=== ikonia_ is now known as ikonia
ner0xEach time I log on my shortcuts Alt+{F1,F2,F3,F4} no longer work. It's typically when I press Alt+F2.01:13
ner0xI think they might be conflicting with a system or default keyboard shortcut. Any ideas?01:13
holsteinner0x: i actually "lost" those with a graphics driver01:15
holsteinner0x: i would try a different keyboard. try the current keyboard with a live CD01:15
ner0xHm... I don't have a different keyboard.01:16
holsteinner0x: tty's are "control+alt+x_01:16
holstein!tty01:16
ubottuTo get to the TTY terminals 1-6, use the keystroke ctrl + alt + F1-F6 respectively (Alt+F7 will get you back to your graphical login).  To change the resolution for your TTY, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ChangeTTYResolution01:16
ner0xWhen you say keyboard, do you mean physical or setting?01:16
holsteinner0x: i would take the actual keyboard and test it with a live CD.. if it seems "normal" with a live CD, i would assume the keyboard is not faulty01:17
ner0xholstein: I know the physical keyboard works just fine; it's a settings issue.01:17
ner0xholstein: I just have to reset them each time I login. They work until I logout after that.01:19
holsteinner0x: you can check your user config by using the guest account, or another user.. then, you can just remove whatever config is "bad" in your users /home01:19
holsteinner0x: ok.. then, you just need to start over01:19
holsteinner0x: you have a setting you make that is not perstent? and you want to know how to make it persitent? what setting?01:20
ner0xholstein: Let me start from the beginning.01:20
ner0xholstein: On a new install I always set Alt+F{1..4} to switch my desktops. It works well on my laptop for some reason my desktop anytime I log in the settings are lost and I must reset them. Alt+F1 works, then Alt+F2 works then the settings disappear. Causing me to go into the keyboard shortcut settings and reset the quick keys. It works uninterrupted after that.01:21
holsteinner0x: laptop is running something other than xfce?01:23
holsteinsounds like you are setting something the window manager is setting back at login.. i would look for another way to set the keyboard shortcuts..01:23
ner0xholstein: No, same exactly version of xubuntu and xfce.01:23
holsteinner0x: well, *something* is different, and i think identifying that will help01:24
ner0xI do plan on viewing the settings I just figured I'd see if this was a well known/common problem. I'll boot the laptop now.01:27
ner0xholstein: Thank you!01:27
ner0xholstein++ # Don't know if they do that here.01:27
xubuntu022I just installed Xubuntu and it appears that my networking is a bit wonky01:51
xubuntu022i am getting random timeouts when trying to update01:52
xubuntu022or hit web pages01:52
xubuntu022has anyone seen that before?01:52
holsteinxubuntu022: sure01:53
holsteinxubuntu022: i have seen that with wifi hardware that doesnt support linux well.. i have seen that with misconfigured networking equipment01:54
holsteinwhat would i do? wire up, if i were on wifi, and "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade"01:55
xubuntu022ok01:55
xubuntu022I am on a wire01:55
xubuntu022maybe its a dns issue01:57
xubuntu022whats the command to list dns servers01:57
xubuntu022its not listed in ifconfig01:57
monkeynauthow do i view my display color depth?   i'm trying to stick with the mesa drivers instead of installing fglrx, but when I do it seems like my display is set to a lower color depth.  some wallpapers don't look as smooth, etc02:11
Unit193xdpyinfo | grep root02:12
monkeynautUnit193: thanks!   24 planes, that's 24 bit, right?02:13
Unit193Aye/02:13
monkeynautis that basically the best i'm going to get?02:13
xubuntu022is it normal for my dns server to be 127.0.0.1#5302:22
xubuntu022I know that is the loopback and 53 is the port DNS uses02:23
xubuntu022but should it not be listing my external dns server?02:23
Unit193Not if you're using resolvconf.02:23
Unit193!resolvconf02:23
ubotturesolvconf is a set of scripts that's used to manage /etc/resolv.conf in 12.04 and later, for more information please see: http://www.stgraber.org/2012/02/24/dns-in-ubuntu-12-04/ and https://help.ubuntu.com/12.04/serverguide/network-configuration.html#name-resolution02:23
xubuntu022ok, thanks02:24
xubuntu022I am just having some intermittent network issues02:24
xubuntu022and I am trying to rule out dns02:24
xubuntu022random timeouts when trying to update and webpages and whatnot02:24
Unit193You can set the DNS in network manager.02:25
Unit193Mmmm.02:25
xubuntu022do you guys have recommendations for dns servers?02:28
Unit193I use my own, but you can use an OpenNIC one or Google's DNS.02:28
xubuntu022I don't know anything about openic02:30
xubuntu022I will check them out02:30
xubuntu022thanks02:30
Quantibilityso im looking to do something that is not recommended03:34
ObrienDaveglwt03:35
Quantibilityi wanna remind everyone here that it is my choice to screw up my computer any way i please. and i just can't get the hang on the documention in the man files03:35
holsteinQuantibility: ?03:36
ObrienDaveabout what?03:36
Quantibilityeh gimme a sec to fromulate my train a  thought.03:36
holsteinQuantibility: consider just backing up your machine properly.. either imaging, or mirroring.. or, play-around/experiement in VM or with a live CD03:36
Quantibilityyes absolutely but im suck on that too.03:37
holsteinQuantibility: suck? you mean, you are "stuck" ? on what, exactly?03:37
Quantibilityi want to back up yes but i need some advice on what to use, i wanna back up my user and installed programs i could care less about linux its self if that makes sense?03:38
holsteinQuantibility: why "installed programs" ?03:38
holsteinQuantibility: the programs you have installed run on linux, if you have them installed into linux.. you cant just "lift" them out and expect them to run elsewhere..03:39
Quantibilityholstein i get that. i don't as a matter of fact,03:39
holsteinQuantibility: an image would keep just that.. an *entire* image of your installed OS.. apps, data, everything.. think "snapshot"03:40
holsteinotherwise, just take the data you want to keep, and put it on another drive or 2.. since *all* hard drives fail03:40
Quantibilityyeah the close your eyes for 5 to 10 mins and open them for a second and close them... that was  a fun experiment which at the time i learned as flash purple. yes i know what a image is, and i guess that was i want to do. what program would be perfect to transfer to external hardrive03:41
e87hdI actually just use a script that runs every so often that copies my data to an external location03:41
holsteinQuantibility: "perfect" is a matter of opinion and use case.. *any* file manager can move filse03:41
holsteinfiles*03:42
holsteinQuantibility: i suggest, try the one in the operating system you are using.. if that doesnt work, read about rsync.. there is a handy GUI for it..03:42
holstein!info grsync03:42
ubottugrsync (source: grsync): GTK+ frontend for rsync. In component universe, is optional. Version 1.2.4-1 (trusty), package size 151 kB, installed size 661 kB03:42
Quantibility<--- still slightly stuck in the windows universe... need input on being able to know how to do what you guys are saying. just copy home folder to <said disk> ?03:43
e87hd!info rsync03:43
ubottursync (source: rsync): fast, versatile, remote (and local) file-copying tool. In component main, is standard. Version 3.1.0-2ubuntu0.1 (trusty), package size 266 kB, installed size 631 kB03:43
holsteinQuantibility: what did you do in windows?03:43
Quantibilityused a fucking button that said backup.03:43
holsteinQuantibility: did you image? or just use the file manger to copy data to another location?03:43
holstein!language03:43
ubottuThe main Ubuntu channels require that you speak in calm, polite English. For other languages, please visit https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IRC/ChannelList03:43
holstein!backup03:43
ubottuThere are many ways to back your system up. Here's a few: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BackupYourSystem , https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DuplicityBackupHowto , https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HomeUserBackup , https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MondoMindi - See also !sbackup and !cloning03:43
holsteinQuantibility: there is a "button" in the GUI of main ubuntu.. ships with it..03:44
holsteini think, personally, it makes more sense to just not break the system.. maybe just take it easy for a while and setup a VM to experiement.. use a live CD03:47
holsteinlearn a method that works for you to backup your important files, and go from there03:48
MrDaveIs anyone else still getting the situation where you can't wake up the machine?  It is a fresh install of 14.04.1 on a VM machine and the change notes appear to indicate that this problem was resolved.03:49
holsteinMrDave: i can say, on metal, im good03:49
MrDaveIs there any logging that I can turn on to try to trace the cause?03:50
Quantibilityim trying to learn the methods to appease my method of madness, i guess, for some stupid reason, i want to make a stable usb "cache" like system to smilar to speed boost on windows..03:50
holsteinyou cant wake the virtual  machine.., correct?03:50
holsteinQuantibility: make what you like.. you wont need that "USB" here, though03:50
MrDavecorrect.  The machine seems to go into screen saver and then clicking does not bring it back to life.03:50
holsteinQuantibility: AFAIK, that usb is similar to the swap file03:50
MrDaveblack screen.03:51
holsteinMrDave: TBH, i have *never* tried to sleep a virtual machine ;)03:51
MrDaveclicking or any key presses does not bring it back up....have to reset(reboot it)03:51
holsteinMrDave: i always just suspend them in the virtualization software03:51
MrDaveI did not change any setting whatsoever....I was working on my host and then came back to the guest (xubuntu) and it doesn't come back up...03:52
MrDaveI was not suspending and bring it back up from suspense...Just not working on it for a while.  12.04 didn't have this prob.03:53
Quantibilitytrue, i don't.  linux is fantastic on this issue, however i do see some programs, like chrome, and jack could use help with the hefty memory it can aquire.. something that can bare that load for a little while to ease the system on other things.03:53
holsteinMrDave: i typically disable any suspending or screen sleeping in the guests.. im not saying thats the issue.. im just saying, maybe that will help you with your guest03:53
holsteinQuantibility: you can make a USB stick with as large of a swap as you like.. i suggest not doing so03:54
MrDavedo you know if xubuntu still has the old and new screen savers?  (Just want to make sure to uninstall and disable them both)03:54
holsteinQuantibility: i would relax the JACK settings.. dont expect such low latency from internal audio devices.. try another browser, or let the maintainers of chrome know you are having issues with its memory usage03:54
Quantibilitywindows can do it but it not suggested on linux, am i to assume there's a power issue on read writes? i never said  i just wanted to swap things.. but i don't understand why its not a "recomended" process.03:55
holsteinQuantibility: its not *necessary* in linux03:55
holsteinQuantibility: if you want to do it, do it.. thats why its not suggested03:55
e87hdholstein, getting double teamed. nice work man! If I see anything I can help with I will jump in and help answer as well :)03:55
holsteine87hd: cheers..03:56
Quantibilityi agree with you holstein, it is not necessary you have no argument from me there..03:56
e87hdif the backup thing is still being discussed03:56
Quantibilityyes03:56
e87hdI would (I do) create a small bash script that rsyncs all the data I want to backup to a secure location03:57
e87hdthen if my stuff breaks (it hasent) I can just reload and copy it back03:57
Quantibilityok, please my i have the rights to your script to use?03:57
holsteinand, grsync is a nice GUI tool that helps one learn. but, i think Quantibility is looking for a "button"03:57
holsteinQuantibility: the script can point to locations that are not for your system..03:58
Quantibilityholstein, its the perverbial button03:58
e87hdmine would not really help you03:58
Quantibilityno need to patronize me :/03:58
holsteinQuantibility: there are *many* such scripts freely available03:58
e87hdsince I am backing up stuff that is important to me03:58
e87hdyou wont have the same folder structure on your machine03:58
e87hddoes that make sense?03:58
holsteinQuantibility: i assure you, i am not intending to patronize anyone.. only volunteering03:58
e87hdfor example03:58
e87hdif I have a folder name clown03:59
e87hdand it lives in /etc/clown03:59
e87hdi would rsync that03:59
e87hdbut chances are, you dont have that03:59
e87hdso the script would fail03:59
Quantibilitye87hd i have understanding of folder structures and such im trying to program myself im just really having a hard time understaning the options in the man files03:59
holsteinQuantibility: in what specific man file for what?03:59
e87hdQuantibility, ah! That helps me understand what you are looking for03:59
e87hdhold on a moment03:59
holsteinQuantibility: the tools listed above are basically using rsync on the backend, and have a "button" for you to press04:00
holstein!backup | Quantibility04:00
ubottuQuantibility: There are many ways to back your system up. Here's a few: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BackupYourSystem , https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DuplicityBackupHowto , https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HomeUserBackup , https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MondoMindi - See also !sbackup and !cloning04:00
e87hdpull down the grsync04:00
e87hdpackage like holstein is saying04:01
e87hdit has a GUI that will help you set it up so you dont have to read the man pages or do command line04:01
e87hdthat should get you going04:01
QuantibilityHolstein, the process of reading the man files is explained perfectly yes, but the way the structured is layed out viewing the material in how the santax is prcocessed. it be nice to get a whole "example" in real use format.04:01
e87hdI have not used it, but I presume it is pretty straight forward04:02
holsteinQuantibility: if you have a question about the syntax in *anything*, state the syntax and ask a question.. a volunteer may be able to help you04:02
holsteinQuantibility: there are *many* examples in real use format available.. and you can generate them with the tool suggested.. grsync04:02
e87hdQuantibility, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grsync04:02
e87hdtake a look at that04:02
e87hdit has a picture04:02
e87hdmight help you understand a bit more04:03
holsteinits handy.. "dry-run" options..04:03
Quantibilityah cool e87hd.. thanks. wicked neat.04:04
e87hdholstein, I had no idea there was a gui, thats neato :P04:05
Quantibilityholstein im fickle in my programming help seeking. most people don't have time to give me a five minute explanation of the code they give me.04:05
holsteinQuantibility: we are not talking about programming ;)04:05
Quantibilityso i try to hunt the answer my self in most the of the man files, get lost, get frustrated wanna kill the world and i need a blunt.04:05
holsteinQuantibility: im saying, if you are looking at a man page, and have a question, ask..04:06
Quantibilityyes i know04:06
Quantibilityholstein i suppose theres a !drugs command?04:06
holsteini agree the man pages can be challenging to parse..04:06
Quantibilitythank you.04:06
holsteinQuantibility: please dont do that here.. use the #xubuntu-offtopic for chat04:06
QuantibilityHolstein, i was just saying that you should add that command since you quick to "parse" them, and don't get me wrong i have mad respect to the wicked intelligent people but please don't belittle my sense of reality.. i do know that i am not allowed, im sorry in advance, but allow me to be me? im not going to cause "drama" i promise, but i don't function well being militarized to restrict my thought.. i promise i will try to be04:09
Quantibility a good boy and all but i won't push after my little fits of whining ok?04:09
holsteinQuantibility: im not attacking or belittling anyone, friend.. if you have a question about a man page.. feel free and ask04:10
Quantibilitythanks.04:10
Quantibilityyes man those man files can get give a good pace in programming a good train wreck04:11
Quantibilityvery frustrating.04:11
holsteinQuantibility: sure.. just ask questions about them if you need help, otherwise, use the #xubuntu-offtopic channel to vent frustrations..04:11
Quantibilitywhats the oder to comple? .configure .make .makeInstall04:20
holsteinQuantibility: i dont.. i just use the packages in the repos.. you really shouldnt need to compile anything.. what are you compiling? and why?04:21
QuantibilityGrsync for backup04:21
holsteinQuantibility: its in the repos04:21
Quantibilityi downloaded the gz04:21
holsteinQuantibility: sure. you dont do it that way.. no need04:22
Quantibilityold fashioned way though eh?04:22
holsteinQuantibility: you can use the software center, or whatever package manager you like.. or the terminal.. sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install grsync04:22
holsteinQuantibility: its not really about that.. its about support.. if you want to build something from source like that, the source creators/maintainers will provide documentation on how to install and use the software.. otherwise, if you want to use xubuntu, just use the provided/supported packages04:23
Quantibilityyeah i get it, maintain continuity.04:24
holsteinQuantibility: there really is no benifit for you to install grsync from source like that.. its only adding frustration and taking you out of the support community04:24
holsteinQuantibility: please check out https://help.ubuntu.com/community/InstallingSoftware04:25
e87hdnow now holstein compiling from source can be fun :)04:26
holsteinQuantibility: what is "Most" like an .exe would be a .deb package, basicallly04:26
holsteine87hd: sure.. go for it04:26
ObrienDavee87hd, as much fun as getting teeth pulled ;P04:26
holsteine87hd: its just that you end up with a package thats not supported here.04:26
Quantibilityholstein yeah it can be fun...04:26
holsteine87hd: if you want to take on supporting Quantibility , you can PM and go for it04:26
Quantibilitynothing like putting together a program that shouldn't run but run anyway lol04:27
holsteinQuantibility: im not commenting on any level of "fun"-ness04:27
holsteinQuantibility: im talking about support for you as a new linux user.. period.. there is no benefit to building that package from source..04:27
e87hdagreed04:27
QuantibilityIs it safe to say that e87hd loves and hates surprises like me?04:27
holsteinQuantibility: if there were a newer version with newer functionality that you needed, i would be happy do discusee the benefits.. there are none for that package04:28
Quantibilityholstein understood and noted.04:28
e87hdnot really, I just learn by breaking things, generally04:28
Quantibilitysame here04:28
e87hdbefore I started down the path I did, certifications and schooling and stuff04:28
e87hdI just broke all my windows and linux machines04:28
e87hdlearned a lot more from that than most of my schooling04:28
holsteini just test with live CD's are much as possible.. the changes are not persitent.. a live USB or VM, and you can save snapshots.. you can break the machine and easily revert04:29
e87hdyep, virtualbox is your friend :)04:29
holsteinthe sure way to fail is, setup *any* new operating system, start playing around on it, and have that be the only machine you have up and running04:30
e87hdhehe, been there done that04:30
e87hdbefore I had a smart phone for a backup google session04:30
e87hdtee hee hee04:30
holsteinif you plan for total failure, and try and remove frustration from the equation, you can learn from those scenarios where you break things and learn to repair04:30
e87hdI do have a question, for some reason *sometimes* when my screen auto locks after I have been afk for awhile, it does not redraw the window correctly. If I enter my password and hit enter, it logs right in and draws the windows right. But sometimes its just garbled text04:32
e87hdhave you seen that before?04:32
holsteine87hd: i have.. with some odd graphics drivers.. via chips.. what is your graphics hardware/driver?04:32
holsteini have seen similar with nvidia..04:33
e87hdhttp://pastebin.com/L1dRKBLJ04:34
e87hd01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF116 [GeForce GTX 550 Ti] (rev a1)04:35
holsteinyeah.. i would try another nvidia driver if you can... i dont know about that specific hardware first hand, but thats my vote. nvidia driver04:35
holsteine87hd: are you using the proprietary driver?04:35
e87hdthats a good question04:35
e87hdI do not believe so04:35
holsteine87hd: should see it in "lspci -v"04:35
e87hdI did not do anything special for it, I just used it however it came up04:35
holsteine87hd: i mean, you can install the proprietary one and have a total different problem.. but its worth a try...04:36
e87hdhttp://pastebin.com/XdVAX1JJ04:36
holsteine87hd: yup.. .nouveau is the open driver.. works well here with all my chips.. but, didnt always04:37
e87hdok, I will head over to nvidia and pull down a proprietary one. Hopefully they already have a .deb. I wouldint want to have to compile anything :P04:38
holsteine87hd: they dont.. but, its in the repos04:38
e87hdah, ok. Let me check the software centre04:38
holsteine87hd: you can try the one in the repos... there is also a ppa from xorg edgers that has typically as fresh as anything you would build from nvidia04:38
holsteine87hd: on the "software soures" GUI, you should see a tab for proprietary or extra drivers04:39
e87hdok04:39
e87hdsearching...searching...searching....04:40
e87hdthere it is04:40
holsteine87hd: id make a note of the package name, just in case you need to remove it manually in a pinch04:41
e87hdgood idea04:41
e87hdalright I will give that a go04:43
Quantibilitye87hd, so what would be the most important folder to back up? home? or what? / root?04:43
e87hddepends on what you want to save Quantibility04:43
holsteinQuantibility: "important" is a matter of use case..04:43
e87hdif its documents and things, then just /home is probably fine04:44
holsteinQuantibility: the /home directory has hidden directories in it that applications store settings in04:44
e87hdhowever, if you have custom configs that you built for certain packages, then you might want to back that up to04:44
e87hdlike fail2ban settings or something04:45
Quantibilityhome, root, and sys?04:45
e87hddont think you are running that though04:45
holsteinQuantibility: if you backup .mozzila, and reinstall your OS and install firefox, and put that backup of .mozzila back, then firefox will basically pick back up from there04:45
holsteinQuantibility: why root? why sys?04:45
Quantibilityhome should be satisfacory then?04:45
holsteinQuantibility: /home has your data, and the configs for the applications for your user.. the other things are freely available to you to download anytime04:45
holsteinQuantibility: "satisfactory" is also a matter of opinion..04:46
e87hdI would start with /home04:46
holsteinQuantibility: what i do is, i backup what i need.. if i need my data, i grab that.. if i need configs for applications from /home, i grab them04:46
e87hdif you dont know what else you need04:46
e87hdthen that should be all you need :P04:46
holsteini sync *anything* that is just in one location that i *must* have.. since all hard drives fail04:47
e87hdtime for bed and stuff04:53
e87hdhave a good night04:53
akishi all. does anyone knows why on 14.04 software updater reminder doesn't show an icon on 'notification area'? is there any way to fix that working like on 12.04?05:00
holsteinakis: how did it work in 12.04?05:03
Quantibilityi guess home folder was all i needed, its been 15 mins and still going05:06
akisholstein: on 12.04 every time there was an available update there was: 1) a pop-up notification & 2) there was an 'orange star' on notification area. if user clicked on this 'orange star' could access software updater and run updates. now it just open a new application window and thw running application can be shown in panel as a window panel. nothing more.05:06
holsteinQuantibility: i would test a few smaller locations.. and make sure i understand how grsync works before working on my home partition like that05:07
holsteinakis: thats all im aware of05:07
holsteinakis: i use "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" manually, and disable *all* pop-ups05:07
Quantibilityi have a android SDK with all of the avaiable libraries.05:08
holsteinakis: i see that you "fixed" the issue with your ipv6 support.. feel free and file a wishlist bug for the updater.. im out for the night.. you can always ask in #ubuntu and see whats going on with the updater up there05:08
holsteinQuantibility: good luck.. a test on smaller less "important" data is what i suggest.. cheers05:09
akisholstein: manual search for update is an option, but i am wondering how it can be fixed the auto-update reminder in 14.04 like was on 12.04. i dont think that it couldn't be fixed it. yea...i fixed my 'slow internet'. many thanks to other users they have the same problem and they have already fixed it.05:10
holsteinakis: no, it cant be "fixed" since its not broken.. its just changed.. as i said, feel free and file a wishlist bug05:11
brigitte14.04, x-Oberflaeche reparieren nach  misslungener libreoffice calc Installation05:23
akisholstein: fixed or changed the result is the same for me. i have a fast internet browsing !05:23
akisi am asking again i problem i faced yesterday i case that someone expert can help me. Yesterday i tried to move from one user account to another , a directory containing other directories and i gave the command sudo mv /home/user/* /home/user_other/ . The system didnt return any error message, worked for a couple of minutes (because the whole directory's size was about 5 gb). After the system returned to command prompt i checked if the files we05:23
akisre moved to destination user account and i realized that although  the files were not any more in /home/user (source account) there were not also in /home/user_other (destination account). In your opinion  what happened and the files disappeared? Are they still lived somewhere on my disk or they just deleted? Or maybe they changed their names? Is it possible to be transfered somewhere else (i.e. inside root file system)? I have to mention that05:23
akisas i had a copy of these files i returned for a second try and i gave this time cp -r /home/user/directory /home/user_other/ and the whole directory with all subdirectories copied succesfully. But still i am05:23
akiswondering if i made any damage to my system or i sent those files with my first command somewhere else. Any idea? I read that mv command can also rename files. Is it possible that my files are renamed and still live in /home (source directory) with new names?05:23

zleapis it possible to add remote desktop login to the xubuntu 14.04 login screen ?15:08
zleapi am trying to google this,  i can use remmina to login to my raspberry pi remotely15:08
holsteinzleap: not that im aware of.. there are some thin client aimed distros that used to do something like that, but remmina is what i would use15:11
zleapok15:11
zleapthus was possible with ubuntu i think15:11
zleapok no problem15:11
holsteinzleap: xubuntu *is* ubuntu15:12
zleapi know15:13
zleapbut uses a different login manager15:13
holsteinzleap: so, take a step back, realize that its actually *not* the "xubuntu 14.04 login screen", and that you can use the greeter ubuntu uses, or read about how to edit lightdm yourself.. or use a completely different login manager15:13
holsteinzleap: actually, AFAIK, they are the same.. just configured differently15:14
zleapah ok15:14
zleaplightdm15:14
zleapi will go and find the info on that,  thanks15:14

nivyanHi! Would it be possible for someone to help me regarding a login problem I have with xubuntu?15:28
holsteinnivyan: just ask.. a volunteer may be able to assist15:29
nivyanCool; It's kinda simple really. Today I updated everything and after the update, whenever I try and login I immedieately get logged out again.15:29
holsteinnivyan: i bet that what is happening is more like this.. you login, and your desktop session crashes15:30
holsteinnivyan: you could have ppa's added, or something else that is "breaking" your desktop session.. i would test with the guest account, and see if all is "normal"15:31
GridCubenivyan, login into the guest account, open a terminal and type >> sudo thunar << go to your /home/user/ directory, press ctrl-h to show hidden files, delete the files named .Xauthority and .ICEauthority, log off the guest account and relog using the standard account15:31
holstein^^ is what i suggest as well, nivyan15:31
nivyangimme a sec15:31
nivyanOMFG THAT'S FUCKING MAGIC15:32
nivyanI've been googling this for like 5 hours15:32
nivyanThanks a million15:33
GridCubeeven if you know how something is done, that doesn't make it less magical15:33
nivyanhaha :D15:33
holstein!language15:33
ubottuThe main Ubuntu channels require that you speak in calm, polite English. For other languages, please visit https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IRC/ChannelList15:33
holsteinthough, im glad you got it sorted :)15:33
nivyanI got another one for you magicians then; whenever I boot i get lots of 'system program problem detected' pop-ups, but it's never seemed to cause a problem (that I'm aware of) is there a way I can log the errors and pastebin them, so they can be looked at?15:34
nivyan(boot, as in after login)15:34
holsteinnivyan: have you added PPA's?15:34
holsteinnivyan: i usually try and isolate the users config and see if the issues are in there..15:35
GridCubenivyan, have you updated to 14.04.1?15:35
nivyanProbably15:35
nivyanProbably --> Holstein15:35
nivyanI updated today, I might have updated to 14.04.1 without knowing15:35
=== brainwash_ is now known as brainwash
GridCubenivyan, lsb_release -a should tell you15:36
nivyanI've updated to 14.04.115:36
nivyan:D15:36
holsteinnivyan: i would look and see if i have any sources that could be causing the issue.. i would try and isolate my user config.. i would see that i have all updates applied.. etc15:37
nivyanIs it possible to initiate a log from login and see what's causing errors?15:39
nivyanand I'll check immediately15:39
holsteinnivyan: im sure there is.. you can also try #ubuntu channel for that.. i personally just try and isolate, since im not a "Read a log and parse error" type of user15:40
nivyanI agree with that viewpoint; I've just reached a state of frustration where I'm up for anything that works15:41
GridCubenivyan, if you choose to report it it will show you what it is15:42
GridCubebut i think i know what your issue is15:42
GridCubeand if its what i think it is, the report will simply fail15:42
nivyanWhat should I do ?15:42
GridCubenothing really, if im not mistaken is a problem with a report that was not properly sent, or something like that, and it just fails each time, its not really bothering you except for the clicking to "no" each time, at least that is in my case15:43
nivyanholstein; I've checked and I got a few PPA' that i'm sure about - can I just remove them, or will that cause... problems?15:45
nivyanthat i'm not so sure about*15:45
GridCubeit depends on your use of those ppas15:45
nivyanthat's the thing; there are a few I don't know where come from - then there is like dropbox which I know for certain I need15:46
holsteinnivyan: im not saying that is the problem, just that its plausible15:49
nivyanI know, I'm just trying to understand what could cause the problem15:50
holsteinnivyan: if i had a problematic system like that, i would read the error messages at boot, and search each one.. or, i would ask the reporter not to report any more, and just use the system, if the errors are just "messages"15:50
holsteinnivyan: any 3rd party unsupported package from those ppa's could be the problem15:50
nivyanroger - brb one sec15:51

nivyanCan I safely assume that Java and 'prominent' software like Wine are 'safe' ?15:53
ubottucourtneychi: Help with Broadcom bcm43xx can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx15:53
holsteinnivyan: "Safe" is usually a matter of opinion and use case15:53
nivyanthat's what I was thinking15:53
holsteinnivyan: plus, "safe" is not what you are dealling with.. what errors specifically are you seeing? if they are just messages, i would just report, and move on15:54
nivyanholstein; thing is that even if I report them - they're there every single time I boot and I'm worried my own system is whats causing them15:54
GridCubenivyan, did they appeared when you logged in as guest?15:57
nivyan...15:57
nivyanlet me chekc, just realized I should've checked15:57
nivyanGridCube: they do not15:58
holsteinnivyan: then, they are issues with your user config.. *not* with ubuntu/xubuntu..15:58
GridCubethen delete your ~/.config/xfce4 folder, that should reset your configs to default, and, in theory, get rid of this15:58
nivyanawesome! gimme a sec15:59
holstein^^ thats what i would try.. you can even just move it out of the way15:59
GridCubenivyan, also never blindfully trust a stranger on the internet15:59
nivyanIt's ubuntu, at least I know how to reinstall if all else fails :P16:00
holsteinnot even here.. feel free and research the commands.. though, you can trust GridCube :)16:00
nivyanif I use rm, it denies me the abiliy to delete because its a directory?16:00
holsteinnivyan: you can just do it like before.. with the control+h parameter in the file manager.. you can just rename it if you are "neverous" removing16:01
drcnivyan: Just rename it16:01
drcalso man rm :)16:01
nivyanwell, that was much easier than using terminal16:02
nivyanthen just relog?16:02
holsteinnivyan: when you logout and backin, the user will be using the newer default configs generated.. and thus, potentially dealing wiht the "errors"16:02
nivyanone step closer; I had 1 error in the center that's not gone. But I still got quite a few (for some reason) located at top-left corner16:03
nivyan8 of them :P16:03
GridCubenivyan, technically, just technically, you can remove the whole .config folder16:04
GridCubeit will all of it respawn16:05
nivyan...that's technically what I did :P16:05
GridCubeyou will lose all your configs and settings16:05
nivyanI know, I don't mind16:05
GridCubethere are many other folders on your ~/ you can mess with16:05
GridCubeyou can always create a new user P:16:05
nivyanyou're right; I'll just create another user actually :P - thanks a million for your help GridCube & holstein - you've saved at least 2-3 days of googling for me16:06
holsteinnivyan: if things are "Normal" In the new user, you can assume the issue is in the users /home.. you can always clear out all the .hidden files16:08
holsteini'll just move them out of the way, and test.. them, put back the application specific ones i need/want16:08
nivyanah that makes sense; I'll try that before adding a user16:08
nivyanthanks a million, I'll return when I'm out of hope again :D - thanks again16:10
