zartooshHi during installing of ubuntu packages I get sometime stall for a long time and this is displayed on monitor:   Connecting to security.ubuntu.com  (2001:67c:1562::15)]       any help greatly appreciated? thanks00:32
sarnoldzartoosh: do you have a partially-functioning ipv6 stack?00:33
zartooshsarnold, I am not sure if I have or not, is this part of my network configuration that causes this issue?00:34
sarnoldzartoosh: what kind of response times do you get from ping6 security.ubuntu.com?00:36
zartooshsarnold,  64 bytes from likho.canonical.com: icmp_seq=1 ttl=39 time=89.0 ms   this is what I get00:37
sarnoldzartoosh: 89 ms is pretty snappy..00:38
sarnoldzartoosh: the canonical servers aren't exactly -fast-, but if your pings get there in a reasonable time, then my idea's done :)00:38
zartooshsarnold, then you are suggesting perhaps something is wrong with my network configuration? or network environment? thanks00:39
sarnoldzartoosh: yeah, I thought perhaps your DNS servers were returning AAAA records when your network wouldn't actually route those packets00:41
zartooshsarnold, thank you so much.00:42

TazmainHi all, can someone maybe tell me why adding entries to rc.local does not end up getting started at all expect for the curlfs bash script that I added. None of the other services I wanted to have started at boot started at all .09:14
andolTazmain: Any chance that you could share your /etc/rc.local, using a suitable pastein?09:29
Tazmainandol, sure thing09:54

TazmainThe last script it the only one that seems to get executed. The other scripts all work. That it how I start those 3 services mostly.09:56

blaaaWhat is the procedure to update a package in universe (e.g. related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/drupal7/+bug/1262813 )?12:17
uvirtbot`Launchpad bug 1262813 in drupal7 "multiple security issues in drupal7 package" [Undecided,Confirmed]12:17
ikoniablaaa: what do you mean update it ? get a new package built you mean ?12:18
blaaaikonia: yes12:18
ikoniablaaa: log a bug / feature reqeust for it12:18
ikoniablaaa: it's unlikley to happen, and more likley to get the fix back ported12:18
blaaaikonia: ok, so what does that mean, will an updated package appear in the backports repository or will someone backport the security fixes in version 2.27-31 (an further) and apply them to the 7.26 package?12:20
ikoniablaaa: I mean the fix is more likley to get applied to the existing package, rather than a new package upgrade12:21
blaaaikonia: in that case I suppoose it's rather unlikely fixes will be applied at all in a timely fashion12:21
ikoniaI agree12:22
blaaaI believe it's unwise to leave remotely accessible packages without security fixes for a long time, I think it would make sense not to include these packages in any repository. If users choose to install them manually they will at least know they will have to watch for issues and fix them if needed12:24
ikoniaok12:24
blaaaikonia: what is the right forum for a suggestion like that?12:27
ikonialog it in the bug12:27

lynxmanhi guys, what would be the best guide to make a deb to build and package a jar built with maven?13:45
cfhowlett!packaging | lynxman13:46
ubottulynxman: The packaging guide is at http://developer.ubuntu.com/packaging/html/  - See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuDevelopment/NewPackages for information on getting a package integrated into Ubuntu - Other developer resources are at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuDevelopment - See also !backports and !sponsoring13:46
lynxmancfhowlett: I already know the packaging guide and use it, I just wanted to find a clear example with maven dependencies13:46
cfhowlettlynxman, ah.  sorry.  clearly I'm not the one to ask.13:47

zartooshHI I have installed stock python-twisted using apt-get install python-twisted.    I found out there is a newer deb version on their development site. If install the newer version: dpkg -i  <newer version>  would it remove the older one automatically or I have to manually remove the older version? thanks17:17
patdk-wkthat depends on how *they* created the deb package17:29

csmitHey guys. I am using Ubuntu Server 14.04.1. This is a fresh install. I am attempting to set a static IP on eth0, ifconfig only detects lo and does not show eth0 even though I have the static entries for eth0 entered in.18:18
hallynsarnold: ok, i'm dedicating my laptop to this m-f qemu qcow2 bug.  i'm upgrading a vm with a qcow2 with backing file from precise to trusty...  what can i do to increase the odds of it happening d you think?  more or less memory for hte vm?  does >1 vms at a time help?19:46
hallynman but that ws a fast upgrade19:52
zartooshHI how could I control which ports dhclient should use? thanks19:56
RoyKzartoosh: dhclient only uses 68/udp AFAIK20:17
sarnoldhallyn: it triggered for me quite often with a cycle of {apt-get -u dist-upgrade, run some tests, forcibly power off and revert to snapshot}20:21
adam_gsmoser, hey. off-topic, but do you have access to logs for download.cirros-cloud.net?20:55
hallynsarnold: what is "forcibly power off" ?21:50
sarnoldhallyn: in marc's uvt, that's uvt stop -rf21:50
sarnoldhallyn: looks like that turns into virsh snapshot-revert21:51
hallynhm.  lemme try one more time another way then i guess i'l linstall uvt.  i'm getting desparate21:56
hallynand NOW ctrl-alt-t won't launch a terminal21:58
sarnoldhallyn: yeah it feels like hte sort of problem that ought to be reproducable even without uvt21:59
hallynsarnold: i've never had a update/release-upgrade trigger this.  always many cycles of compile/test.  but that's not reliable.  only annoying21:59
sarnoldhallyn: the only surefire way to make it happen is to have pressing need for your VMs to work correctly22:00
hallynyup22:00
hallynand how is it that upstream hasn't seen this22:00
sarnoldmy only theory is that we may rely upon revert far more than the average bear22:01
zartooshHi I am using ubuntu 14.04 I keep getting this error and not sure how I can resolve it, please help:  http://paste.ubuntu.com/8172857/   thanks22:01
sarnoldzartoosh: maybe you've got a bad mirror. try adding more apt sources for more mirrors22:03
hallynsarnold: but i'm not using revert at all22:04
zartooshsarnold, sorry not sure what you mean: here is the complete log : http://paste.ubuntu.com/8172873/22:04
sarnoldhallyn: no?22:07
sarnoldzartoosh: add some lines to your apt sources, something like /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ugh.list:  deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu trusty-security main restricted universe multiverse   and  deb http://mirror.anl.gov/ubuntu// trusty-updates main restricted universe multiverse   and deb http://mirror.anl.gov/ubuntu// trusty main restricted universe multiverse22:10
sarnoldzartoosh: mirror.anl.gov is usually pretty good for me and when they have packages they are ten times faster than the archive.ubuntu.com archives..22:11

zartooshsarnold, I will do that but I like to know the root cause of this issue. I started with kickstart which was build for ubuntu 14.04. Is it possible when I do apt-get update causes some conflicts due to 14.04 update one has been release?  Thanks22:13
hallynsarnold: nope, just using rbasak's uvt-kvm which uses qcow2 with backing file22:13
zartooshsarnold, by the way that solved my problem thanks.22:14
sarnoldhallyn: and rbasak's stuff doesn't d=o revert? or you just don't use it?22:53
sarnoldzartoosh: your mirror didn't finish a full sync or something similar22:53
hallyni don't think it does it.  if it does, i dont 'use it or don't know that i am22:53
hallynbut a bunc hof extra work isn't working so lemme try reverts i guess22:53
hallynsarnold: and upgrading a single vm at a time can do this for you, or you need N in parallel?22:59
sarnoldhallyn: sorry, I can't recall there. I think one-at-a-time is sufficient but I can't promise that.23:07
hallynsarnold: ok, trying with jdstrand's published image.  never worked for me o nthe vostro, let's see if it works on the thinkpad23:08
sarnoldhallyn: happy smashing :)23:08
