_Tailung_Sorry I was gone00:32
_Tailung_Didnt wait for an answer.00:33
_Tailung_So here is the problem:00:33
_Tailung_I canĀ“t get pulseaudio working with jack00:34
holstein_Tailung_: in what way?01:55
holsteinit should literally be setup to work "out of the box".. if you get jack running, you should see pulse sources01:56
holsteinyou wont have something running, and be able to switch it"on the fly".. you should test things like this, i say..01:56
holsteinsee that jack is running.. with something simple.. yoshimi, or audacious. *then*, try something simple again as a pulse source.. any player playing a file that you know is good01:57
holsteindont just rush off to the internet with a flash video, and try and play that through pulse and assume the issue is with jack or pulse or jack/pulse01:57

yabbounohello:) i am trying to connect a midi keyboard to ubuntu (acer c720/ crouton based)12:47
yabbounoit is connected to my pc "lsusb" shows it12:47
yabbounobut i cannot start a JACK server i think because amidi -l results in "no sound card found"12:48
yabbouno"Bus 001 Device 025: ID 09e8:0076 AKAI  Professional M.I. Corp. LPK25 MIDI Keyboard12:49
yabbounoit recognized my midi keyboard already but i cant get the midi signal to the pc :(12:49
yabbounowhenever i try to open aconnectgui it tells me error opening sequencer, but i managed to open it with sudo and then it even shows me my midi keyboard :s12:51
yabbounoqsynth regularly fails at creating the audio server12:53
yabbouno(jack)12:53
zequence_yabbouno: You don't need jack for midi, and failing to start has nothing to do with your midi devices, unless you are trying to start jack using your midi device as an audio device12:54
=== zequence_ is now known as zequence
yabbounohi zequence thank you12:55
zequence!proaudio12:55
ubottuFor information on professional audio tools in Ubuntu, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuStudio/ProAudioIntro12:55
yabbounowell but what can i do.. i am using qsynth and trying to get a signal :/12:55
zequenceIf you need jack audio, then you will of course need to start jack.12:56
yabbounoi only want midi12:56
yabbounoi thought it had to use jack12:56
zequenceIf you are playing qsynth, then it's not only midi12:57
yabbounooh okay?12:57
yabbounowell i can use different software12:57
yabbounoim just trying to plug my midi keyboard in12:57
zequenceYou are controlling qysnth with midi messages (which is strictly data messages)12:57
zequence..but the sound that comes out is pure audio12:57
yabbounoi see12:58
zequenceSo, first, start jack with your audio device12:58
zequence!proaudio12:58
yabbounothis is the weird thing, it wont start jack12:58
zequenceHave you selected the correct audio device?12:58
yabbounoi downloaded the qjackctl12:58
zequenceSo, this is not Ubuntu Studio?12:58
yabbouno:( i dont know ubuntu studio, people in #ubuntu pointed me here because my question was too audio specific12:59
yabbounoi can use ubuntu studio if its good12:59
zequenceyou don't have your system set up for pro audio, but let me show you how to do that12:59
yabbounoah13:00
zequencesudo usermod -a -G audio $USER13:00
zequenceThat will put you in audio group13:00
cfhowlett_#opensourcemusicians13:00
zequencesudo apt-get install linux-lowlatency13:00
zequenceThat will install the low latency kernel13:00
yabbounoah the low latency kernel13:01
zequenceAlso, make sure /etc/security/limits.d/audio.conf is not named /etc/security/limits.d/audio.conf.disabled13:01
zequenceIf so, rename it: sudo mv /etc/security/limits.d/audio.conf.disabled /etc/security/limits.d/audio.conf13:01
zequenceyabbouno: Are you following?13:02
yabbounoim downloading the kernel and trying to check the audio.conf13:02
yabbounobut have to reopen a new termianl13:02
zequenceok, good13:02
zequenceYou don't need linux-lowlatency for audio, but it makes performance much better13:02
zequenceyou will need to reboot and select that kernel13:02
yabbounomy audio.conf is named audio.conf13:03
zequenceThOk, good13:03
yabbouno:)13:03
yabbounoyeah i want low latency13:03
yabbounoi know thats important13:03
zequenceyabbouno: Check this out https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuStudio/ProAudioIntro#UbuntuStudio.2BAC8-ProAudioIntro.2BAC8-1204.Starting_Jack13:03
yabbounoi didnt know i had to have that kernel though for simple midi input13:03
zequenceIt's not only midi13:03
yabbounoyeah i remember13:04
zequenceIf you want the audio to perform well (the sound that comes out), you need low latency13:04
yabbounoyou explained it to me13:04
yabbounoim on that website already13:04
yabbounoreading this13:04
zequenceOnce you have been able to start jack with your audio card (not your midi device), then go to "Connections" -> ALSA13:05
zequenceYou will see midi devices there13:05
yabbounookay the low latency kernel even put grub on my system i dont know why but ok13:05
zequenceIf your keyboard is connected, it will show there13:05
zequenceOnce you open qsynth, or any other application that has midi in/out, it will show in "Connect" -> ALSA13:06
yabbounohow do i start the low latency kernel?13:06
yabbounoi see13:06
zequenceYou reboot, and select it in the GRUB menu13:06
zequenceIf you don't see the GRUB menu, hold down Shift13:06
yabbounowell im on a chromebook13:06
zequence..just before BIOS is done13:07
yabbounoi dont usually see this13:07
yabbounoi run ubuntu inside a chroot13:07
yabbounoi guess this makes it more complicated13:07
zequenceI have no idea13:07
zequenceI would have a computer only for audio and install Ubuntu Studio on it13:08
zequenceMakes things a bit easier13:08
yabbounoyeah13:08
yabbounothis is not my main device13:08
zequencehttp://ubuntustudio.org/13:08
yabbounoyeah its nice13:09
yabbounoi will look into that13:09
zequenceok, good luck13:09
yabbounobut without it, is there no way to get sound from my midi keyboard?:( maybe i should ask in #opensourcemusicians13:09
zequenceThe link cfhowlett_ gave you is good for anything in linux audio #opensourcemusicians13:10
zequenceIn case you have more questions13:10
yabbounoyeah, ty13:10
zequenceLook, the sound does not come for the keyboard13:10
yabbounoill ask there13:10
zequenceUnless you have audio in the keyboard and connect that to a set of speakers13:10
zequencefrom* the keyboard13:11
zequenceIf you are using the keyboard only as a controller, that is all it does - it controls13:11
yabbounoyeah13:11
zequenceIt can control an instrument, such as qsynth13:11
yabbounothats what i want to do13:11
zequencemidi is always on13:12
zequenceif your midi device is working, it should show in Qjackctl -> Connect -> Alsa13:12
zequence..even if jack is not on13:12
zequenceIn order to get audio from a jack application, jack will need to be runnning13:13
yabbounoah okay13:13
yabbounothen my midi isnt working13:13
zequenceYou don't see your device?13:13
zequenceWhat do you see?13:13
yabbounowell i see my midi keyboard13:14
zequenceAbout midi, to make things a bit more complicated - there are two kinds. Alsa midi, and jack midi. But, so far, jack midi is only supported for firewire devices AFAIK13:14
zequenceThe "Jack" tab is for jack midi13:14
zequenceAnyway, that's a topic for later13:14
zequenceyabbouno: Do you see it in Qjackctl -> Connect -> Alsa?13:15
yabbounolets see13:15
zequence(jack midi is also supported on a number of applications - and there are ways to bridge alsa and jack midi)13:15
yabbounoqjackctl says could not open ALSA sequencer13:16
zequencedoesn't matter what it says13:17
zequencejust look in Connect -> Alsa13:17
yabbounoah13:17
yabbounothere is nothing13:17
yabbounoin neither tab13:17
zequencetrusty?13:18
yabbounoyep13:19
yabbouno14.0413:19
zequenceWhat do you see from this command: ls -al /dev/snd/seq13:20
yabbounocrw-rw---- 1 root hwaudio 116, 1 Jul 26 14:27 /dev/snd/seq13:23
zequencegood luck13:26
MungerHi guys! I'm trying to use som midi drum patterns and though I'd try using qtractor + hydrogen. Trouble is I don't seem to be getting any sound out. Hydrogen is playing through jack OK, but I can't see any inputs in gladish to connect qtractor to22:16
holsteinMunger: i would start with a2jmidid22:17
MungerBasically, hydrogen doesn't seem to have any input ports22:17
MungerAha...22:17
MungerI'm a complete newb to midi22:18
holsteini would try running "a2jmidid" and see if the connections you expect show up where you need. i would be looking in the qjackctl connect panel as well..22:18
holsteinMunger: i would try and simplify the setup.. try connectin *anything* in midi just to make sure you know how22:19
holsteinit'll basically be like you say, though.. and should work like you expect, AFAIK22:19
holsteinMunger: try #opensourcemusicians if its slow here..22:19
MungerOK. But Am I missing something if I expect hydrogen to have inputs?22:20
