|zer0|hey all, easy question for someone to answer however I bet most ppl will suggest differently!01:52
|zer0|Where to install applications on linux? what is the most appropriate location (folder)?01:53
|zer0|I use /opt at one stage but considering you have to be root I cant be botheres doing that all the time/01:53
garandil|zer0|, you can place it in /opt, but make sure you set the permissions correctly..01:56
garandilFor small scripts and such I use /usr/local/bin01:56
|zer0|I am talking apps in general with mutiple folders01:56
|zer0|for instance lighttable code editor, I installed this in /opt that was my first install outside using ubunt software centre  :)01:57
Buuntu_my laptops feels really hot but neither lm-sensors or hddtemp show anything out of the ordinary, is there anything else worth checking?02:41
Buuntu_like imo way too hot02:42
holsteinBuuntu_: not really.. i have found in the past that GPU driver was relevant for that..02:49
Buuntu_holstein, yeah that was my guess, but it's a laptop with an integrated intel GPU02:50
holsteinBuuntu_: still, if its a windows sticker on the box, like i assume it is, you can have hardware that doesnt support linux well02:51
holsteini would physically clean the unit, and try running the bios and see if it gets hot there, or reports. then, try a supported operating system, and maybe a few live CD"s with different kernel versions on the hardware02:52
Buuntu_holstein, yeah :(, maybe it's redshift.  i found that f.lux (which is similar) was often taking up 100% cpu.  i can't even find redshift as a process but it might be taking up a lot of GPU power02:52
Buuntu_holstein, i never remember it getting this hot in Windows but i will check again later02:53
Buuntu_holstein, different kernels - interesting.  hadn't thought of that but good idea02:54
holsteinBuuntu_: the live CD will also take redshift and whatever else from the equation03:02
Buuntu_holstein, true, i was hoping for a way to check my GPU temp but i think that's impossible considering it's not a dedicated one03:03
holsteinBuuntu_: its always possible for the GPU vendor to provide you a tool for that in linux03:04
holsteinBuuntu_: intel usually do pretty well supporting linux, however03:04
Buuntu_holstein, Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09) is my graphics card03:05
Buuntu_which i think is just built in as part of the CPU03:05
holsteinBuuntu_: sure, and they usually support linux well, but they didnt promise you linux support..03:06
Buuntu_right, i mean i'm not complaining too much03:06
quantibilityis there anyone here that can direct me to a place where i can have someone help me set up my Apache2?03:12
quantibilitycause im getting really fustrated over here03:12
holsteinquantibility: you can try the server channel03:12
holstein!server03:12
ubottuUbuntu Server Edition is a release of Ubuntu designed especially for server environments, including a server specific !kernel and no !GUI. The install CD contains many server applications. Current !LTS version is !Trusty (Trusty Tahr 14.04) - More info: http://www.ubuntu.com/products/whatisubuntu/serveredition - Guide: https://help.ubuntu.com/12.04/serverguide/C/ - Support in #ubuntu-server03:12
quantibilitythanks03:12
holstein!apache03:16
ubottuLAMP is an acronym for Linux-Apache-MySQL-PHP. However, the term is often used for setups using alternative but different software, such as Perl or Python instead of PHP, and Postgres instead of MySQL. For help with setting up LAMP on Ubuntu, see  https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ApacheMySQLPHP - See also the Server CD installation process.03:16
Buuntu_holstein, i found the package "intel-gpu-tools" which lets you monitor gpu usage.  usage is close to 0% so it might not be the gpu03:18
quantibilityi should invest in a gun... hard to have simple questions answered.. blow my brians out waiting03:19
holsteinquantibility: sure.. stop waiting.. try the documentation.. also, use the #xubuntu-offtopic to chat03:20

ubottuIf you're having problems with sound, click the Volume applet, then Sound Preferences, and check your Volume, Hardware, Input, and Output settings.  If that fails, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Sound - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting - http://alsa.opensrc.org/DmixPlugin - For playing audio files,  see !players and !mp3.08:28

goneeurohi guys. Is there a reason you can think of why gparted keeps getting held back on an apt-get upgrade on 14.10?13:05
cfhowlettgoneeuro, ask in #ubuntu+1 for 14.10 support13:06
cfhowlettgoneeuro, and it MIGHT be held back cuz 14.10 is still only in - what? alpha 2?  not even BETA?13:07
goneeuroYeah. thats what I was thinking. Seemed like everything else was updateing fine. So I thought maybe I had to change something.13:08
cfhowlettgoneeuro, until release, all developing distros are supported only #ubuntu+113:09
goneeurook. I posted over there too. Thanks for the headsup.13:09
attraperevesHi, my computer is completely freezing at the login screen. The mouse and keyboard do not respond. Restarting the computer usually works, but sometimes I have to restart it 3 or 4 times. Any ideas?14:06
Golynx-You need the correct drivers14:07
attraperevesGolynx, my system has Intel onboard graphics. I didn't think that Intel graphics usually cause problems.14:10
cfhowlettattrapereves, intel graphics driver is preferable if available - which it is; 1.0614:11
attraperevesThis is the last error I see in /var/log before restarting the computer:14:17

gumble__I have an live usb stick here with a xubuntu version on it. is there a quick way to check if it is 32 or 64 bit without restarting my pc and booting from the stick?18:59
bekksgumble__: Just take a look at "uname -a"19:04
gumble__bekks, probs would be, that as I said I don't want to boot from the stick. but found a solution already, so thanks anyway19:05
bekksgumble__: So whats your solution?19:05
gumble__bekks, on the stick is a md5sum.txt, in there are a few lines at the end which contain '...i386...', so I guess it is 32 bit :)19:06
bekksgumble__: Can you pastebin that file?19:07
gumble__yes, I can, wait a sec..19:07
gumble__bekks, http://pastebin.com/qSqMMdv319:08
gumble__why do you need it?19:08
bekksBecause "...386..." is pretty generic :)19:08
gumble__ah ok, but looking at the file you too would say it is 32 bit right?19:09
gumble__the lines I meant are at the bottom of the paste19:09
