SirRiffsAlotHey people! For someone who only does audio-production with UbuntuStudio, is there a list of packages/programs that are probably unnecessary that can be removed for better performance et cetera?17:43
holsteinSirRiffsAlot: not really17:44
holsteinSirRiffsAlot: id say, go the other way17:44
holstein!mini17:44
ubottuThe Minimal CD image is very small in size, and it downloads most packages from the Internet during installation, allowing you to select only those you want.  The installer is text based (rather than graphical as used on the Desktop DVD). See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD17:44
holsteinjust get minimal, and only add what you want/need.. or, start with something like lubuntu and add what you want17:44
holsteinyou can install the lowlatency kernel from the repos, and jack... and ardour.. and whatever else.. just the minimal17:45
holsteinotherwise, it really gets into a matter of taste and needs as to what is "crufty"17:45
SirRiffsAlotholstein: thing is I've had such monumental trouble with that kinda thing in the past... you know how it is17:45
holsteinSirRiffsAlot: sure.. thats why i would start with, what is the goal, here?17:45
holsteini mean, are you trying to save a few gigabytes of hard drive space?17:46
SirRiffsAlotholstein: US as it is is beautiful, could be perfect if there was some organised way of going about it, the ticking-function you have at the start of install is a good start17:46
SirRiffsAlotholstein: well that too, but also lessen the amount of processes running, for optimal performance17:46
holsteinSirRiffsAlot: ticking?17:46
holsteinSirRiffsAlot: ubuntustudio is quite a nice balance17:46
holsteinSirRiffsAlot: if you want to get "better", you will likely run into the issues you are implying.. its all a trade-off17:47
SirRiffsAlotholstein: yeah, the "tick"-function at the initial install-stage17:47
SirRiffsAlotholstein: hmm I see17:47
SirRiffsAlotholstein: is there no such studio-distribution with minimal as it's basis?17:47
holsteinsure17:47
holsteintheres even one based on puppy.. its all a trade off17:47
holsteinyou dont get ppa support there.. and you have older packages..17:48
holsteinAVlinux is a "nice" low-resource machine, but, its an "appliance" install.. so, i dont have that machine online17:48
SirRiffsAlotholstein: I suppose you guys have given this some thought. In the long run it may be best to leave well-enough alone then?17:48
holsteini personally dont think networking is needed on my audio production machine, so its not a big deal, but, if you want a "balanced" machine, ubuntustuduio is a nice balance17:48
SirRiffsAlotholstein: networking can easily be removed, no? :O17:49
holsteinits a desktop focused machine that is setup to run well for multimedia production machines17:49
holsteinSirRiffsAlot: thats not the point17:49
holsteinthe point is, AVlinux *is* lighter.. but, its not an install that is meant to be used as a "desktop" focused setup17:49
SirRiffsAlotI see17:49
holsteinyou dont take updates.. patches.. security fixes17:49
holsteinits *all* a compromise17:49
SirRiffsAlotholstein: is there any such list still? Just to cut down on some of these things I see around that are totally useless to an audio-production guy?17:50
holsteinif you want *exactly* what you want, you can have it, but you'd need to just start buidling up from minimal, and deal with breakage.. or, stripping away from whatever you want to start with, and deal with the breakage17:50
SirRiffsAlotOk17:50
holsteinSirRiffsAlot: not sure what you want.. you can use *any* package manager to look at what you have17:50
holsteinSirRiffsAlot: i like synaptic17:51
holstein!Info synaptic17:51
holstein!info synaptic17:51
ubottusynaptic (source: synaptic): Graphical package manager. In component universe, is optional. Version 0.81.1ubuntu1 (trusty), package size 1329 kB, installed size 7650 kB17:51
SirRiffsAlotSynaptic is awesome, but the problem is the dependencies really screw me over at times and sometimes even break my system17:51
holsteinSirRiffsAlot: sure17:51
SirRiffsAlotSo I'd like to remove those that stand on their own17:51
holsteinSirRiffsAlot: *thats* the "risk" and "breakage" i refer to you dealing with17:51
SirRiffsAlotAha17:51
holsteinSirRiffsAlot: we dont maintain a "so, you've decided to break ubuntustudio like this" list17:52
SirRiffsAlotToo bad for me hehe ^^17:52
holsteinSirRiffsAlot: you pull things out, things are affected..17:52
SirRiffsAlotWell, then. I'll keep kicking it in the nuts I suppose :) Long time no see by the way holstein!17:52
holsteinthose effects can be good for some things and bad for others17:52
holsteinid say, load up a VM, and install minimal, and try building up.. or install full ubuntustudio and start tearing down.. then, you can image that after you get is setup the way you like.. and you can save "snapshots" along the way17:53
holsteini think personally, you'll find that you can spend a lot of time here, and really end up with the biggest benefit being clearing up a couple gigabytes of hard drive space17:54
holsteinSirRiffsAlot: good luck.. i also like loading up distros like AVlinux and KXstudio to see what they are doing17:55
holsteinkxstudio is *not* the typical light or lean desktop, but, is quite capable and utilizes resources well17:56
SirRiffsAlotThanks *thumbs up* How hasslesome is it to get a lowlatency kernel on a 64-bit machine with minimal these days?17:56
holsteinSirRiffsAlot: you can sudo apte-get install it from the default repos17:57
holsteinor, the package manager of your choice..17:57
holsteinthat minimal iso, kubuntu, ubuntu, ubuntustudio, lubuntu, *all* of the official flavors.. they are *all* ubuntu17:59
holsteinall the same repos.. because they are official flavors, they have none of their own sources17:59
holsteinall of the ubuntustuduio packages are in the repos.. if you want lowlatency kernel in kubuntu, or lubuntu, you just install if from the default sources17:59
SirRiffsAlotholstein: well, for instance. What the hell is that ubuntu software center... I don't want it. But when you remove it, the whole desktop goes away too18:10
SirRiffsAlotPackage name that is18:10
holsteinSirRiffsAlot: so?18:11
SirRiffsAlotWell, I kinda need a desktop to work with...?18:11
holsteinSirRiffsAlot: you dont have to use it.. it likely depends on the desktop you are using18:11
holsteinSirRiffsAlot: if you want to build from scratch with out it, you can18:11
holsteinotherwise, whats the gain of pulling it? 80kb? 80mb?18:11
holsteinthe *ubuntu* software center, though, i personally dont use/like it, isnt going anywhere in *ubuntu* anytime soon18:12
holsteini just use apt-get, or synaptic..18:12
SirRiffsAlotYeah, ubuntu software center is what I meant18:12
SirRiffsAlotExactl18:12
SirRiffsAloty18:12
holsteinyou can always easily install xfce, or lxde.. *not* lubuntu-desktop or xubuntu-desktop, or ubuntustudio-desktop and *not* have the same depends18:13
SirRiffsAlotholstein: I'll go with e17 I think18:36
SirRiffsAlotWorked well in the past. Any objections to that?18:36
SirRiffsAlotholstein: hello? :)18:53
SirRiffsAlotWell night, thanks for the help :)19:21
