like2omgHello. I have been having an issue reinstalling Xubuntu 14.04 for dual-boot on my ASUS laptop. EFI/legacy doesn't matter. Chokes right after GRUB2 downloads, during its install.01:28
like2omgMy laptop is (U)EFI style with GPT partition table. Windows 8.1 is currently happy to run in legacy mode.01:29
like2omgMy method of installation is USB as I don't have any DVDs nor access to plug directly into the router/modem (defeats alternate/mini installation method).01:30
like2omgI also don't know how to remaster (correct terminology?) an .iso via. Windows 8.1. Any help greatly appreciated (and thanks to all people involved in Xubuntu, creating it, or even providing support!)01:32
KekaiHello02:26
KekaiI just downloaded and installed the palemoon browser, just coming off google chrome, I was wondering if there was a way to get rid of the title bar at the top for more screen space02:26
ObrienDavei think, Window Manager Tweaks, Accessibility tab, hide frame of window when maximized. iirc02:30
xanguahttps://addons.mozilla.org/es/firefox/addon/hide-caption-titlebar-plus-sma/02:35
KekaiI tried that02:35
KekaiIt doesnt seem to work now02:36

MFranciscoGsome of you speak spanish?04:17
cfhowlett!es04:17
ubottuEn la mayoría de los canales de Ubuntu, se habla sólo en inglés. Si busca ayuda en español entre al canal #ubuntu-es; escriba " /join #ubuntu-es " (sin comillas) y presione intro.04:17
ObrienDaveMFranciscoG, most of us do speak english. your support question?04:19
xubuntu554I just installed Xubuntu 14.04 32 bit on my old DELL LATITUDE 600 laptop. I can search Wireless network but cannot connect to home wifi. It finds my home wifi but giving error when I enter password. can someone help?? need wifi connectivity as the first step. intel pro wireless adapter is installed on the system and I can see drivers also installed.04:19
holsteinxubuntu554: i would just remove the access point from the list.. sounds like you just have a password issue.. i have also had keyboard issues there at that stage that i assumed were wifi issues04:20
xubuntu554I have windows laptop and macbook as well. tested on both by removing wireless and connecting back using same password. no issue and directly connected. but not on this laptop.04:22
xubuntu554how to remove access point from the list ?04:22
holsteinxubuntu554: sure.. im saying, you have put the password in incorrectly once, and thats causing the issue. or, the number lock or something on the keyboard..04:23
holsteinxubuntu554: i right click on the connection manage and view connections and remove past attempts..04:23
xubuntu554not password issue as I can read the password when I enter. there is an option to check to view the password when I enter04:23
holstein!wifi | xubuntu55404:24
ubottuxubuntu554: Wireless documentation, including how-to guides and troubleshooting information, can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs04:24
holsteinxubuntu554: then, wire up, and make sure you have all updates applied.. "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade"04:24
xubuntu554did that step04:25
holsteinxubuntu554: that step? what step?04:25
holsteinxubuntu554: you have checked for and applied all upgrades? and rebooted into the latest kernel?04:25
xubuntu554connected to wired network and installed all the updates04:25
xubuntu554installed updates by searching in software updates. not upgrade.04:25
holsteinxubuntu554: i would confirm that my hardware is working properly.. i would try other live CD's or supported operating systems.. i would try doing *exactly* what i suggested above if you feel you have not installed all upgrades04:26
xubuntu554I had Windows XP before on this and wireless was working on that.04:27
xubuntu554it is just after installing Xubuntu, here it is not connecting.04:28
xubuntu554I believe hardware is working as the wireless networks are detecting. it is just when I enter password, it is not connecting and asking for password again.04:29
xubuntu554is there any logs that I can review and see if any errors generating?04:29
holsteinxubuntu554: try and be certain.. if you "believe", just try and isolate that and test.. with a live CD or supported operating system04:30
xubuntu554ok will check out with live CD or other OS. Thanks.04:31
holsteinhttp://askubuntu.com/questions/258616/how-can-i-debug-my-wireless-problem04:32
holsteinthough, i think your issue is going to come down to something much simpler.. feel free and try #ubuntu as well cheers and good luck04:32
xubuntu554Ubuntu is making laptop too slow as It has only 1 GB RAM. but Xubuntu is working fine so far except this wireless connection04:33
xubuntu554checking the link which you just sent04:33
holsteinxubuntu554: xubuntu *is* ubuntu, friend.. im suggesting trying #ubuntu , the channel..04:34
xubuntu554hmmm k.04:34
holsteinxubuntu554: has the device *ever* worked in linux?04:35
xubuntu554yes I had installed CentOS last year and it was working. after that had XP on that till yesterday when I installed Xubuntu.04:36
xubuntu554I ran this command: dmesg | grep <your module>04:37
xubuntu554I can see message : fatal interrupt. Scheduling firmware restart04:37
holsteinok.. you can try a more populous channel, such as #ubuntu, where someone may be able to look at a paste of that and help.. otherwise, i personally  try live CD's til something supports the hardware, and im sure its functioning.. then, i'll just swap chips out if needed..04:38

samwisegamgeeWhat are the xubuntu-restricted extras used for?  What purpose do they serve?07:54
cfhowlettsamwisegamgee, stop playing.  as we told you in the main channel several times ... all this was explained an hour ago.07:54
ObrienDave!crosspost | samwisegamgee07:54
ubottusamwisegamgee: Please don't ask the same question in multiple Ubuntu channels at the same time. Many helpers are in more than one channel and it's not fair to them or the other people seeking support.07:54
samwisegamgeeOk, I will google, "xubuntu-restricted extras" and see what I find, since you have no knowledge of those extras07:55
cfhowlett... lol07:55
ObrienDavesamwisegamgee, no, we have no interest in helping you because you DON'T listen07:56
cfhowlettObrienDave, no no - let him throw his passive-aggressive insults07:56
ObrienDavecfhowlett, ok, my bad, sorry, snark away ;P07:57
samwisegamgeeI reviewed your instructions with respect to xubuntu restricted extras, and it appears that they serve no useful purpose.  However, I think the Synaptic Package Manager is useful07:57
cfhowlettsamwisegamgee, so your probllem is solved then?  good work!07:57
samwisegamgeeI am still going to google "xubuntu-restricted-extras" to reinforce my decision about their being useless07:58
ObrienDavehave fun07:59
samwisegamgeeDoes anyone know how to use APT?08:27
knomesamwisegamgee, ask the real question and let's find out.08:27
samwisegamgeeIt's called Advanced Package Tool08:28
samwisegamgeeI'm using Xubuntu 14.04, so does that mean it's already built into my system?08:28
knomeyes.08:28
samwisegamgeeOk, how come I can't find it anywhere?08:29
knomesamwisegamgee, unless you don't have a real support question, please stop messing around.08:29
ObrienDaveyou run it with the command apt-get08:29
cfhowlettsamwisegamgee, given your history, you really should stop08:29
samwisegamgeeI cann only find Ubuntu Software Centre08:30

cfhowlettsamwisegamgee, few changes = still valid08:51
cfhowlettsamwisegamgee, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoftwareUpdates08:52
samwisegamgeeWill that manual help me to choose the right categories for Ubuntu software updater?08:52
cfhowlettsamwisegamgee, just leave the defaults in most cases works fine08:52
bazhangyou want "from the command line" samwisegamgee <-----> apt-get is the one you want , the link I just gave you. take some time to read the links we've already given you, which is quite a few.08:52

samwisegamgeeshould I look for Canonical partners in the Index?08:55
bazhangsamwisegamgee, have you already finished the apt-get stuff?08:55
cfhowlettsamwisegamgee, asking the questions you actually are seeking answers to would help.  read the index08:56
samwisegamgeeNo, I am still trying to figure out how to user the software updater08:56
samwisegamgeeI am looking for information on Canonical partners08:56

samwisegamgeeis there a canonical channel here?09:01
cfhowlettsamwisegamgee, nope.09:01
samwisegamgeelooks like there is a private one, but it's restricted09:02
knomesamwisegamgee, unless you have a real support question and are willing to read the answer people give you, please leave09:02

knomesamwisegamgee, have fun.09:03
cfhowlettsamwisegamgee, good move.  enjoy the learning.09:03

cfhowlettsamwisegamgee, right.  so stop posting, go learning.09:07

nomicok thanks knome09:13
zacwallsany suggestions?09:14
nomic "mount -t tmpfs -o size=256M tmpfs /tmp/ramdisk/"09:14
knomenomic, you can add it to fstab with the user option and you should be able to mount it as a regular user09:14
nomici can do that from fstab?09:14
nomicso I allocate ramdisk using a startup09:14
nomicor on startup .. then it'll fstab mount it09:14
Unit193'mount -a` can be run as user and will mount all things in fstab.09:14

cfhowlettsamwisegamgee, you mean ... instead of looking on the libreoffice site?  OK>  head to youtube13:55
samwisegamgeeI installed the Synaptic Package Manager13:55
samwisegamgeeYeah, the Libre Office website was not helpful, nor were its forums13:55
cfhowlettsamwisegamgee, so you know how to install software.  Install it, test it and decide if you need it.13:56
cfhowlettsamwisegamgee, if you don't like/need it, delete it.  done.13:56
samwisegamgeeI also followed your advice about installing xubuntu restricted extras successfully, thanks13:56
cfhowlettsamwisegamgee, sounds like you'13:57
cfhowlettyou've figured out quite a few things today.  Progress!13:57
samwisegamgeeYes, but I never expected the Libre Office add ons to be so challenging.  I didn't realize that installing Libre Office would be so difficult13:58
Luyinsamwisegamgee: what add-ons do you actually need?13:58
cfhowlettsamwisegamgee, what makes you think you need the add-ons?  have you USED the program and found shortcomings?13:59
samwisegamgeeI just neede the add ons that will help me do word processing on Libre Office, and for using PDFs13:59
samwisegamgeeand using various fonts13:59
cfhowlettsamwisegamgee, librewriter.13:59
samwisegamgeeyes13:59
cfhowlettsamwisegamgee, pdf printing is supported.  no add -on14:00
cfhowlettsamwisegamgee, fonts don't come from libreoffice.  install the fonts and then choose them with libreoffice14:00
samwisegamgeeversion 4.3 has add ons for manipulating PDFs, I think14:00
samwisegamgeebut that verrsion is not suppported by my package manager14:01
cfhowlettsamwisegamgee, so use the  terminal.14:01
samwisegamgeeuse the terminal to install LibreOffice 4.3?14:01
cfhowlettsamwisegamgee, of course.  the package manager merely gives you a nice gui.  the REAL work is terminal based.   remember those APT links you didn't feel like reading?  all explained there14:02
baizonsamwisegamgee: http://askubuntu.com/questions/505368/how-to-update-libreoffice-from-4-2-to-4-3-in-ubuntu-14-04-1-lts14:02
cfhowlettsamwisegamgee, sudo apt-get install pacakgename14:02
cfhowlettsamwisegamgee, in face you could even download the .deb directly from libreoffice and use the terminal to install that way as well.14:03
cfhowlettin *fact*14:03
samwisegamgeethat still doesn't help me figure out how to install Libre office, unless I can do it all with the terminal14:05
knomesamwisegamgee, sudo apt-get install libreoffice14:06
cfhowlettsamwisegamgee, see you're doing it again.  sudo apt-get install libreoffice                READ14:06
samwisegamgeeOk, I'll read baizon's link, and see if that helps14:06
cfhowlettlol.    i'm so done.14:07
cfhowlettOK14:07
samwisegamgeeRead it where?14:08
samwisegamgeedoes that command line produce a man before it installs LibreOffice?14:08
cfhowlettsamwisegamgee, dude.  you were sent the command THREE TIMES and didn't read it so .. no more14:08
* cfhowlett thinks " fair enough" 14:08
samwisegamgeetest14:09
knomesamwisegamgee, now stop playing or you will get banned.14:09
samwisegamgeeinstalling software is not playing, a lot of time and money is involved, so I hope you will respect the rules, knome14:11
knomesamwisegamgee, the feeling is mutual; though there is no money involved.14:11
cfhowlettmoney?  MONEY?  no I KNOW you here to waste time14:12
knomesamwisegamgee, i've sent you the guidelines for reference.14:12
samwisegamgeethanks, knome14:12
knomesamwisegamgee, and remember, it's your last chance to follow them14:13
samwisegamgeeOk, I will read them again, knome14:13
Luyinsamwisegamgee: this might help (really the last thing for today): http://explainshell.com/explain?cmd=sudo+apt-get+install+libreoffice14:14
samwisegamgeethanks, Luyin14:15
samwisegamgeebut knome expelled me from this channel, and I lost one of the links posted in this room related to Libre Office installation, I can't even remember who posted it14:17
Luyin<baizon> samwisegamgee: http://askubuntu.com/questions/505368/how-to-update-libreoffice-from-4-2-to-4-3-in-ubuntu-14-04-1-lts14:18
samwisegamgeeyes, it was baizon, thanks14:18
Luyinsry for highlighting14:18
samwisegamgeethe highlighting is good14:18
samwisegamgeeI will bookmark the links in case I get expelled again14:19
samwisegamgeecfhowlett, you still here?14:38
knomesamwisegamgee, if you have a support question, just ask it. no need to ping specific people.14:39
samwisegamgeehttp://askubuntu.com/questions/505368/how-to-update-libreoffice-from-4-2-to-4-3-in-ubuntu-14-04-1-lts ....that link makes sense, except for the part about ppa, I will try googling to make sense of ppa14:48
knomesamwisegamgee, you don't need to tell us you are googling.14:48

ObrienDaveyour account is an administrator account?20:26
Shane_____I think so..from what I have gathered, the first account that you create has automatic admin perms, but I am not sure20:27
ObrienDavenot true20:27
Shane_____Well then how would I check20:27
ObrienDavego to settings, users and groups20:27
ObrienDaveunder your name you will see account type20:28
elfyShane_____: the account created during install will have sudo rights20:29
Shane_____well this is amazing...The account says custom, but to be able to get into that it requires a password, which does not work with my account password20:29
ObrienDavethen why does his password not work for sudo?20:30
elfyShane_____: tried resetting it in recovery mode?20:32
Shane_____ya I tried to do something like that but I kind of got lost20:32

mecklenI'm on x86/64 14.04 and I lost my audio after a recent update.  I reinstalled alsa and pulseaudio, rebooted and my audio is back.  Now the volume control applet disappeared.  I installed xfce4-mixer but it isn't the same applet I had before.  The old applet had gmusicbrowser controls for next/prev/pause as well as a button for advanced sound control.  Any idea how I can get the previous functionality back?  Thanks!21:00
ObrienDavethe app is called sound menu, i think21:02
Unit193indicator-sound, actually.21:03
mecklenThanks!  Okay, I've installed indicator-sound (and indicator-sound-gtk2) but I cannot find the applet in the panel add items list.  Do I need to logout/in (or reboot!)?21:06
Unit193mecklen: It's in the indicator plugin, not it's own seperate plugin.  Also, indicator-sound-gtk2 is useless to you.21:08

renso_after*23:47
shane____so in the root area of recovery mode, I do sudo passwd?23:48
renso_yes23:48
shane____su will be the username?23:50
renso_nono su, is a command than permit you (as root for example) login in another acout, like "su user1" or "su user3"23:51
renso_for default, in ubuntu, you dont have access su, is reemplace with sudo, for security reason, when you enable SU, you can login in root shell, and work free, if you dont use su, you need do a "sudo" for every comamnd you want run as root23:52
shane____hey dave...have any help i might as well get aI second opinion, so far all that I am getting I will need to get into the root account23:54

ObrienDavei would suggest reformatting the drive during install23:57
shane____why is tht23:57
ObrienDavemakes sure no residual files or settings affect the outcome23:58
