knobHexagonite, I take it it is a laptop?00:03
Hexagoniteknob: yes00:03
knoball updates ready to go?00:03
mavenHey everybody00:04
Hexagoniteknob: What do you mean?00:04
knobHey maven00:04
knobWell, do you run Software Updater... anything waiting to be updated?00:05
knobOr does it say your computer is up to date?00:05
Hexagoniteknob: Nope, none. All updates installed00:05
mavenI am looking for a software that will allow me to view ip cams on my network00:06
knobHexagonite, I am no expert... trying to help.  Yet I am kind of out of ideas.00:06
knobDid you google just that error?00:07
knobmaven, www.ispyconnect.com/00:07
knobthat is one00:07
knobzoneminder.com is another one00:07
Hexagoniteknob: Yep, I tried doing the acpi_backlight=vendor thing and my FN-keys wouldn't work00:07
sysop2macen what about zone minder?00:07
sysop2maven I mean00:07
knobI think it is a fork of the other00:07
knobhmm... I am lost Hexagonite ... ask again in 10 minutes.. probably somebody more knowledgable than me will offer their insight!00:08
Hexagoniteokay, thanks anyway!00:08
aukunwhen i put in terminal locate -i *.mp4         output   /home/aukun/Descargas/ua2x09.mp4 , but when i go in cd /home/aukun/Descargas/  and then la in this folder the file ua2x09.mp4 don't exist why?00:08
sysop2plus you can point vlc at ip cameras. I do it with mine.00:08
sysop2I have a playlist of my cameras and a simple script to press the next button every so often.00:09
knobaukun, what about   ls -alF00:09
mavenOk. I've heard of Zoneminder, but I was wondering if there  were any other solutions for Ubuntu.00:10
sysop2VLC if you dont mind doing a little work.00:11
aukunno don't view ua2x09.mp400:11
eeeeaukun: try sudo updatedb , then locate00:12
aukunknob i put ls -alF and don't find ua2x09.mp400:12
eeeei think it might have been removed and the db wasn't updated00:12
knobtype   find / -name 'uz2x09.mp4'00:12
aukunwith find work it but with locate no00:13
eeeeaukun: when you want to use locate, do sudo updatedb first, i think that was the problem00:13
aukunok eeee now workit00:13
aukunwhy need updatedb with locate?00:14
eeeeaukun: locate uses a saved database of the files, that's why it's faster than find00:14
eeeeso you need to update the list before using it00:15
aukunok thanks for explain the explanation00:15

thumbeehi! can anyone identify the flaw of my troubleshooting procedure. i was trying to solve why mkswap /dev/sda2 was returning 'not enough space' (i was extending a wifi router with usb storage).  the problem/solution was i was creating the swap partition "type" in fdisk as "extended" and not "primary".01:02
kevivBashing-om: yea I had no idea it had a different kernel; I just thought it had the most popular packages pre-installed01:02
thumbeesolution was absolutely silly. press "p" for primary as oppose to "e" for extended. solved. the word "extended" made sense to me though.. cause like 'extended partition' and not the primary.. (lacking understanding of what swap means yes..) but i really SHOULD have been able to correct my own error earlier than like 4hr01:02

thumbeerww: if swap partitions dont contain a fs. when WHY when creating the swap PARITION. do i have to select "primary partition" or "extended". note you have to select "primary partition" (this shit stumped me all day and ruined my day)02:15
Beldarmaherrera89, You may need to open it, look in software & updates-other software and make sure the partners and independent are ticked.02:16
sydneygood :) much better :)02:16
rwwthumbee: "partition" and "filesystem" aren't synonyms, so I don't understand the logic behind your question02:16
rwwand you can set a swap partition as extended just fine...02:16
thumbeeim fairly certain u cant.. i was stuck on this problem all day where i ran mkswap /dev/sda2 and it produces an error 'not enough space'02:17
rwwall extended partitions have partition numbers greater than or equal to 5, for a start02:17
thumbeetook me a world of hurt to realize my mistake was when i created the swap partition, it was supose to be type='primary partition' and not "extended"02:18
rwwso yes, if you created an extended partition and then tried to reference it as sda2 that wouldn't work02:18
thumbeei wish the error message would indicate that. as oppose to "not enough space"02:18
rwwwell, command-line tools tend to have interesting logic. it's one reason people in here tend to stick to the shiny GUI stuff02:19
thumbeeso what your saying is if my sda # was say /dev/sda6 it would have mkswap'ed fine. HMM02:20
thumbeenow that would have been another world of hurt because it would have let me through then i wouldnt realize my swap partition was done incorrectl02:20
thumbee*incorrectly02:20
rwwi'm saying that the extended partition you created would probably have been named /dev/sda5, so mkswap /dev/sda5 would have worked02:20
thumbeeoh. nope. because the first step in fsck is to selet the number. i selected the next number up.. ie. used only sda1.02:21
rwwdo you mean fdisk?02:21
thumbee*yes sorry. fdisk02:22
rwwoh, I'm being an idiot. fdisk uses the terminology extended to refer to an msdos partition that contains one or more logical partitions...02:22
* rww pulls up fdisk and checks some assumptions02:23
thumbeeHA... not funny. fdisk is not funny02:23
rwwah, yeah, the manpage says as much...02:23
GacntSo with Virt-Manager I'm getting an IP something like 192.168.1.122, but my actual lan IP range is 10.0.0.* so how can I assign an actual ip address instead of some bridged one02:24
maherrera89Beldar, I have checked the repos and it was missing, I added and currently installing will see if it works good with the camera and mic02:24

kostkonmaherrera89, k02:26

nikitamogstill a little confused on how simlinking works02:27
thumbeeyes - i read (and was not successful) mkswap. i did NOT understand it as the equivalent of 'formatting'. but interpretted as a 'initialization' after formatting02:27
rwwerm, that doesn't answer my question02:27
nikitamogso the file replaced is a reference to the folder i'm simlinking...02:27
thumbeerww: im running it on a 4M wifi router (tp-link mr3020). usb key attaches to the $30 router to give it more space02:28
nikitamogso how would I tell my os to refer to a folder in a different harddrive02:28
thumbeerww: it uses busybox (which i think is some linux variant?).02:28
rwwthumbee: busybox is a coreutils variant that implements the basic command-line tools you would use on a Linux system02:29
rwwanyways, that doesn't sound at all like Ubuntu, so try ##linux.02:29
vicsar.02:30
OerHeksnikitamog, looks easy to do http://www.windows-to-linux.com/2013/09/run-playonlinux-games-outside-home-directory/02:30
thumbeeits really not even linux. its my core logic is fucked up02:30
thumbeemy abilitiy to problem solve and troubleshoot the problem was the level of a 1st grade peanut02:31
rwwpoint being, it doesn't belong here (and neither does cursing, fwiw)02:31
nikitamogOerHeks: thanks for the link i'll read up02:31
akurilinquestion: say I have a logrotate for nginx that's set to 52 weekly by default. I really don't need it for that long. If I set it to say 4 weeks, will logrotate nuke the older .gz files or will it leave htem alone?02:32
thumbeeit doesnt belong anywhere. (both the core question. and the language)02:32
thumbeerww: but yes. thank you. mkswap = format for swap. mkfs = format for file system.  file system != swap. if i understood what you explained to me above.02:38
thumbeeerr. partition != file system.02:39
OrganicanarchyHello, I'm trying to dual boot with windows 8 (no EUFI) I just upgarded from 7. WHen I run the installer, it sees my hard drives as free space (they most certainly are NOT free space) any ideas on how I can get it to see my data so I can parition correctly?02:43

no_gravityiptable: let me change to the old battery...12:36
iptableno_gravity, it looks like either 1. ubuntu is not aware that this is a laptop, or 2. the battery you are using is really bad because you wanted to save a few pennies and now will have to pay double. cheap batteries often have this thing about not reporting that they exist to the system.12:36
iptableno_gravity, hence they are cheap batteries. they are often missing a whole control board in them which would talk to the laptop.12:37

damian-it only started after i did a release upgrade (which actually screwed the grub); every install i've done since has had the bug12:43
damian-but ahh well, who cares!12:43
iptablepngl, is the service there in /etc/init/ as well, or just in /etc/init.d/12:43
damian-so on a similar note (to your nickname moreso than anything else), wanna teach me some basic iptables? :P12:43
damian-(and note i'm pretty drunk, so it might be futile)12:43
pngliptable: There is service-name.conf in /etc/init12:43
iptabledamian-, I can, no problem, although it's best suited for a PM rather than this channel and most likely not for today. I am here Monday-Friday 9am-6pm UK time.12:44
mmizgierpngl: is it also in init.d?12:44
iptablepngl, ok, so it looks like the new init method of server-name in /etc/init is broken and the init.d (old sysV init) works12:44
MotherMGAHello, I have bluetooth headphones that "just worked" in 13.10, but since the update to 14.04, they don't.  I've worked around two separate problems: 1) run `pacmd load-module module-bluetooth-discover > /dev/null` from the commandline to allow my headphones to connect and then I have to 2) run blueman-manager, rightlick on the headphones and set the audio profile to a2dp. Does anyone know how I can fix it, so the module is always 12:44
damian-oh, but i forget that i'm on freenode mode of the time, hahahaha12:44
damian-what time is it in UK atm?12:44
pngliptable, mmizgier Sorry, I forgot to say that the error message is "Job failed to start" on "sudo service service-name start"12:44
pnglmmizgier: yes it is also in init.d12:45
iptablepngl, so you'd need to debug the /etc/init version, OR remove it form /etc/init (make a copy first) and use update-rc.d then and see if it picks up the old version automatically instead.12:45
iptablepngl, it looks like the new init method of server-name in /etc/init is broken and the init.d (old sysV init) works12:45
iptabledamian-, in google type in "time in UK"12:46
damian-1:45pm .. 9hrs behind me. ok, so if i math that up, it means that i'm usually around here (at least) 9:00am-1:00pm your time12:46
damian-that will work out well12:46
iptabledamian-, cool. just ping me next week and I can give you a crash course12:46
damian-thanks dude, i really need to secure one of my internet facing machines, hahaha12:46
damian-what do you do for wrok12:47

iptableMotherMGA, in /etc/pulse there is system.pa which contains the load-module definitions. you can add it there on the bottom of the definitions12:47
iptabledamian-, I secure linux installs and network (firewalls, DPI etc)12:48
iptabledamian-, hence the nickname12:48
pngliptable: thanks a lot, it works now12:49
iptablepngl, no probs12:49
damian-that's a pretty cool job, do you like it (or love it)12:49
iptabledamian-, I did for the first few years. now I am just a bored grumpy architect :P12:50
* iptable goes for a break. need to return some stuff to amazon12:50
MotherMGAiptable: yeah, I found that file and it has a `.ifexists module-bluetooth-discover` and loads it.  I tried always loading it. it appears that the condition is passing, the module is loading, but for whatever reason, its "not loaded" by the time I get to the desktop.12:50
iptableMotherMGA, put it at the very bottom maybe. could be module load order12:51
benzhninjais the featured option worth it on gumtree12:51
iptableMotherMGA, alternatively, apt-get install --reinstall *might* help.12:51
iptablebenzhninja, yes, ok, why not. now stop spamming12:51
MotherMGAiptable: ok. I'll try it.  any suggestion on defaulting the audio profile to a2dp?12:51
damian-welllllll just don't do a Life as a House gig on them (getting fired, destroying all of your work, storming out, getting cancer etc.)12:52
MotherMGAcurrently, it connects with no audio profile12:52
iptableMotherMGA, no, I wouldn't know. A workaround if required (also for bluetooth) could be to create a script wiuth the 2 commands and put it to start on login in the GUI.12:52
damian-wait, do you just get paid for irc'ng all day and sometimes securing linux systems? :P12:53
MotherMGAiptable: thanks.12:53
iptabledamian-, no, I'm stable. Got 2 kids to keep me entertained.12:53
iptableMotherMGA, no probs.12:53
iptableMotherMGA, also might be worth starting from 14.04.1 liveCD and checking if the problem exists there. if so, then 14.04 doesn't like your sound card and you need a workaround, if not, then it's a fixable issue on the current install.12:54

lvhHello. I am using Travis CI, which uses Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I'm using some software that uses libsodium, which is not avaiable in the default package archives. There's a ppa, ppa:shnatsel/dnscrypt, which I tried to use. t3floneeee: paranoia I guess, just want to check and see what's going on15:55
eeeet3flon: you could load a vm and do a find / * -exec md5sum {} >> files \;15:55
loaTJ-, i thought there is something official15:55
eeeethen do the same on your system15:56
TJ-JuJuBee: despite the scary name, no. It sends the named signal to the process. "USR1" for dd is a "how far have you got?" signal15:56
JuJuBeeTJ-: and should sr1 be root?15:56
t3floneeee: so load a vm of a clean install and execute the above?15:56
eeeet3flon: you'd have to update it first i guess15:57
JuJuBeeTJ-: finished already so no need.  They match15:57
TJ-JuJuBee: "sudo pkill -USR1 dd" will be correct. ("-USR1" is the signal name to send to the process)15:57
TJ-JuJuBee: Well, at least you've learned about dd and signals :)15:57
eeeeit would give you a list of all files and their md5sums15:57
JuJuBeeYes, thanks TJ-15:57

loaJuJuBee, how about this? sudo ddrescue /dev/sdb /tmp/check_this && md5sum /tmp/check_this15:58

loayes i understand16:00
loaTJ-, no its want out location too16:01
loai tried...16:01
eeeet3flon: if you want to make it way easier (you'd have to get funky with comm and diff and sed to spot any malware) , to make it easier you could just get a list of all installed packages in your system, and have it installed on the vm, and then get the list16:01
eeeet3flon: in the find on your installation you'd have to exclude your home directory16:01

t3floneeee: update the virtual machine?16:02
eeeet3flon: should i go on ? or ... ?16:02
eeeet3flon: dpkg --get-selections > installedpackages   (do that on your installation)16:02
eeeet3flon: that gives you a list of all installed packages16:03
t3floneeee: I was also thinking of using ls -lR and comparing size of all executables..16:03
eeeewell you could easily spot any added execs16:03
eeeeif you do a diff on the files16:03
eeeeah, you mean the execs of already installed packages, yeah you'd have the md5sum of yours and the vm ones16:05

ZelouilleHello. I'm on Ubuntu 12.04 64bits. Since the last HWE (Enablement Stack) update, my virtualbox is broken. The virtualbox kernel module failed to build : https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/virtualbox/+bug/1292118 . Related to the comments, two possible solutions are : 1-Using a PPA. or 2- Download and install virtualbox directly from Oracle website. But do you think it will be fixed directly in the Ubuntu repositories ?17:03
