Ham62after I restarted my server I couldn't get nginx to launch again02:49
Ham62anyone have a idea as to how I could fix this?02:50
AbhijitHam62, whats the actuall error you get? do you mean cron is failing to start nginx or you manually do servire nginx start and it fails?02:51
Ham62it's not loading02:51
Ham62after I type the loading command it doesn't do anything02:52
Ham62it just sits there and when I check the status it says it hasn't started02:52

apb1963  i'm having problems connecting over wireless.  At the moment, I'm using wicd.  It seems to get stuck on "Verifying AP association...".   Without wicd I can get the connection up and ping the Net - but if I take eth0 down, my wireless goes away too.  wicd is the only way I can bring eth0 back (which is the main reason I'm using it).04:20
apb1963I asked in #ubuntu and #networking, so far no response...  Been googling for 2 days straight.04:23
sarnoldapb1963: maybe askubuntu.com? be sure to include details like how you bring eth0 down and log entries..04:37
apb1963hmm04:38

sarnoldapb1963: which question is yours? I don't spot it on the list..05:20

apb1963It says "Welcome back .... You've been logged in.  You are being redirected"... and it keeps recycling that, over and over.05:21
sarnoldapb1963: wow :)05:21
apb1963So I can't ever get to the asking questions part05:21
sarnoldapb1963: try visiting one of the other sites in the network, e.g. stackoverflow.com, maybe that'll poke it in the eye05:22
apb1963yeah... I'm an over-achiever05:22
apb1963sure, why not05:22

apb1963why do all the "forgot password" links always ask you for the email address?  It knows the email address I just tried to use, why can't it pre-fill it for me?05:33

I am using vhost_alias for home folder site by subdomain.  everything works fine.  however users can also view and list other users /home folders.  what is the best permission set to use on the /home/user/ and /home/user/html folders, so that each user cannot cd into another's home, list files, etc.  BUT, still allow apache2 to serve up the pages with out the "Forbidden" issue?13:29

BlackthornHi, i currently run citrix xen server 6.2.0 with server windows 2003 servers on each machine.  For finical reasons and to increase the speed of dns look up's and website delivery I'm wanting to replace them with ubuntu server edition.15:29
Blackthorndo you know if the server edition will run on xen server 6.2.0 and how secure is it after a fresh install?15:30

apb1963sarnold: http://askubuntu.com/questions/514555/ubuntu-12-04-wifi-not-working  According to the respondant's profile, he's 15 and has been using Linux since 2001.  Is my math off, or was he 2 years old when he first started using Linux?18:49
sarnoldapb1963: you got the dougie houser of linux!18:50
apb1963yeah, and one that  didn't even answer the question... just some general "clean this up" "advice".18:51
apb1963Have I told you how much I hate stackexchange?18:52
sarnoldyeah, for about ten minutes :D18:52
apb1963It forces you to do extra, unnecessary work.18:53
apb1963Oh, so I gave you the abbreviated version then?18:53
apb1963Oh well, I shouldn't complain about free & people that are just trying to make the world a better place.  I apologize to them for ranting.18:54
sarnoldapb1963: I think you're going to have trouble with both eth0 and wlan0 in the same network and up at the same time18:56
apb1963so ubuntu can't handle two interfaces at once?18:57
apb1963actually if you read it carefully, you'll see that it ONLY worked WITH two interfaces... removing the eth0 interface made it fall down.18:58
apb1963ubuntu (linux?) networking is a mess.  I explored various incarnations of up, down, add, delete, etc. and the results were... unexpected to put it nicely.18:59
sarnoldapb1963: more that the routing tables don't take kindly to it. if you had two different networks on wired vs wireless, you'd put a gateway on one of them only, and be done with it. but you've got gateways on both..19:00
apb1963I'm not sure I quite understand... but if in fact I had two different networks, it seems to me that I would HAVE to have a gateway for each - not a default gateway mind you... there can only be one default... perhaps that's what you're saying?19:03
sarnoldapb1963: with ethernet, you normally configure routing rules for your NIC that know how to reach the whole network; there's no need for a gateway unless you want to use that network to route your packets to the rest of the internet..19:05
apb1963even so... if i take down the eth0 interface (and provided the routing table is cleaned up properly - which appears to be an area that needs work) then all packets should route through the wireless... yet NONE do so, which is the problem.  Remove eth0 and wlan0 falls down.19:06
apb1963well, I would say there's a need for a gateway - if you have a need to route packets elsewhere for whatever reason.  Since I have just a miniscule network, I have no such reason.19:07
sarnoldapb1963: the tools probably assume that you've configured your networks differently19:08
apb1963you're probably right.  So, with that said... how the heck do I get this working?19:09
apb1963with both interfaces up, I can ping the Net through the wlan0 interface.  As soon as I remove eth0, wlan0 stops working.19:09
sarnoldyou don't want both nics up at once19:10
apb1963As soon as I remove eth0, wlan0 stops working.19:10
sarnoldI don't know wicd at all, but it sounds like it fights against the /etc/network/interfaces method, if our friend chili555 is right19:10
sarnoldoh yikes19:11
sarnold I shld have actually looked into what wicd does last night.19:11
sarnoldyeah, either stop using wicd or stop using /etc/network/interfaces :) your choice, hehe19:11
apb1963Maybe, maybe not.  I watched it's log and it appears to simply use the various tools available... running scripts, using ifconfig and whatnot19:11
apb1963I already stopped using wicd....19:12
sarnoldpurged and all?19:12
apb1963at the 15 year old's suggestion.19:12
apb1963not purged... just, stopped.19:12
apb1963it's not running19:12
sarnoldit might have left tendrils elsewhere, purging might make sense19:12
apb1963you're right.  It's got tendrils running.19:13
apb1963Package wicd is not installed, so not removed19:13
apb1963it's hiding19:13

apb1963and now it's unassociated19:19
sarnoldifup and ifdown are annoying creatures; if you change your /etc/network/interfaces file you can sometimes lodge them in unhappy. reboots are often the easiest way to bring things to normal with those goofy tools.19:19
apb1963well, what I've been doing is clearing out all the tables19:20
apb1963ifconfig down <each interface>19:20
apb1963followed by deleting any leftover routes19:21
apb1963when I get no response to ifconfig, I add back the devices starting with lo19:21
apb1963for some reason, adding back lo also adds back eth0.... even though it's commented out of /etc/network/interfaces19:22
apb1963that's ifconfig lo19:22
apb1963up19:22
apb1963but yeah, it's true I haven't tried rebooting with just wireless configured.  I suppose I should try that... I just don't like rebooting.19:23
sarnoldapb1963: ifconfig lo  adds in eth0? o_O19:24
apb1963weird huh?19:24
apb1963try it :)19:24
apb1963I'll repeat... networking is a mess.19:24

apb1963thank you19:40
apb1963apparently I have lots of avahi tendrils19:40
qman__apb1963: any that start with ii are installed, rc are removed but configuration remains (was not purged)19:41
apb1963thanks for that.  I appear to have a mixture.  The daemons are rc, but the libs are ii.19:43
qman__Libraries don't do anything on their own and are fine19:45
