[10:43] it's the server i'm connected to [10:43] wilhelm.freenode.net [10:43] ah [10:44] kornbluth is actually faster and better but has no ipv6 [11:02] hmm... [11:09] kaput ! [11:09] es ist total kaput [11:25] [13:03] [Notice] -tomaw- [Global Notice] Hi all. As you've probably noticed we're having some connectivity issues across some of our servers today. Sadly this is again due to DDoS attacks. Please join us in a collective sigh. [11:25] SIGH [11:30] really why they keep on with this ddos crap [12:34] script kiddies practicing? [12:34] :P === nuvolari_ is now known as nuvolari [13:31] yeah nuvolari [13:31] so stupid [15:48] hi V4N13 [15:49] hmm... charl [15:50] Hey hey [15:51] welcome to ubuntu-za V4N13 [15:52] we help peeps with linux issues [15:52] mainly ubuntu [15:55] Yes, Im an Ubuntu user through and through. Wondering if anybody has upgraded to 14.04 (or new install, either one), but now cant VNC (using vnc4server or other) to the standard Gnome or Unity Desktop environments? [15:56] Ive tried all kinds of how to's, but I can only get it working with the xubuntu blue theme background, cant get to my standard Desktop as it looks when you have a screen connected. It worked on all my other Ubuntu installs, just not Trusty [15:57] hang around and lets see if anyone has experienced similar probs [15:58] Should be so simple, if I dont use the blue xubuntu core desktop I just get the Grey screen (or what ever colour you set in your xstartup conf file) [15:58] :) [15:59] have you done update upgrade [16:00] V4N13 http://www.reddit.com/r/Ubuntu/comments/23fwwi/screen_sharing_and_vnc_not_working_on_1404/ [16:01] have you googled the prob? [16:01] yes, all of it. actually did the upgrade from 12.04 LTS to 14.04 (I usually do fresh installs, but hey, I thought Id give it a try). Even on a fresh install, all updates done, I just cant seem to attach to standard Unity desktop. Ill keep Googling, Im sure Ill come right, but it seems to be a well known prob on other forums [16:01] oh wait a bit [16:02] I presume vncserver connects to Gnome, and possibly somewhere in a config I need to specify Unity? [16:02] just run sudo aptitude upgrade [16:02] but i remember something with screen not showing [16:03] had to do with resolution settings [16:03] This is what I did and got it right, but again, with the wrong desktop environment, I want the normal one! LOL "http://www.howtoforge.com/how-to-install-vnc-server-on-ubuntu-14.04" [16:04] Possibly still a bug? https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/vnc4/+bug/1326286 [16:05] (sorry, I know im not supposed to paste links in IRC chats) [16:05] thats fine we do that here [16:05] Its just to assist if anyone can check them out and see where they / I am going wrong [16:06] im not very clued up with things and normally need help with about everything so lets see what the clever guys come up with [16:06] they all on the way home now so you need patience [16:07] ok thanks! It may be a little bug that should get resolved soon.... I hope [16:07] Yip, understand... hey its Friday, IT guys leave work at 3pm ;) [16:07] 14.04 should have its bugs sorted by now [16:07] Well at least in Cape Town we do... lol [16:08] haha then you have to wait for them to quench their thirsts first [16:08] we have lots og guys in ct and more moving there this coming month [16:08] s/og/of [16:10] V4N13 do you use aptitude [16:10] True.. Let me grab a beer too.. [16:10] hehe [16:11] I still use apt-get [16:11] lets try something [16:11] dist-upgrade and standard upgrade etc [16:11] sudo apt-get install aptitude [16:11] would there be a difference using aptitude? [16:11] will give it a bash [16:11] aptitude is more user friendly imo [16:12] and gives options that apt-get doesnt [16:12] ok.. installing [16:12] should be quick [16:14] doing aptitude upgrade and see some additional linux-headers being installed... [16:14] will see if I can reinstall vncserver with aptitude [16:14] yip aptitude does more than apt-get [16:14] the command is different [16:14] cool thanks.. [16:15] aptitude reinstall "package" [16:15] yeah ive used it before, but up until 13.04 was advised to keep using apt-get [16:15] aha [16:15] cool [16:15] will figure it out and will let you know [16:15] ok [16:15] (if I get vnc working the Desktop i want) [16:16] IVe tried so many things I may have totally wrecked my Ubuntu. (even by mistake deleted my Xauthority file, haha, so had to recreate that, but got a strange feeling the Magic-Cookies are stuffed, as it doesnt look like it used to) [16:17] thanks for the advice, will try a fresh install and use aptitude [16:17] eish [16:17] sorry i couldnt be more helpful [16:18] but you welcome here any/all the time [16:18] the brains live here [16:18] Its a server I use at work just for network sniffing, tcpdumps, and mirroring of my network switches to view traffic, so no biggie [16:20] Good to know! :) Yip, some clever brains in the open source community in ZA.. We Rock!! [16:20] (except me when it comes to VNC. lol) [16:20] haha we have 2 ubuntu devs here as well [16:20] someone here will sort it for you [16:21] i only know a few basics [16:21] im the greeter bot here [16:22] Ah, always need a friendly bot in an IRC room hey! Wish they were all as helpful as you [16:22] Some are like, welcome, what do you want, now F off! [16:24] lol [16:24] this is the friendliest ubuntu channel of all i think [16:25] used to be quick help but guys have been getting more and more busy the last 2 years or so [16:25] nuvolari ping [16:26] wb [16:26] sorry, tried to exit out of a Crypto IRC chat but closed my entire Xchat [16:26] lol [16:31] hi smile [16:31] hi :D [16:32] :) [16:42] K, bye Smile... lol [16:42] you gave up? [16:42] oh sorry i half read again [16:58] good evenink [16:58] hi Kilos, V4N13 [16:58] hi charl [16:58] :) [16:59] have you got advice for V4N13 charl [16:59] lemme read [17:01] ok it's a vnc problem do i understand correctly ? [17:01] yeah then you're with the wrong person, i haven't used vnc in probably 10+ years [17:01] used vnc waaaaay back in years 2001, 2002 i think [17:01] before windows desktops came with rdp server by default [17:01] but the vnc protocol is absolutely horrible [17:01] extremely inefficient [17:02] i think very few people actually still use it [17:03] brb [17:18] ok back [17:18] V4N13: ^^ [17:19] have you tried xrdp or nodesktop ? [17:19] nomachine i mean lol https://www.nomachine.com/ [17:28] I havent, but will try. I still user VNC all the time (well used to) to all my Ubuntu machines [17:29] works well if configured correctly, just now with 14.04 seems to be poked. so I can RDP (or connect at least) to my current Desktop as if I were booting up my laptop with ubuntu? [17:30] usually with all my servers I user the cli, but for some I like to use Wireshark, and other GUI based tools, so use Ubuntu Desktop as my server [17:31] and virtualbox for other VMs, so VNC was great. but will try your suggestion [17:33] have you ever tried x11 forwarding with openssh [17:33] then you don't need to run a full desktop [17:33] that's what i do when i for example need to run wireshark [17:33] afaik there are also options for remote capture [17:34] I have, but just not that ease of access as you have to log into the server anyway [17:34] running a full out desktop is really inefficient on memory for example [17:34] ok [17:34] I understand.. its not a simple little server I use for network monitoring. all other servers use ubuntu server [17:35] I have used X11 forwarding with Putty, but as I use Ubuntu on my laptop too, how would I initiate that session with openssh? [17:35] you have to configure it [17:35] if its too much to explain no worries, Ill google it :) [17:35] let me look it up [17:35] yeah i'm sure you'll find it [17:36] in /etc/ssh/ssh_config [17:36] ForwardX11 no [17:36] uncomment and make it yes [17:36] ah! of course [17:36] (thumbs up picture) [17:39] but if you want to use wireshark remote capturing via ssh is awesome [17:39] just google around a bit, it isn't too difficult [17:39] wireshark is just one of those essential tools [17:40] http://serverfault.com/questions/362529/how-can-i-sniff-the-traffic-of-remote-machine-with-wireshark [17:41] you do it using a named pipe essentially, a handy trick [17:46] Awesome, thanks a mil! [17:46] :) [18:04] thanks charl
