Jon_anyone here01:15
Jon_i'm a new kubuntu user. installed full Ubuntu with Unity. I like Kubuntu. But I have problem. If I show the Trash icon on the task manager panel and then proceed to move it right of the clock just left of the Panel Tool Box then when I relog in I'll get a black screen.01:17
Jon_if the trash icon is not right of the clock readout then I don't seem to get the problem01:18
Jon_i am using 14.04 LTS Ubuntu with the KDE Kubuntu installed01:18
Jon_problem is if anybody can duplicate my problem then they might lose their appearance settings... if i use "sudo rm -rf .kde/share/config/plasma-*" after pressing ctrl-alt-f2 and enterining user/pswrd then it will allow me to log in but deletes the settings01:23
Jon_i alos tried eeleting all the config settings but the problem remains01:24
Jon_i need a suggestion of where to go to find help about this01:27

BluesKajHi folks11:51
fujiohow do I stop networkmanager in kubuntu?12:25
fujioTehre is no init script in kubuntu12:25
tsimpson"sudo service network-manager stop"12:28
rbergyep it looks to be a upstart job so its in /etc/init/ not init.d12:28
fujiothanks that worked12:30
PieandVinylHi ladies and gents. I'm having wireless dropouts on my new lappy with an haswell intel 7260. Tends to be stable after turning the wifi on and off a few times and networkmanager shows a good connection when there isn't one. Anyone got any ideas? Even if generic?12:50
hateballPieandVinyl: what release/kernel are you running?12:55
hateballIn my experience it can take Intel some time to catch up with their newer chipset modules12:55
PieandVinyl14.04 and 3.13.0-35. You're probably right.12:58
hateballPieandVinyl: You could try using backported modules, or a newer kernel13:00
hateballPieandVinyl: Googling for your chipset + kernel usually turns up interesting results :)13:01
PieandVinylSame old story, googled everything but never thought of that search term. There's some interesting results indeed. Cheers, I'll have a read.13:04
hateballhmmm, is there no linux-backports-modules package any longer...13:07
=== rsi is now known as frs
ozooner__PieandVinyl, I have same intel chipset and dropouts with 3.13. Upgrading to 3.15 (or 3.16) solved the issue13:08
PieandVinylozooner_: Ah right. That's good news!13:11
PieandVinylhateball: I'll have a look at a newer kernel then!13:12
hateballPieandVinyl: Good luck in your quest for stable wifi :)13:17
frophello14:31
=== Mdgd is now known as Mdgd`
Mdgd`Hey guys14:32
fropI'm running a Live-Kubuntu from an USB-key and I'm having problems using "mplayer" and smb:// streams14:32
Mdgd`Does anyone know if it is possible to install Kubuntu with LVM and an encrypted partition, using a manual partition scheme? NOT using the entire disk?14:32
fropI installed VLC and I can watch these stream just right14:33
fropeven tried to install gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad with no success14:33
Mdgd`I was referred to the "alternate" CD in a forum post but A. it's broken, B. it's discontinued as of 12.something14:33
Mdgd`Seems like a pretty drastic downgrade if that's really the case..14:35
fropdid you try something like this? http://www.debuntu.org/how-to-install-ubuntu-on-lvm-partitions/14:37
Mdgd`frop, I've already made the partitions, but the Kubuntu installer doesn't supported LVM crypts.14:38
Mdgd`Unless you're prepared to wipe your HDD14:38
Mdgd`Which kinda strikes me like offering people the option of installing a door lock.14:40
Mdgd`As long as they're willing to replace all their windows with doors.14:40
Mdgd`Pretty ludicrous demand to set..14:41
shadeslayerMdgd`: re using manual partitioning scheme, no14:43
shadeslayerfwiw there is no manual partitioning scheme, since you can just resize lvm partitions on the fly14:43
shadeslayerso seems pointless14:43
Mdgd`shadeslayer, okay. Are you familiar with a Linux distro that *does* support it?14:43
Mdgd`Fedora?14:43
shadeslayernot off the top of my head14:43
Mdgd`Haha14:43
Mdgd`Oh man if only14:44
shadeslayerwhy can't you just resize lvm partitions after installation?14:44
shadeslayeralso14:44
Mdgd`I tried, but maybe those tools were discontinued with 12 too..14:44
shadeslayeryou could technically preseed it14:44
shadeslayer!preseeding14:44
shadeslayerhm nope14:44
BluesKajMdgd`, i assume you've read this, https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SettingUpLVM-WithoutACleanInstall14:44
Mdgd`I followed the Ubuntu tutorial on LVM resizing - first half was redundant as everything was set by default, second half just spat out errors.14:45
lordievaderMdgd`: The mini iso can setup encrypted lvm partitions however you like.14:45
Mdgd`Mini iso?14:45
shadeslayeror you know, preseeding14:45
BluesKaj!minimal14:45
ubottuThe Minimal CD image is very small in size, and it downloads most packages from the Internet during installation, allowing you to select only those you want.  The installer is text based (rather than graphical as used on the Desktop DVD). See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD14:45
lordievaderMdgd`: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD14:45
Mdgd`Thanks guys14:46
Mdgd`Does *this* one support wifi?14:46
shadeslayerMdgd`: https://help.ubuntu.com/12.04/installation-guide/i386/preseed-using.html & https://help.ubuntu.com/14.04/installation-guide/example-preseed.txt14:46
shadeslayerMdgd`: mini ISO doesn't support wifi I think14:46
shadeslayerhaven't tried it though14:46
Mdgd`Oh well. As long as it can set up a single LVM crypt alongside other partitions, and it supports KDE, I'll take it.14:47
shadeslayerMdgd`: search for partitioning on the second link14:47
Mdgd`Alright, I gotta cut this connection to run this install14:49
Mdgd`Thanks for the help fellas14:49
BluesKajgood luck Mdgd`14:51
fropok, seems like will be impossible use smplayer and media stored on a samba share14:56
fropis there really no solution to this?14:56
frop...guess an http/ftp server will do :P14:57
BluesKajfrop, on your LAN?15:02
fropyes15:03
fropI can browse the share in dolphin15:04
fropI can play the media with VLC15:04
fropjust can't using smplayer15:04
fropnor the default kubuntu videoplayer15:04
BluesKajfrop, I've experienced the same problem with mplayer and dragonplayer, they aren't quite as advanced in terms of streaming options as VLC15:06
fropit's not about the player itself...more likely it's KDE/kio fault15:06
fropusing ubuntu (and .gvfs) there's no such problem15:07
BluesKajwell, frop that was my experience, it could be a kio problem, but I use VLC as default so I guess it's immaterial in my case. Have you considered filing a bug? or asking in #kubuntu-devel15:11
fropseems like the "kio" bug is an old one :)15:11
BluesKajno doubt ..unfortunately media in and out seems to take a back seat on kde in general15:14
froptrying now, via ftp...let's see15:14
fropeheh, works perferctly15:15
fropgonna uninstall vlc15:18
fropit bugs out sometimes, leaving the media without audio15:18

fuorviatosguys I've probably found a crtical  bug in fglrx or KDE screenserver. How can I find out which one is the cause?15:44
BluesKajfuorviatos, describe your issue in more detail15:45
fuorviatosBluesKaj: when using fglrx driver after suspending and waking up with the kscreensaver a hang occurs15:48
fuorviatosthe only solution is to hard-reboot15:49
fuorviatosno such issue with intel driver15:49
lordievaderfuorviatos: Haven't seen that issue here.15:51
fuorviatoslordievader - does that mean it is not an issue ;) ?15:52
BluesKajfuorviatos, ok, what about desktop effects and OpenGL settings, any issues there?15:52
lordievaderfuorviatos: No, it just means that I can not confirm it ;)15:52
fuorviatosBluesKaj: not really - because intel works like a charm with them15:53
fuorviatosI suppose it is a fglrx-related bug15:54
BluesKajso you have a hybrid gpu setup15:54
fuorviatosYep15:54
fuorviatoswhich is supposed to work without problems with 14.0415:54
fuorviatosit already did with 12.0415:55
fuorviatosthat's why I'm kind of excluding the hardware here15:55
BluesKajif your high level gpu was nvidia we could probly help, but amd/ati is more difficult15:55
fuorviatosI'm gonna open this as a bug under fglrx package upstream15:56
lordievaderIt might very well be the hybrid thing, I can imagine such things are tricky.15:56
fuorviatosBluesKaj: out of my curiosity - why is nvidia easier to solve?15:57
lordievaderAnd that something is supposed to work doesn't mean it works.15:57
BluesKajyes, but make sure you include the dual gpus in the explanation15:57
fuorviatoslordievader: Well, it should because 12.04 introduced a special xorg and kernel to support such chipsets. This was official support by Ubuntu.15:58
BluesKajintel/nivida has more optional support as well as bumblebee15:58
lordievaderfuorviatos: Have you looked in the logs what might be the issue?15:58
fuorviatosBluesKaj, lordievader - please note that my issue doesn't occur while switching15:59
fuorviatoslordievader: I cannot see nothing in the logs15:59
lordievaderfuorviatos: So you can see something :P15:59
fuorviatos;)15:59
fuorviatosThanks for the support15:59
fuorviatosTry to report that15:59
fuorviatoswhat is the package name of kde screensaver?16:00
lordievaderfuorviatos: kscreensaver16:01
skinuxI'm looking for some help configuring "Windows" key to open KDE Menu.16:21
lordievaderskinux: Last time I checked that wasn't possible, since the Windows key (super) is a modifier.16:21
skinuxOkay16:23
SonikkuAmericaShoot, I was going to tell skinux to bind it to Alt+F116:29
