xgarlics_Hi, I have a problem with LibreOffice and its integration with KDE. the libreoffice-kde package only works in certain respects, the dialogs and windows are not integrated and keeps unsightly. libreoffice-gtk with improvement, but gives very annoying "flicker" effect. Is there any solution for this?00:28

lordievaderThanks TheFakeazneD52508:30
nova_thanks lordievader ill keep that in mind.  I'm still not entirely sure what the root of my problem is....I think networking should work even without vmware tools installed..how else would one get the build dependencies.08:40
nova_all i really know is my networking stopped networking, no adapter shows up.08:41
lordievadernova_: What does "lspci -k|grep -A3 Network" give?08:52
nova_I've reverted to a copy of a 5 month old backup, and so far I've removed vmware tools and installed open-vm-tools, and I've only gotten about as far as being able to see that the screen resolution isn't scaling properly.  1 sec let me try that command and I'll get back to you08:53
nova_i need to switch back to the borked vm08:53
=== clansman is now known as steel`afk
nova_lordievader I ran that command, it produced no results08:57
lordievadernova_: So you have no network adapter.08:58
nova_that's what it seems like08:58
nova_i think the vmware tools thing was more of a rabbit i was chasing.08:59
nova_I'm not sure what made the network adapter vanish08:59
lordievadernova_: The vmware tools are responsible for the network adapter?09:00
nova_I'm not sure..I thought they at least enhanced the capabilities of the adapter..but I know you don't have to have tools installed for the adapter to work09:01
lordievadernova_: I have too litle experience with vmware to know. However it could be that it installs a kernel module. Now if the update contained a kernel update it could be that for that kernel the module is missing.09:03
nova_I checked the VM settings and the virtual adapter is still there09:03
lordievadernova_: What type is it?09:03
nova_as in what is the name of the emulated adapter?09:05
lordievadernova_: No what type. IRRC you could select different adapter types. What kind of card it tries to emulate.09:06
nova_yeah im trying to recall how i find that information09:07
nova_according to this (http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-55/index.jsp#com.vmware.vsphere.vm_admin.doc/GUID-AF9E24A8-2CFA-447B-AC83-35D563119667.html) it can be e1000, vmxnet, vmxnet2, vmxnet3, etc09:10
nova_it looks like e1000 is the only adapter type option that has a "real hardware counterpart"09:11
nova_and that vmxnet0-3 require vmware tools to be installed09:11
lordievadernova_: Is it set to e1000?09:13
nova_I haven't found a setting in VMWare Workstation to allows you to choose one way or the other09:14
lordievadernova_: Hmm, that driver should work out of the box.09:14
nova_It's not something I've ever really had to fight with..it just worked out of the box with or without vmware tools09:14
nova_this is a vm that i've used everyday for the last 2 years about09:15
nova_its seen a couple dist upgrades09:15
lordievadernova_: Does "grep e1000 /var/log/kern.log" return anything?09:19
nova_let me try09:20
nova_it returns nothing09:22
lordievadernova_: Could you pastebin the output of "dmidecode"?09:24
nova_i think so let me try...also i should mention im currently using a xubuntu 14.10 VM for IRC here, which is fairly similar to the kubuntu 14.10 for the most part...if theres anything we need to compare between the two09:25
nova_http://pastebin.com/4muQ67cY09:30
nova_the usb stick idea worked out well.....sometimes i forget what floppy disks were used for before internets and networking : P09:31
lordievaderI'm not entirely sure but it seems the adapter is not recognized. What happens when you remove it, boot it up, shut it down. Add the adapter again and boot it up again?09:35
nova_i guess i can try that..it hadn't occured to me to try yet...ill do that and get back to you in a couple minutes09:36
=== steel`afk is now known as clansman
nova_I shut it down, and removed the virtual adapter, restarted, shut down again, added the adapter again, and restarted...nothing changed unfortunately09:42
lordievadernova_: Perhaps you should start asking in #vmware ;)09:43
nova_i also tried "disconnecting/connecting"09:43
nova_yes perhaps...I just thought I should start here because the trouble happened after a kubuntu update...I havent changed a thing with vmware at all...and as I said I'm using Xubuntu 14.10 with kernel 3.13 as a VM.  Not that any of that rules out some quirk with vmware, but I was thinking it pointed more toward a problem with the update or a hitch in the update process09:45
nova_I might try updating my 5 month old backup and see if the problem happens again09:47
nova_Thank you for the assistance though.  I appreciate it.  I'll check back in if I find out anything more.09:49
lordievaderTrue, but not seeing a sign of the adapter points somewhat towards the vmware part.09:49
lordievadernova_: Yeah, let me know when you find a fix ;)09:49
nova_yes...it's almost as if i hit some magic hotkey combo and flipped off the adapter...but as far as i know that doesn't exist....or does it?09:49
lordievadernova_: Perhaps vmware does have such a key combo?09:51

RCDeetwhat's the trick to get any of the folders or files on an external drive to be shared and actually allow a windows computer to access them?16:39
lordievaderRCDeet: How do you mean that?16:41
RCDeetmy local files share with out a problem16:42
RCDeetevery time i set a folder on my external, it sets permission that only the owner has access and everyone else is forbidden16:42
RCDeeti cant change these permissions16:42
RCDeetand windows/android devices cant view the files on the external drive but they can view the local files just fine16:43

RCDeeti'm sharing on kubuntu16:43
lordievaderRCDeet: How do you share your files from Kubuntu with Windows.16:44
RCDeetah16:44
RCDeetright click, sharing, everyone gets readonly, owner gets full access16:45
RCDeetunder the permissions it automatically sets the same thing for local files16:46
RCDeetexternal get forbidden for everyone16:46
lordievaderRCDeet: So you use Samba. When you open them on Windows do you use any credentials or do you use an anonymous account?16:47
RCDeetfor local files no. for the external it tells me my creds are no good. doesn't give an option to log in. if i map the drive i try using my log in but no dice16:48
lordievaderRCDeet: Who is the owner of the files?16:48
RCDeetme16:49
RCDeetmy local account16:49
lordievaderRCDeet: Does it work when you give everyone read acces?16:51
RCDeetnope, because it refuses to accept the permission change16:52
lordievaderRCDeet: So the files are not owned by you. Please give me the output of "ls -l <dir-in-question>"16:54
RCDeetwell if i right click on them, under permissions, it say i own them. but i'll get that16:55

And as I have studied in the previous hour, it seems that kubuntu ships with lightdm instead of kdm (14.04). Anyway, I appreciate your effort, mate!17:00
iceman2160now, back yo study, can't get autorotate to work with my monitor, but that's least of my problems for now.17:00
