Kiloshmm... charl  15:49
V4N13Hey hey15:50
Kiloswelcome to ubuntu-za V4N13  15:51
Kiloswe help peeps with linux issues15:52
Kilosmainly ubuntu15:52
V4N13Yes, Im an Ubuntu user through and through. Wondering if anybody has upgraded to 14.04 (or new install, either one), but now cant VNC (using vnc4server or other) to the standard Gnome or Unity Desktop environments?15:55
V4N13Ive tried all kinds of how to's, but I can only get it working with the xubuntu blue theme background, cant get to my standard Desktop as it looks when you have a screen connected. It worked on all my other Ubuntu installs, just not Trusty15:56
Kiloshang around and lets see if anyone has experienced similar probs15:57
V4N13Should be so simple, if I dont use the blue xubuntu core desktop I just get the Grey screen (or what ever colour you set in your xstartup conf file)15:58
V4N13:)15:58
Kiloshave you done update upgrade15:59
KilosV4N13  http://www.reddit.com/r/Ubuntu/comments/23fwwi/screen_sharing_and_vnc_not_working_on_1404/16:00
Kiloshave you googled the prob?16:01
V4N13yes, all of it. actually did the upgrade from 12.04 LTS to 14.04 (I usually do fresh installs, but hey, I thought Id give it a try). Even on a fresh install, all updates done, I just cant seem to attach to standard Unity desktop. Ill keep Googling, Im sure Ill come right, but it seems to be a well known prob on other forums16:01
Kilosoh wait a bit16:01
V4N13I presume vncserver connects to Gnome, and possibly somewhere in a config I need to specify Unity?16:02
Kilosjust run sudo aptitude upgrade16:02
Kilosbut i remember something with screen not showing16:02
Kiloshad to do with resolution settings16:03
V4N13This is what I did and got it right, but again, with the wrong desktop environment, I want the normal one! LOL  "http://www.howtoforge.com/how-to-install-vnc-server-on-ubuntu-14.04"16:03
V4N13Possibly still a bug? https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/vnc4/+bug/132628616:04
V4N13(sorry, I know im not supposed to paste links in IRC chats)16:05
Kilosthats fine we do that here16:05
V4N13Its just to assist if anyone can check them out and see where they / I am going wrong16:05
Kilosim not very clued up with things and normally need help with about everything so lets see what the clever guys come up with16:06
Kilosthey all on the way home now so you need patience16:06
V4N13ok thanks! It may be a little bug that should get resolved soon.... I hope16:07
V4N13Yip, understand... hey its Friday, IT guys leave work at 3pm ;)16:07
Kilos14.04 should have its bugs sorted by now16:07
V4N13Well at least in Cape Town we do... lol16:07
Kiloshaha then you have to wait for them to quench their thirsts first16:08
Kiloswe have lots og guys in ct and more moving there this coming month16:08
Kiloss/og/of16:08
KilosV4N13  do you use aptitude16:10
V4N13True.. Let me grab a beer too..16:10
Kiloshehe16:10
V4N13I still use apt-get16:11
Kiloslets try something16:11
V4N13dist-upgrade and standard upgrade etc16:11
Kilossudo apt-get install aptitude16:11
V4N13would there be a difference using aptitude?16:11
V4N13will give it a bash16:11
Kilosaptitude is more user friendly imo16:11
Kilosand gives options that apt-get doesnt16:12
V4N13ok.. installing16:12
Kilosshould be quick16:12
V4N13doing aptitude upgrade and see some additional linux-headers being installed...16:14
V4N13will see if I can reinstall vncserver with aptitude16:14
Kilosyip aptitude does more than apt-get16:14
Kilosthe command is different16:14
V4N13cool thanks..16:14
Kilosaptitude reinstall "package"16:15
V4N13yeah ive used it before, but up until 13.04 was advised to keep using apt-get16:15
Kilosaha16:15
Kiloscool16:15
V4N13will figure it out and will let you know16:15
Kilosok16:15
V4N13(if I get vnc working the Desktop i want)16:15
V4N13IVe tried so many things I may have totally wrecked my Ubuntu. (even by mistake deleted my Xauthority file, haha, so had to recreate that, but got a strange feeling the Magic-Cookies are stuffed, as it doesnt look like it used to)16:16
V4N13thanks for the advice, will try a fresh install and use aptitude16:17
Kiloseish16:17
Kilossorry i couldnt be more helpful16:17
Kilosbut you welcome here any/all the time16:18
Kilosthe brains live here16:18
V4N13Its a server I use at work just for network sniffing, tcpdumps, and mirroring of my network switches to view traffic, so no biggie16:18

charlhi Kilos, V4N13 16:58
Kiloshi charl  16:58
charl:)16:58
Kiloshave you got advice for V4N13   charl  16:59
charllemme read16:59
charlok it's a vnc problem do i understand correctly ?17:01
charlyeah then you're with the wrong person, i haven't used vnc in probably 10+ years17:01
charlused vnc waaaaay back in years 2001, 2002 i think17:01
charlbefore windows desktops came with rdp server by default17:01
charlbut the vnc protocol is absolutely horrible17:01
charlextremely inefficient17:01
charli think very few people actually still use it17:02
charlbrb17:03
charlok back17:18
charlV4N13: ^^17:18
charlhave you tried xrdp or nodesktop ?17:19
charlnomachine i mean lol https://www.nomachine.com/17:19
V4N13I havent, but will try. I still user VNC all the time (well used to) to all my Ubuntu machines17:28
V4N13works well if configured correctly, just now with 14.04 seems to be poked. so I can RDP (or connect at least) to my current Desktop as if I were booting up my laptop with ubuntu?17:29
V4N13usually with all my servers I user the cli, but for some I like to use Wireshark, and other GUI based tools, so use Ubuntu Desktop as my server17:30
V4N13and virtualbox for other VMs, so VNC was great. but will try your suggestion17:31
charlhave you ever tried x11 forwarding with openssh17:33
charlthen you don't need to run a full desktop17:33
charlthat's what i do when i for example need to run wireshark17:33
charlafaik there are also options for remote capture17:33
V4N13I have, but just not that ease of access as you have to log into the server anyway17:34
charlrunning a full out desktop is really inefficient on memory for example17:34
charlok17:34
V4N13I understand.. its not a simple little server I use for network monitoring. all other servers use ubuntu server17:34
V4N13I have used X11 forwarding with Putty, but as I use Ubuntu on my laptop too, how would I initiate that session with openssh?17:35
charlyou have to configure it17:35
V4N13if its too much to explain no worries, Ill google it :)17:35
charllet me look it up17:35
charlyeah i'm sure you'll find it17:35
charlin /etc/ssh/ssh_config17:36
charlForwardX11 no17:36
charluncomment and make it yes17:36
V4N13ah! of course17:36
V4N13(thumbs up picture)17:36
charlbut if you want to use wireshark remote capturing via ssh is awesome17:39
charljust google around a bit, it isn't too difficult17:39
charlwireshark is just one of those essential tools17:39
charlhttp://serverfault.com/questions/362529/how-can-i-sniff-the-traffic-of-remote-machine-with-wireshark17:40
charlyou do it using a named pipe essentially, a handy trick17:41
V4N13Awesome, thanks a mil!17:46
charl:)17:46
Kilosthanks charl  18:04
