BlasterI just have to get the UUID of that external so I can add an fstab entry.03:48
tewardBlaster: FWIW though, the manpages are useful :)03:49
BlasterYeah I was reading it, I'm looking at the Mount options for ntfs right now.03:49
sydneyhmm,i think its fixed. :)03:50
BlasterMy device is located at /dev/sdc1 but `blkid /dev/sdc1` doesn't give an output.03:51
BlasterTrying to get the UUID.03:51
BlasterOkay I could see it by doing `ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid` and it says it's like `10408FCA808FBA54`.03:52
BlasterThat doesn't even look like a UUID to me teward.03:52
gr33n7007hBlaster, just blkid, see what pops up03:53
BlasterRead ^.03:53
BlasterI did blkid and nothing came up.03:53
tewardBlaster: sudo blkid03:53
BlasterWise.03:54
BlasterSo apparently that is the UUID.  Doesn't look like any of the ones I have seen before though.03:54
Blasterteward: The man pages don't even mention the fmask and dmask options, all I see is uid, gid, and umask.03:59
tewardBlaster: true i was answering your question earlier ;)03:59
tewarduid = user id, gid = group id, umask = permissions mask of what isn't present (like before)04:00
BlasterThat askubuntu answer says to use those.04:00
Blasterfmask and dmask.04:00
tewardBlaster: use whichever, but before making an fstab entry try just providing them as mount options04:00
tewardnote experimentation sometimes bricks drives04:01
Blasterteward: What do you mean by "permissions mask of what isn't present".04:01
teward(NTFS and UNIX file permissions are always going to be problematic like this)04:01
tewardBlaster: did you see my initial answer to your first question of what the arguments meant?04:01
BlasterThere is sensitive data on this drive.04:01
BlasterYes.04:01
teward[2014/09/14 23:48:02] <teward> Blaster: ...  umask = bit mask of the permissions that are NOT present.  (i.e. 0022 = 755 basically)04:01
tewardand with that, sleep time, it's late04:02
BlasterI just don't get what you mean by not present.04:02
BlasterOkay.04:02
BlasterThanks for the help!04:02

wafflejockdamccull: also if you just backup your .config folders in your home folder you can usually see what you had installed and just get the latest of that07:17
damccullwhat .config folder?07:17
wafflejockdamccull: if you have a NAS or external drive use clonezilla to get a full snapshot or rsync to copy your home folder and whatever else you might want first07:17
wafflejockdamccull: just mean general dot files in your home folder07:18
damccullah i see07:18
waykool99years ago apt-get autoremove -or- Janitor used to trash libcssdvd2. (spelling)07:18
wafflejockdamccull: the hidden files for various programs like .filezilla or whatever07:18
damccullactually i can't NAS this :( It's a remote server07:18
damccullaside from my home dir, where else might i want to save configuration from?07:18
wafflejockdamccull: ah well you should be able to still rsync, is it a VPS? if so usually you have a snapshot option07:18
wafflejockdamccull: /etc/ will have other config stuff at a system level07:19
damccullit's a vps yes. I have taken a backup, but I still have to download my stuff cause my provider doesn't have a way to mount backups as readable07:20
damcculland i need to image the vps with their 14.04 template07:20
wafflejockdamccull: ah gotcha, can't just spin up an extra instance for transferring things?07:20
damccullwafflejock: i spose if i wanted to pay for another instance this month ;)07:20
waykool99i have lots of spare ATA/SATA drives. is it possible to create an "image" or DVD ISO or even save a great install to another empty HD?07:20
wafflejockdamccull: well shouldn't be for the whole month you using DO or AWS?07:21

waykool99hm. ok.07:21
damccullit's not that it would cost the hwole month07:21
wafflejockjust sayin it's good to have a plan for how you can get stuff back that you forgot to back up, it's all good I like to save money too :)07:21
damccullit's just annoying to do. they don't have an automatic "clone this machine" button, and to create a new instance I'd have to purchase more resources, spin up a new one, then move everything, shut down this one, release these resources... annoying :)07:22
wafflejockyeah gotcha07:22
damccullbut they're CHEAP07:22
damccullAWS wants ALL my monies :(07:22
damccullalso MS and google07:22

wafflejockDO you can get for $5 a month check the last link might be good07:24
damccullk07:24
damcculli like togglebox's capabilites but i don't really use it to the extent it's useful for07:24
wafflejockeh yeah same with AWS for me, it can do way more than I need most of the time07:25
wafflejockbut I like the ability to scale things relatively easily, expanding the box size and starting a new instance wasn't too bad when I needed it07:25
damccullwow DO is nice07:25
wafflejockstarted with a micro instance for free for a year07:25
wafflejockyeah DO is pretty decent07:25
wafflejock if I didn't setup AWS first I would have probably gone DO07:25
damccullAWS seems hard. Don't you ahve to write scripts and use APIs to do all the stuff?07:25
wafflejockno their interface is okay once you get used to it you can do most things there07:25
wafflejockthe scripts are nice thing though if you want to automate the backup, upgrade process07:26
damccullhmm07:26
wafflejockit's just a lot of AWS specific terminology07:26
wafflejockEBS EC2 S3 etc. etc.07:26
damccullwhat about storage? i thought you had to have a separate storage plan from the main box07:26
wafflejockI have an EBS backed instance, so it's all under one account and I basically created a volume that lives beyond the life of the EC2 instance07:27
wafflejockit is more complicated for sure07:27
damccullhmm07:27
damccullyeah sounds lame. :)07:27

cfhowlettwafflejock, I suspect msoft is equally concerned.08:13
damcculland users are like "EWW 1970s!"08:13

wafflejockstill requires someone willing to tweak things and add plugins to do the same stuff, but can do a bit more it seems08:15
wafflejockyeah08:15
damccullthe advantage MS has over linux, and always will, is a single, unified brand. They can integrate everything with everything else, make it work out of the box, and transparently to users. It's like the Apple of OS/Office08:16
damcculltoo bad they can't seem to get IE right08:16
wafflejockeh I dunno I really think Linux distros are getting better and better at creating a complete experience08:16
wafflejockI just switched between Unity on 12.04 and the Kubuntu using all the KDE stuff in 12.04 and now in Gnome on 14.04 and have played with Mint and some other distros/DEs and there's some pretty complete toolsets08:17
damccullthey are, but they are still using programs written by 3rd parties, or having to write their own. Their teams, being much smaller, take much longer to write quality software that is super integrated08:17
wafflejockyeah it takes a long time but it's been like 22 years or something08:17
damccullhaha08:18
cfhowlettdamccull, that's the linux/unix development mantra ... each tool does ONE thing and does ONE thing well.  kind of works AGAINST any meaningful/workable integration.08:18
damccullcfhowlett: i know :( but users generally don't want that. They want to click, drag, and copy/paste from anything to anything08:19
wafflejockcfhowlett: yeah but I don't think that's a problem we have lots of little tools that do one thing and do it well and if GUIs are built to wrap those tools that do one thing well together then you have outlook08:19
wafflejockOutlook started off as 4 separate applications in MS08:19
wafflejockthey just smashed them together08:19

damccullgod i hate outlook08:19
damccullit pisses me off that you HAVE to install it with office 201308:20
wafflejockthat's pretty funny I don't think I've met someone who hates outlook so much, I always thought it was fine but I haven't used any of the recent versions08:20
damccullhere's my linux wishlist: I want all my games native, ms office native (no outlook), and a super-quick snappy UI that looks REAL sharp and isn't hard to get to know or understand. it must be simple and elegant, but give me the tweak power I want under the hood.08:21
wafflejockcfhowlett: I have hopes that Qt or something like it will help to make building widgets that can be integrated into larger applications so we can more easily share and create robust GUIs using all the little underlying parts08:22
damccullwafflejock: lol yeah it's cause it's bloated, slow, ugly, and until VERY recently, did not organize my conversations08:22
damccullwafflejock: also i only use the 1 part of it: email08:22

samthewildoneHow do I remove a | uninstall a .run file and its packages...08:45
samthewildoneI recently downloaded a .run from hp..open source and the drivers didn't work.08:45
samthewildoneI did the "file name.run --help" but there isn't a removal option.08:46
damccullwtf is a .run?08:47
wafflejockdamccull: sometimes vendors package scripts and give them a .run extension08:48
wafflejockdamccull: nvidia does the same08:48
damccullwerid08:48
wafflejocksamthewildone: not sure you'd have to check out the README with the run file, for HP though I used mostly their open source stuff and it worked I just needed a script from HP for wireless scanning08:48
samthewildonedamccull, windows equivalent to .exe08:49
samthewildonewafflejock, problem is I'm just connected my printer to my router but, router does not show printer in the devices configuration.08:49
wafflejocksamthewildone: hmm strange typically the hplip package has all the stuff needed for wired printing08:50
samthewildonePrinter works fine with direct connection to computer but, not when it is connected to the router. I contacted HP and they said pretty much all plug in play printers work with their EA6300 model.08:50
damccullsamthewildone: so a .run is a binary file with a program entry point?08:50
atmosxEasiest way to connect to an Ubuntu computer remotely using a mac? :-)08:50
samthewildonedamccull, something like that.08:50
damcculldumb08:50
damccullneeds to be an exe then ;)08:50
damcculleveryone knows what exe is08:51
samthewildonedamccull, to uninstall that binary file they usually have a param like "--uninstall | --remove"08:51
samthewildoneI know the nvidia installer has the function.08:51
samthewildonewafflejock, Again, once the printer is connect directly to computer, works like a charm. Once its connected directly to router its a ghost.08:52
wafflejocksamthewildone: yeah not sure about the router based printing, I have the option on my router but I got a wireless printer anyhow so never used it08:52
samthewildoneEarlier people were telling me that in order for this to work the printer has to be assigned a address.08:52
wafflejocksamthewildone: probably not if it's being used via the USB on the router08:53
wafflejockit should be like a shared printer from the router08:53
samthewildonewafflejock, yeah...08:53
samthewildonewafflejock, that's what I thought. Once the router verified the printer it will automatically append the MAC / IP address.08:53
samthewildoneSo probably could be the cable ?08:53
wafflejockno idea really on that one... can you ssh into the router and check lsusb08:54
samthewildonenope08:54
samthewildoneI don't even fully understand ssh yet.08:54
samthewildonewhy would I ssh into router ?08:54
wafflejockwell if you ssh in then you can run lsusb and see the USB connected devices08:55
wafflejockyea dunno then... I went with a DDWRT based buffalo router last time in case I wanted to mess with that stuff but so far have just been happy with how it works :)08:55
wafflejockDDWRT has the option for SSHing in but I don't think it's a standard thing on home routers08:55
samthewildoneah Ha08:55
samthewildonefound the uninstaller !08:55
samthewildoneit was "hp-uninstall"08:55
wafflejockah nice08:55
samthewildonereason I'm uninstalling, ubuntu has one in their software repo.08:56
Ben64should always check there first :)08:56
wafflejockyeah there is a hplip package for basic stuff and some hp toolbox gui parts08:56
samthewildoneBen64, now... I figured that out my friend.08:56
samthewildoneFirst things first is I gotta figure out whats going on with the connection.08:56
samthewildoneI think the only sensible thing to do is reset the router to fact default and try from there ?08:57
wafflejocksamthewildone: yeah would need the manual for the router to help remotely any more I think08:57
samthewildonecompletely unrelated atm but, http://pastebin.com/KhfmBPcU08:58
samthewildonefigured to post it to my account as archive...08:58
Fuchshmm, any idea why lightdm would not display my prefered language / keyboard layout? It only displays de_DE, but I want ch (de_CH).  The local is there and generated, every application is perfectly fine with it, only lightdm not.08:59
samthewildoneIf I'm going to reset the router I'm going to have to wait later in the day.08:59
samthewildonewafflejock, another problem I'm having is that my desktop does not show up in the router config.09:00
samthewildoneEverything else in the house connected; except printer & my desktop, shows...09:00
wafflejocksamthewildone: that's strange you mean you don't see it in the DHCP list?09:00
samthewildonenope09:00
samthewildoneSo thinking that the router must be reset anyway.09:00
samthewildoneI'm able to see other wifi devices and my dad's hardline cable connected but, not mine.09:00
wafflejockyea assuming you didn't set any static IPs it should generally be in the list09:01
samthewildoneAt first I thought it was because I had encrypted my drive.09:01
wafflejockyeah shouldn't matter regarding the network/IPs though09:01
wafflejockthe router should know what addresses it gave out09:01
atmosxI can create users without passwords! Awesome.09:02
samthewildonewafflejock, Yeah once the house is cleared of rodents (parents) I'll commit the hard reset.09:02
samthewildoneatmosx, one kernel mod for you !09:02
* samthewildone passes atmosx a tasty kernel mod.09:02
damcculla way to copy and chown at the same time?09:03
samthewildonewafflejock, I'm wondering though, should I install the drivers first or let the default ubuntu drivers do the work.09:03
samthewildoneI'm probably going to let the default drivers take over.09:04
wafflejocksamthewildone: would go with the default drivers at first unless they lack some capability should be fine for all the "wired" stuff09:04
atmosxsamthewildone: was a kernel model that made this possible? :-) smart move09:04
wafflejocksamthewildone: I only had issues when I wanted to wirelessly scan09:04
samthewildonethis printer does not scan...09:04
wafflejockshould be fine then09:04

wafflejockatmosx: you can add it to startup applications09:06

smart_developerI was able to get logrotate to rotate my_log.log just fine (at the top of the hour), but it seems that my new (fresh, 0 Bytes) my_log.log isn't being written to.09:20
smart_developerI'm using rsyslog to direct log output to my_log.log.09:20
smart_developerDoes anyone know what is going wrong here? Thanks.09:20
ikoniasmart_developer: depends how you are logrotating the physical file09:20
ikoniasmart_developer: if the file is closed, you'd need to hup syslog09:21
smart_developerhup syslog ?09:21
smart_developerand what do you mean "if the file is closed"?09:22
ikoniasmart_developer: if you zero an open file syslog will keep logging, if you close and replace a file, syslog can't log to it as it's not opened by syslog09:22
smart_developerI'm using rsyslog to direct output to my_log.log, not syslog.09:23
ikoniaI know09:23

wafflejockTex_Nick: yeah I've heard chatter about this thanks for the links09:23
smart_developerO09:23
smart_developerthat O was a typo.09:24
smart_developerWhat I'm trying to say is that I'm confused because you kept mentioning syslog.09:24
ikoniasyslog is the process that logs system messages09:24
smart_developerthen what's rsyslog?09:24
smart_developerin relation to all of this.09:24
smart_developerthanks.09:24
ikoniarsyslog is the binary09:24
smart_developerSo how would you "hup" syslog ?09:25
smart_developerand what do you mean by hup?09:25
smart_developerLet me post a link to my logrotate file for my_log.log.09:25
ikoniadon't bother09:25
ikoniayou ned to restart rsyslog09:26
ikonianormally this is part of the logrotate definition09:26
smart_developerFrom the man pages for logrotate, I'm not sure where in this logrotate definition file I would specify restarting rsyslog: http://paste.ubuntu.com/8349201/09:27
ikoniasmart_developer: then read the docs09:27
smart_developer(more specifically, what I would type there).09:27
ikoniafirst manually restart the syslog to prove it works/that is the problem09:28
smart_developerok09:28
ikoniathen read the logrotate docs about restarting a service as part of the definition09:28
smart_developerother than the man pages (which I've already read most of), which docs would you be referring to?09:29
ikoniathe project documentation09:29
smart_developerok09:29
smart_developerAnd also, I'm not sure about this approach of restarting rsyslog each time logrotate rotates my_log.log, since I don't know what impact it would have on the other logs (for instance, the system logs)....09:30
smart_developerwould it fail to write some important log output while rsyslog is being restarted?09:30
smart_developerduring that (brief) period of time...?09:31
smart_developerand if so, is there a more prudent method?09:31
smart_developerof rotating a log09:31
ikoniait will have the same impact09:31
smart_developerikonia : okay, I see.09:32
smart_developeryou mentioned something about how just zero-ing out a log would allow rsyslog to keep writing to it, without having to restart rsyslog.09:32
ikoniaI think you need to read the documentation09:32
smart_developerShould I do this with logrotate?09:33
ikoniayou appear to be trying to do this without the information09:33

Aussie_mattCan anyone tell me, if i get a new cpu without hyperthreading, will I notice it for normal desktop use/email/browsing?12:30
wheatthinAussie_matt, Umm depends.. I have a dual quad core xeon that does just fine without hyperthreading12:33
zomGreg-mAussie_matt: Likely not.12:33
wafflejockAussie_matt: probably not a huge deal I've turned it on and off on my desktop quadcore (pretty old but 3.0GHz) and it doesn't matter much12:33

Aussie_mattthe reason I ask, I'm looking at lashing out on the new pentium 3258 which can be overclocked, but it has no hyperthreading....so I'm not sure how it'll go in linux: in windows gaming it's great they reckon12:34
wheatthinAussie_matt, then you shouldn't have any problems.. any problems I'd think you'd run into are thermal12:35
Aussie_mattwheatthin: financial more like it :)12:35

MarkedOneprawn: hmmm you are right14:01
MarkedOneprawn: can i ask you ? is there a need to have encrypted home ?14:01
prawnminimec i'll look for one.14:01
prawnMarkedOne a need? depends on whether you suspect someone might want to look at your hard drive and what you want that person to (not) find14:02
prawnin general, there's no requirement for this. if you don't care about your privacy, leave away the encryption. the encrypton does not stop malware or people figuring out your password.14:03
prawnit only protects from people reading out the data from the harddisk via an alternative operating system.14:03
minimecMarkedOne: When it comes to 'speed', people will tell you to encrypt either the whole harddrive or 'nothing'. Only enrypting parts of the drive wil slow it down.14:03
hillarysorry give again the command for new release upgrade14:03
prawnand even then, you need a good password.14:03

mark__Ikonia: no,15:53
mark__ikonia: would that work offline? If it will I'll try and learn it15:54
YalBrenikonia: because it's a custom made distro and we haven't made the new one yet15:54
TJ-mark__: The kvm modules are part of the Ubuntu and mainline kernels - for the userspace packages, KVM has merged with QEMU, so you need to install package "qemu-kvm" : "sudo apt-get install qemu-kvm"15:54

TJ-mark__: See the package "apt-offline"15:56
ikoniaYalBren: if it's a custom made distro it's not ubuntu15:56
YalBrenTJ-: we don't host a custom repo, we have always had the ability to do-release-upgrade before it's just for some reason now it's not working15:57
YalBrenikonia: it's just scripts ran at the end15:57
ikoniaYalBren: so then install 12.0415:57
ikoniaYalBren: or 14.0415:57
mark__TJ: looking now, sorry if I'm spamming this place. I'm quite new to linux.15:57
YalBrenwe can't15:57
ikoniaif it's just scripts15:57
ikoniaYalBren: why ?15:57
ikoniaYalBren: if it's "nothing" as you say, then you can use 12.04, if it's not nothing as you say, you shouldn't be doing the upgrade process15:58
YalBrenikonia: because there's a whole process that needs to be done to approve it first and that takes months.15:58
ikoniaYalBren: then the upgrade process is a risk15:58
ikoniaand will still break15:58
daftykinsBoltious: not until you explain the issue better, nope15:58
ikonia12.04 by an upgrade is 12.04 as a clean install15:58

borisetoXcrox, depends. For example whenever I go on long trips if I work on something and didn't quite finish it, I hibernate the laptop and continue when I get a power source. It basically stores everything from my RAM memory on the hard drive (the swap partition). And when I turn it on, it gets everything from swap and puts it in RAM, so I continue where I left off.19:32

ikoniavegaserrana: how does this relate to ubuntu20:40

ikoniavegaserrana: this is not a wise thing to do20:42
ikoniavegaserrana: the ntfs file system has no permissions available so the web server would be exposed20:42
vegaserrana*she; it seems messy trying to get IIS to host files from the Linux partition even if that is possible, I would think it'd be easier for Apache to host the files from the Windows partition instead20:43
