SporkWitchafter a fresh install of 14.04, i'm intermittently receiving a notice that an application (which it doesn't name) is repeatedly trying to access the wallet and that it might be malicious in nature.  the first of these was within a few minutes of the first boot.  what is a likely culprit for this, also, where can i find logs indicating access attempts? (also worth noting that i've yet to receive a05:22
SporkWitchsingle request for me to enter the master password; maybe something related to entering account info in kontact before i was prompted to set up the wallet?)05:23

ShalokShalom_hi there :)12:10
ShalokShalom_how is the kubuntu logo called, on boot and shutdown ?12:11

ShalokShalom_thanks12:11
allonHi12:37
allonI have two kubuntus on my pc a 10.04 and a 12.0412:37
allonI would like to replace the 10.04 by a 14.0412:38
allonI am in the installation program12:39
allonI can see my two ubuntu in the graphic bar12:40
allonI can see that my ubuntu 10.04 is on sda1 and my 12.04 on sda612:41
BluesKajallon, why not upgrade the 12.04 to 14.04 , much easier over the internet rather than having to do a clean install12:42
allonbut from this point I can not click in the click box close to sda112:43
BluesKajthen upgrade the 10.04 to 13.04 if you must12:44
BluesKajerr 10.04 to 12.0412:44
allonbecause all my zork is on the 12.04 and I don t want to loose it12:44
BluesKajzork12:44
BluesKaj?12:44
allonwork12:45
allonfrench keyboard12:45
alloninternet upgrade is safe?12:46
allonI did it a couple of years ago and it killed everything12:46
allonI thouht a clean install would be easier12:47
BluesKajallon, do you have / and /home partitions?12:49
allonFrom Kubuntu installer I can only see /dev/sda /dev/sda1 etc12:52
BluesKajallon, use manual partitioning12:53
allonI am in the manual partitionning par12:53
allonI am in the manual partitionning part12:53
allonI have copyed all my data to an external drive12:53
allonso I am ready to delete everything from the 10.0412:54
BluesKajok what's on sda?12:54
allonnothing on sda 10.04 on sda1 12.04 on sda6 swap on sda512:55
BluesKajso you have no /home partitions ...recommend you create separate / and /home12:59
allonok12:59
allonbut I also have no place anymore on my disk12:59
allonshould I delete sda1?13:00
BluesKajif you don't need 10.04 then yes13:00
allonI don t need it13:01
allonok I delete it fro; the partition screen13:02
allonOk now I have 186Megs free13:03
allonCreate a nez partitionM13:03
allon?13:03
BluesKajnow create a new / partition there , make it about 15G13:03
allonCreate a new partition?13:03
allonUse as ?13:04
allonext4?13:04
BluesKajext4 yes13:04
allonmount point / or /home ?13:05
BluesKajallon / first then resize to 15G , use /home with the remainder13:07
BluesKaj / will probly be sda1 , then /home will be sda213:09
mcstr_anyone knows where can i find the website template for ubuntu/kubuntu?13:10
mcstr_or any other good template where you can see on the first look that its linux/software//distro related13:10
=== byte^bnc is now known as byte
allonso now I have /dev/sda1 ext4 /home 14998MB13:12
BluesKajmcstr_, http://www.kubuntu.org/ dunno if the template is available tho13:13
BluesKajallon the / shoud be 14998MB, /home should be much larger13:14
allonok I see I change it13:15
allonso I assign the rest of the free space to my /home?13:15
allonits about 170 megs13:16
BluesKaj170 mb is too small for anything 170G perhaps ?13:18
mcstr_BluesKaj i can't see any link to a template there but afair there was once somewhere the ubuntu/kubuntu templates for download13:18
allon170G sorry13:18
allonWill Kubuntu be written to /13:19
BluesKajok allon then that's fine , did you create the /home mountpoint ?13:19
BluesKajyes kubuntu will be written to /13:20
allonYes I just did13:20

allonok I have my button Install now13:21
allonbut where do I tell him to install to sda1?13:22
BluesKajallon, ok13:22
BluesKajyou already did13:22
BluesKajby  creating the / and /home mountpoints13:23
allonoh great13:23
BluesKajkubuntu will now install to /13:23
allonstarted !!!!!!13:24
allongreat help13:25
allonI cqn continue to develop a bit of gcompris13:25
allonI could not since a few weeks use muon, it would not find packages13:26
allonI tryed to change repositories to old_archive or something like this, worked for some packages but not for phpmyadmin for exemple13:27
allonso I decided to jump to a new version13:27
BluesKajallon, from now on if you wish to upgrade to the next OS release you just install it to / and /home will still have your config files and settings for the default apps13:28
BluesKajand it's much faster if you need to reinstall for some reason13:29
allonthis is great yes13:29
allonand by magic my keyboard went to french layout !!!13:29
allonmuch easier13:29
allondo you know if grub will update itself?13:31
BluesKajyes it wiil, right at the finish of the install13:33
allonI am back but no 14.04 in my grub!13:52
allononly the old 10.04 and 12.04 is working perfectly13:52
lordievaderGood afternoon.13:53
BluesKajallon, odd , did you update grub?13:54
allonno but I think I made a mistake13:54
allonbefore I started to put the / and the /home13:55
allonI set boot to /sda6 because there was no sda1 anymore13:56
BluesKajlook at your partitioner , you should see a / and a /home partition if you installed 14.04 correctly13:56
BluesKajyou edited a boot flag?13:57
allonjust midified the choice in the drop box in kubuntu manual installer13:58
BluesKajdid you set the mountpoints in sda  by using the change button in the partitioner ?13:59
allonyes13:59
allonand I set it to sda6 which is the 12.0413:59
allonthat was maybe my mistake13:59
allonI am in gparted and I can see the partition which correspond to / and /home14:00
allonno problem there14:00

shattingduckhello!14:12
BluesKajglad to help allon14:12
allonNow a bit of data reinstallation14:13
shattingduckI h ave following problem: when I have 2 external harddisks connected to a pc running kubuntu 14.4 and try to copy 680 GB using the dolphin (copy and paste from one window to the other) after some minutes the source drive is unmounted and the files cannot be copied anymore. when I then abort the copying operation I can remount the drive..  same things happens when I use cp -r14:14
shattingduckso i am trying to copy from one external hdd to the other14:14
shattingduckwhat could be the problem14:14
shattingduckanyone here?14:16
BluesKajshattingduck, and your permissions are properly set to full control for your user on both drives in share?14:18
shattingduckyes14:18
shattingduckthe copying starts without problems... but doesn't last for long14:18
BluesKajalso make sure you have samba installed even if you use the network folder option14:19
shattingduckthey are both connected through usb.. why would I need samba?14:19
BluesKajexactly the question I asked, but after installing samba i had no more issues14:20
BluesKajeven tho i don't use the samba gui14:21
shattingduckyou had the same problem?14:22
BluesKajyup14:22
shattingduckhmmm....14:22
shattingduckthese linux distros still have their quirks... what I like about kubuntu though is that it doesn't come to a stall during big file copying operations.. I have linux mint installed and the entire system is slowed because of it... it has to do with the prirority dolphin gets in linux mint. but how do I change it?14:23
BluesKajthink it's an smb config problem that samba seems to fix , that's all I can come up with14:23
shattingduckwell there are soms samba-VFS modules being loaded.. maybe that does something14:24
BluesKajdid you check /var/log/syslog for time out errors ?14:25
shattingduckno14:26
shattingduckyou mean on the linux mint ?14:26
BluesKajnot that a time out error will you much14:26
BluesKajtell14:26
BluesKajon whatever OS you use to transfer the files14:27
shattingduckwell .... I will look into it14:28
shattingduckI still have this problem where the system tray does not show if the disk is mounted or not.. it always shows it the same, whether it's mounted or not14:47
Ab3Lhi. are you having muon crashes while installing/uninstalling applications?14:50
shattingduckno14:53
shattingducktry synaptics instead...14:54
Ab3Lthere's a segmentation fault14:55
Ab3Lit seems to be a known bug, but it affects me only from today.14:56
shattingduckrestarting?14:56
Ab3Ldo you mean resatart the system?14:59
shattingduckyes14:59
Ab3Li'll try. thx15:00

akis<akis> hi all. i am trying to start kwallet but i am getting the following error http://paste.ubuntu.com/8197906/ . Any idea to make this application to be strated and loaded on xubuntu 12.04? I googled this issue already but i didnt find any appropriate answer.15:41
SporkWitchso when i boot the kubuntu 14.04 livecd i get the shiny Kubuntu name/logo splash while it loads up.  once i install, though, i get this bland text terminal while it's starting.  any idea why that might be?  there doesn't appear to be any errors occurring...16:18
soeeSporkWitch: are you using propriety drivers ?16:19
BluesKajSporkWitch, no lightdm login page ?16:19
SporkWitchsoee: yup, the recommended nvidia 331's; so that's the cause?16:20
soeeSporkWitch: yes16:20
SporkWitchBluesKaj: no, the Kubuntu[logo] splash before lightdm comes up16:20
SporkWitchgotcha; any way to bring it back while still using them? or is it just gonna be that little thing that annoys me? lol16:20
soeeBluesKaj: plymounth16:20
BluesKajyeah plymouth. ok what about a VT/TTY , can you get a shell. SporkWitch ?16:22
SporkWitchBluesKaj: oh the system is fully functional, it's purely an aesthetic thing16:23
SporkWitchBluesKaj: just while starting up it shows me text and debug info, as opposed to the shiny Kubuntu logo; it's hardly important, i just liked the shiny splash while booting lol16:23
SporkWitchwill look into plymouth after this install finishes (i borked kontact and the related apps hard while trying to copy this laptop's settings to the desktop, and it's still fresh enough it's easier to just nuke it than to try to figure it out lol)16:25
BluesKajok SporkWitch , I was seeing some artifacts too a while back on 14.04, but I'm running 14.10 which also shows some strange notifications and still loads fine16:26
SporkWitchBluesKaj: yeah, soee is saying it's basically normal behaviour when using closed-source drivers, which would explain why i see it on the desktop but not the laptop16:27
SporkWitchhad the same situation in 12.04 as well (I only use LTS releases on these two machines, since i use them for uni and don't want to have to waste time fixing things when i have assignments due)16:27
BluesKajright, I'm a home user so I fool with prereleases a lot16:29
soeeif i remember it right, it is nvidias fault and some bug in their drivers16:30
SporkWitchmakes sense; least the system behaves fine, just a single graphical nuisance that i only see once every couple months when i actually reboot the thing lol16:30
deafpoolhey all16:31
deafpooli have a question about something that showed up in my terminal after an apt-get install, i'm not sure if anyone can help me get to the bottom of it16:31
SporkWitchdon't ask to ask, mate16:32

deafpoolso i installed kdevelop via apt get16:32
deafpoolbut when i was going through my history later, this showed up one line before sudo apt-get install kdevelop:16:33

deafpooli didn't input that into my terminal, so why did it appear in my history before16:33
deafpool'sudo apt get install kdevelop'16:33
=== clansman is now known as steel`afk
SporkWitchseems like it would just be a package id; a lot of times when you go to install something you're just listing the name of a virtual package, that links to the latest version or a collection of others16:36
SporkWitchalso, \n is not punctuation16:36
soeeits more like session hash16:37
deafpoolI see, thanks! It just seemed strange to see it in my terminal commands since I didn't put it in myself. Kind of a linux noob.16:37
deafpoolSo would it be normal to see something like that in my history again after an apt-get install?16:37
BluesKajdeafpool, one is bound to see all manner of strange notifications in the terminal when installing packages, don't become too concerned if you don't understand them16:43

allonHi20:09
allonI upgraded this afternoon from kubuntu 12.04 to 14.0420:09
allonI can see that lots has been done, I am very impressed20:10
allonI just have one small details which bother me20:10
allonI can not find phpmyadmin in muon like before20:10
soeeit should be there i think20:11
soeeim on 14.10beta and i have it here20:11
lordievader!info phpmyadmin20:11
ubottuphpmyadmin (source: phpmyadmin): MySQL web administration tool. In component universe, is extra. Version 4:4.0.10-1 (trusty), package size 4124 kB, installed size 22468 kB20:11
allonI am going to "Découvreur Muon" soory in french20:11
lordievaderallon: sudo apt-get install phpmyadmin20:11
soeedo you have Universe checked in sources ?20:12
allonI think so20:12
allonI look again20:13
allonyes it is checked20:13
allonwhat I do is that I type phpmyadmin in the search area top rigth20:13
allonbut nothing is proposed20:14
lordievaderallon: Are you using the Muon Discoverer thingie?20:14
soeetype in concole: apt-cache policy phpmyadmin20:14
lordievaderSince that one does not show individual packages.20:15
lordievaderThe Muon Packagemanger does though, if it still exists.20:15
soeeoh i thought we are tlaking about Muon20:16
BluesKajallon, install muon itself , that muon discover app is klunky20:16
lordievadersoee: Muon has a few different counter-parts ;)20:16
soeeyup20:16
BluesKajmuon is still available, using it as a reference here on 14.1020:17
lordievaderBluesKaj: The package manager?20:17
BluesKajyes plain old muon20:18
BluesKajsudo apt-get install muon , allon20:18
allonsorry was gone (baby emergency ;) )20:23
allonok this is what I wanted to ask, in 12.04 there was two muon, one like the one I have there and one much more powerful20:24
allonso this is the same there20:24
lordievaderallon: The powerfull one is probably the package manager BluesKaj is talking about.20:24
BluesKajlordievader, no doubt :)20:25
allonmy muon is back :)20:33
allonthanks for the help I would not have searched for it20:33
allonit should really be there by default20:33
BluesKajit's optional i believe, like a lot of my favourite old kubuntu apps, but I give thanks that most are still available20:36
BluesKajlike konversation for example20:37
allonMy Konversation did not works so well on 12.0420:41
allonI had to move to pidgin20:41
allonmaybe it is better now20:41
lordievaderBitlbee :D20:42
BluesKajallon, running konverstion 4.14.0 and it's just fine20:44
allonI will try it then, my problem was about the notifications, they did not always worked20:44
allonwhich was annoying20:45
BluesKajallon, think I ould use quassel before pidgin , but it depands on the chat protocols you want to use20:48
BluesKajwould20:48
allonI only want to use irc20:49
allonI am out of msn skype etc20:49
allonand I feel free :)20:49
BluesKajkonversation is still maintained and new versions are available periodically20:52
soee_i couldnt get used to quaselle, so iv been using x-chat for a while but than moved to konversation and im happy with it since then :)20:52

SporkWitchwhat could cause a program to run fine from a terminal, but not even start when run from the kicker menu? (specifically Steam in this case; "steam" at a terminal works, launching from the kicker gives me launch feedback but never opens steam)20:58
=== AciD`` is now known as AciD`
BluesKajSporkWitch, permissions maybe, using kdesudo to launch ?21:13
SporkWitchBluesKaj: shouldn't need it, never has before (even on this same machine, freshly installed from the same disk, before i nuked it and did another fresh install today)21:14
BluesKajSporkWitch, understood21:18
* BluesKaj <--- not a gamer21:18
SporkWitchBluesKaj: that's just what's so weird about it.  literally "steam" from the terminal works 100% fine.  a kicker entry of "steam" or "/usr/games/steam" starts it downloading the initial updates, then it disappears as if it exited cleanly when it hits about 25MB/~25021:19
SporkWitchBluesKaj: after letting it run and update from the terminal, we switch from still running fine in terminal, to NOTHING occurring when launched from the kicker21:19
SporkWitchi can't figure out what it sees as being any different21:19
SporkWitchand i've never run into the issue before, with anything21:19
SporkWitch(normally if it doesn't launch from the kicker, it at least gives me error output while STILL not running from the terminal)21:20
BluesKajSporkWitch, maybe check the logs , hate to state the obvious but...21:20
SporkWitchBluesKaj: i can't find any :'(21:20
SporkWitchBluesKaj: and there's never anything wrong with stating the obvious; the obvious is always the first to be overlooked21:20
SporkWitchplenty of superusers that miss a cable and think they already plugged it in :)21:21
BluesKaj /var/log/syslog ?21:21
BluesKajyeah been there21:21
SporkWitchno mention of steam in it :(21:21
