Pinkamena_DHey guys, having quite the issue today. I did a do-release-upgrade from 11 to 12.04 and now my server cant boot  with the 'gave up waiting for root device' error18:53
Pinkamena_Dany suggestions to try first?18:53
ikonialook at what device it's starting to boot from18:54
ikoniathat would be a good starter18:54
Pinkamena_Dit uses UUID by default which means next to nothing to me18:55
Pinkamena_DI know it was a /dev/sda device18:55
Pinkamena_Dso I tried putting the three there which I found in a list from the liveCD boot, but they all failed too18:56
WACOMaltHey folks. I have an old outdated server, which unforunately is use for quite a few things (web host with EHCP, bittorrent sync box, ZNC bouncer, seedbox). It is running 10.04. I need to upgrade, preferably without breaking anything...18:56
WACOMaltWhat do you think the chance is that after a release upgrade that everything would work?18:56
Pinkamena_Dseemingly not good from what just happened to me, but other people are likely more knowledgeable then I am.18:56
ikoniaPinkamena_D: so looking at what that UUID is would be a start18:57
WACOMaltwhat happened in your case Pinkamena_D ?18:57
WACOMaltoh sorry, I see18:57
Pinkamena_Dwont boot past initramfs18:57
ikoniaWACOMalt: it depends on a lot of things18:57
ikoniaPinkamena_D: I've old you what to check18:57
ikoniaWACOMalt: do you have any PPA's or 3rd party repos ?18:57
WACOMaltvery likely yes18:58
Pinkamena_Dvery well, I am not used to looking by UUID, how can I get to a non-busybox terminal from the liveCD?18:58
ikoniaWACOMalt: have you checked the software you are using exiss has an upgrade in 12.0418:58
ikoniaWACOMalt: then I think you will hit problems18:58
ikoniaPinkamena_D: check it within busybox18:58
ikoniaPinkamena_D: or boot from live media18:58
WACOMaltlooks like EHCP has support for 14.04, but I dont know if there's an upgrade path18:58
WACOMaltI'm about to tell my partner to pull his stuff off and I'll start fresh18:59
ikoniayou're not going to go from 10.04 -> 14.0418:59
Pinkamena_Dlive cd boots to gui setup, then alt+F1,2,3,4 goes to busybox. Busybox in the server from grub does not show and hard drives in /dev18:59
Pinkamena_Dany*18:59
ikoniaLongCatTH: why ar eyou doing alt+f1 ?18:59
ikoniaoopps18:59
ikoniaPinkamena_D: why ar eyou doing alt+f1 ?18:59
Pinkamena_Dbecause the server disk does not have a simple "drop to terminal" option19:00
ikoniaPinkamena_D: you just said it boots to a gui19:00
Pinkamena_Dgui setup19:00
ikoniagui setup ???19:00
ikoniawhat gui setup19:00
Pinkamena_Dthe "resque system" option is also a setup, which I dont understand19:00
ikoniaPinkamena_D: if you don't know how to use the rescue shell - then you're probably out of your league19:00
Pinkamena_Dnot "gui" I guess, nots like ncurses, but you know what I mean19:00
ikoniaPinkamena_D: a.) use a desktop install going forward b.) boot a desktop CD - backup your data c.) re-install with the version you want19:01
Pinkamena_Dwhen I choose "resque system" I get a "gui" setup step by step thing19:01
Pinkamena_DI WANT a shell19:01
ikoniaPinkamena_D: so go through the rescue setup19:01
Pinkamena_DI feel like that would erase most of the settings I have19:02
ikoniawhy do you feel that - it's live media19:02
Pinkamena_Dits asking me to choose a partition19:02
ikoniait's not doing anything on your system19:02
ikoniayes, to launch a rescue shell in19:02
Pinkamena_DI will reboot and try to go further19:03
jeffreylevesque_Trying to install ubuntu server 14.04 do i select "Install", or "Install Ubuntu Server".  Which do i select?19:22
miceikenhow do you scroll in screens?19:33
RoyKctrl+a and then ctrl+u or ctrl+d19:36
RoyKmiceiken: sorry - ctrl+a - <esc> - and then ctrl+u/ctrl+d19:43

MrQuistHiya guys, terrible noob question here - my ISP has blocked outgoing port 25. (very usefull). i need to port forward my mailserver. Its currently listening on port 25, but can i make a "tunnel" from 225 to 25, whilst keeping 25 alive? This way i can use 225 from home and the rest of the world can just use 25.20:19
Jeffrey_frsyslog question?  How to force past events, prior to setting up rsyslog?20:43
Jeffrey_fcan someone answer an rsyslog question?21:19
qmanMrQuist: you cannot host a public mail server without bidirectional port 25. You can submit mail to a mail server on the internet using an alternate port, like 587 which is specifically meant for mail submission.21:40
MrQuistqman, im not disabling port 2521:41
MrQuisti mean, locally, my own private home use ISP blocks port 2521:41
MrQuistmy server has a working port 2521:41
MrQuistofcourse21:41
MrQuistits bonkers to block port 2521:41
MrQuistbut OK21:41
qmanThat prevents the possibility of hosting a public mail server.21:41
MrQuistso on my server i redirect port 225 to 2521:42
MrQuistand 25 will still work ofcourse21:42
qmanAnd no, it isn't, that's common practice to prevent spambots21:42
MrQuistqman, indeed.21:42
MrQuistand i think its bonkers21:42
MrQuisti connect to my mail server using port 25.21:42
qmanIf you want to host mail, you have to pay for a business account where it isn't blocked21:42
MrQuistI not can't. I think its bonkers. At least let me have an option to disable the blocking21:42
MrQuistim paying for internet21:43
MrQuistim not paying for certain ports on the internet :P21:43
qmanActually you are, should read your contract21:43
MrQuistyes, it states they block certain ports to prevent bots / spam / all kinds of crap21:44
MrQuistbut21:44
MrQuist*wait for it*21:44
MrQuisti think its bonkers21:44
qman25 is meant for server to server mail delivery, 587 is meant for mail submission by clients21:44
MrQuistmeh21:44
qmanHosting a mail server isn't normal end user activity, so its blocked on residential accounts to prevent abuse21:44
MrQuistOkay21:45
qmanYour isp should offer a plan where it isn't, usually for more money and with other benefits like static ips21:45
MrQuisti have a static IP21:45
MrQuistbut its just annoying21:45
MrQuistits the only ISP in the netherlands that blocks port 25.21:46
qmanISPs also usually block netbios and SMB for similar reasons21:47
MrQuisti get it that they block _incoming_ port 25 stuff21:48
MrQuistits just crappy21:49
MrQuistas i use port 25 for MSA21:49
MrQuistinstead of 58721:49
qmanOutgoing is the problem, not incoming21:49
qmanPeople pick up viruses and become spambots, unknowingly21:49
MrQuistyou mean they have a service running connecting to PCś around the world on port 25 and spamming them with HELO i got dem messages21:50
qmanSo they set a bar where you should know better or are at least financially committed to know better, before unblocking it21:50
MrQuistMy thunderbird uses port 225 now.21:51
MrQuistIt works21:51
MrQuistiptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp --dport 225 -j REDIRECT --to-port 2521:51
MrQuiston my mailserver21:51
qmanNo, PCs around the world get infected, then connect to public mail servers on 25, sending spam21:51
MrQuistthats what i said right21:51
MrQuistnevermind i used the word PC instead of server21:51
qmanThat's why outgoing 25 is blocked, they don't want your pc connecting to public mail servers on 2521:52
qmanPublic mail services normally accept client mail (thunderbird) on 58721:52
qmanThe reason for this is, 25 is usually anonymous, while 587 usually requires a login21:54
qmanYou can use any port you want for mail submission (587) as long as your clients know what it is, but for public mail delivery, only 25 will work because that's the standard and what everyone else uses21:56
