thanks20:23
UltimaKRwxl: according to what you are saying, its actually looking more like the Nvidias that are doing well with 3d Acceleration20:24
phillwbodhi_zazen: I still have it confined to virt-manager, I *think* rafael is running it on a machine.20:31
wxli would not advise installing lxqt unless you feel like playing with it bodhi_zazen20:40
wxlUltimaKR: true actually :)20:40
UltimaKRwxl: ok thanks. but what is your opinion on the size of the card? I don't want to invest too much into the old machine, but I want it to do more.20:47
wxlUltimaKR: what "more" do you want to do?20:48
wxlUltimaKR: i mean if you're talking about doing video editing or something you might want to go new :)20:49
UltimaKRwxl: no nothing that extreme. This is a secondary computer for light gaming/videos20:55
wxlUltimaKR: then i'd just look for something better than you have now. :)20:58
UltimaKRwxl: Technically that's anything discrete :) But is there like a minimum that I should go for? 256 MB? 512?21:02
phillwUltimaKR: avoid broadcom WiFi machines :)21:13
phillwjust one less thing to have to fix :)21:13
wxlphillw: he's thinking specficially about graphics21:13
phillwokies, my video is amd and that needed no tweaking21:14
bodhi_zazenjust purchase a linux compatible wireless usb, they go to $10 or so21:14
phillwit is less hassle, and I actually carry t21:15
phillwa couple 'in stock' for anyone in uk who gets stuck as they take a ~ week to ship from singapore :) (They ship world wide, free carriage)21:16
wxlUltimaKR: i'd just pick one of those two nvidias21:16
UltimaKRalright...thanks so much! it is much easier to install them than to pick them lol21:51
UltimaKRand phillw: I already have the wireless adapter. I only need a video card, but thanks anyway!21:52
