hemangpatelHi. morning.04:15
ObrienDaveForeverApprentic, what evil_dan2wik said, do NOT interrupt it04:15
hemangpatelToday i'm going to install ubuntu 14.04 LTS in my laptop, http://www.ubuntu.com/certification/hardware/201204-10922/04:16
hemangpatelis it preferred ?04:16
hemangpatelremoving all windows stuff , only ubuntu04:17
wafflejock_hemangpatel: yeah you should go with 14.04 for longer support, it should be good for 5 years out04:17
wafflejock_hemangpatel: if you have any data on the drive you might want to preserve/retrieve you may want to grab clonezilla first to backup to an external or network attached drive04:17
cynicallemonhemangpatel: yes removing windows is much preffered :)04:17
evil_dan2wikhemangpatel, try live boot, if that doesn't work, don't use it or ask here04:17
hemangpatelI backup all my data already. Will install through USB ( LiLi ).04:18

wafflejock_not sure I understand the question04:21
hemangpatelwafflejock_, I have mSata 32 Gb + 320 GB hdd. Can i install ubuntu in mSaTa drive to fast bootup. btw, msata used by intel SRT .04:22
evil_dan2wikdrewjo, where do you live?04:23
wafflejock_yeah you probably want the /home mounted on the 320 GB drive and the swap there too04:23
evil_dan2wikYou use exetel, I just want to know where.04:23
drewjoSydney04:23

drewjowhat's that got to do with anything?04:24
evil_dan2wikwork well down there?04:24
wafflejock_hemangpatel: my current Ubuntu Gnome 14.04 with quite a bit of stuff installed (GIMP, Chrome, Shutter, Lynis, LAMP stack, Thunderbird) takes up 35GB04:24

hemangpatelwrite in pastie.04:28
evil_dan2wikso it costs $0.5 per meg over04:28
evil_dan2wikbut, 10GB for $35 2-3G04:28
shubhohemang: i am not sure about the ubuntu 14.04 installation scheme. But the philosophy is that /boot and programs should be installed on your mSATA for faster performance so except /var /home and /swap everything should be on your mSATA04:31
wafflejock_^04:31
wafflejock_agree completely on all that04:31
lalalalalalalaniubuntua04:31
shubhohemangpatel: /var /home and /swap should be on your 320GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm disk04:31
roger_salut04:32
hemangpatelok04:32
wafflejock_hemangpatel: depends on how much space you think you'll need in terms of the actual partition size for the parts mounted for /var and /home04:32

JohnQIf I have a disk with two partitions, (sdb1 and sdb2), and I use parted to delete sdb1, and then get the kernel to re-read the partition table, will the old sdb2 become sdb1?  or will it remain sdb2 and there won't be a sdb1at all?09:27
pennieshm doesnt seem to be anything in there09:27
penniesill watch for if it happens again09:27
penniesi should be looking in syslog, correct?09:27
nydelpennies: did you try "ls /var/log/"09:27

nydelpennies: https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-view-and-configure-linux-logs-on-ubuntu-and-centos09:28
iptableJohnQ, it will most likely become sdb109:28

penniesnydel, just tried ls /var/log/ and got a few things back, not sure what i should be looking for09:28
iptableJohnQ, that IS the authoritative answer09:29
JohnQ"most likely" doesnt sound authoritative.09:29
iptableJohnQ, basically, depends. normally it should remap to sdb1, ocasionally, depending on the situation and partition table and kernel, it might not09:29
iptableJohnQ, depends09:29
iptableJohnQ, that is why we invented UUID and told people to use those instead you know.09:30
gatisHi09:30
=== gatis is now known as Gatis
iptableJohnQ, install and run blkid to see UUIDs09:30
TJ-JohnQ: Partition tables have numbered slots. Those numbers don't change just because you delete the entry in the slot09:30

Gatisim trough CLI now09:30
nydelthe URL i posted to chat a minute ago is a great intro to the linux logging system, pennies .. this is getting in to some fun/hardcore real linux bones & viscera stuff09:30

iptableTJ-, but if I restart, the number slot will change.09:30
iptableTJ-, normally ;)09:30
TJ-iptable: No, it won't, ever09:30
JohnQThat sounded much more authoritative.  :-)09:31
penniesnydel, im reviewing it now09:31
GatisI isntalled cairo-dock but DE didn't start. im trough CLI shell using weechat now :(09:31
iptableTJ-, you are assuming a lot about everything, including the partition tool in question.09:31
iptableJohnQ, and wrong09:31
TJ-iptable: MBR partition table has 4 slots. A PT entry is simply 16 bytes describing a start/size/type of each partition.09:31
GatisMy DE has black screen :/09:31
JohnQIt's a GPT table.09:32
iptableTJ-, yes, and some tools may also move slots around because they think it's right. partition magic used to as well09:32
BlendaGatis: no pb here09:32
JohnQand IM using "parted"09:32
iptableJohnQ, why are you not using UUID btw?09:32
nydelGatis: press ctrl-alt-backspace and try again -- if it doesn't work, log in to Unity09:32
JohnQiptable: I didnt make this disk.  I dont have the option of UUID here.09:32
nydelGatis: from where you can just run "cairo-dock" from the launcher. if you like it you can use it with xfce or something09:33
Gatisnydel: no response from ctrl-alt-backspace09:33
iptableJohnQ, ls /dev/disk/by-uuid doesn't show? oh well...09:33
nydelGatis: Ctrl-Z then "pkill -u (your linux username)"09:33
TJ-iptable: JohnQ :The question was in relation to "parted rm 1"09:33
iptableJohnQ, what's the actual problem btw? i=you haven't told us09:33
JohnQIts more complicated than that.  But UUID is not an option here.09:33
GatisI get warning: GTK warning cannot open display09:33
iptableTJ-, I missed the "parted" bit as well.09:34
TJ-JohnQ: "cat /proc/partitions" won't show an empty slot09:34
JohnQI have a disk with an ntfs partition on sdb2, and I need it to be on sdb1.  Thats it.09:34
nydelGatis: when do you get that warning09:34
iptableJohnQ, move the partition definition to first slot09:34
nydelif you run "pkill -u {username}" it should redirect you to login screen09:35
iptableJohnQ, you should have asked. 1. remove sdb1 partition, 2. move partition definition in slot 2 to slot 1 in MBR to map it to sdb1. note a reboot may be required.09:35
Gatisi tried sudo cairo-dock09:35
TJ-JohnQ: What relies on the partition # ?09:35

nydelare you in unity?09:35
nydelor still text09:35
iptableJohnQ, it's hardcoded to sdb1?09:35
JohnQYep09:36
TJ-JohnQ: Can't you simply do "sudo ln -s /dev/sdb2 /dev/sdb1" id sdb1 is no longer available?09:36
iptabledon't use it?09:36
JohnQTJ-: hah that might work too.. :-)09:36
TJ-JohnQ: s/id/if/09:36
JohnQthough, /dev is a udev fs, I dont think I can muck with those.09:37
TJ-JohnQ: Failing that you can just create the device node with the same major/minor numbers at /dev/sdb1 as is at /dev/sdb209:37
TJ-JohnQ: I do all the time :)09:37
iptableTJ-, JohnQ just tested. yes, TJ- method does work. symbolic link in /dev references correctly09:37
JohnQI'll give that a whack.09:37
TJ-JohnQ: "mknod" is probably a 100% bullet-proof method - sym-links can sometimes not be resolved09:37
JohnQYeah, thats my plan.09:38

lego_MonkeyDust: is that the same as my account passwd?12:38
icerootlego_: the encrpytion key is not a password but normally the key is just protected with your user-password. depends which solution you are using exactly. Your password would just unlook the key but the key itself is not your password12:39
cfhowlettlego_, your encryption passphrase should not be the same as your login password.12:39

iptablelego_, have you got the key?12:40
lego_iptable: thx but where on my system do i look for the key?12:40
icerootlego_: the key is normally encrypted with your user-password (if you are using the ubuntu home encryption and not a full disc encryption)12:41

iptablelego_, I believe in /home/user/Private you have the encrypted contents, whereas in /home/user/.ecryptfs (or similar, ls -la /home/user) you will find the key12:42
