As4xkHi. I'm running Kubuntu 14.04. KDE is freezing in the sence that if i try to open the application launcher, nothing happens. If i try to open a program, then program starts to load (i.e. the mouse get the jumping terminal icon when i try to lauch terminal from quicklaunch bar). I have no idea why. Any idea where to start? :p I dont find any log files named KDE under /var/log (i can ctrl+alt+F1 and login there to do stuff from terminal)12:52
soeeAs4xk: on a fresh installation or upgraded or ?12:53
As4xkThe application (e.g. terminal) start's to load, and suddently it quits. After approx. 1 min after boot, i cannot right click on desktop, cannot do anything except move the mouse and ctrl+alt+F112:54
soeeBluesKaj: any thoughts ^ ?12:54
As4xkNo. I tried to remove the encrypted swap from crypttab fstab and the initramfs-tools-resume. That's when it happened. But i reverted all my changes (from temrinal) but the problem remains12:55
BluesKajAs4xk, i have to ask what soee asked you clean install recently or an upgrade or...?12:55
As4xkNo. I have been running the system for 2 weeks approx.12:56
As4xkupgraded packages through apt-get probably, but not a fresh upgrade to form old->14.04 if that's what you meen12:57
BluesKajperhaps you need an update/upgrade or dist-upgrade, it seems you have something missing in the plasma desktop13:00
soeeAs4xk: sudo apt-get update & apt full-upgrade13:01

As4xkIt also says 0 upgraded, 0 new, 0 remove and 0 not upgraded13:06
BluesKajit might be a good idea to enable the backports if you have them commented13:07
As4xktrusty-backports are not commented13:08
As4xkcan i restart KDE somehow from terminal?13:09
BluesKajAs4xk, ok13:09
As4xkDo KDE have any logfiles i can look at?13:09
As4xknow KDE have gone all ape shit. Chrome doesn't work either. The bottom panel is gone, and alt+tab is not doing anything13:10

davls82Hello i am using Kubuntu 14.04.1 64 Bit LTS does anybody know how long is supported because other Editions like Gnome Ubuntu have only 3 years Support13:19
BluesKajyeah reinstalling kubuntu-desktop used to work on older versions of kde, that's no longer the case I guess13:20
BluesKaj!LTS13:21
ubottuLTS means Long Term Support. Until 12.04 LTS versions of Ubuntu were supported for 3 years on the desktop, and 5 years on the server; since 12.04 (Precise Pangolin) LTS versions will be supported for 5 years on the desktop and server. The latest LTS version of Ubuntu is !Trusty (Trusty Tahr 14.04)13:21
As4xkDo KDE store some cache files i can delete?13:21
As4xkhmm. I removed the swap stuff again and rebooted. Now everything works fine. I don't understand what that's got to do with KDE :(13:23
As4xkWell well. It works13:24
BluesKajAs4xk, what swap stuff ?13:27
As4xkinformation about encrypted swap partition in /etc/crypttab /etc/fstab /etc/initramfs-tools/resume13:28
hateballAs4xk: you cant run gparted in a tty, it requires X13:28
BluesKajwhy would you encrypt swap anyway /13:29
lordievaderBluesKaj: Same reason you would encrypt your hard drive.13:29
As4xkBluesKaj: Why not?13:30
BluesKajok , so it's a result of full hdd encryption13:31
As4xkhateball: Ok, thanks. I just tried everything :p13:31
hateballAs4xk: I'd use gparted-live rather than resize things on a running system, but that's just me13:32
As4xkBluesKaj: Yes. I want to use a random key, not to enter a key at boot. Then i thought: "Might remove it fully first to test". And then KDE got stuping (which is what i don't understand)13:32
As4xkhateball: I just wanted to run ANY application with GUI ;)13:32
hateballAs4xk: Aha. Perhaps I should have read up better. Carry on.13:33
BluesKajAs4xk, i don't  understand either , but then again i don't use encryption so I have no idea how it affects kde/desktopo loading etc at boot13:35
imbezolhow do i delete KDE's stored information on screen resolution? i tried going to an unsupported resolution in an emulator and even after rebooting kde wants that res on logging in. if i use unity everything in x works fine, but kde flips to that unsupported res and my m13:38

As4xkAnyway, it works now. Thanks for your help BluesKaj, soee13:40

Alex-ZionHi everyone , I have some strange behavior using chromium browser on my kubuntu 14.04 system, anytime I open up the browser it send information to few server including google server , it is normal ?14:03
faustAlex-Zion: yeah it's normal for google to be creepy14:07
Alex-Zionand why thi functionality isn't removed for the Open Source Version ?14:08
faustAlex-Zion: maybe if you disable all those option about contacting web service for auto completion, spell checking etc it will be a little bit quiet14:10
Alex-Ziona little bit but not quite14:12
Alex-Zionit's a shame that anytime i change a peg or refresh the same it send info to google , isn't ?14:12
faustAlex-Zion: I'm quiet sure that they have a reasonable reason for doing so, like "OCSP ssl certs validation", but if you don't like it you should probably come back to FF14:15
Alex-Zionof course I will faust14:16
faustor maybe somewhere exists som patch to avoid chromium doing things like these14:16
Alex-Zionabout the reasons its clear enough to me14:16
fausteheh14:16
faustI was a little bit sarcastic about "reasonable reason" :P14:17
Alex-Zionbut I thought that those kind of shit wouldn't appear on kubuntu , but I was wrong14:17
Alex-Zionin my opinio it shouldn't be on the repo at all14:17
BluesKajFF has become too bloated for me, I'll sacrifice a bit of privacy for a broswer that's quicker and easier to use14:18

faustAlexZion_: I don't know, if they wanted to spy you intetionally there better ways14:28
TJ-AlexZion_: If I recall correctly, if Google is selected as the default Search engine, then the browser will contact Google servers for type-ahead, spelling, and some other functions, so you'd need to identify the target of the connection(s) in order to determine their purpose14:30
faustBluesKaj: at least that is not a *.deb-only thing14:30
AlexZion_about connection TJ, mil01s18-in-f9.1e100.net and 173.45.105.114 and is even worst when I close it14:30

aasdaHello all. One quick question. Do I need SWAP partition if I have 8gb ram? Thanks.16:34
MangaKaDenzaIts always good to have some swap16:35
lordievaderaasda: Depends on your usage. But it usually a good idea to have some swap.16:35
MangaKaDenzaI recommend 4GB16:36
aasdashould I go 1/2, 1/1 or put let's say 10gb?16:36
BluesKajaasda, yes if you plan to hibernate any sessions16:36
aasdaWell, I don't plan to Hibernate. I don't say never, but chance is minimal.16:37
BluesKajwith 8G ram there won't likely be much or any swapping going on, unless of course you have a whole lot of busy apps running simultaneously16:38
lordievaderOr a memory leak ;)16:39
aasdaWell, I use Mint for my office needs, a bit of programming, browsing and similar. Nothing "heavy" I think.16:41
aasdaSo, now I want to try Kubuntu.16:41
MangaKaDenzaSay guys, the global media keys (Fn+play, Fn+next, etc) don't work on clementine16:43
MangaKaDenzawat do?16:43
lordievaderMangaKaDenza: Have you configured clementine to use those?16:43
MangaKaDenzait says Media * is linked to the appropriate action16:45
MangaKaDenzaLike, Media Play/Pause : Play/pause16:45
MangaKaDenzashould I try Fn+Fsomething?16:47
MangaKaDenzanope, doesn't work16:47
BluesKajaasda, I have a 9G swap and serves me well , any swap should be at least as large as your ram16:47
BluesKajoops, too late16:47
lordievaderMeh, I usually have it at max 5G.16:48
BluesKajlordievader, depends on your ram ...it used to be 1.5X RAM16:49
MangaKaDenzalordievader: what should I do16:50
lordievaderNot if you don't hibernate, then you are free to choose. Using more than 5G seems like a waste of disk space to me.16:50
lordievaderMangaKaDenza: Haven't used Clementine in a long time. I do know the mpris interface works quite allright.16:50
* lordievader has written a media controller that uses the mpris interface.16:51

TJ-sithlord48: Sounds like it might be suspended at start-up, doesn't it?17:27

sithlord4814.01 server. few ppa stuffs.17:29
sithlord48manually installed kernel 3.1617:29
TJ-sithlord48: check "/var/log/syslog" for clues when transmission starts.... and also, check that the network interface it is set to listen on is available and up when it binds the socket17:30
TJ-sithlord48: failure for it doing that would explain why it works when you restart it later17:30
sithlord48starts on 127.0.0.117:31
TJ-sithlord48: That'd explain it ... it needs to be bound to 0.0.0.0 or to the public interface IP(s)17:32
sithlord48shouldn't it just work when i install ?17:33
sithlord48i used to17:33
sithlord48it*17:33
TJ-It should  - but if when it starts only the "lo" interface is ready that might be all it binds to... when you restart it later, and all NICs are available, it'd bind to them all .... my hypothesis, anyhow17:34
TJ-sithlord48: previously it used a SysV init script (/etc/init.d/) so if it is now using an upstart job it is possible that job conf starts it too early17:35
sithlord48do you know where upstart is saving its scripts?17:35
TJ-sithlord48: "/etc/init/"17:36
sithlord48in the settings for transmission its bound to the ip 0.0.0.0 should i try my local ?17:36
sithlord48TJ-:  that seams to have worked !17:42
sithlord48thanks!!17:42

cjwelbornDoes Kubuntu/Ubuntu have any real chroot jails available? Not just a chroot, but something that takes extra steps trying to make it inescapable? I've been reading a little about this stuff, and I've heard of something called a 'FreeBSD Jail'. I was just wondering if there was an easily deployed option for *buntu variants.20:30
cjwelbornAnyway, it's not important. I'm just studying a bit because it may come in handy later. I don't mean a virtual machine really, but something that 'jails' a process from accessing anything outside of it's chroot.20:33
cjwelbornuser-mode-linux may be what I am looking for. I'm not sure though. I guess I have more reading to do.20:37
anderslis it possible to install the normal KDE networkmanager plasmoid in kubuntu?20:40
Snowhogcjwelborn: And https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BasicChroot won't do what you want?20:40
valorieI thought that was the whole point of a chroot20:42
cjwelbornEverything I have read says that chroot's can be easily escaped. Like I said before, this is just for study, but I'd like to look at the most secure method available.20:46
cjwelbornI've made some chroots for cross-compiling and jailing a process to a certain directory. It was trusted code though. I'm looking into what would happen with untrusted code.20:51
cjwelbornSo far I have found UserModeLinux, which is like a virtual machine. It claims to protect your system from borked code/kernels.20:52

ToredederSOMEBODY22:21
geniiTorededer: You can try: ctrl-alt-f1 and login to console. Then: DISPLAY=:0     then: kwin --replace     then: exit   and ctrl-f7 to return to Kubuntu and see if that fixed it22:24
Torededergenii i will try it22:33
Toredederit fixes it for a few seconds, but after that it goes back to normal, so is there a way to keep it running?22:36
Torededergenii22:36
valorieTorededer: I'm having trouble understanding22:38
valorieexit out buttons from what?22:39
valoriecontrol alt f1 -f6 get you to consoles22:39
geniivalorie: As I took it, all their windows are missing their minimize/maximize/close22:39
valorieah, the window deco22:40
Torededervalorie yea what geni said22:40
valorieusually control q quits all KDE applications22:40
valoriebut dunno about other stuff22:40
Toredederand also my kickoff application thing starts like under all the other layers for some stupid reason :/22:40
Torededervalorie i also can't drag my windows22:41
Toredederany other suggestions??22:41
valorieperhaps reinstall kubuntu-desktop ?22:42
valoriesounds like some bits are missing22:42
valorieor, just rename your ~/.kde folder22:42
geniiTorededer: Is this some newer computer?22:42
valorieand let KDE start afresh with new configs22:43
Torededergenii no it is from windows xp era machines22:43
Torededervalorie i tried reinstalling kubuntu desktop plasma desktop kde window manager and other stuff and it didnt do anything...22:44
valoriewell, you can always check with a new user22:45
genii!requirements22:46
ubottuHardware requirements to install, boot and comfortably use Ubuntu are listed at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements - For a !flavor with lower requirements, see !Xubuntu or !Lubuntu22:46
valorieif you login with the new user and all is well, then it will help to rename ~/.kde22:46
TJ-Any ideas why I'd have desktop effects on X screens 0 and 3, but not on 1 and 2 ?22:46
geniiTJ-: I'd suspect screens 0 and 3 are same adapter with compositing, and 1 and 2 is some other adapter without compositing22:48
TJ-genii: Actually no, there's 3 GPUs, 0 and 1 on GPU#0, 2 on GPU#1, 3 on GPU#222:49
geniiHm, curious then.22:49
TJ-the problem, of course, is that the systemsettings applet cannot differentiate in the GUI, and I've not yet found the setting to control it on a per-screen basis in the config files22:50
Torededergenii yeah i got all of the ram needed and stuff but i dont't think you need anything else, really ...22:50
Torededervalorie why do i need to rename the .kde file?22:51
valoriethat will reset your configs, Torededer22:51
valoriebut as I said, create a new user and check, first22:51
valorieif a new user doesn't fix the problem, then it is useless to rename your .kde22:51
valorieand I say rename rather than delete because then you can move back the configs you want22:52
valoriebut step one is check with a new user22:52
valorie!newuser22:52
valoriepfff22:52
valorie!user22:52
ubottuTo add new users to your Ubuntu system, follow the instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AddUsersHowto - For administrative privileges, users need to be made members of the group "sudo" - See !sudo22:52

valoriehmmm23:05
Torededervalorie awesome thanks i will try it23:08
douglI got myself confused trying to install skype - can anyone clear the haze23:31
dougl?23:31
geniidougl: Should be as simple as adding the partner repository, refreshing the list, then installing it23:33
douglk looking at the ubuntu hand book thanks genii23:33
douglsupposed to be in the conical repo but the check mark option is dimmed in the software sources23:35
geniidougl: I would suggest: sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://archive.canonical.com/ $(lsb_release -sc) partner"                    ..and then: sudo apt-get update        and then: sudo apt-get install skype23:36
geniidougl: If you were following the instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Skype the part about multiarch at the beginning is now obsoleted23:37
douglthanks genii23:37
