[05:50] hi captine bushtech inetpro and others [05:50] hi theblazehen [06:09] Morning everyone [06:10] hi mazal [06:13] Kilos: figured out what was wrong with my sorting tube [06:13] the side that comes FROM the quarry must be set "Off", otherwise it is also considered a valid direction for stuff to go in [06:13] i wouldn't have expected that, but now i know [06:14] aha [06:43] ugh , looks like gonna have to drag a broken server to PTA today :( [06:43] Microsoft &^$^&$ [06:50] hehe [06:50] i go sort sheep [06:54] Cheers for now everyone [07:15] guten morgen [07:15] Maaz: coffee on [07:15] * Maaz washes some mugs [07:15] hi Kilos, ThatGraemeGuy, Spekko [07:19] Coffee's ready for charl! [07:22] hey charl [07:23] hi charl [07:23] spekko too [07:34] * Kilos cries [07:34] http://mybroadband.co.za/news/adsl/107260-50tb-of-free-adsl-data-for-each-user.html [07:37] oh i wanted to ask, does running something like minetest use more data if fullscreen is used not the small window from default [07:37] no [07:44] ah ty [08:28] Maaz: thanks [08:28] charl: No problem [12:13] hrrrr! :-/ [12:13] * nuvolari snipes Chrome on Mac [12:14] Chrome on Mac won't let AngularJS play with it [12:44] Bye everyone , have a nice weekend [14:10] anyone using bittorrent bleep ? [14:15] Afternoon everyone [14:16] hi bduk [15:00] hahaha I love my company [15:00] our noc (typical of all nocs) lets lotsa crap slide [15:00] my house power goes down for a few minutes [15:00] and I see this appear in the ticketting system [15:00] FAULT SEVERITY: MAJOR [15:00] SERVICE AFFECTING [15:00] IMPACT DESCRIPTION: [15:00] ANDREW_ALSTON switch down [15:00] HAHAHAH [15:01] hi Symmetria [16:34] hmm... [16:34] hi smile [16:37] hi :p [16:43] hi smile [16:43] :D [16:45] how's the weather, warm there too ? [16:46] it's quite nice outside but too warm inside [16:50] hi psychicist [16:50] hi charl [16:51] how's it going [16:53] I am doing well, thanks [16:53] how are you doing? [16:53] i'm good thanks [16:54] I have been thinking of moving back to the Netherlands [16:55] but I still don't know, it depends on the situation at my current job and if I can get another position in a few months [16:57] hmmm [16:57] slowly the economy is picking up here now [16:57] we came out of a bad few years in the job market [16:58] i myself am considering moving to germany [16:59] i'm going on holiday in a week, want to do some touring and check out some nice places to live [17:00] yeah, that's a good idea [17:00] well, I got some offers in Germany and Poland [17:00] for programming jobs [17:00] but I feel I lack knowledge for them [17:01] ah [17:01] well that's what i'm going for, programming [17:01] those job ads are always a bit intimidating in terms of requirements [17:01] i know, i have that too [17:01] goeienaand [17:01] i ignore it, there are always one or two things that i don't have experience with either [17:01] goedenavond inetpro [17:01] but i find that rarely holds you back in practice [17:01] hi inetpro [17:01] ok [17:02] I mean I know Java, C/C++ and some x86 and MIPS assembly [17:02] but there is always something else that they want you to know so it becomes a bit of a daunting task to keep up with it all [17:02] it is all about practical experience working in a development team though [17:03] companies might hire you not only for your technical skill but also your so-called "soft skills" [17:03] that's what I think too and I don't really have that so how should I get it? [17:03] things like teamwork ability, communication ability, etc [17:03] I have very good soft skills [17:03] yeah i took a job as a junior developer a long time ago [17:03] and then just worked my way up [17:03] but the first job is the hardest [17:04] and I really don't feel like staying in support for much longer [17:04] maybe you could even work on some open source projects in your free time [17:04] yes [17:04] yeah support you quickly outgrow [17:04] especially if I have been programming most of my adult life but just don't have a degree yet [17:05] yeah there is a very big fixation on hbo level education in NL and from what i've heard in DE as well [17:05] practically any job says minimum required hbo level [17:05] yes [17:05] well, I went to Delft but just couldn't continue [17:05] doesn't mean to say you can do your job [17:06] yeah [17:06] i mean i see some people i worked with in the past, good people but didn't have a clue about practical software development [17:06] even during the physics curriculum we learned to program Pascal, MIPS and M68K assembly and things like Matlab/Maple etc. [17:06] all hbo people, just lack the practical experience [17:06] I see [17:06] ah matlab [17:07] or you get some real autists, they might be technically brilliant but completely lack the feeling for people [17:07] maybe they are not real autists but that's what we call them where i work [17:07] we have a few of them :) [17:07] :) [17:07] fortunately not in our department though [17:07] I have noticed more of those in CS curricula indeed :) [17:08] or maybe in engineering in general [17:08] yes [17:10] speaking about delft, they do a lot of robotics stuff there [17:10] or was that eindhoven [17:11] http://www.robotics.tudelft.nl/ [17:12] ah this was eindhoven http://tweakers.net/video/8663/roboearth-een-internet-voor-robots.html [17:13] this is also pretty cool, haven't seen this before http://tweakers.net/nieuws/93210/tu-delft-bouwt-autonoom-vliegende-robotlibelle-delfly-explorer.html [17:13] yeah [17:14] I wish I had the money to go back and study there [17:14] yes me too ! [17:14] :) [17:15] but I'll see if I can get a job and do CS at open university and then move to some place where I can work on cool stuff [17:15] ah there is always open university as well yes [17:15] i am now starting to think i should further my studies [17:15] especially into hardware and electronics [17:16] i did my previous qualifications in software only [17:16] only electronics experience i have is breadboarding as a kid [17:16] ah, I like hardware and electronics too [17:17] but i really want to go and do something cool now [17:17] i'm bored of just writing more web applications etc [17:17] been doing it for too long, want to go and do something cool now [17:18] I understand [17:18] I don't know that much about web programming really [17:25] my ultimate job would be to build the software for advanced home automation [17:25] but i don't know where even to apply for a job in that direction [17:25] afaik there isn't much money in that at the moment [17:25] that's what I think too [17:26] it doens't have to be a full-out AI but something into that direction would be cool [17:26] I would love to go back to my applied physics and computer engineering studies and think of all kinds of crazy stuff [17:26] yes, I feel current systems are still far too primitive [17:27] in some places i feel we've made a lot of progress over the last 10 years [17:27] we have really powerful and low-cost low-power computers now [17:27] but we don't yet have the right software to run on it [17:27] that is true [17:27] what the software can do is just too limiting [17:27] and let's face it most mobile interfaces suck [17:28] but who is going to rethink/reinvent the entire software stack? [17:28] besides, a phone is not going to do the dishes and make the coffee [17:28] you don't really have to reinvent the wheel, you just need to build on top of what's already there [17:29] but what's already there is also somewhat limiting still [17:29] but it may be able to control those devices using whatever softwareor firmware runs on them [17:29] software or* [17:29] ah yeah of course, well i was thinking along the lines of full out domestic robots [17:30] but with most devices you also have closed source firmware which is just plain evil [17:30] that do everything related to the household for you? [17:30] well, at lot of stuff at least [17:30] yes, that's the current situation [17:30] at the moment i only have a robot vacuming my floor [17:30] wow, really? [17:30] at home? [17:30] standard roomba [17:30] yes [17:30] had it for almost a year now [17:30] and how does it work? [17:30] awesome :) [17:30] :D [17:31] probably does a better clean than what i can do myself [17:31] it's thin so it gets in under the tables, chairs, etc [17:31] and it has a brush which cleans the sides nicely against the wall [17:31] that's quite advanced then [17:32] it's pretty decent but admittedly robot vacume cleaners have been around for a while [17:32] and it isn't that hard a thing to program [17:32] what would be harder to program? [17:33] we are just in the beginning stages, though [17:33] and it's a good start, I think [17:33] natural language processing etc is always quite tough but not that bad if you limit what can be processed to simple commands [17:33] but yeah a full out maid robot that would do all the house chores would be great [17:34] I would also be very interested in that aspect, also considering the fact that I speak so many languages and also learn new ones pretty fast [17:34] haha [17:34] so maybe a robot that could replace your wife or girlfriend wouldn't be too bad either [17:35] nah you see that's the plan [17:36] then my wife/girlfriend is there only for me :D [17:36] hi cocooncrash [17:36] :D [18:47] 'lo peeps
