[07:42] Morning all [07:43] morning sir [07:48] yo [07:48] what lovely weather we're having [07:49] That it is, keep it up I say! [07:49] keep what up? [07:54] The weather! [07:54] he's suggesting it'd be nice the weather stay good [07:54] Lots complaining about it, but I'd rather have it stay [07:54] honestly what is with people today and being unable to follow one sentence onto another :P [07:54] i've not been able to cope personally [07:55] SuperMatt: I'm happy it's a miserable day for a while [07:55] nice to have a bit cooler days with a bit of rain, the lawn benefits [07:55] i have a 17th century townhouse with no insulation, my bedroom was practically 30 deg C yesterday [08:02] diplo: I was confused cos I was being sarcastic as the weather here is terrible right now [08:04] Really, oh.. clear blues skies all over here in the SW :) [08:04] Yesterday was a lot cooler though but it's going to be hot hot hot! today === msm is now known as Guest68820 [08:18] it's quite tropical [08:19] and of course there's a hot air front coming to Finland when I'm flying over [08:29] Good morning all; happy Monday, and happy Milk Chocolate Day! :-D [08:32] happy what now O_O [08:33] Milk Chocolate Day. [08:33] But I only have dark chocolate here. [08:33] oh you're not one of them are you :( [08:33] just bite a chunk off, then drink some milk [08:33] :D [08:34] Works for me. [08:34] I ate all the milk chocolate already. [08:34] Or did I...? [08:35] * JamesTait raids cupboard, finds Minstrels. [08:41] that's quite a small place for them [08:42] And yet there they were, strumming away. [08:46] upturned tipping hat and all? [08:46] :) [08:46] that's dedication for you [08:48] today my cupboards mostly contain wagon wheels, which you would expect would be too big for them too [08:48] I wonder if our cupboards are quite tardisesque [08:58] Tardisesque. Now that's a good word. [09:07] JamesTait: I have mint M&M's I think I might have to eat those [09:08] It'd be rude not to. [09:27] morning boys and girls. First: i have ubuntu 12.04 installed, would it be correct and safe for the machine to run the update manager -d to install the 14.04 version? [10:01] The second question is: how many gb would use the upgrading? [10:01] 1) yes, 2) I don't know, but I don't think it'd be that much. I'd allow for 5, just in case, but it all depends how many packages you have instsalled [10:02] no [10:02] 5gb? [10:02] open update manager and it should prompt you to update to 14.04 [10:03] you shouldn't need the -d [10:03] I'd imagine about 800MB to download for a typical upgrade from 12.04 to 14.04, as SuperMatt says, depends on how much you have installed [10:03] Yeah because now it shows me that the 12.10 is available [10:03] Not the 14.04 [10:04] Perfect! [10:04] an, if you change /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades from normal to lts, it should allow you to upgrade [10:04] between lts [10:05] I wish there was somewhere I could follow on how or if I can get 1404 on this laptop [10:05] And, just in case... If I would insert the bootable pendrive into the machine while booting.... Could i choose an option to upgrade directly from there? [10:05] 'Cause I have dual boot with win7 [10:07] Anybody there? [10:07] :) [10:10] Well now i must go... Thanks guys! See you soon! [10:12] Hei: also you better not have any PPAs [10:15] I thought they were disabled during the process [10:16] i think it disables non-critical repos === daniel is now known as Guest46216 [10:16] it did with mine, but then error'd, "rolled back", and rebooted to an updated system :D [10:17] well Lenovo, i am not impressed with your NAS so far [10:18] out of the box, plugged in, i can SEE you on the network, i know your IP... i see your open ports (80 and 443) yet neither web browsers or your configuration utility can find it [10:18] speak to me! [10:18] clearly it doesn't fancy you. [10:19] :D [10:19] perhaps i need to buy it a drink [10:19] the program is all "sorry dafty, this princess is on another subnet" [10:20] er what, i only have the one! [10:20] alright i'm going IT Crowd on its' shiny metal posterior [10:31] yaaay she's alive! [10:32] :) [10:32] whatcha do [10:39] turned it off and on again XD [10:39] swish. [11:53] Ghandi ? [11:54] gandi* [11:55] 53 domains to move [11:56] gandi is good. [11:56] yeah I use them ( albeit not very much ) personally.. thought I'd see if any other recommendations before I start moving / open an account [11:57] at work we use gandi [11:57] but dns is done through dnsmadeeasy.com [12:01] looking at them now ta === alan_g is now known as alan_g|lunch [12:43] I'm upgrading ubuntu.... It says that it will download about 1000M --> it equal to 1GB isn't it? [12:43] *it is [12:44] Close enough yes [12:44] Ok! [12:44] Thanks [12:46] didn't fit on my usb stick though [12:47] seriously? [12:47] yep, 1GB stick [12:47] 64 bit 14.04 desktop [12:47] that's pretty ghetto sir [12:48] i just picked up a 32GB USB3 with high speeds for £15 the other day [12:48] sure, but i have lots of usb sticks for distro purposes that are 1gb [12:48] that were FREEEEE [12:49] 32gb???? [12:51] I have 2gb ram === alan_g|lunch is now known as alan_g [12:51] lol. [12:51] You'd prefer installing a 32bit o.s. or 64bit o.s.? [12:52] Whith 2gb of ram? [12:53] 32 [12:54] 32gb rAM = 64 bit OS [12:54] 2GB ram , possibly 32bit [12:54] depends really [12:55] on what you are doing [12:55] server? 64 bit [12:55] engineer_: if you'd ever consider upgrading it, choosing 32-bit now could bite you on the ass of course [12:55] Because now i have a 64 bit ubuntu but when i go to the system monitor I see that it uses about 1/4 of ram ad 0%of swap... [12:55] www.linuxatemyram.com [12:55] bear in mind that's how Linux operates [12:55] unused RAM = wasted RAM [12:57] daftykins... Why i could bite me on the ass? [12:57] because to address 4GB+ you'd ideally want to be running 64-bit [12:57] so if you upgraded you'd be all "damn, i should've gone with 64-bit" [12:58] you can't switch between architectures without reinstalling the whole thing. [12:58] Myrtti: you've been dangerously on topic this morning ;) [12:59] Ok! [12:59] one has to try every now and then. I've realised few days back I tend to be ontopic only on #freenode of all my channels [13:00] I'm usually offtopic even in my knitting channel since I've lost my knitting mojo [13:02] * popey just bought one of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0069V248K [13:02] for installing and stuff [13:02] will chuck a spare SSD in it and fill it with ISOs [13:02] popey: that is a really good idea [13:03] especially as it's USB3 [13:05] i remember reading hit and miss comments about that thing [13:05] oh, so you just tell it which ISO you want to use and you can boot from that? [13:06] that's damn neat, I could do with on of those [13:06] because I'm contantly switching out usb sticks [13:08] yeah, you put the isos in an _ISO folder on it, and then pick one to boot from with the jog-wheel on the side [13:08] it presents that as a bootable cdrom and you boot off it [13:10] it's not a bad price neither [13:10] thing is can you not just do the same with GRUB and a folder of ISOs too? [13:10] probably what it's doing :P [13:11] YUMI is all well and good but it breaks so much :/ [13:11] you need to update the grub each time you add one [13:11] yeah, small price to pay though [13:11] nah [13:11] i want to just drop an iso on a drive and plug that into a machine [13:11] not faff about with config [13:15] ^ this [13:16] fair enough, i suppose being as i deal with stuff at the end-user point i wouldn't be changing media often [13:16] yeah, I'm getting new builds every day [13:20] cant wait to go to russia now [13:20] :> [13:21] gonna have to get a new super warm coat -6 -> -10 sounds quite cold [13:24] MAN UP MAPPS [13:25] lol [13:25] :D [13:25] shorts and t-shirt mate [13:25] i thought you were from the north [13:25] (just made that up) [13:26] lol [13:26] im as southern as they come [13:26] furthest north ive been is manchester;p4 [13:26] the north's horribl :D === stgraber_ is now known as stgraber [13:28] north is fine except that it's full of northerners [13:31] mapps: I beg to differ, we met a guy in Lizzard point and the furthest he'd ever travelled was ST Austell [13:31] diddledan: what you classing as North [13:31] davmor2: anything further up than the m4 [13:32] +1 [13:33] anything north of watford [13:33] diddledan: oh so the north of London is North. I think you'll find the Northerns will take great offence stake you out and cover you in fire ants if you include London in North ;) === alan_g is now known as alan_g|tea === alan_g|tea is now known as alan_g [15:00] why is there an leaflet for bluray in my dvd case? [15:06] gah, Dominos are annoying as hell. I made one pizza order ever in London, they continually spam my phone with text advertising, and the optout service doesn't work [15:06] :@ [15:06] dvds are aroudn a tenner? I'm not prepared to put those to the test though [15:49] davmor2: "Originally a valid SIM card was not required to make a 999/112 emergency call in the UK. However, as a result of high numbers of untraceable hoax calls being made, this feature is now blocked by all UK networks. Most UK mobile telephone handsets will dial 999/112 without a SIM inserted (or with a locked/invalid SIM), but the call will not be connected." [15:49] davmor2: and "It has been reported[by whom?] that some mobile phone handsets sold in the United Kingdom may connect calls dialled as 911 to the GSM standard emergency number 112.[citation needed] It is also possible that 911 may be mapped inappropriately to emergency services in some VoIP equipment or private networks.[citation needed] However, the digits 911 could form the start of a normal local number in the United Kingdom, so th [15:49] ah fair enough [15:49] e code is not supported by the public telephone networks. This is simply a quirk of programming. 911 is not the official number and cannot be relied upon in case of an emergency."
